CCM Spotlights Talented Young Performers and Acclaimed Guest Artists During Summer 2015 Performance Series

Young artists from all corners of the globe will make their way to Cincinnati this summer to work with CCM’s world-class faculty and renowned guest artists while in residence at the state-of-the-art CCM Village.

CCM offers a wide array of high caliber summer programs, and the general public can experience the artistry themselves during a series of nearly 40 public performances and guest artist recitals running Tuesday, June 2, through Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015.

A complete schedule of summer performances is listed below, with highlights including the Cincinnati World Piano Competition’s Finalists Concert featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on June 13, the Art of the Piano’s Recital Series (curated by CCM faculty member and Cincinnati World Piano Competition Artistic Director Awadagin Pratt) running June 14 – 28, the Classical Guitar Workshop’s Concert Series running July 12 – 18 and a semi-staged production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen on Aug. 8.

This is a rare chance to hear Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, a work premiered by Oppens. Up to 12 young conductors, along with a carefully selected cast, were invited to participate in this one-of-a-kind “opera bootcamp” while in residence at CCM. Working with an internationally renowned faculty, led by Mark Gibson, Director of Orchestral Studies at CCM, these young artists have daily language instruction, text and style sessions and conducting and coaching master classes, and also participate in staging rehearsals, work with singers and lead orchestra rehearsals. The course culminates in a semi-staged performance, with orchestra, of Bizet’s beloved Carmen.

CCM Celebrates Keyboard Mastery with the Annual Bearcat Piano Festival and Pianopalooza Events

CCM explores the world of classical piano this spring with the sixth installment of its annual Bearcat Piano Festival, starting on Monday, March 23, and culminating with the 10th edition of Pianopalooza on Saturday, April 4.

Launched in 2010 by CCM Professor of Piano Awadagin Pratt, this year’s festival features an exciting new joint collaboration with Xavier University, which brings internationally renowned pianist Stephen Hough to CCM’s Corbett Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 30. This special occasion will also serve as Xavier’s inaugural Father John Heim Concert. An extraordinary pianist, composer, writer, teacher and painter, Hough was a 2001 MacArthur Fellowship recipient and received the honor of being named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the art of music in 2014. His performance will include works by Debussy and Chopin.

Hough is not the only internationally renowned performer to grace the CCM stage during the Bearcat Piano Festival this year. Russian pianist Sergei Babayan (Artist-in-Residence at the Cleveland Institute of Music) will perform in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25. A Laureate of Belgium’s Queen Elisabeth Music Competition and multiple time first-prize winner in competitions such as the Casadesus (Cleveland) and Hammamatsu (Japan), Babayan will showcase the works of Pärt, Liszt, Vladimir Ryabov, J. S. Bach, Chopin and Rachmaninov.

Additionally, the Festival will serve as a homecoming for another associate from Xavier. Polina Bespalko, Director of Xavier’s Classical Piano Series and a CCM alumna (AD Piano, 2005; DMA Piano, 2014), will return to Robert J. Werner Recital Hall at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 27, for a free performance highlighted by Franz Liszt’s monumental Sonata in B Minor.

Guest artists for this year’s Bearcat Piano Festival will also come from across the northeastern United States. New York will be on display at 8 p.m. on Monday, March 23, in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall as Professors Jerome Lowenthal of the Julliard School and Ursula Oppens of CUNY and Brooklyn College give a free joint performance of diverse piano works. Also, University of Michigan doctoral student pianists will make a second consecutive trip to CCM for a free concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 29.

This series of performances ultimately leads to the tenth-annual installment of Pianopalooza, which takes the stage in Corbett Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 4. Under the direction of CCM Associate Professor of Piano Michael Chertock, the event is a diverse cornucopia of CCM’s piano faculty and students as well as the CCM Concert Orchestra conducted by Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Aik Khai Pung. This eclectic event will focus on Sergei Rachmaninoff, showcasing three of his masterworks: the Piano Concerto No. 1 in F-sharp Minor, Op. 1; Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43; and the Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor, Op. 30.

Sergei Babayan, piano
Artist-in-Residence at CIM, Sergei Babayan is acclaimed for the immediacy, sensitivity and depth of his interpretations. His philosophy that a recital should reveal a spiritual dimension results in playing that sustains a captivating intensity. A student of such legendary musicians as Gornostayeva, Naumov, Pletnev and Vlasenko at the Moscow Conservatory, Babayan won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions, including the Casadesus and Hammamatsu. Since that time, he has appeared in recital internationally in the most important venues, and with the world’s best orchestras. Additionally Babayan is a frequent two piano collaborator with Martha Argerich.

CCM’s Bearcat Piano Festival welcomes extraordinary pianist, composer, writer, teacher, painter and 2001 MacArthur Fellowship-recipient Stephen Hough to the stage for the inaugural Father John Heim Concert. Hough’s program will include Debussy’s La plus que lente, Estampes, L’isle joyeuxand Children’s Corner and Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23, Ballade No. 2 in F Major, Op. 38, Ballade No. 3 in A-flat Major, Op. 47 and Ballade No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 52. Appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2014 for his services to the art of music, Hough’s concert appearance is being presented in cooperation with the Xavier University Classical Piano Series, directed by Polina Bespalko.

CCM Announces Spring 2015 Calendar of Major Events

This spring, CCM proudly presents over 125 major public performances from Jan. 18 through May 17, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported drama, musical theatre and opera productions!

Highlights of CCM’s spring concert series include the return of Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 23; a CCM Jazz tribute to the music of Ray Charles on Feb. 15; a double-bill performance of Berlioz’s Te Deum and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring by the CCM Philharmonia, Chamber Choir, Chorale and Cincinnati Children’s Choir on March 13; a star-studded Bearcat Piano Festival running March 23 – April 4; and a Spring Dance Concert featuring accompaniment by the CCM Chamber Choir, student percussionists, faculty artist James Tocco and student pianists running April 23 – 25.

The internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet will also continue its 2014-15 concert series at CCM with performances on Jan. 27 and March 31. Recently hailed by The Strad for its “vitality, clarity of line, depth of sound and… impeccable sense of direction,” CCM’s string quartet-in-residence will perform works by Brahms, Bartók, Schubert, Stravinsky and more this spring.

CCM’s Mainstage Series will also resume in early 2015 with a production of Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama The Heidi Chronicles, running Feb. 11 – 15; a highflying trip to Neverland with Peter Pan: The Musical running March 5 – 8; and a production of Mozart’s magnificent opera Così Fan Tutte, running April 9 – 12.

Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work! Groundbreaking Mexican composer Daniel Catán, creator of the operas Il Postino and Florencia en el Amazonas, began an adaptation of the 1941 Frank Capra film Meet John Doe, but it remained unfinished at his untimely death in 2011. Opera Fusion: New Works welcomes a creative team tasked with the completion of the work: Eduardo Diazmuñoz, Michaela Eremiášová, Jairo Duarte-López, and the composer’s widow, Andrea Puente Catán. Following a 10-day residency, the workshop will culminate in a public performance of excerpts of the new opera. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story in 1942, Meet John Doe tells the story of Ann Mitchell, a newspaper columnist who unwittingly sparks a grassroots populist movement with a fictional letter to the editor from “John Doe” protesting society’s ills, and John Willoughby, a homeless former baseball player whom she hires to pose as the public face of John Doe.

Whether it is beyond or still within Romanticism, it is this aesthetic that Professor Michael Cherlin associates with Schoenberg and Webern, most particularly. Nono’s string quartet, a meditation on Diotima, continues that tradition. The lecture will explore the implications of this composition for a poetics of musical interpretation (whose falsifying “scientific” name is analysis).

In Goethe’s Triumph der Empfindsamkeit (1777), sensibility, feeling and sympathy are brutally exposed as trivial obsessions with postures and props. Excess, bad taste and poor behaviour are the focus of Goethe’s hilarious critique of the craze unleashed by his own Sorrows of Young Werther. Embodied in this strange and funny text is satire aimed not only at the cult of Empfindsamkeit and at the works of the artist himself, but also at the conspicuous blurring of public and private spheres, the untoward exposure of personal proclivities and private feeling. Given the ubiquitous text-book designation of C. P. E. Bach as the architect of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ in music, Dr. Annette Richards takes another look at what ‘Empfindsamkeit’ might mean, especially for the composer’s late keyboard works. By examining this music (along with then-contemporary views on humor, satire and other cultural elements), the audience may have to reconsider Bach’s own claims about the competing aesthetics of public and private music.

CCM Spotlights Talented Young Performers and Acclaimed Guest Artists During Summer 2014 Performance Series

Young artists from all corners of the globe will make their way to Cincinnati this summer to work with CCM’s world-class faculty and renowned guest artists while in residence at the state-of-the-art CCM Village.

CCM offers a wide array of high caliber summer programs, and the general public can experience the artistry themselves during a series of nearly 50 public performances and guest artist recitals running Monday, June 9, through Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.

A complete schedule of summer performances is listed below, with highlights including the World Piano Competition’s Finalists Concert featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on June 28, the Art of the Piano’s Guest Artist Recital Series (curated by CCM faculty member and World Piano Competition Artistic Director Awadagin Pratt) running June 27 – July 11, the Classical Guitar Workshop’s Concert Series running July 13 – 19 and a semi-staged production of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) on Aug. 9.

CCM’s Preparatory Department also hosts a number of workshops and immersion programs at CCM Village and at various off-campus locations throughout the summer, including the Cincinnati Young Artist Chamber Music Workshop Series, which features performances by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra cellist and CCM faculty member Alan Rafferty, CCM Professor of Viola Catharine Carroll and CCM string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet. Other highlights include the Centerstage Workshop production of Hoodie playing June 27 – 28 at UC Blue Ash’s Muntz Theater and the Cincinnati Children’s Choir’s summer concert on Aug. 2.

CCM Adds Naumburg Competition Winner Soyeon Kate Lee to Piano Faculty

CCM welcomes Assistant Professor of Music in Piano Soyeon Kate Lee to its faculty. Her appointment begins in August of 2014.

Dean Peter Landgren today announced the appointment of pianist Soyeon Kate Lee to the faculty of CCM’s Department of Piano. First prize winner of the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition in 2010, Lee has been hailed by the New York Times as a pianist with “a huge, richly varied sound, a lively imagination and a firm sense of style,” while the Washington Post has lauded her for her “stunning command of the keyboard.”

Lee joins CCM as Assistant Professor of Music in Piano beginning in August of 2014. Her appointment gives CCM the rare distinction of having two Naumburg Piano Competition winners on faculty (CCM Piano Department Chair Awadagin Pratt also took first prize in 1992).

Lee has been rapturously received as guest soloist with the Cleveland Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, San Diego Symphony, symphony orchestras of Columbus, Bangor, Bozeman, Boca Raton, Wyoming, Bozeman, Cheyenne, Napa Valley, Scottsdale, Abilene, Naples, Santa Fe and Shreveport in the United States; the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra (South Korea), Ulsan Symphony Orchestra (South Korea), Orquesta de Valencia (Spain) and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional (Dominican Republic), including performances under the batons of Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Jahja Ling, Jorge Mester and Otto-Werner Mueller.

An active Naxos recording artist, her third CD featuring Liszt opera transcriptions was released earlier this year and she will return to the Glenn Gould Studio in Toronto for a two-CD recording of Scriabin’s piano works in April.

CCM Alumnus Appointed to Composition Faculty at Capital Normal University in Beijing

CCM alumnus Gao Ping.

Congratulations to CCM alumnus Gao Ping (DMA ’03), who was recently named professor of composition at the Capital Normal University in Beijing! A native of China, Gao also teaches as a guest professor at the China Conservatory of Music.

During his time at CCM, Gao studied piano and composition with James Tocco and Joel Hoffman, respectively.

In addition to his latest academic appointment, Gao also recently toured to Russia and Israel, where his new work “The Four Not-Alike” was premiered with the Forbidden City Chamber Orchestra of Beijing. This same program will be taken on tour to Spain next month.
