Panelists for the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT) have recognized the CCM and Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center co-production of  Parade with four LCT nominations:

CCM Musical Theatre and the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center Present Tony Award-Winning ‘Parade’ Next Month

Next month, the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center in Covington, Kentucky, presents Alfred Uhry and Jason Robert Brown’s Parade, the 2000 Tony Award winner for “Best Book” and “Best Score.” This transformational story of a country at odds with its declarations of equality is brought to life by the remarkable talent from CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre!

Running April 5 – 21 in the Carnegie’s Otto M. Budig Theatre, Parade is directed by Ed Cohen and Dee Anne Bryll with musical direction by Stephen Goers.

CCM Announces Spring 2013 Calendar of Major Events

CCM is delighted to announce its spring schedule of performances. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM presents more than 100 major public performances from Jan. 12 through May 19, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported opera, drama and musical theatre productions.

CCM’s spring semester performance schedule includes the return of Cincinnati’s premiere fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 18, an evening of motion-picture music featuring acclaimed film composer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman on Jan. 27, a celebration of Giuseppe Verdi’s sacred masterwork Requiem on Feb. 1 and 2, a monumental “Mahler Marathon” on March 2, the Ariel String Quartet’s inaugural season finale on April 9, a guest artist recital by acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee on April 13 and the eighth installment of CCM’s popular Pianopalooza concert on April 21.

Also this spring, CCM’s Division of Electronic Media presents the 10-part Global Lens Film Series (Jan. 14 – April 15), Cincinnati Children’s Choir celebrates its 20th anniversary (March 9), the Classical Guitar Department celebrates its 40th anniversary (April 6) and CCM’s year-long Kurt Weill Festival continues with a variety of unique concerts and productions (Feb. 28 – March 12).

CCM’s production of Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Tim Rice’s Chess has earned four nominations from the League of Cincinnati Theatres (LCT)! The LCT also distinguished the rock musical as a recommended production: Outstanding Production (musical), Ensemble, Lead Actor (Julian Decker) and Lead Actress (Aubrey Ireland). Congratulations to the entire creative team!

Loosely based on the lives of chess grandmasters Bobby Fischer and Anatoly Karpov, Chess involves a romantic triangle between two top players (an American and a Russian) and the woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.

In her review of Chess for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Jackie Demaline writes, “It’s easy to be swept up in the spectacle conjured by director Aubrey Berg – great singing, great dancing, jaw-dropping costuming, superb orchestral support (led by Stephen Goers), sharp techno scenic design (by Mark Halpin and Alan Hanson).”

Theatre critic Rick Pender reviews Chess in today’s CityBeat Stage Door blog: “The story is set in Bangkok and Budapest during a mid-1970s world chess championship — and it’s driven by gamesmanship between nations, between lovers and, of course, between chess players. I saw the opening on Thursday, and it’s a BIG show with a gigantic cast. Several leading roles are double cast (with more juniors than seniors, in fact, which bodes well for CCM productions for this season and next). In particular, Matthew Paul Hill, playing the Russian grand master Anatoly, lifted the roof of Corbett Auditorium with his powerful baritone voice singing the stirring ‘Anthem,’ the Act 1 finale.”

CCM alumnus and Mamma Mia! star Aaron Lazar (MFA ’00) was featured on Broadway.com’s “Broadway Buzz” column earlier this week.

“Aubrey Berg at the Cincinnati Conservatory gave me the chance to perform with the best in the country in Broadway caliber productions,” Lazar explains. “I had two years of invaluable time spent learning the art of musical theater from Bubba. He directed me as Cervantes/Quixote in Man of La Mancha and to this day it’s one of the top performances I’ve given.”
