Local Arts Critics Praise CCM’s ‘Seussical’

CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Seussical continues at 8 p.m. tonight, Oct. 25, at Patricia Corbett Theater! Local critics praised the musical, which runs through Sunday, Oct. 29 as part of CCM’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.

Directed by Vince DeGeorge with musical direction by CCM graduate student Luke Flood, Seussical was written by CCM alumnus Stephen Flaherty (BM Composition, 1982) and Lynn Ahrens. It is now one of the most often performed musicals in the United States, but CCM’s production “demonstrates that the tale can be presented in a fresh way, with ingenious direction and design,” writes Scott Cain of Talkin’ Broadway. Cain hails CCM’s mounting of Seussical as “truly one of a kind.” He writes:

“The story of love, loyalty, sacrifice and caring still comes through clearly in this new approach, and the program continues to showcase its talented pre-professional performers. The direction, design and dances are noteworthy and will make this production one to remember for some time.”

In his review of Seussical for The Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard declares: “It’s easily the best costume work I’ve ever seen.” He also praises the performances from CCM Musical Theatre students, the musical’s lighting design by CCM student Eric McCandless and wig and make-up design by professor Kelly Yurko. Laurel Humes recommends to “move your caboosical to CCM’s Seussical” in her review for the League of Cincinnati Theatres. Humes writes: “The show pulls out all the stops: Broadway-worthy costumes, lighting, staging and standout performances. All what audiences expect from CCM.”

In her review for The News Record, Anne Simedinger praises the Seussical performances: “The entire cast had such contagious energy through the entire show, which kept audience members on the edge of their seats.” She adds:

“The vibrant colors in the props, costumes and lighting against the primarily black and white set paints the picture as the story unfolds. This is a production to not be missed.”

Local critics have praised CCM’s Mainstage production of A Chorus Line, which continues tonight and runs through October 30 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Directed and choreographed by Diane Lala with musical direction from Roger Grodsky, A Chorus Line gives an inside look at the world of musical theatre by telling the story of a group of Broadway hopefuls as they audition for the next big hit.

Scott Cain of Talkin’ Broadway says the musical’s cast “shows themselves to be true triple threat performers. All of the dancing is sharp and cohesive, executed with full energy.” He went on to compare A Chorus Line with another Tony Award-winning musical that is currently on Broadway:

“A Chorus Line has a lot in common with the hottest show on Broadway right now, Hamilton. Both were developed Off-Broadway at the Public Theatre, won numerous Tony Awards including Best Musical, and won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama, a rarity for musicals. CCM’s production is skillfully helmed, performed, and designed, and is a wonderful example of this show in its traditional form.”

The show was praised as being “one of the best shows in Cincinnati,” by the League of Cincinnati Theatres. The reviewer wrote: “A Chorus Line and CCM Musical Theatre Program are a perfect match.  These students LIVE these stories. They bring a passion and a pathos that is visceral, making this musical about an audition as true today as it was in 1975, when the show first hit Broadway.  Director Diane Lala’s cast delivers so many great moments in this show that it is a 10, both for dance and looks.”

Rafael de Acha praised CCM’s “lineup of excellence” and A Chorus Line‘s creative team in his review of the production on Rafael’s Music Notes. “The stunning visual aspects of the production again remind us that CCM is unarguably one of the top theatre arts training centers in the country,” he wrote. “From Matthew D. Hamel‘s clean-lined and symbolic set to Lindi-Joy Wilmot‘s period-perfect costumes to Jeremy Dominik‘s gorgeous lighting, the show’s design by students is as good as you will get outside of the school by seasoned pros.”

World Premiere of CCM’s “They Were You” Gets Rave Reviews

Critics praised CCM’s world premiere of They Were You, a musical revue of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt songs, which ran Oct. 5-9 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg, the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM, They Were You featured musical arrangements by CCM faculty member Stephen Goers and choreography by alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012).

In his review for The Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard called CCM’s They Were You “a magical night of theater.” He praised Berg’s direction, the “excellent” cast, Johannigman’s “fun, logical” choreography and Goers’ “beyond beautiful” musical arrangements. 

“There’s no need to single out any one of the six outrageously gifted young artists in the cast,” said Rafael de Acha in his review of the production on Rafael’s Music Notes. “Let me merely give you their names and entreat you to make mental note of them, with the assurance that, sooner than you think, you will be hearing these names: Gabe Wrobel, Emily Fink, Stavros Koumbaros, Aria Brasswell, Karl Amundsen and Michelle Coben.”

Teddy Gumbleton of the League of Cincinnati Theatres wrote that each of the six student performers sang “like a dream, navigating the lush harmonies and infusing each song with the necessary depth and wit. Together they work flawlessly as an ensemble, infusing the rich music with tremendous character.”

In a review for Talkin’ Broadway, Scott Cain said CCM’s Jones and Schmidt revue “revealed a thoughtful, varied and pleasant journey through pair’s exemplary work, and showcased some fine performances and design.” Cain praised the production’s “beautiful, night-sky mural” backdrop designed by CCM faculty member Thomas Umfrid. He also proposed that They Were You “will hopefully be licensed and made available for other theater companies to perform.”

Accomplished Director and Choreographer Vince DeGeorge is Named Joseph Weinberger Chair of Acting for the Lyric Stage at CCM

CCM Dean Peter Landgren has announced the appointment of Vince DeGeorge to the position of Assistant Professor and Joseph Weinberger Chair of Acting for the Lyric Stage, a faculty position shared by CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre and Department of Opera. DeGeorge first joined CCM as a Visiting Professor in the fall of 2013. His new appointment becomes effective on August 15, 2015.

“I would like to thank Dean Peter Landgren, Musical Theatre Chair Aubrey Berg and Opera Chair Robin Guarino for selecting me for this important post,” DeGeorge remarked on his new appointment. “I would also like to thank my colleagues at CCM for welcoming me so graciously. I am grateful and excited to begin this new challenge.”

DeGeorge made a considerable impact during his tenure as a Visiting Professor, directing and/or choreographing seven CCM productions during the last two seasons. Most recently, he served as director and choreographer on CCM’s acclaimed Studio Series production of Harvey Schmidt and Tom Jones’ rarely produced 110 in the Shade. “DeGeorge infuses action into a story which could easily be presented in a stagnant fashion,” theatre critic Scott Cain observed in his review of the musical for Talkin’ Broadway, ultimately calling the show, “a praiseworthy one, with strong direction and first-rate performances.”

Local audiences will not have to wait long to see DeGeorge’s next project for the CCM stage. This summer, in addition to directing a feature length film (entitled 18 Mornings), DeGeorge will serve as stage director for the Opera Studio Summer Workshop. He will then direct two productions during CCM’s 2015-16 performance season: a Studio Series production of William Hauptman’s musical Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in October of 2015 and a Mainstage Series production of Leoš Janácek’s opera The Cunning Little Vixen in April of 2016.

An alumnus of CCM, DeGeorge (BFA Musical Theatre, 1992) recently completed his MFA in Directing and Public Dialogue at Virginia Tech. Following his graduation from CCM, DeGeorge performed as an actor and dancer in regional theaters across the country and was a member of the New York based contemporary dance company dre.dance under artistic directors and choreographers Taye Diggs and Andrew Palermo.

DeGeorge directed numerous works during his time in New York. Highlights include the musical revue Nashville, which he co-wrote and directed in 2009. The production won Nightlife, Bistro and Mac Awards that year. In 2011, DeGeorge directed New York City’s first fully staged production of The Exonerated to critical acclaim.

At Virginia Tech, DeGeorge directed and designed A Dream Play by August Strindberg, and productions of Chekhov’s The Vagabond and Three Sisters. He also developed, directed and designed The Jo Carson Project, a new musical based on the writings and theories of the Appalachian storyteller and playwright, Jo Carson.

During his studies at Virginia Tech, DeGeorge was also a company member of Building Home, a participatory theatre and music engagement project, led by Bob Leonard along with Jon Catherwood-Ginn. Building Home uses theater to foster healthy civic dialogue among the citizens of the New River Valley concerning pressing regional issues and planning for sustainable communities.

As a part of the Blacksburg Summer Arts Festival 2014, DeGeorge was engaged to design and build Life In The Trees – an art installation, purposed as both a gallery exhibition and the theatrical setting for two performance pieces, adapted and directed by DeGeorge as well.  While working on Life In The Trees, DeGeorge collaborated with Alaskan artist Kesler Woodard, as well as novelist Tom Gardner.

DeGeorge has spent the last 14 years researching and developing the Theatrical Awareness Practice, a somatic and experiential theater technique that trains the actor to live fully in their experiential mind/body. This practice consists of deeply researched and highly structured improvisational explorations that are designed to reacquaint the artist with the infinite intelligence and creative capacity of their own human body experience.

CCM’s ‘Legally Blonde’ Receives Rave Reviews

In his review for the Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard writes, “Legally Blonde – The Musical is an energetic, satisfying show and CCM has brought all of the elements together continuing their reputation as one of the best musical theatre programs in the country.” Sheppard singles out the performance of senior Lawson Young (one of two CCM students playing Elle Woods in this double-cast production), going so far as to say, “Of the five [different] productions I’ve seen, she’s by far the best and that includes the national tour and the [Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera] last summer.”

David Lyman has similar praise for the production and for senior Sarah Bishop in his review for the Cincinnati Enquirer. “What’s really refreshing about this production,” he observes, “is that, as Elle, Sarah Bishop gives a measure of humanity that we rarely get to see. We see Elle develop a conscience and compassion and – heaven forbid – come to love a man to whom she never would have given the time of day at the outset of the show.”

The News Record‘s review praised the entire company, with Aidan Smith writing, “The humor offered by every cast member made this musical stand out, and it showed in the audience’s constant giggling.”

“Featuring strong performances, fun choreography, and a superb set design, this mounting is a true crowd pleaser,” Scott Cain observes in his review for Talkin’ Broadway.

In his review for Behind the Curtain Cincinnati, Rob Bucher calls CCM’s production, “a very fun and entertaining show. Excellent work.”

Rick Pender profiles Legally Blonde director/choreographer and CCM Professor of Musical Theatre Diane Lala in his “Curtain Call” column for Cincinnati CityBeat, observing that “the evidence of her success is currently onstage at CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.”
