CCM’s 2018-19 Concert Series Ticket Packages On Sale Now

Ticket packages are now on sale for the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s (CCM) 2018-19 Concert Series. From Sept. 11, 2018 through May 11, 2019, CCM’s students, faculty members and guest artists collaborate on an unprecedented lineup of Choral, Jazz, Orchestra, Percussion, Piano, Preparatory, String Quartet and Winds performances.

CCM’s Ariel Quartet Series Subscriptions and Concert Flex Packages are the best way to own every moment of the season ahead. For our most in-demand Prestige Events and Feast of Carols performances, subscribers can also pre-order tickets now to guarantee their seats! Concert single tickets go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.

CCM Alumnus Alex Gartner Appointed Artistic Director of Pensacola Children’s Chorus

CCM alumnus Alex Gartner.

CCM alumnus Alex Gartner (BM Music Education, 2012) has been named the new Artistic Director of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus (PCC) in Pensacola, Florida.

Gartner will take over for Allen and Susan Pote, who founded the organization in 1990 in conjunction with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

Gartner’s new appointment ends a long and fruitful partnership with both CCM and the Cincinnati Children’s Choir (CCC), which began in 2000 when he joined CCC as a young choir member and performed with them in their international choral festival, “Worldsong.” Later, during his undergraduate studies, he rejoined the CCC; starting as an accompanist and student intern, he later rose to become the Richard Wesp Assistant Conductor, a position he held until his recent hiring by the PCC.

“Alex has special gifts that uniquely meet the needs of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus,” said CCC Founder, Managing Artistic Director and Conductor Robyn Lana. “He has grown tremendously throughout his years with CCC. It is with great pride, as his mentor, to see him become Artistic Director of his own program. A bright future is in store for Alex and for the Pensacola Children’s Chorus.”

In addition to his work with the CCC, Gartner has been very active in the local music scene. As a choral director, he has served as the director of traditional music and worship at Epiphany United Methodist Church in Loveland, Ohio. He has also served as music director for numerous local theatre productions and founded the Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre, a summer theatre program based in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, that serves high school students in the Cincinnati metro area.

The Pensacola Children’s Chorus.

This theatre experience and his CCC experience will be merged in his new job in Pensacola. With over 300 students spread throughout seven different youth choirs, the PCC combines traditional children’s choir pedagogy and repertoire with the showmanship of musical theatre. The organization continues to collaborate regularly with the Pensacola Symphony and also works often with the Pensacola Opera and the University of West Florida.

CCM Spotlights Talented Young Performers and Acclaimed Guest Artists During Summer 2015 Performance Series

Young artists from all corners of the globe will make their way to Cincinnati this summer to work with CCM’s world-class faculty and renowned guest artists while in residence at the state-of-the-art CCM Village.

CCM offers a wide array of high caliber summer programs, and the general public can experience the artistry themselves during a series of nearly 40 public performances and guest artist recitals running Tuesday, June 2, through Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015.

A complete schedule of summer performances is listed below, with highlights including the Cincinnati World Piano Competition’s Finalists Concert featuring the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra on June 13, the Art of the Piano’s Recital Series (curated by CCM faculty member and Cincinnati World Piano Competition Artistic Director Awadagin Pratt) running June 14 – 28, the Classical Guitar Workshop’s Concert Series running July 12 – 18 and a semi-staged production of Georges Bizet’s Carmen on Aug. 8.

Curated by Awadagin Pratt, the Art of the Piano Guest Artist Series presents four-time Grammy winner Ursula Oppens in concert. Oppens performs with the world’s top orchestras and has premiered works by today’s leading composers including Ligeti, Carter and Corigliano, to name a few. This is a rare chance to hear Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, a work premiered by Oppens. Her recording on the Vanguard label of the piece was named Record of the Year by Record World and received a Grammy nomination.

Up to 12 young conductors, along with a carefully selected cast, were invited to participate in this one-of-a-kind “opera bootcamp” while in residence at CCM. Working with an internationally renowned faculty, led by Mark Gibson, Director of Orchestral Studies at CCM, these young artists have daily language instruction, text and style sessions and conducting and coaching master classes, and also participate in staging rehearsals, work with singers and lead orchestra rehearsals. The course culminates in a semi-staged performance, with orchestra, of Bizet’s beloved Carmen.

CCM Preparatory Presents Its Spring Series of Performances April 29 through May 17

CCM’s Preparatory Department (CCM Prep) kicks off its annual series of spring performances this week, highlighting students of all levels and their past year’s accomplishments.

The events begin at 8 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, April 29) with a performance by the beloved CCM Prep Brass Choir in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. With an eclectic program conducted by music director Paul Hillner, highlights include an arrangement of The Hymn of Acxiom by Vienna Teng and Megan Duplisea, a senior trumpet player from Mason High School. The Prep Brass Choir recently performed for students at the School for Creative and Performing Arts and at Mason High School.

CCM Prep’s Youth Ballet Companies present their annual spring concert on May 1 and 2 in the Patricia Corbett Theater. With direction by Jonnie Lynn Jacobs-Percer, the concert will feature a performance of Camille Saint-Saens’ Carnival of the Animals choreographed by CCM Prep faculty member Trisha Sundbeck Bell. This piece originally premiered with the Cincinnati Pops at the January 31 Lollipops Concert.

An exciting highlight of the series is CCM Prep’s Junior Musical Theatre Intensive Program’s performance of the award-winning musical Thoroughly Modern Millie, Jr. running May 7-9 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. This past January, CCM Prep musical theatre students earned an “Excellence in Dance” at the tenth annual iTheatrics Junior Theater Festival in Atlanta and CCM Prep faculty member Dee Anne Bryll received the Broadway Junior Spirit Award.

On Sunday, May 10 at 3 p.m. at the Muntz Theater on the UC Blue Ash campus, Cincinnati Junior Strings, the premiere ensemble for young string players in the region, performs a program featuring a variety of composers. Directed by Rachel Bierkan, Cincinnati Junior Strings performs before their east coast tour to Boston, Nova Scotia and other cities this summer.

CCM Prep hosts a full day of theatre arts and dance performances on Saturday, May 16, and then closes out its season at 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17 with the Jazz Extravaganza. This annual concert features over 70 jazz students performing and showcasing what they have learned throughout the year in the Patricia Corbett Theater.

CCM Prep is one of just a very few select programs that holds triple accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Music, Theater and Dance. This ensures that the faculty, curriculum and facilities have undergone a thorough review and meets the high national standards for community schools and programs. A variety of locations, highly qualified staff and a complete range of programs makes CCM Prep a great choice for your arts experience. The Cincinnati Children’s Choir Premieres the Winner of its 2015 Competition for Emerging Composers During Annual Spring Concert on May 3

Celebrate “Angelic Spring” with the Cincinnati Children’s Choir on May 3, 2015.

CCM presents the Cincinnati Children’s Choir’s annual spring concert, “Angelic Spring,” at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, in Corbett Auditorium. A CCM ensemble-in-residence, the Cincinnati Children’s Choir is directed by Robyn Lana.

Highlights of “Angelic Spring” include Ban Ban Caliban, a choral setting of Shakespearean text composed by Dan Forrest. Performed by the Cincinnati Children’s Choir Bel Canto Choir, the piece is a quirky, fun, octatonic setting for treble choir, piano and percussion including cabasa, ratchet, vibraslap and police whistle. The performance of this piece coincides with the CCM Department of Choral Studies’ ongoing Shakespeare Quadricentennial celebration.

The Bel Canto Choir will also premiere the winner of its national competition for emerging composers. This year’s winner is Kevin Padworski from Denver with his pieceVidi Aquam.

In addition to the Bel Canto Choir, the Con Brio, Vivace and Allegro and Piccolo Coro Choirs, as well as the Cincinnati Girl Choir and Cincinnati Young Men’s Choir will be performing music from around the globe, singing of travel, hope and love. The concert will feature many alumni of the Cincinnati Children’s Choir, along with this year’s graduating seniors.

“Angelic Spring” is the start of a very busy season for the members of the Cincinnati Children’s Choir. Later on this summer, the ensemble will travel to Vatican City to perform in a mass at St. Peter’s Basilica. The Cincinnati Children’s Choir has also been asked to represent the USA at the World Expo in Milan, performing under the American flag. The annual Expo gathers countries from around the world to state their thoughts on a chosen theme. This year’s theme is “Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life.”

The Cincinnati Children’s Choir travels often, although international performances generally happen only once every three years. Since the ensemble had traveled to Beijing in 2014 for the International Children’s Choir Festival, this latest international opportunity was an unexpected honor!

Director Robyn Lana explains, “Participation in the program fosters joyful fulfillment, a sense of achievement, increased independence, confidence and leadership qualities in our choristers.”

CCM Welcomes John Martin as Assistant Dean of Preparatory and Community Engagement

CCM Dean Peter Landgren has announced the appointment of John William Martin to the position of Assistant Dean of Preparatory and Community Engagement at CCM. Martin comes to CCM shortly after finishing his tenure as Executive Director of the Brookline Music School, a preparatory-style, community arts education institution in Brookline, Massachusetts.

In addition to Brookline, he has built a long career as a music administrator dating back to the 1980s: director of admissions and founding director of the Community Music School at Michigan State University; coordinator of music services, director of the Celebrity Artists Series and instructor in the Music Administration program at the University of Alabama; director of the Wausau Conservatory of Music in Wisconsin; and arts coordinator for the Jefferson County School system in Florida.

As a flutist, Martin’s performing career has also been impressive. He served as principal flutist of the Wausau (WI) Symphony Chamber Orchestra and associate principal flutist with the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra. He has also had several engagements as a teacher: flute instructor for the University of Wisconsin-Marathon Center, visiting lecturer for the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and an artist-in-residence for the state arts councils of Florida, Wisconsin and Alabama.

Martin is currently a board member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education and has served as chairperson of the Guild’s Central Great Lakes Chapter, as well a member of the Council of School Directors and the membership committee. He has served as a consultant to numerous community and university arts programs throughout the country and has been a participant in the National Guild’s Management Assessment Training Program.

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, John William Martin received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Montevallo (AL). He then earned a master of music degree in flute performance from Florida State University, where he studied under Charles DeLaney.

Martin’s other interests have included collaborations as both performer and composer with numerous dance companies including Happendance (Michigan’s oldest, continuing professional company), Children’s Dance Touring Theatre of Florida and dancers from the Martha Graham Company. He served as an officer on the board of directors and production manager of the Children’s Ballet Theatre of Michigan, 2003-09.

Martin’s appointment reflects CCM’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its already innovative educational and community outreach programs. Martin officially joins CCM on Monday, April 13, 2015. Please join us in welcoming him to the CCM family!
