TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student Works Returns to CCM March 11-13

CCM presents six original, student-created works in the Acting Department’s TRANSMIGRATION Festival: (im)mature, Rotten Kids of Witchwood Pine, Phantasmagoria, Dirty Laundry, Entermission and HINT! A Play About Clue. Celebrating its 12th anniversary, the festival runs Wednesday, March 11, through Friday, March 13, 2020, throughout CCM Village.

TRANSMIGRATION gives CCM Acting students the freedom to produce an entirely new show from start to finish. The teams are tasked with writing, designing and producing a 30-minute piece of theatre all on their own. The shows are performed simultaneously and in non-traditional spaces throughout CCM’s Corbett Center for the Performing Arts. Attendees may customize their personal theater-going experience by viewing up to four shows of their choice throughout the evening. Show details are below.

“This is my third year in TRANSMIGRATION, and it has always been a highlight of my year. It’s always so fun and really works the muscle we need to create our own work,” said CCM Acting student Sydney Miles. “My personal favorite year and favorite role was my freshman year when I played a suitcase and travelled along with my pal, Cooper the Compass. With TRANSMIGRATION, anything can happen!”

Co-produced by CCM Acting Professors Richard Hess and Brant Russell, this unique festival has presented more than 60 original productions over the past 12 years. This year, junior Anastasia Jacques is the Associate Producer, and senior Chandler Bates is the Communication Manager.

(IM)MATURE
Remember grade school? The science fair. Getting picked last for kickball. Missing the bus. Cliques. Falling outs. Falling in love. Do you remember how you dealt with them? Did you shut down or grow up? What advice would you give your childhood self? The bus is almost here, hop on as we take a trip down memory lane and remember what it was like to discover new truths, redefine our obstacles and find out what maturity even means. As kids, all we want is to grow up. But as adults, all we want is to remember.

ROTTEN KIDS OF WITCHWOOD PINE
As a group of students retreat to the woods, they stumble into a cursed forest called Witchwood Pine, a forest that manipulates your mind and traps you inside it. As they realize where they are and what the pine can do, they must discover what it takes to escape. Can you trust what you see?

DIRTY LAUNDRY
There are some places that normal humans do not go. One of those is a laundromat at 4 a.m. on a Tuesday. Come visit our 24-hour laundromat, where career criminals go to wash away their dirty secrets. Tuesday after Tuesday, week after week, they’ve become an eclectic sort of clan. Aside from being loyal patrons, they all work as mercenaries for the owner. One day, when given assignments, some of the names on their lists look a little too familiar. What happens when the thing that goes “bump” in the night gets scared? Will this family of shady characters choose blood over money, or will they succumb to their fears? Step inside our laundromat, where you call some of the shots, but you may leave less clean than you came in.

First Look: CCMONSTAGE ‘Clybourne Park’

CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents Bruce Norris’ provocative comedy inspired by Lorraine Hansberry’s “A Raisin in the Sun” through Feb. 16, 2020. Tickets are on sale now.

Bruce Norris’ award-winning play, Clybourne Park continues at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music tonight, Feb. 14, through Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020, as part of the CCMONSTAGE Play Series. Acting Professor Richard Hess, director of the production, recently discussed how he and students have prepared for the play with Cincinnati arts reporter Rick Pender on WVXU’s “Around Cincinnati” program.

“When choosing titles at CCM I try to pick exciting pieces that have something to say about the world today, and Clybourne Park might be yelling more loudly in 2020 than even when it was first written,” Hess says in the interview. Listen to the full interview on WVXU.

Now in its 10th anniversary year, Clybourne Park examines how Americans talk — or don’t talk — about race, class and real estate. It was written by Norris as a modernized response to Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun, focusing on the home Hansberry’s protagonists were set to move into at the end of her seminal drama. Clybourne Park begins in 1959, as a grieving white family prepares to sell their home to an African-American family, causing anxiety in their middle-class Chicago neighborhood.

The second act takes place 50 years later, as a white family purchases the same home in the now predominantly African-American neighborhood, and makes plans to raze and rebuild the dwelling. Tensions rise in each act as the characters debate over the past, present and future of the home. This production contains strong language.

The 2019-20 CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents Clybourne Park through Feb. 16, 2020, at Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office; student discounts are available.

CCM Acting Presents New Play ‘Association of Controlled Dreamers’

CCM concludes its 2018-19 Studio Series with MJ Kaufman’s Association of Controlled Dreamers on April 25-27, 2019, in Cohen Family Studio Theater.

In the play, a young, charismatic senator pursues policies that could have long-lasting repercussions for public education. A group of college students tries every technique available to them to change his mind, from occupying his lawn to collective lucid dreaming.

“The play is about students fighting for affordable education,” says Brant Russell, the show’s director. “The play also resonates with our current political and educational circumstances in that many college students feel as though they have little power over the institutions that rule their worlds. If students wish to be heard, they sometimes have to resort to less traditional means of communication.”

CCM commissioned Kaufman, who is a staff writer on Netflix’s The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, to write Association of Controlled Dreamers for the college’s summer Playwrights Workshop in 2017. Students presented a reading of the play as part of the workshop, but now audiences can see the fully-staged version.

While the subject matter addresses serious and modern societal concerns, Russell notes that the production doesn’t lose its humor. “The play is funny (really funny), moving, and relies on what’s best about CCM: students collaborating to create something greater than the sum of its parts.”

Performances of Association of Controlled Dreamers take place April 25-27, 2019, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater.

CCM Video: Teaser Trailer for ‘Our Country’s Good’

CCM’s Mainstage Acting production of Our Country’s Good opens with a preview performance at 8 p.m. tonight, Feb. 13, and continues through Sunday, Feb. 17, 2019 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets available through the CCM Box Office.

Directed by Susan Felder, the award-winning play centers on a group of 18th-century criminals and British colonialists who explore how theatre can help rehabilitate and inspire. A British Royal Marine lieutenant decides to put on a play to celebrate the king’s birthday. He casts the play with English convicts who populate a distant Australian prison camp to remind them that “there is more to life than crime and punishment.” Few of them can read, let alone act, and the play is produced against a background of food shortages and barbaric prison punishments. CCM’s production is for mature audiences.

CCM’s 2018-19 Studio Series Presents Sarah Ruhl’s ‘Eurydice’

This play re-imagines the classic myth of Orpheus through the eyes of its heroine. Admission is free but reservations are required.

CCM kicks off its 2018-19 Studio Series with Sarah Ruhl’s retelling of Eurydice on October 11-13. Dying too young on her wedding day, Eurydice must journey to the underworld, where she reunites with her father and struggles to remember her lost love. With contemporary characters, ingenious plot twists and breathtaking poetry, the play is a fresh look at a timeless love story.

Susan Felder, CCM professor of acting and movement, directs the production. In her director’s note, Felder explores the theme of grief in Eurydice:

“The play is adapted from a myth by the Greeks, who believed that after we die, we travel through a river that washes and rids us of burdensome memories of life and loss. CCM Acting Students Devise New Work for International Fringe Festival

H2O: A Play about Water will debut in Cincinnati on April 19, 2018, as part of CCM Acting’s Studio Series. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, April 16 through the CCM Box Office. 

CCM students have devised a new work to be presented this summer at Scotland’s Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. Before the production travels overseas, H2O: A Play about Water will premiere in Cincinnati as the final installment of CCM’s 2017-18 Studio Series on April 19-21 in Cohen Family Studio Theater.

The play is an original 60-minute piece of theatre that was created by 30 students from the Acting, Musical Theatre and Technical Production Departments at CCM. Admission to the CCM performances is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, April 16 through the CCM Box Office.

CCM Acting Department Chair Richard Hess conceived the show and directed the students as they crafted the new work. The play is a theatrical collage of scenes that explore the abundance, scarcity and restorative powers of water.

“Water is life,” Hess says. “Seventy-one percent of our planet is water. Oceans rise. Droughts kill. Water soothes and water heals. H2O is an epic theatrical journey. Are you thirsty? Come have a drink of H2O.”

Faculty and students will travel to Scotland to present H2O: A Play about Water in four performances at the 71^st Edinburgh International Fringe Festival on August 4-8, 2018. This is the first time CCM Acting students have presented an original work in the most prestigious Fringe Festival in the world.

“Some dreams can last 37 years, and when they come true, they are more vivid and more magical than expected,” says Hess about this opportunity. “In 1981 when I was a junior in college, I traveled to Scotland for a study abroad experience and stayed for the year studying drama and English at the University of Glasgow. I have dreamed of taking a show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival since I first set foot in Scotland 37 years ago. Taking 30 CCM students to Scotland is a dream come true.”

Time is running out to apply for the CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship! The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra are accepting applications for the next class of CSO/CCM Diversity Fellows through Tuesday, Dec. 1, 2016!

Funded by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, this one-of-a-kind program provides an unparalleled learning experience for violin, viola, violoncello and double bass players coming from populations that are historically underrepresented in classical music. The inaugural class of fellows are halfway through their first year in the program; read more about them in this UC Magazine feature story.

Fellows receive full tuition scholarship support while earning a Master of Music or Artist Diploma degree at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

Each fellow receives compensation of $8,000 per season while performing with the CSO.

CCM’s Studio Series Continues Oct. 20-22: Welcome to ‘Middletown’

In the next installment of UC College-Conservatory of Music’s 2016-17 Studio Series, the Acting Department introduces audiences to the residents of a small town as they search for life’s meaning. Directed by CCM Acting Professor and Department Chair Richard Hess, Will Eno’s Middletown runs Thursday, Oct. 20- Saturday, Oct. 22 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater.

Middletown, which won the 2010 Horton Foote Prize for Promising New American Play, was praised by the New York Times for its “tart, funny, gorgeous little comments on the big things: the need for love and forgiveness, the search for meaning in life, the long lonely ache of disappointment.”

Will Eno veers toward the avant-garde with his approach to stark realism in Middletown. His influences include playwrights Samuel Beckett and Don DeLillo, and the recently deceased Edward Albee was a mentor to him. The play was inspired by Thorton Wilder’s Our Town, which was last seen on CCM’s Mainstage in April 2011.

One of the central characters in Our Town is the local milkman, while Middletown gives the spotlight to the town’s celebrity, an astronaut in orbit around Earth. Both plays concern the passing seasons of life and are unapologetically frank and sentimental, according to Hess.

“Middletown is about nothing except life and death and everything in between,” Hess says. “With a wry and unexpectedly profound touch, Will Eno has written one of the wisest plays I have ever worked on. Its simplicity is monumental.”

The show will be presented in thrust theater configuration, with set design by CCM student Theron Wineinger. Audience members will be seated close to the action of the play in this intimate setting.

“Middletown might make the audience both laugh and cry,” Hess says. “It will hit home for everyone in a deeply personal way. Its wisdom is universal, and, in our crazy world, human to human contact that is sane, rational and open might be a welcome tonic.”
