CCM Welcomes Thomas Gamboa as Assistant Director of Wind Studies

CCM Interim Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the addition of esteemed conductor and educator Thomas Gamboa as the college’s new Assistant Director of Wind Studies. Gamboa’s appointment begins on Aug. 15, 2018.

Originally from San Diego, Gamboa earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education and Music Performance in bassoon from UCLA. He also earned a Masters of Music degree in Conducting from Northwestern University, where he studied with Mallory Thompson. Additional conducting studies include work with Tom Lee, Donald Neuen, Victor Yampolsky, Craig Kirchhoff, Kenneth Kiesler, Neal Stulberg, Jerry Junkin, David Effron, David Loebel, Donald Hunsberger, Michael Votta, Kevin Sedatole, Gary Hill and Mark Davis Scatterday. This spring, he will complete his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Michigan, where he is studying with Michael Haithcock.

An accomplished conductor, Gamboa previously held the rank of Captain and served active duty as Conductor and Commander of the United States Air Force Band at Robins Air Force Base, Georgia. He later served as Associate Conductor and Flight Commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe Band at Ramstein Air Base, Germany. He earned his commission from Officer Training School, Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama in February 2011.

Gamboa traveled with the Band of the Air Force Reserve on numerous national and international tours including Spain, Germany, Turkey, Qatar and Kuwait. He also helped plan, execute and edit the band’s final television broadcast Holiday Notes from Home 2011, which featured country music group Little Big Town and singer/songwriter Lee Ann Womack as guest artists. The Band of the Air Force Reserve celebrated a historic second nomination for an Emmy Award in Entertainment Programming for this broadcast, which was viewed by 1.1 million people in 174 countries.

A seasoned educator, Gamboa taught and served as the Instrumental Music Director and Music Department Chair at West Adams Preparatory High School in the Pico-Union neighborhood of Central Los Angeles. During his tenure, he founded and conducted the high school’s marching band, wind ensemble, chamber orchestra and symphonic orchestra. He was also a conducting and chamber music instructor for the National High School Music Institute, where he served as Assistant Conductor for the Wind Ensemble. Additionally, Gamboa taught drum major camps with the United Spirit Association during the summer for more than 15 years. In addition to teaching, he designed the conducting curriculum and trained instructors throughout his time with the drum major camps.

Dynamic Conductor and Educator Kevin Michael Holzman is Named Director of Wind Studies at CCM

Kevin Michael Holzman will begin his new appointment as Director of Wind Studies at CCM on Aug. 15, 2018.

Interim Dean bruce d. mcclung has announced the appointment of Kevin Michael Holzman to the position of Director of Winds Studies at CCM. Holzman joined CCM’s faculty on a visiting basis in 2017. His new appointment will begin on Aug. 15, 2018.

In his new position, Holzman will serve as the music director for three ensembles: the Wind Orchestra, CCM’s premier large wind ensemble, and two chamber ensembles. His academic responsibilities will include teaching graduate conducting, survey of wind literature and related courses as well as the advising and mentoring of wind conducting students in CCM’s MM and DMA programs.

Prior to his appointment as Visiting Assistant Director of Wind Studies at CCM, Holzman earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in conducting at the Eastman School of Music, where he studied with Music Director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, Mark Scatterday, DMA. As the Frederick Fennell Conducting Fellow and 2016 recipient of the prestigious Walter Hagen Prize for Excellence in Conducting, Holzman served as Associate Conductor of the world-renowned Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Wind Orchestra. He regularly appeared as a conductor for OSSIA New Music, including multiple world-premiere performances. He also studied extensively with Neil Varon, Director of Eastman Orchestras.

In summer 2016, Holzman was invited to serve as an associate conductor on the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s first tour in Europe, where he conducted the Eastman Harmonie in Salzburg, Vienna and Prague. He also collaborated with prominent composers David Maslanka and Bert Appermont for the “Celebration of the Symphony” concert with the Eastman Wind Ensemble. The performance was Eastman’s first live-streamed large ensemble concert, which included the North American premiere of Appermont’s Symphony No. 2 The Golden Age. Holzman also served as an Assistant Producer for the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s recent release Sierra Live and upcoming album featuring the music of Jeff Tyzik.

Beyond Eastman, Holzman has worked with professional ensembles including the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. In April 2017, he was appointed conductor of the Music in the American Wild ensemble, a National Endowment for the Arts grant-funded ensemble that commissioned 11 new works in celebration of the 2016 U.S. National Parks Centennial. Holzman recently completed a studio-recording project of commissioned compositions, set for release by ArtistShare NYC in spring 2018. In 2016 Holzman formed and began serving as Music Director of the Upstate Brass Band, an exciting brass ensemble that performs in upstate New York, and was commissioned to record a series of new brass band arrangements by renowned composer/trombonist Bill Reichenbach.

Holzman became the founding Music Director and conductor of the Hobart and William Smith Colleges Wind Ensemble in fall 2016. He successfully recruited and led the ensemble’s inaugural year, and it is now the college’s largest instrumental ensemble. After earning his MM in conducting at the University of Arizona (UA), Holzman had the opportunity to teach and conduct as Interim Principal Conductor for the Wind Symphony at UA’s Fred Fox School of Music during the director’s extended absence from 2012 to 2014. He also served as the Director and Coordinator of the UA Symphonic Band and High School Honor Band during his tenure.

In addition to his work with collegiate and professional ensembles, Holzman is a passionate advocate for music education and access to music in all schools. He recently served as Volunteer Coordinator for ROCmusic, an El Sistema-inspired community music program in Rochester, New York, and he assisted with the UA Outreach Honor Band during his tenure in Tucson, Arizona. He is an honorary member of Phi Mu Alpha, Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi music fraternities.

CCM Student and Alumnus Find Success at University of Oklahoma Conducting Competition

Both a current doctoral student and a recent CCM alumnus made the finals of the University of Oklahoma’s second-ever 4×4 Competition for Conductors and Composers. The competition took place last month and was open to both conductors and composers currently enrolled in a degree program or studying with a recognized professional composer or conductor.

Current CCM student Jiannan Cheng won second place in the conducting competition. A native of China, Cheng is currently pursuing her DMA in conducting under Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson. For her finish, Cheng received a $1,000 cash prize and was able to collaborate with the second-prize winning composer to perform one of their works during a concert with the OU Symphony in February.

Also making the finals was CCM alumnus Boon Hua Lien (MM Wind Conducting, 2013), who studied at CCM and was a teaching assistant under Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price. A native of Singapore, Lien currently lives in Rochester, New York, where he is pursuing his DMA in Orchestral Conducting (and serves as a teaching assistant) at the prestigious Eastman School of Music. He is also a conducting fellow with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra.

CCM Winds’ Concert Series Resumes Jan. 31 With Performance By Chamber Players And Torrential Saxophone Quartet

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies celebrates a diverse collection of repertoire this semester, ranging from Bach to brand new works by CCM’s own talented student composers!

Under the direction of Professor Glenn D. Price, the CCM Chamber Players kick off the performance series at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 31, with a collaborative concert featuring the Torrential Saxophone Quartet, an award-winning CCM student ensemble. The concert’s program includes Philip Glass’ monumental Glassworks, along with original works by CCM student composers. Later on in the semester, the Chamber Players present Saint-Saëns’ cherished Carnival of the Animals (March 6) and Stravinsky’s beloved L’histoire du soldat (April 17).

The CCM Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble join forces in the Masterworks concert on Thursday, February 4, with a program of J.S. Bach’s infamous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and Ives’ patriotic Variations on “America,” featuring guest artist Craig Kirchhoff at the podium.

CCM Doctoral student George Carpten makes his Wind Orchestra debut performing Marco Pütz’s Trumpet Concerto on Tuesday, March 15.

CCM’s Winds Series Rocks Out with Frank Zappa, Goes to Church with Faculty Artist Michael Unger and Much More This Fall

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies kicks off a wide-ranging series of fall performances this week with a pair of concerts on Sept. 17 and 18. These eclectic concert programs feature works by Alfred Reed, Henry Fillmore and several other notable American composers, including rock iconoclast Frank Zappa.

Glenn D. Price, the director of CCM’s Wind Studies program, explains, “People like me grew up with Frank Zappa as a rock icon, producing more records per year then almost any major rock artist. But this was just one side of the man’s talent. Zappa attracted the attention of classical and avant-garde artists who came to appreciate the complexity and thoughtfulness of his music.”

Zappa’s Dog Breath Variations will be featured alongside works by John Adams, John Philip Sousa and Ron Nelson on Friday, Sept. 18, in a CCM Wind Orchestra concert entitled “From Adams to Zappa – American Pioneers,” which Price says is a nod to the “fertile American imagination.”

Later in the season, the CCM Wind Ensemble brings its artistry to the community as it travels to the Hyde Park Community Methodist Church for free a performance celebrating the “king of instruments” – the pipe organ – featuring guest artist Brenda Portman and faculty artist Michael Unger on Sunday, Oct. 11. Under the direction of conductor Angela Holt, the Wind Ensemble will perform an encore presentation of this program in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

CCM Wind Studies Provides International Flair This Spring With World Premieres and Special Guests

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies will present an impressive series of 11 concerts this spring, several of which are free and open to the general public. Tickets are on sale now for all performances requiring paid admission.

Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price and Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Angela Holt have organized an ambitious line-up of concerts for CCM’s four wind ensembles, with performances scheduled between Feb. 8 and April 19.

Highlights of the Spring Winds Series include the return of several familiar faces. CCM alumna Natalie Wren (MM Oboe, 2011) returns to the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall as oboist during the West Point Band’s Academy Wind Quintet’s guest artist performance on Tuesday, Feb. 24. Later on in the semester, Professor Emeritus of Music Terence Milligan, who conducted the CCM Wind Ensemble until his retirement last spring, will also return to the CCM stage as guest conductor for a concert appropriately entitled “A Blast from the Past” on Thursday, March 12.

The Department of Wind Studies will also debut new works this semester. On Wednesday, April 15, the Wind Ensemble will present two premieres: a national premiere by recent graduate Thanapol Setabrahmana (DMA Wind Conducting, 2014) and a world premiere of the first wind band piece by Distinguished Teaching Professor of Music Theory and Composition Miguel Roig-Francolí. CCM Professors Mark Gibson and Randy Gardner join the Wind Ensemble as soloists for this performance.

Student soloists will also get their chance to shine as the Wind Orchestra spotlights the winners of CCM’s annual Young Artist Concerto Competition on Wednesday, March 11.

In addition, the grandiose will be on display in two monumental performances in Corbett Auditorium. On Thursday, Feb. 12, both the Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, along with guest conductor and Dallas Wind Symphony leader Dr. Jerry Junkin will perform the works of Strauss, Mackey, Sparke and more. On Sunday, March 29, CCM’s beloved annual PRISM concert returns, featuring the Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensembles and special guests.

If more intimate performances are your forte, CCM’s Chamber Players and Chamber Winds will fill the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall with entertaining music, including a premiere of a new work by composer Scott Lindroth on Sunday, Feb. 8.

CCM’s Wind Series Honors American Icon Leonard Bernstein, the Art of the American Symphony and More This Fall

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies turns its spotlight on the American composer this fall. From Sept. 21 through Dec. 3, CCM’s Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Chamber Players present a variety of exciting concerts, including several free performances.

Under the direction of Professor Glenn D. Price, the CCM Wind Orchestra opens its season at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, with a celebration of American icon Leonard Bernstein, featuring music from West Side Story, Candide and more.

“It’s hard to believe that it was almost exactly 24 years ago that he passed away,” Price observes. “I was studying at Tanglewood at the time, in no small part because he was going to be there. He conducted what turned out to be his final two concerts for us, in the Shed with the Tanglewood Orchestra, and two days later with the BSO.”

Price honors this American legend with a program of some of Bernstein’s most popular compositions, including Slava, “Suite” from Candide, “Profanation” from Symphony No. 1, ”A Simple Song” from Mass and “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story.

“I am using this opportunity to enlighten our students who were born into a post-Bernstein world about the richness that he provided to many of us. Visiting his music in depth is a great luxury, and one that I hope is meaningful for them,” explains Price.

Following this touching tribute, Price constructs his very own “American Symphony” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Corbett Auditorium, taking pieces from four symphonies by four American composers – Vittorio Giannini, John Barnes Chance, Ingolf Dahl and James Barnes – and creating a new musical mosaic from their works.

The Winds Orchestra Series closes with “War and Peace,” a bombastic evening of Barber’s Commando March, Rautaavara’s A Soldier’s Mass, Gilmore’s Five Folksongs for Soprano, Husa’s Music for Prague 1968 and Reed’s Rejoicing in the Beauty of Peace at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Corbett Auditorium.

CCM’s Wind Ensemble and Chamber Players offer even more opportunities to experience the music of American composers Steve Reich, Eric Whitacre, Michael Kevin Daugherty and more this fall in a series of free concerts. See below for detailed program information.

CCM Celebrates the Career of Retiring Professor Terence Milligan in Concert on April 5

CCM celebrates the retirement of Professor Terence Milligan with a series of special events beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 5. The CCM Wind Ensemble, the UC Bearcat Band, alumni members of Phi Alpha Sinfonia and other special guests will take part in the celebrations, which are free and open to the general public.

The pre-concert festivities begin at 7 p.m. with a pre-concert performance by the UC Bearcat Band in the CCM plaza. Milligan directed the Bearcat band from 1979-1992 and remains close friends with many of the band’s alumni.

A meet and greet in CCM’s Baur room will follow the Bearcat Band performance, culminating in the brass and percussion ensembles performing a special fanfare in the Corbett Center Atrium.

The concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium, featuring the Wind Ensemble, which will perform six different pieces, each holding a special meaning for Professor Milligan.

CCM’s Wind Orchestra Welcomes Special Guests the Oasis Quartet on Feb. 13

CCM’s Wind Orchestra presents “Saxophone Spectacular,” a concert showcasing the beauty of wind instruments, at 8 p.m. tonight (Thursday, Feb. 13) in Corbett Auditorium under the direction of Glenn D. Price.

David Maslanka is an American composer best known for his highly acclaimed wind ensemble compositions. His compositional style is rhythmically intense and extremely complex, which audiences will enjoy in the Oasis Quartet’s world premiere of Maslanka’s Concerto for Saxophone Quartet.

The program will also feature Henry Kucharzyk’s Some Assembly Required and selections from Tielman Susato’s The Danserye.

CCM’s Wind Orchestra Performs The Works of French Composers

The CCM Wind Orchestra concludes 2013 with a spectacular performance of French wind classics at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 4, in Corbett Auditorium.

Director of Wind Studies Glenn D. Price wields the baton as conductor and music director of the prestigious CCM Wind Orchestra, treating the audience to the spectacular composition “Suite Française” by Darius Milhaud, an early 19th century French composer and teacher. Milhaud’s “suite” takes the listener on a daring audible journey through the French countryside beginning on the west coast and moving through France, telling the tale of each region. Audiences will be delighted as the orchestra touches on themes from the beloved Normandie, Bretagne, Ile-de-France, Alsace-Lorraine and Provence regions.

The Wind Orchestra also presents an intriguing composition by Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns, one of France’s most renowned composers. “Occident et Orient” will once again take the audience on a musical journey, crossing cultures from west to east. The piece begins with a rousing march, then transitions into an homage to Turkish janissary music before returning to western themes for its exhilarating finale. Saint-Saëns is also known for his compositions “Carnival of the Animals,” the opera “Samson and Delilah,” “Danse Macabre” and the “Organ Symphony.”

The Wind Orchestra will also perform “Children’s Overture,” a gem by early 20th century French composer Eugene Joseph Bozza. Audiences will be enchanted by Bozza’s elegant, lyrical style.

“Dionysiasques” is a spirited composition by Florent Schmitt inspired by Dionysis, Greek god of the grape harvest, wine and madness. This composition describes a raucous evening festival held in Dionysis’ honor. It begins with the slower party preparations and evolves into a march as the fête kicks into high gear. The music becomes more and more hectic until the final jubilant climax. Schmitt’s other works include “La tragédie de Salome” and “Psalm 47.”

“Pantomime,” one of Pierre Mercure’s first compositions, was completed in 1948. During this time period, Canada, Mercure’s homeland, was going through a national identity shift. This has sparked a debate as to whether “Pantomime” is a nationalistic piece or whether it expresses the influences of the budding surrealist movement. Despite the debate surrounding Mercure’s intentions, “Pantomime” is a lyrical and dramatic piece. It reflects the influences of the French masters, while retaining its own personality and sense of joy. Audiences will happily follow the story of “Pantomime” which depicts a sleeping figure waking, playing gleefully and returning to a resting state.
