CCM Announces Memorial Service for Alumna and Former Faculty Member Barbara Clark (Paver)

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) will celebrate the life and teaching legacy of Barbara Clark (Paver), DMA, in a memorial service scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. A reception in the Baur Room will follow. A video stream of the service will be available at ccm.uc.edu/resources/technology/barbaraclarkmemorial. A CCM alumna and a beloved member of our faculty from 2004-13, Clark passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 2, 2018.

Most recently an Associate Professor of Voice and Chair of Voice at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Clark began her teaching career at the Crane School of Music in Potsdam, New York. A highly-regarded teacher and artist, Clark taught a generation of students, many of whom are now performing in leading opera houses and festivals all over the world. Blessed with a lustrous, beautiful voice and a keen intelligence, she was also a sought-after soprano soloist who enjoyed a distinguished performing career. She will be remembered as a gifted teacher and mentor, a compassionate and generous friend known by all for both her good humor, and her kind and loving nature.

A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Clark received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Arizona and a master’s and doctorate from CCM. She was a treasured aunt and sister, and is survived by her sisters Susan Clark Joul and Jill Meiburg, and her brother Robert Clark. In addition, she is survived by her beloved niece Ivy Brooke Joul, and nephews Henry, Sebastian, and Maxwell Meiburg. She is also survived by brothers-in-law Thomas Meiburg and Kent Joul, in addition to her many current and former students.

The CCM community sends its deepest condolences to Clark’s family and friends. Her impact on her family, students and colleagues remains immeasurable.

CCM Presents Annual Pianopalooza Concert on March 25

CCM’s Spring 2018 Piano Series presents Pianopalooza: Fast and Fabulous Fingers at 7 p.m. this Sunday, March 25 in Robert J. Warner Recital Hall. The annual showcase features performances by some of CCM’s most gifted student pianists.

CCM’s 150th Anniversary Celebration Continues with Moveable Feast Showcase and Blue-Note After Party on Friday, Jan. 19

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music commemorates 150 years of excellence in the performing and media arts when its Moveable Feast fundraising event returns on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018. Featuring a special guest appearance by alumnus Brian Newman (Jazz Studies, att. 1999-2003), this year’s anniversary-themed Feast also celebrates the contributions of two CCM supporters with unique ties to the college’s history: Tom Baur and Peter Landgren.

Hosted by CCMpower — a dedicated volunteer group comprised of fans, advocates and alumni — Moveable Feast gives guests a chance to sample artistic and culinary delights throughout CCM’s newly renovated facilities. The funds raised by the event enable CCMpower to “fuel the future of the arts” by awarding student scholarships and grants.

Attendees roam through the expansive CCM Village at their leisure, socializing and enjoying dinner-by-the-bite and cocktails provided by Jeff Thomas Catering while creating their own menu of artistic experiences. Guests plan their own schedule of 20-minute samplings of student and faculty entertainment, including Jazz, Choral, Musical Theatre, Piano, Opera, Acting, Dance and Orchestra performances, along with tours of CCM’s Electronic Media facilities, Lighting Design labs and other backstage areas.

New for 2018! In honor of CCM’s 150-year legacy of inspiring the stars of tomorrow, this year’s program also features a performance by alumnus Brian Newman, who will solo with the Jazz Orchestra as the “opening course” on Moveable Feast’s artistic menu. As an accomplished trumpeter and vocalist, Newman’s brand of jazz resurrects the magic of Old New York, refreshing the glamorous era with nuances of his own rock-‘n’-roll edge. Bandleader for Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, Newman will also cap off the evening at the new Blue-Note After Party. Featuring performances by Newman and a rotating cast of CCM alumni and students, this exclusive after party lasts from 10:30 p.m. until midnight, allowing attendees to dance the night away after the conclusion of Moveable Feast. CCM’s Ariel Quartet Dedicates Sept. 26 Concert in Memory of Walter Levin

The Ariel Quartet opens its 2017-18 four-part concert series at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2017, in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. The concert features works by Ludwig van Beethoven, György Kurtág and Robert Schumann.

CCM’s string quartet-in-residence dedicates its opening concert to CCM Professor Emeritus Walter Levin, who passed away on Aug. 4, 2017, at the age of 92. Levin was a founding member and first violinist of the LaSalle Quartet, which served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence for over 30 years.

During his tenure at CCM, Levin greatly enhanced CCM’s international reputation while inspiring generations of future artists and scholars, including members of the Ariel Quartet. Levin had mentored the Quartet for the past decade. The Quartet traveled the world to work with Levin in southern France, Berlin, Paris, Basel and Cincinnati.

The Ariel Quartet is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The group was formed in Israel in 1998 and has served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence since 2012.

$15M Infrastructure Project Renovates CCM Performance Venues

A $15 million renovation project will upgrade the overall technology of CCM performance venues to advance the working and learning experiences of students. Launched in spring 2016, the renovations have temporarily closed many of CCM’s theaters, but venues are scheduled to reopen for performances during the fall 2017 semester.

The renovation project will upgrade theater controls, stage rigging and lighting, as well as install new audio and video systems in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium, Patricia Corbett Theater, Cohen Family Studio Theater, Robert J. Werner Recital Hall and Watson Hall.

“This project ensures that CCM students are working with updated, professional-level theater technology,” Senior Director of Performance Operations Ray Dobson says. “A majority of patrons may not be able to discern a large part of the behind-the-scene renovations, but the upgrades directly impact and improve the day-to-day working and learning experiences of our students. Our audiences should be pleased with the updated seating and new energy-efficient L.E.D. house lights.”

Renovations will improve connectivity between all of CCM’s performance venues. Upgrades include the installation of new video monitoring systems, intercom systems and an inter-venue technical production communication system. The project also includes the installation of fiber optic cables that will make live streaming future CCM events possible.

New lighting and a new stage will be installed in Corbett Auditorium as part of the renovations, along with new carpet, seating and a new stage curtain. The seating in Patricia Corbett Theater will be refurbished, and a new carpet will be installed in the theater’s lobby. Patricia Corbett Theater will also have updated heating, ventilation and air conditioning. Watch the below video to see workers install the seats in Patricia Corbett Theater:

New seating will also be installed in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and Watson Hall. Additionally, Watson Hall will receive a new carpet and an acoustic sound panel.

The Robert J. Werner Recital Hall and Watson Hall have been reopened for CCM performances. Renovations to the Cohen Family Studio Theater are ongoing, but it has reopened for public events.

Patricia Corbett Theater has reopened for CCM performances. The venue’s first concert of the 2017-18 season featured the CCM Philharmonia on Sept. 8. On Sept. 12, the CCM Jazz Orchestra will play a tribute concert to the Rolling Stones in the refurbished venue.

Corbett Auditorium will reopen for CCM performances by December. Audiences will be able to experience the renovated venue at the annual Feast of Carols performances on Dec. 2 and 3.

CCM’s state-of-the-art facilities provide students with professional-level working and learning environments to prepare them for future careers. As the college enters its 150^th year, this renovation leads CCM into a new era as a top training center for the performing and media arts.

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) proudly presents the award-winning Ariel String Quartet in a four-part concert series, which commences on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and continues on Nov. 14, March 20 and April 26. Dubbed “rock stars of the classical scene,” by the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Ariel Quartet’s energetic performances and soulful interpretations have impressed concert goers throughout the world.

The Ariel Quartet is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The group was formed in Israel in 1998 and has served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence since 2012.

The members of the Ariel Quartet count themselves among the innumerable musicians influenced by Levin’s expertise. Prior to their residency at CCM, the members of the Ariel Quartet spent a formative year in Basel, Switzerland, studying with Levin. When the Ariel Quartet was named string quartet-in-residence at CCM in 2012, the appointment was seen as a natural extension of the LaSalle Quartet’s musical legacy. In the Chicago Sun-Times’ featured obituary, Gerchikov describes Levin as “incredibly influential, inspiring and demanding.” When Levin dispensed with a compliment, Gerchikov recalls, “You were in heaven.”

This season’s highlights also include collaborations with Donald Weilerstein, Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and CCM emeritus faculty member Allen Otte. The season also features the regional premiere of a new piece by John Harbison, co-commissioned by the Ariel Quartet with the generous support of Ann and Harry Santen. CCM Showcases the Music of Composer-in-Residence Tom Cipullo on April 12

CCM’s Guest Artist Series showcases the music of award-winning composer Tom Cipullo with a free concert performance on Wednesday, April 12, in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

Described by Opera News as “a shrewd dramaturge as well as a compelling composer,” Cipullo will spend three days in residence at CCM, coaching singers, pianists and instrumentalists from April 10-12, 2017.

Cipullo’s residency will culminate in a public performance featuring 26 of CCM’s stars-of-tomorrow. The concert’s program includes Cipullo’s Insomnia for vocal quartet and piano; The Husbands for soprano, baritone and piano; Late Summer for soprano and piano and the Entr’acte from Glory Denied for cello and piano, as well as other works. View full concert repertoire online here.

About Tom Cipullo
Hailed by the American Academy of Art and Letters for music of “inexhaustible imagination, wit, expressive range and originality,” composer Tom Cipullo is the winner of the 2016 Pellicciotti Opera Composition Prize from SUNY/Potsdam. He is also the recipient of a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship, the 2013 Sylvia Goldstein Award from Copland House and the 2013 Arts & Letters Award from the American Academy.

Cipullo has received commissions from dozens of performing ensembles and singers, and he has received fellowships and awards from Yaddo, the MacDowell Colony, the Liguria Study Center (Italy), the Fundacion Valparaiso (Spain) and the Oberpfaelzer Kuenstlerhaus (Bavaria).

The New York Times has called his music “intriguing and unconventional,” and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has called him “an expert in writing for the voice.” Cipullo’s music is published by Oxford University Press and Classical Vocal Reprints and recorded on the Naxos, Albany, CRI, PGM, MSR, GPR, Centaur and Capstone labels.

Cipullo has composed orchestral works, solo piano pieces and a vast quantity of vocal music, including over 200 songs and several vocal chamber works. His song cycle Of a Certain Age won the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Art Song Award in 2008. Cipullo’s first opera, Glory Denied, has enjoyed numerous productions, and the Fort Worth Opera recording on Albany Records was cited by Opera News as among the best of 2014. Reviewers have hailed the work as “terrifically powerful… superbly written” (Fanfare), praising its “luminous score (Washington Post),” and noting “the dramatic tension was relentless (Opera News).” Cipullo’s second opera, After Life (libretto by David Mason), has been called “a finely wrought exploration of the role of art in times of grave crisis (Washington Post)” and “unfailingly inventive (Opera News).” Recorded on the Naxos label, After Life is the winner of the 2017 the Domenick Argento Chamber Opera Composition prize from the National Opera Association.

Cipullo received his Master’s degree in composition from Boston University and his B.S. from Hofstra University, Phi Beta Kappa with highest honors in music.

CCM Holds Inaugural Andrew Howell Memorial Scholarship Competition

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music will hold the inaugural Andrew Howell Memorial Scholarship Competition 2 p.m., Sunday, March 26, 2017
 in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. The performance is a free event and open to the public.

CCM honors the memory of student Andrew Howell with a Memorial Scholarship Competition on Sunday, March 26, 2017.

This competition is held in loving memory of Andrew Howell, an extraordinary musician and an exceptional person who passed away during his undergraduate studies at CCM. A junior from Charlotte, N.C., Howell was a member of the CCM horn studio and a student of Randy Gardner.

Open to current undergraduate horn majors as well as applicants who have committed to attend CCM in 2017-18, the winner of the Andrew Howell Memorial Horn Scholarship Competition will receive a one-year $3,000 scholarship and a solo performance opportunity.

The scholarship will be offered annually to support the studies of an exceptional undergraduate horn student and perpetuate Andrew’s memory.

About Andrew Austin Howell

Andrew Howell (1990-2010) was beginning his third year as a horn performance major at CCM when he died in an outdoor accident on October 23, 2010 while admiring the bright night sky above the lights of the city below.

Andrew was a student of Randy Gardner, and a well loved member of the CCM community. He is remembered by his family, friends and classmates for his genuine encouragement of others, his love of animals, his charming and unassuming manner, and for his rare sense of humor. He had a musical soul, possessing a broad appreciation for the world and the people around him.

Born into a family of professional church musicians, Andrew was immersed in music from his earliest days, demonstrating a keen observation and attention to musical performances and shows. In addition to his skilled horn playing, he loved to sing and improvise on the piano. Whether he was painting, photographing, singing or playing, Andrew pursued an artful expression of what he saw as a beautiful world.

A participant in the Pensacola Children’s Chorus, the Charlotte Children’s Choir, the Charlotte Symphony Youth Orchestra and the music programs of his churches and schools, Andrew was happiest making music. He studied horn with Bob Blalock of the Charlotte Symphony and spent summers studying at the Brevard Music Center Summer Institute and Festival, the Tanglewood Horn Workshop, and the Chautauqua Music Festival with Richard Deane, Kristy Morrell, Jean Martin-Williams, Eric Ruske and Roger Kaza.

CCM Hosts Sphinx Virtuosi in Free Concert Oct. 24

The Sphinx Virtuosi chamber orchestra visits the UC College-Conservatory of Music to present Latin Voyages: Viajes Latinos, a free concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct 24 in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

The concert program takes the listener on a journey from the tantalizing Argentine tango to the nocturnal imagery of Mexico, a grand tribute to the great Astor Piazzolla, with a final invitation to a Catalan dance. Admission is free and open to the general public, ticket reservations are not required.

The Sphinx Virtuosi, led by the Catalyst Quartet, is comprised of the nation’s top Black and Latino classical soloists. These alumni of the internationally renowned Sphinx competition come together each fall as cultural ambassadors to reach new audiences.

While visiting Cincinnati, the Sphinx Virtuosi will make stops at local elementary, middle and high schools to talk with and perform for the students. The musicians will also participate in meet-and-greets with CCM students, faculty and staff members as well as host chamber music coaching sessions with CCM students.

The Sphinx Organization serves as the external evaluator of the CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship — a four-year pilot-program focused on promoting diversity in American orchestras. Members of the organization will attend presentations focused on CCM’s role in making the arts more inclusive.

The Sphinx Virtuosi invites you to explore the great palette of the string medium through the prism of celebrated composers of Latin heritage as well as those heard more seldom.  Celebrate the intricate mosaic of sounds at Latin Voyages: Viajes Latinos at 8 p.m. Monday, Oct 24 in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.
