Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser returns in early 2020 when CCM presents Moveable Feast. Help fuel the future of the arts and light the way for CCM students at this unique benefit event on Friday, Jan. 17, 2020.

Hosted by CCMpower — a dedicated volunteer group comprised of fans, advocates and alumni — Moveable Feast showcases students and faculty members in an evening of world-class live entertainment. For one night only, Cincinnati audiences can experience CCM’s student stars of tomorrow in a variety of performances that showcase the full spectrum of the performing and media arts. The funds raised by the event enable CCMpower to fuel the future of the arts by awarding student scholarships and grants.

Attendees roam through the expansive CCM Village, socializing and enjoying dinner-by-the-bite provided by Jeff Thomas Catering while creating their own menu of artistic experiences. Guests plan their own schedule of 20-minute samplings of student and faculty entertainment, including Jazz, Choral, Musical Theatre, Piano, Opera, Acting, Dance and Orchestra performances, along with tours of CCM’s Electronic Media facilities, Lighting Design labs and other backstage areas.

This year’s Moveable Feast celebrates the contributions of Trish Bryan to CCM and the Cincinnati arts community. Bryan has been instrumental in creating the artistic landscape that is unique to the Queen City. She has served as the President of the Friends of CCM (now CCMpower), Chair of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Board of Trustees, Chair of the Board of Trustees for the American Classical Music Hall of Fame and lent her expertise and time to countless arts organizations. Her leadership and service to the Cincinnati arts community and to CCM has been invaluable and helped to create the thriving artistic community that we enjoy in Cincinnati today.

CCMONSTAGE Dance’s production of The Art of Motion opens tonight, Dec. 5, and runs through Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019, at Patricia Corbett Theater. Directed by CCM Professor of Dance Deirdre Carberry, the mixed-repertoire performance features new original works by CCM faculty and a classical ballet masterpiece. Act I features “Jardin Animé” from Le Corsaire restaged by Carberry with choreography by Marius Petipa. Next is Passengers, by CCM Dance Department Chair Shauna Steele, which is inspired by Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and the artwork of Gustav Klimt. CCM Professor of Dance Michael Tevlin’s Remembrance, set to music by Erik Satie, is presented in memory of pianist David Ralphs, who provided musical accompaniment for CCM Dance for more than 30 years.

Act II opens with Amanita Virosa, an urban Alice in Wonderland tea party choreographed by Steele. The Art of Motion closes with En Tournée, choreographed by CCM Professor of Dance Jiang Qi and set to music by Shostakovich.

Performances will last approximately one hour and 30 minutes, including one intermission.

CCM Dance Celebrates The Art of Motion on Dec. 5-8

CCM opens its new CCMONSTAGE Dance Series with The Art of Motion, which runs Thursday, Dec. 5 through Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Directed by CCM Professor of Dance Deirdre Carberry, the mixed-repertoire performance features original works by CCM faculty and a classical ballet masterpiece.

Act I features “Jardin Animé” from Le Corsaire with choreography by Marius Petipa. In this scene, Carberry restages the gathering of the harem in a lush garden to celebrate beauty amidst the flowers.

Next is Passengers, created by CCM Dance Department Chair Shauna Steele. Inspired by Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and the artwork of Gustav Klimt, this piece explores the interconnectedness of humanity and the idea that, even when we feel alone, we are still part of a vast web of relationships.

CCM Professor of Dance Michael Tevlin’s Remembrance is presented in memory of pianist David Ralphs. Set to music by Erik Satie, the work celebrates Ralphs’ contributions to CCM’s Dance department, for which he provided musical accompaniment for more than 30 years.

Celebrate the Holidays with CCM’s Annual Feast of Carols

CCM ushers in the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019, with Feast of Carols, an annual concert featuring festive choral favorites performed by the CCM Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra; UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses, Cincinnati Youth Choir and outstanding guest choirs from local high schools.

A tradition that dates back more than 100 years, Feast of Carols showcases an eclectic mix of holiday songs including classics like Carol of the Bells, Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, Silent Night, and many more.

Conductors Earl Rivers, Brett Scott, Robyn Lana, Molly Getsinger, Matthew Coffey, Sarah J. Baker, Tracy Carpenter, Anthony Nims and Jeffrey Stern lead the choirs on stage and invite audience members to join in for “carol sings” throughout the performance.

The featured guest choir during the 2 p.m. concert on Saturday, Dec. 7 is the Walnut High School Senior Ensemble, Anthony Nims, director. Little Miami Select Choirs, led by Sarah J. Baker, are featured in the 5 p.m. concert on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 features St. Xavier High School’s Ensemble X, led by Jeffrey Stern. Milford School Choirs, led by Tracy Carpenter, are featured in the 5 p.m. performance on Sunday, Dec. 8.

First Look: CCMONSTAGE ‘The Bartered Bride’

CCMONSTAGE Opera’s production of The Bartered Bride continues tonight, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 24, at Patricia Corbett Theater. Part bubbly operetta and part Bohemian folk pageant, CCM sets The Bartered Bride in a Czech community in Texas in 1948. Mařenka is arranged to marry the son of a rich landowner, but she is in love with someone else. Defiantly, Mařenka vows before her parents that she will only accept her love, Jeník, as her husband. As her parents and the matchmaker fight for the arranged marriage, the young lovers fight against tradition in order to be together.

“This story lends itself wonderfully to being shaped from a modern point of view,” says CCM Artist Diploma student Audrey Chait, director of the opera. “This production explores what it means to be a young American immigrant, preserving the traditions of the old country while embracing a new way of life.”

CCM’s production is conducted by guest artist and CCM alumnus Levi Hammer and features a new English singing libretto by CCM Opera faculty member Kathleen Kelly. The opera’s original libretto is by Karel Sabina. The process of translation and adaptation started between Kelly and Chait in the summer. In order to make the translation more authentic to the immigrant experience, some text is left in the original Czech.

“In the spirit of realism, the folk songs are sung as-is, as are moments when characters do not want to filter their most urgent thoughts through a second language,” Chait adds.

CCM Jazz and Musical Theatre present Duke Ellington’s “Nutcracker Suite” Nov. 24

CCM presents a special seasonal treat at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019, as CCMONSTAGE Jazz and Musical Theatre unite to present Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite in Corbett Auditorium.

One of the most influential jazz musicians of the 20th century, Duke Ellington recorded The Nutcracker Suite for the Columbia record label in 1960. The album featured jazz interpretations of well-known melodies by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, arranged by Ellington and Billy Strayhorn.

Under the musical direction of Scott Belck, dancers from CCM’s Musical Theatre program will join the Jazz Orchestra to transform The Nutcracker Suite’s romantic orchestrations into jumping jazz melodies, including “Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes),” “Peanut Brittle Brigade” and “Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy).” Featuring choreography by Diane Lala, a classical ballet becomes cool-cat jazz, infused with Vegas glitz, Hollywood glamour and a little New York razzmatazz.

CCM Commemorates 50th Anniversary Year of Stonewall Uprising in Nov. 26 concert

The CCM Wind Symphony performs powerful works by LGBTQ+ composers to commemorate the 50th anniversary year of the Stonewall Uprising on Nov. 26, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

The CCM Wind Symphony marks the 50th anniversary year of the Stonewall Uprising with a special performance at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019 in Corbett Auditorium. Exclusively featuring works by LGBTQ+ composers, the concert includes John Corigliano’s Grammy Award-winning song cycle Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan.

The Mr. Tambourine Man concert also features the world premiere of Un-Masqued by featured guest composer David Clay Mettens, Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Jennifer Higdon’s Mysterium and Omar Thomas’ A Mother of a Revolution!. Thomas’ piece is dedicated to Martha P. Johnson, a pioneering leader of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and Stonewall Uprising.

“I strongly believe in the power of music to challenge prejudice and hate,” says CCM Interim Division Head of Ensembles and Conducting Kevin Michael Holzman, music director and conductor of the concert. “The inspiration for this concert is to both recognize the importance of the LGBTQ+ rights movement (especially to the arts) and to commemorate the 50^th anniversary of one of the most pivotal moments in this movement’s history.”

The Stonewall Uprising began in the early hours of June 28, 1969, when New York City police raided the Stonewall Inn, an LGBTQ+ bar and, today, a National Historic Landmark. This raid sparked a series of riots and protests that served as a significant catalyst for the modern gay rights movement in the U.S.

Funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this program provides an unparalleled learning experience for graduate-level violin, viola, violoncello and double bass players coming from populations that are historically underrepresented in classical music. Symphony Magazine recently spotlighted the CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship in a story that focused on the “new cultural and economic directions redefining and expanding the role of the conservatory in the 21^st century.”

CSO/CCM Diversity Fellow Benefits:

• Receive full tuition scholarship support while enrolled in a two-year Master of Music or Artist Diploma program at CCM.
• Receive a $10,000 per year graduate stipend and one-time Graduate School Dean’s Excellence Award of $3,000 from CCM.
• Receive access to orchestral audition and professional development stipends.

In addition, as many as five CSO/CCM Diversity Fellows can be selected annually to participate in an eight-week summer residency with the Chautauqua Symphony Orchestra through a partnership with the Chautauqua Institution of New York.

Participants will be paired with CSO coach/mentors for the duration of their Fellowship. An administrative liaison will also be assigned to support Fellows. Download the informational poster.

Important Dates

CCM and the CSO are now accepting applications for the 2020-22 class of Fellows. The application deadline is Dec. 1, 2019. For application and audition requirements, visit us at ccm.uc.edu/chance2perform.

Live auditions with CCM faculty will be held on Jan. 17-18, Jan. 24-25 and Feb. 14-15 of 2020.

Finalists will audition for the CSO on March 14, 2020, in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

The demand is high for CCMONSTAGE‘s 2019-20 musical theatre productions. After experiencing the college’s production of 42nd Street last week, ArtsWave dubbed CCM as “the jewel in the Queen City’s crown.” The League of Cincinnati Theatres beckoned audiences to “come see the future of Broadway at CCM and get a first look at the next generation headed to the Great White Way.”

After The Rocky Horror Show closes, you only have one more chance to see CCM’s musical theatre stars in action during the 2019-20 performance season. The next big musical presented by CCM is The Secret Garden, which runs March 5-8, 2020 in Corbett Auditorium. Tickets for CCM’s spring production of Bright Star (April 2-5, 2020) are currently booked up!

Based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden is directed and choreographed by CCM alumnus Connor Gallagher (BFA, ’06) who is currently the choreographer for Broadway’s Beetlejuice. The Secret Garden is a “turn-of-the-century fairy tale” (Los Angeles Times) that won three Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. Centered on an orphaned girl and her ailing cousin, the musical offers a magical tale of forgiveness and renewal. Learn more about the musical and purchase tickets while you still can!

CCM Jazz Celebrates the Music of Stevie Wonder Nov. 3

The groove is guaranteed to be “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” at UC College-Conservatory of Music’s tribute concert to Stevie Wonder. Hear the hits of this legendary artist brought to life by the CCM Jazz Lab Band and Cincinnati native Tyshawn Colquitt at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 at CCM’s Corbett Auditorium.

This concert features the soul of Stevie Wonder in an evening filled with such classics as “Superstition,” “My Cherie Amour,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” “I Just Called to Say I Love You” and “Higher Ground.” This one-night-only performance features guest vocalist Tyshawn Colquitt, a seven-time winner of Showtime at the Apollo and recent contestant on NBC’s The Voice singing competition.

About Tyshawn Colquitt
Tyshawn Colquitt is no stranger to singing competitions. He competed on NBC’s show The Voice and he is a seven-time winner of Showtime at the Apollo. The 24-year-old from Avondale won his first competition on the Apollo stage at the age of 13. While he was a student at Cincinnati’s School for the Creative and Performing Arts, Colquitt was presented with numerous awards including the prestigious Corbett Award.

He was recruited by Berklee College of Music and awarded a “presidential” scholarship that he turned down in order to participate in the 2014 “New Wave” European competition. He represented the U.S. in the finals of the international competition, which set out to discover the world’s next best pop star.

Colquitt is a talented singer, songwriter, pianist and budding producer. He is currently recording his first solo album and was recently featured on Bootsy Collins’ latest album “World Wide Funk.”
