CCM Jazz Ensemble Wows Audiences With Jazz At Lincoln Center Debut

CCM’s acclaimed Jazz Ensemble made its Jazz at Lincoln Center debut last week, kicking off this month’s CINCYinNYC activities. If you were unable to catch any of the ensemble’s three sets at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola on May 6, you can enjoy video highlights courtesy of WCPO’s Matt Peiken here.

The Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand also provided a recap of the evening and declared, “if the enthusiastic response of the sold-out crowd at Dizzy’s club is any indication, New York is in for a treat.” You can read her full review here.

CCM’s CINCYinNYC offerings continue at 7:30 p.m. this evening (May 12), as the 92nd Street Y presents the Ariel Quartet. You can learn more about that performance here.

CCM Jazz Ensembles ‘Git Sassy’ on Sunday, Nov. 10

Guest artist Diego Rivera joins the CCM Jazz Ensembles for a musical tribute to Thad Jones on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Guest artist Diego Rivera joins the CCM Jazz Ensembles for a musical tribute to Thad Jones on Sunday, Nov. 10.

The CCM Jazz Ensembles present “Don’t Git Sassy – The Music of Thad Jones” as the next installment in CCM’s 2013-14 Jazz Series. This evening of homage to jazz master Jones will be presented at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 10, in Corbett Auditorium under the direction of Scott Belck and Dominic Marino. Guest artist Diego Rivera, saxophone, joins the CCM Big Bands for this one-night-only celebration!

Thad Jones (1923-86) was an American jazz trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader. His music embodies the height of sophistication, the depths of hard-driving swing, the relentless groove of the blues and the beauty of a compositional style like no other.

The audience will enjoy jazz classics such as Jones’ hymn-like “To You,” a piece once performed by the Count Basie Orchestra combined with the Duke Ellington Orchestra in their only recording together, and other soulful favorites including “Low Down” and “Willow Weep for Me.” Certainly, the evening wouldn’t be complete without energetic renditions of “This Bass Was Made for Walkin’” and, of course, “Don’t Git Sassy.”

The world’s best up-and-coming jazz trumpet players will converge at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) this month to compete for $15,000 in total prizes during the International Trumpet Guild‘s 2013 Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition, hosted by the Herb Alpert Foundation.

From a pool of 32 contenders hailing from all four corners of the globe, five finalists will strive to craft the most creative solos in exciting displays of virtuosity and artistry during the Competition’s Final Round, which will take place from 1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium on the campus of the University of Cincinnati. This event is free and open to the general public, and it will also be streamed live on Livestream (link below).

Three of the most famous and successful jazz trumpet performers of the last 40 years will judge this year’s competition, including:

  • Byron Stripling, artistic director of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, who has had a long performance career with some of the best bands in the world, including the GRP All-Star Band, the Count Basie Orchestra and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band;
  • Bobby Shew, internationally renowned soloist and designer of the popular 8310Z Yamaha trumpet, who has performed with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, the Buddy Rich Big Band and Maynard Ferguson’s Big Band among others; and
  • Jon Faddis, often likened to Dizzy Gillespie, a former member of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra who has shared the stage with musicians such as Charles Mingus, Oscar Peterson and Lionel Hampton.

In honor of the legendary brass pedagogue and author for whom the competition is named, the Competition’s Final Round will be preceded by a Caruso Clinic at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Clinicians Vince DiMartino and Liesl Whitaker will lead this stimulating session, which is free and open to the public.
