Musical Theatre Meets Physics in CCM’s “The Theory of Relativity”

Art and science unite in the next Studio Musical Theatre Series production at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Using Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity as a beautiful and thought-provoking metaphor, The Theory of Relativity offers a crash course in physics while telling the story of a group of interconnected people who are searching for love.

The musical runs Thursday, March 29 through Saturday, March 31, 2018, at CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free but reservations are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, March 26 through the CCM Box Office.

From Drama Desk Award nominees Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, The Theory of Relativity presents an array of characters experiencing life’s joys and heartbreaks and the inevitability and wonder of human connection.

The physics metaphors are expressed through lyrics, formulas and movement on stage, says CCM Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre Katie Johannigman, director and choreographer of The Theory of Relativity.

CCM’s production invited Dr. Richard Gass, Undergraduate Director of UC’s Physics Department, to give the cast a crash course on General Relativity to prepare for the show. What was planned as a 30-minute lesson turned into an over two-hour interactive lesson about light cones, Newton’s laws, The Theory of Relativity and more, Johannigman says.

“Our students became enraptured by the physics and it launched a huge discussion about technology usage in our generation, perceptions people try to maintain through social media and how important our every action is during our time here on Earth.”

Gass listened to the musical and applied all of the physics lessons through the lyrics in the songs. He later brought ten of his students to watch a rehearsal of the show and had a discussion with the cast of CCM Musical Theatre students about how art and science overlap. Johannigman and The Theory of Relativity cast are grateful for Gass’ help, she says.

“We sing about the cosmos and our insatiable need to connect with each other through witty and contemporary lyrics that often reference Sir Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein’s findings,” Johannigman adds. “The Theory of Relativity is funny, sad, heart-warming and familiar — a whirl of stars figuring out where we fit into every expanding universe.”

CCM will present eight masterworks spanning the spectrum of the theatre arts during its 2018-19 Mainstage Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera. Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy. Nathan Detroit is a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

Based on Henry James’ classic ghost-story novella, Britten’s compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle’s country estate, where the ghosts of a former valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame begins as bells sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools, but he is held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. He escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though — the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all.

Mozart’s last opera seria displays some of his most memorable and marvelous arias! The story centers on Roman emperor Titus (Tito) who must choose a wife, but is unable to find a suitable match. In his search for an empress, Tito narrowly avoids an assassination plot instigated by his best friend Sesto and the former emperor’s daughter, Vitellia, who wants the throne for herself. Caught between his duty and his heart, the emperor must choose whether to rule with mercy or with an iron fist.

CCM Studio Series Presents a Musical Celebration of Stephen Sondheim

CCM’s Musical Theatre department stages Sondheim on Sondheim, a documentary-meets-musical-revue, on Thursday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 7. Admission is free but reservations are required; tickets become available at noon on Monday, Oct. 2.

CCM opens its Sesquicentennial Studio Series with Sondheim on Sondheim, a musical revue of Stephen Sondheim’s most beloved works, on Thursday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 7 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. The performance paints an intimate portrait of the songwriter, told through his music and through video clips of Sondheim himself.

“Sondheim’s comments are amazingly candid, giving a unique and personal insight into the stories behind the songs, as well as the personal battles he has faced with his family, producers and fame,” says CCM Musical Theatre Professor and Department Chairman Aubrey Berg, director of the show.

Eight singers from CCM’s Musical Theatre program will perform some of Sondheim’s most popular tunes without amplification and accompanied only by piano. Audiences will recognize featured songs in the revue, such as “Comedy Tonight” from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, “Something’s Comin’” from West Side Story and “Send in the Clowns” from A Little Night Music.

The show also includes excerpts from Passion, Assassins and Bounce, as well as a brand-new song written just for Sondheim on Sondheim.

“The strength of the show comes from the brilliance of the music and lyrics and the accomplishments of the performers in interpreting the songs of the modern master of musical theatre,” Berg says.

CCM Musical Theatre has a long history with Sondheim musicals; the department has staged almost all of Sondheim’s major works over the years.

“His songs can be witty and ironic, but also heartfelt and deeply emotional,” Berg says. “They provide a tremendous challenge to young performers and serve as excellent training for our more advanced students.”

With this show, CCM Musical Theatre also welcomes the return of Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012) as a Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre. Johannigman choreographs Sondheim on Sondheim, which features music direction and accompaniment by Stephen Goers.

“I have watched Katie grow up and remember her as a star-struck little girl attending productions at CCM,” Berg says. “The last performance she gave here was as Cinderella in Into the Woods (a favorite Sondheim work). I am delighted that she is visiting us this year as a teacher, choreographer and director. It gives us a wonderful sense of continuity.”

CCM Announces Sesquicentennial Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera

CCM presents nine eclectic and electrifying productions as part of its 150th Anniversary Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera. This annual series of performing and media arts events features CCM’s acclaimed “stars of tomorrow” in a collection of scaled-down stagings set in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and other intimate performance spaces.

The 2017-18 series opens in October with the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim, which showcases the songs of legendary musical theatre composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In November, CCM proudly presents The Earth is Flat, a touching coming-of-age story written by CCM alumnus Todd Almond (BM, 1999) and set in UC’s Calhoun Hall. November also sees the return of the 48-Hour Film Festival, which showcases 10 student-created short films produced over the course of a single weekend.

The series continues in early 2018 with productions of the operas Trouble in Tahiti, The Telephone, Tale for a Deaf Ear and Ariodante. CCM’s popular Dance Student Choreographers’ Showcase and TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student-Created New Works both return in March. The 150th Anniversary Studio Series concludes in Spring 2018 with the unconventional and moving musical drama The Theory of Relativity (directed and choreographed by CCM alumna Katie Johannigman) and the debut of an original 60-minute play created by CCM Acting for the 71st Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Studio Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which includes world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. The CCM Opera d’arte Series of undergraduate productions proudly presents a triple bill of one-act American operas! Featured works include Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, a one-act opera that candidly portrays the troubled marriage of a young suburban couple. Written between Bernstein’s biggest Broadway successes, Trouble in Tahiti draws upon popular song styles to deliver an uncompromising critique of Mid-century American marriage. The triple bill also includes Gian Carlo Menotti’s bit of froth, The Telephone, and Mark Bucci’s rarely produced, but haunting Tale for a Deaf Ear. Taken together, Opera d’arte’s triple bill offers three vastly contrasting views into the extremes of human relationships.

Alumna Katie Johannigman Returns to CCM as Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre

CCM Interim Dean bruce d. mcclung welcomes alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012) to the college’s illustrious faculty. As Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre, Johannigman will choreograph three of CCM’s 2017-18 productions, and teach tap and jazz dance to students.

Johannigman’s connection to CCM spans three generations of her family. Her grandmother and father took piano lessons at the college, and her sister was enrolled in ballet classes through CCM Preparatory for her entire childhood. Johannigman says she started watching her sister’s dance classes at CCM when she was 9 months old and didn’t leave the college until she graduated with her BFA.

“I am extremely honored and excited to return home to the school where I learned to walk, and eventually sing, dance and act,” Johannigman says. “I am thrilled to pass on my experiences as a professional to the next generation of artists in whatever way I can. In my 20 years of training at CCM, an array of wonderful and patient teachers generously shared their time, energy and knowledge. I am so grateful for this opportunity to join their ranks.”

Johannigman began her performing career when she was in the eighth grade by joining the National Tour of Oliver!. As a CCM student, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and studied at the Second City Training Center in Chicago. After graduating, Johannigman served as Artistic Director at the Broadway Method Academy in Connecticut.

Her professional credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie and Pirates! at the Muny, The Light in the Piazza and Anything Goes at Lincolnshire Marriott, Mary Poppins at Kansas City Straight Theatre, Company at the Gallery Players, and Cats and Chicago at the West Virginia Public Theatre.

As a choreographer, Johannigman’s work has appeared at the Connecticut Repertory Theater, The Human Race Theater and the Broadway Method Academy. At CCM she choreographed the Musical Theatre Studio Series productions of They Were You in 2016 and Out of This World in 2011.

This fall, Johannigman will choreograph the Studio Series production of Sondheim on Sondheim (October 5-7) and the Mainstage production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (November 16-19). In the spring, she will direct and choreograph the Studio Series production of The Theory of Relativity (March 29-31).

World Premiere of CCM’s “They Were You” Gets Rave Reviews

Critics praised CCM’s world premiere of They Were You, a musical revue of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt songs, which ran Oct. 5-9 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg, the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM, They Were You featured musical arrangements by CCM faculty member Stephen Goers and choreography by alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012).

In his review for The Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard called CCM’s They Were You “a magical night of theater.” He praised Berg’s direction, the “excellent” cast, Johannigman’s “fun, logical” choreography and Goers’ “beyond beautiful” musical arrangements. 

“There’s no need to single out any one of the six outrageously gifted young artists in the cast,” said Rafael de Acha in his review of the production on Rafael’s Music Notes. “Let me merely give you their names and entreat you to make mental note of them, with the assurance that, sooner than you think, you will be hearing these names: Gabe Wrobel, Emily Fink, Stavros Koumbaros, Aria Brasswell, Karl Amundsen and Michelle Coben.”

Teddy Gumbleton of the League of Cincinnati Theatres wrote that each of the six student performers sang “like a dream, navigating the lush harmonies and infusing each song with the necessary depth and wit. Together they work flawlessly as an ensemble, infusing the rich music with tremendous character.”

In a review for Talkin’ Broadway, Scott Cain said CCM’s Jones and Schmidt revue “revealed a thoughtful, varied and pleasant journey through pair’s exemplary work, and showcased some fine performances and design.” Cain praised the production’s “beautiful, night-sky mural” backdrop designed by CCM faculty member Thomas Umfrid. He also proposed that They Were You “will hopefully be licensed and made available for other theater companies to perform.”

CCM’s 2016-17 season continues with a production of Broadway hit, A Chorus Line, Oct. 20-30 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now.

Since graduating from UC’s College Conservatory of Music, Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012) has worked in New York and started a non-profit, after-school musical theatre training program in Connecticut. She returns to her alma mater to share some tricks of the trade with current students and choreograph They Were You: The Songs of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, a new musical revue that runs Wednesday, Oct. 5-Sunday, Oct. 9 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater.

CCM graduate student Alexandra Doyle got in touch with Johannigman to talk about how it feels to return to CCM and her experience working on They Were You.

What’s it like to come back to CCM as a teacher after having spent so much of your educational experience here as a CCM Preparatory student and then as an undergraduate?

It is so wonderful to come home to CCM, where I first started coming when I was 9 months old and my sister was taking ballet classes. It’s fun to reminisce about all of the exceptional training I had from fabulous CCM Prep teachers over my years here, starting when I was three with Jonnie Lynn Jacobs-Percer in the ballet department and continuing on to Dee Anne Bryll and Ed Cohen in the theatre department. I feel so lucky that my parents knew to send me to CCM Prep, and that I then moved on to such an outstanding college program in my own backyard — with so many fantastic professors from whom I learned so much. I also feel lucky to have the chance to pass on to the students what I learned both from going to school at CCM and from having spent a long time working in the business in New York.

When you were in school here, what did you gain from your experiences working with visiting professionals?
I think it was one of the most important parts of my training at CCM, because they kept us up-to-date with the trends in the business. Aubrey Berg and the rest of the faculty supplied us with strong acting, singing and dance training, and guest teachers taught us how that training is relevant and can be applied in New York today. I hope to do the same for these students.

What do you hope to pass along to the students who are currently in the same position that you were in not so long ago?
I hope to teach them that there is not one single definition of success in this business. We get really caught up while in school and are sometimes led to believe that you’re not successful unless you’re working on Broadway, but I have learned in the past four years that that is not true at all. There are so many ways to be successful in the arts, to use your training, to make an impact in the lives of others through the arts and to be a happy, healthy person working in the arts. I have participated in the arts in many ways in the past four years by performing professionally, choreographing shows and, most satisfyingly, helping to start a non-profit, after-school musical theatre training program with my fellow alumnus Connor Deane in Connecticut called Broadway Method Academy, where I am the artistic director. I wouldn’t have been able to do these things without my CCM training and connections.

What’s it been like to choreograph a new work? Have you felt more pressure to create a refined product that will set the show up for success and future productions, or do you feel freer because the audience doesn’t have any preconceived notions about how the show will look?
It has been both challenging and liberating. We are working with material that is mostly unknown, so people have no idea what they are about to see. It’s been very exciting and freeing to work collaboratively with Aubrey Berg, Steve Goers and the cast to decide what we want this show to be, since it can be anything we want it to be. Focusing on the process and not final product is something that I find very exciting. We have an unbelievably talented cast, so I know the audience will love it. We will see what Tom Jones thinks!

Are you borrowing choreography or dance styles from shows by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt or other cabaret-style works? What influenced you while you were creating this piece?
I have made sure not to watch any videos from Jones and Schmidt productions so that our staging and choreography can be completely original. We are using some standard conventions of revue-style works, such as the use of props to illustrate different scenes and styles. What really influenced me was Aubrey’s clever, smart and creative way of linking these vastly different songs together to make a show that reflects the human experience. I tried to focus on the lyrics, texts, themes and telling of stories in order to bring all these gorgeous songs to life. It has been so fun to work collaboratively alongside a professor whom I look up to and admire so much. Aubrey is really pushing and challenging me to become a better choreographer, so I am grateful and honored for this opportunity to come home to CCM. There is still so much learning to do inside this building!
