CCM's Sesquicentennial Alumni Showcase is on April 21 in Corbett Auditorium.

CCM highlights alumni guest artists who will return to campus for the Sesquicentennial Alumni Showcase in a series of alumni spotlight stories.

Award-winning soprano Tamara Wilson (BM Voice, 2004) returns to CCM’s Corbett Auditorium to sing “Mild und leise” from Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde in the Sesquicentennial Alumni Showcase on April 21!

Hailed by the New York Times as “a young American who sings Verdi with a passion that surpasses stereotype,” Wilson is quickly gaining international recognition for her interpretations of Verdi, Mozart, Strauss and Wagner. She is the 2016 recipient of the prestigious Richard Tucker Award, an annual prize given by the Richard Tucker Music Foundation to a rising American opera singer on the “threshold of a major international career.” Other recent honors include a 2016 Olivier Award nomination and receipt of the Revelation Prize by the Argentine Musical Critics Association. Wilson is also a Grand Prize Winner of the annual Francisco Viñas Competition at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona.

Wilson began the 2017-18 season as the title role in Aida at the Washington National Opera in a production by Francesca Zambello. She returns to her home company of Houston Grand Opera for her role debut as Chrysothemis in Elektra and will make her Paris debut as Sieglinde in Die Walküre with the Mariinsky Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev at the Philharmonie de Paris. She makes her New York Philharmonic debut in Bernstein’s Symphony No. 3 (“Kaddish”) with Leonard Slatkin to celebrate Bernstein’s Philharmonic: A Centennial Festival and will also debut with the Boston Symphony in the same piece under Giancarlo Guerrero. At the BBC Proms, she will return for Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. She makes her Italian debut with Riccardo Chailly and the Teatro alla Scala Orchestra in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with performances in Pavia, Paris and Hamburg.

Wilson made her acclaimed Metropolitan Opera debut in Aida and London debut in Calixto Bieto’s new production of La forza del destino at the English National Opera, for which she received an Olivier Award nomination. She also inaugurated the new opera house in Kyoto, Japan with Seiji Ozawa as Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus. She was heard at Oper Frankfurt for her first performances as the Empress in Die Frau ohne Schatten conducted by Sebastian Weigle, the recording of which was just released by Oehms Classics. She recently debuted at the Bayerische Staatsoper and Opernhaus Zürich conducted by Fabio Luisi, both as Elisabetta di Valois in Don Carlo. She debuted at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as Amelia in Un ballo in maschera, triumphed in Act 3 of Die Walküre as Brünnhilde with Mark Wiggleworth and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales at Royal Albert Hall, and debuted with the Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev in Act 3 of Die Walküre as Sieglinde.

A noted interpreter of Verdi roles, she has been seen as Elisabeth de Valois in the five-act French Don Carlo (Houston Grand Opera), Amelia in Un ballo in maschera (Washington National Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Teatre Principal de Maó in Menorca), Elvira in Ernani (Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse), Elisabetta in Don Carlo (Bayerische Staatsoper, Zurich Oper and Oper Frankfurt), Lucrezia Contarini in I due Foscari (Théâtre du Capitole, Teatro Municipal de Santiago and Netherlands Radio Orchestra), Leonora in Il trovatore (Gran Teatre del Liceu, Houston Grand Opera and Théâtre du Capitole under Daniel Oren and Palma de Mallorca), Desdemona in Otello (Cincinnati Symphony and James Conlon), Alice Ford in Falstaff (Washington National Opera debut), Amelia Grimaldi in Simon Boccanegra (Canadian Opera Company), the title role in Aida (Opera Australia, Teatro de la Maestranza and Teatro Municipal de Santiago), Marchesa del Poggio in Un giorno di regno (Wolf Trap Opera) and Gulnara in Il corsaro (Washington Concert Opera). Other notable performances include her debut in Norma at Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, Rosalinde in Die Fledermaus at the Canadian Opera Company, her German debut at Oper Frankfurt in concert performances of Wagner’s early opera Die Feen as Ada under Sebastian Weigle, Elettra in Idomeneo under Harry Bicket at the Canadian Opera Company and under James Conlon at the Ravinia Festival and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni under James Conlon and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as with Edo de Waart and the Milwaukee Symphony.

On the concert stage, Wilson debuted with the Cleveland Orchestra in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under Franz Welser-Möst, the National Symphony in Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 (“Lobgesang”) with Matthew Halls and with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem conducted by Marin Alsop at the BBC Proms, which was recorded for commercial release. She has been heard in the Verdi Requiem with the Orchestra de Lyon under Leonard Slatkin, her Atlanta Symphony debut in Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony conducted by Robert Spano, Malaysian Philharmonic debut conducted by Mark Wigglesworth in Verdi and Wagner, and as soprano soloist for performances of Missa solemnis with John Nelson and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe (available on DVD). She made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Marin Alsop in Honegger’s Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher, as well as in Baltimore for Mahler’s Symphony No. 4, Verdi’s Requiem and Britten’s War Requiem. Wilson performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 with Marin Alsop and Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Osmo Vänskä and the Minnesota Orchestra, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with Donald Runnicles at the Grand Teton Music Festival, Mozart’s Requiem with Edo de Waart and the Milwaukee Symphony and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 (“Lobgesang”) with the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra. A favorite of the Oregon Bach Festival, she debuted in Verdi’s Messa da Requiem under Helmuth Rilling for the opening of its 40th Anniversary season, subsequently returning for the same piece in Rilling’s final season as music director. She has returned to sing Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 under Rilling, Marguerite in Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher under Marin Alsop, Tippett’s A Child of Our Time, a concert of Verdi, Britten and Wagner with Matthew Halls and Beethoven’s Ah, perfido. She added to her concert repertoire when she performed Wagner’s Wesendonck-Lieder with the Milwaukee Symphony conducted by Asher Fish.

An alumna of the Houston Grand Opera Studio, Wilson’s awards include the George London Award from the George London Foundation, as well as both a career grant in 2011 and study grant in 2008 from the Richard Tucker Music Foundation. Other notable awards include first place in the 2005 Eleanor McCollum Competition for Young Singers in Houston and finalist in the 2004 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. She was a featured soloist at the 2010 NEA Opera Honors, in which she sang “Ernani, involami” from Verdi’s Ernani to honor recipient Martina Arroy.

In addition to her operatic and orchestral performances, Wilson is an avid lecturer on vocal technique. She has been a guest master class lecturer for the National Pastoral Musicians in the Chicago area.

CCM’s Mainstage Series Presents the Fairy Tale Opera ‘Hansel and Gretel’ Nov. 20-23

CCM’s Mainstage Series proudly presents Engelbert Humperdinck’s timeless opera Hansel and Gretel from Nov. 20 – 23 in UC’s Corbett Auditorium. This magical production also features the Cincinnati Children’s Choir, ensemble-in-residence at CCM.

Based on the German fairy tale popularized by the Brothers Grimm, this contemporary production is conducted by CCM Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson with stage direction by the J. Ralph Corbett Distinguished Chair in Opera Robin Guarino. This opera will be sung in English with supertitles.

Composed by Humperdinck, with a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette, the perennially popular opera premiered in 1893 to instant success. Showing the influence of German folksong, along with harmonic and textural influences of Richard Wagner, the opera was hailed by fellow German composer Richard Strauss (who conducted the premiere) as “a masterpiece of the highest quality.” The opera has since become a holiday tradition throughout the world.

Guarino’s production transports the classic fairy tale to the 1930s Depression Era. The precocious brother and sister duo are poor, hungry and dreaming of tasty treats. When their overworked mother sends them into the world to find food, they lose their way in the forest and encounter a scary witch with a deliciously sinister plan.

Queen City Chamber Opera presents ‘Die Walküre.’

A number of current and former CCM students will be featured in Queen City Chamber Opera‘s upcoming production of act one of Richard Wagner’s Die Walküre.

Presented at the Dunham Arts Center on May 23 (the day after Wagner’s 201st birthday!) and 25, the fully staged production will last roughly 75 minutes.

CCM alumnus Isaac Selya (DMA, 2014) serves as Artistic Director of the Queen City Chamber Opera and will conduct these performances. Cincinnati Wagner Society President James Slouffman directs.

CCM alumnus and International Wagner Competition finalist Ric Furman sings the role of Siegmund, while CCM artist diploma candidate William Tvrdik sings the role of Hunding. Tvrdik recently sang the title role in CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Don Pasquale.

The role of Sieglinde will be sung by Kimberly Buczek, who is currently on the voice faculty of both Wright State University and Wittenberg University.

The production will be accompanied by a 40-piece orchestra, featuring many CCM students and alumni!

CCM Celebrates German Composer Richard Wagner at 200 With Special Event Series

CCM celebrates the 200th anniversary of composer Richard Wagner’s birth (May 22, 1813) with an unprecedented series of events this month. Beginning on Friday, Oct. 11, and running through Thursday, Oct. 24, CCM explores Wagner’s iconic work and enduring legacy with a series of guest lectures, film screenings and a concert performance by the CCM Philharmonia. Aside from the Oct. 12 Philharmonia performance, these events are free and open to the general public.

Richard Wagner was a 19th century German composer, theatre director, polemicist and conductor. He revolutionized opera through his concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk (“total work of art”), in which he combined the poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts. His Gesamtkunstwerkalso greatly influenced many filmmakers, as detailed in the book Wagner and Cinema, co-edited by Jeongwon Joe, Associate Professor of Musicology at CCM, and Sander L. Gilman, Distinguished Professor of Germanic Studies at Emory University. According to Wagner and Cinema, early 20th century film critic W. Stephen Bush once declared, “Every man or woman in charge of the music of a moving picture theatre is, consciously or unconsciously, a disciple or follower of Richard Wagner.”

CCM’s bicentenary celebration opens at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, with a guest lecture by Anthony Tommasini, Chief Classical Music Critic for the New York Times. Other highlights include the CCM Philharmonia’s Oct. 12 concert, “Wagner – Redemption Through Love,” which features selections from Wagner’s operas to be performed with the cinematic images from Tony Palmer’s biographical film about Wagner, starring Richard Burton. CCM will also welcome film director Tony Palmer to campus for a discussion on his films on Thursday, Oct. 24.

To celebrate this towering figure of German Romanticism and the indelible impression he made on the cinematic arts, CCM will also present a series of free film screenings exploring Wagner’s life and legacy.

CCM Fall 2013 Calendar of Major Events – October, November and December Updates

Please note the following corrections and updates to CCM’s schedule of major events for the fall:

  • CCM’s Verdi Intensive Conducting Workshop will present a FREE exhibition concert at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 6, in Corbett Auditorium. The performance will feature selections from Verdi’s La Traviata and Don Carlos in a concert setting. Maestro Mark Gibson and 12 aspiring conductors from all corners of the United States will lead CCM’s Philharmonia and Concert Orchestras during this unique performance. Featuring Christopher Bozeka, tenor; Summer Hassan, soprano; Joseph Lattanzi, baritone; and Xi Wang, soprano.
  • Michael Fiday’s Oct. 12 Faculty Artist Recital has been rescheduled for Jan. 29, 2014.
  • The CCM Philharmonia‘s celebration of Richard Wagner‘s bicentenary on Saturday, Oct. 12, will feature footage from the 1983 film Wagner, which includes some imagery intended for mature audiences. Viewer discretion is advised.
  • The 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13, screening of Tony Palmer’s film Wagner in UC’s MainStreet Cinema has been cancelled.
  • In honor of the 50th anniversaries of both Cincinnati Ballet and CCM Dance, the 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17, performance of the Fall Dance Concert will now feature a special appearance by dancers from Cincinnati Ballet! They will present excerpts from Val Caniparoli’s Caprice and from Cincinnati Ballet’s annual favorite The Nutcracker, along with excerpts from the company’s upcoming world premiere of the ballet King Arthur’s Camelot.
  • Due to overwhelming demand, CCM has added a 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, matinee performance to this years Feast of Carols holiday concert. CCM’s fabulous choirs and outstanding guest choirs will now perform at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on both Dec. 7 and Dec. 8.

CCM’s 2013-14 Concert Series opened in grand fashion this past Sunday with the American premiere of the uncut 1867 Paris Opera version of Giuseppe Verdi’s Don Carlos.

In her review for ConcertoNet: The Classical Music Network, Mary Ellyn Hutton called the performance “an amazing accomplishment” and remarked that “the voices were uniformly outstanding.”

In his review for Seen and Heard International, Rafael de Acha observed, “The CCM orchestra and choruses do top-notch work in this challenging and lengthy assignment, playing passionately and when needed providing grounding accompaniment for the singers.”

Our Concert Series continues this week with an “Anniversary” themed performance by the CCM Wind Orchestra on Friday, Sept. 27, and a CCM Jazz tribute to the Rolling Stones on Sunday, Sept. 29.

This Sunday, Sept. 22, is not only the first day of fall… it’s also the official beginning of CCM’s 2013-14 Concert Series!

CCM’s Orchestras, Choral Ensembles and special guests join forces to usher in the season in grand style with an epic concert production of Verdi’s Don Carlos on Sept. 22. Learn more about the two-part concert production of Don Carlos here.

Next Friday, Sept. 27, the Wind Orchestra celebrates the centenary of Morton Gould’s birth, the bicentenary of Richard Wagner’s birth and several other “musical milestone” anniversaries in a stylistically diverse concert performance. Learn more about “Anniversaries” here.

CCM’s Wind Orchestra Showcases Musical ‘Anniversaries’ During Sept. 27 Concert

The CCM Wind Orchestra opens its 2013-14 concert series with a program of musical “Anniversaries” at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27, in Corbett Auditorium.

The CCM Wind Orchestra, under the direction of Professor Glenn D. Price, is poised to deliver an evening of rich music featuring compositions by Schoenberg, Woolfenden, Gould, Wagner and Hindemith. Stylistically diverse, the pieces are tied together by shared anniversaries. For example, 2013 marks the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner’s birth, the 100th anniversary of Morton Gould’s birth and the 30th anniversary of Guy Woolfenden’s composition, Gallimaufry.

Most notably, the concert will showcase “Symphony in B-flat” by Paul Hindemith, a brilliant cornerstone of the wind repertoire written in 1951. In addition, graduate student Thanapol Setabrahmana guest conducts Gould’s “West Point Symphony,” a compelling patriotic piece and a tribute to the US military.

The audience will also hear Arnold Shoenberg’s majestic “Fanfare on Motifs from Die Gurrelieder,” which he composed for the Hollywood Bowl Concerts in 1945. The program is rounded out by Wooflenden’s well known Gallimaufry, inspired by Shakespeare’s Henry IV, and Wagner’s somber Trauermusik, written for the funeral of Carl Maria von Weber based on themes from Weber’s opera, Euryanthe.

In addition to the Wind Orchestra’s “Anniversaries” concert on Sept. 27, CCM will also celebrate both the bicentenary of Wagner and the centenary of Benjamin Britten with a series of concerts, opera productions, film screenings and guest lectures scheduled for October and November.
