CCM’s Early Music Lab will join guest Ensemble 1521 for a free performance of Canto Beneventano, a medieval chant from Santa Sofia Benevento, on Wednesday, June 1 at 8:30 p.m. in CCM’s Albino Gorno Memorial Music Library. Admission to this performance is free.

Under the direction of CCM Assistant Professor of Musicology Dr. Matthew Peattie, the Early Music Lab will perform the Beneventan chant that was the indigenous chant of southern Italy before the arrival of the central Gregorian repertory in the region in the late 8th century. A 10-voice ensemble will sing examples of the Canto Beneventano from Benevento, Biblioteca capitolare MS 40 featuring texts transcribed and reconstructed by Peattie.

The concert will be accompanied by an annotated display of the CCM Gorno Music Library’s collection of chant manuscripts in facsimile.

Pre-Concert Talk: “The Beneventan Chant”
Sarah Bereza, a Master’s of Music in Musicology student who is currently completing her thesis on modality and formularity in Beneventan chant, will provide a pre-concert talk at 7:45 p.m. in Gorno Music Library.
