CET Spotlights Revolutionary New iPad App Developed by CCM and DAAP Faculty Members

Two University of Cincinnati faculty members will appear on local PBS member station CET at 6 p.m. this Saturday, July 18, to discuss a revolutionary new project that could change the world of psychiatry.

The CET program arts Bridge will feature CCM Assistant Professor of Electronic Media John Hebbeler and DAAP Assistant Professor of Design Emily Verba. The duo are developing an iPad application entitled Brain to Screen, which is a visual and auditory interactive tool for patients diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder as well as their psychotherapists.

The proposed app converges cross-disciplinary expertise in design, sound, psychology, neuroscience and software development in order to deliver immersive, interactive experiences. The Brain to Screen app works in conjunction with a biofeedback headset and allows patients complete control of all visuals and sounds on their iPad screen using only their brainwaves.

The two UC professors and co-investigators bring a great deal of professional experience and expertise to this ambitious project. Professor Hebbeler has over a decade of experience in sound, video and web production, and 10 years of teaching experience in a variety of production-based courses. His area of expertise is creating interactive trans-media compositions that integrate a wide range of technological devices. His focus in this project is the sound development of Brain to Screen, as well as its interaction with the biofeedback headset.

Meanwhile, Professor Verba brings several years of experience in the field of graphic design and design education to this empirical research project. Her area of expertise and research focus is data visualization — the simplified depiction of complex content for ease of understanding by the masses. She is spearheading the visualization of biofeedback headset data and the design of an interface for psychotherapists to access and interpret the information collected from the app.

The arts Bridge segment will also bring Hebbeler together with several current and former students from CCM’s Division of Electronic Media and UC Blue Ash’s Department of Electronic Media Communications. Alumnus Don Hancock (BFA Electronic Media, 2006) is producing the story, and Deshon Able (AAS Electronic Media Technology, 2013) acts as the production assistant; furthermore, current E-Media student Ari Kruger is also working at CET as an intern, writer and editor.

arts Bridge is a locally-produced program that is part of a unique public television collaboration. Features about Cincinnati area arts and artists are paired with stories from across the country. In addition, Cincinnati area segments from arts Bridge are made available to public television stations nationally, extending the reach of greater Cincinnati arts well beyond southwest Ohio.

CCM Prep Announces Continuation of its New Horizons Orchestra Program

We are thrilled to announce the continuation of the CCM Preparatory Department‘s (CCM Prep) popular New Horizon Orchestra, an innovative program for beginning musicians over the age of 50 who want to learn to play a musical instrument. No previous musical experience is required, so it is truly “never too late!”

Come to CCM Prep’s “Play Days” this month to learn more about the New Horizons Orchestra and for the opportunity to try out various string instruments under the guidance of CCM educators and other local string professionals. Instrument purchase and rental information will also be available at each of these meetings. CCM Spotlights Talented Young Performers and Acclaimed Guest Artists During Summer 2014 Performance Series

Young artists from all corners of the globe will make their way to Cincinnati this summer to work with CCM’s world-class faculty and renowned guest artists while in residence at the state-of-the-art CCM Village.

CCM offers a wide array of high caliber summer programs, and the general public can experience the artistry themselves during a series of nearly 50 public performances and guest artist recitals running Monday, June 9, through Saturday, Aug. 9, 2014.

A complete schedule of summer performances is listed below, with highlights including the World Piano Competition’s Finalists Concert featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on June 28, the Art of the Piano’s Guest Artist Recital Series (curated by CCM faculty member and World Piano Competition Artistic Director Awadagin Pratt) running June 27 – July 11, the Classical Guitar Workshop’s Concert Series running July 13 – 19 and a semi-staged production of Donizetti’s L’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) on Aug. 9.

CCM’s Preparatory Department also hosts a number of workshops and immersion programs at CCM Village and at various off-campus locations throughout the summer, including the Cincinnati Young Artist Chamber Music Workshop Series, which features performances by Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra cellist and CCM faculty member Alan Rafferty, CCM Professor of Viola Catharine Carroll and CCM string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet. Other highlights include the Centerstage Workshop production of Hoodie playing June 27 – 28 at UC Blue Ash’s Muntz Theater and the Cincinnati Children’s Choir’s summer concert on Aug. 2.

CCM’s Preparatory Department Celebrates 35 Years of Cincinnati Junior Strings

CCM’s Preparatory Department (CCM Prep) celebrates the 35th anniversary of the Cincinnati Junior Strings ensemble with a winter concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15, at the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash College Muntz Theater. This special event will honor recently retired Cincinnati Junior Strings founder Gerald Doan and new director Rachel Bierkan.

The 43 talented string students performing in this orchestra range in age from 9 – 14 years old. Under the direction of Bierkan, Jennifer Cox and Betty Anne Gottlieb, they will perform a variety of classical works, many arranged by Doan specifically for the Cincinnati Junior Strings!

Alumni of of the Cincinnati Junior Strings are encouraged to attend the Dec. 15 concert and perform with the orchestra. A reception will follow the performance, and both the concert and reception are free and open to the public.

Starting Jan. 15, 2014, CCM Prep will hold its first New Horizons Orchestra lessons and rehearsal. Lessons and rehearsals will be held on Wednesday mornings from 9-11 a.m. on the fourth floor of the Tangeman University Center (TUC), which is located next to CCM with easy access from the CCM garage. The cost of the program will be $125, not including instrument rental. BettyAnne Gottlieb, Assistant Professor of Music Education (Strings) at CCM, will serve as the New Horizons Orchestra’s conductor assisted by area string teachers and CCM music students. UC Electronic Media Students Honored at 2013 Ohio Valley Regional EMMY Awards

Two students from CCM E-Media will be honored by the Ohio Valley Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) at the 49th Annual Ohio Valley Regional Emmy Awards on Saturday, July 20!

A 2012 graduate of CCM E-Media, Nick Lipari will receive a Student Production Award as editor for “Last Night in Town.”

Current student Tim Neumann will receive an Honorable Mention Award in the Commercial category for his work as co-writer/co-director/editor of “The Field of E-Media.”

Students from CCM E-Media have won six Regional EMMY Awards over the past three years, and won multiple national awards annually for the past 18 years.

Please note the following corrections and updates to CCM’s schedule of major events for the spring:

• CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute (April 4 – 7) will be directed by Steven Goldstein.

• The UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses and Cabaret Singers concert originally scheduled for March 6 (and cancelled due to last Wednesday’s inclement weather) has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

• CCM’s Preparatory Department will present the Cincinnati Junior Strings’ Spring Concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 12, in the Muntz Theater at UC Blue Ash. This concert is free and open to the general public.

CCM Preparatory Department Announces 2012 Summer Programs

The Preparatory Department of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM Prep) is now accepting registrations for its 2012 summer programs. Programs will be offered at UC’s Clifton campus and at UC Blue Ash College.

This year’s new program offerings include a theatre camp for adults and a ballet camp for young dancers featuring story ballets.
