CCM Jazz Studies Alumni Accept Faculty Positions in Tennessee and Texas

Two CCM alumni have accepted faculty positions at major universities; Michael Schults (MM Jazz Studies, 2012) is now an Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Memphis, and Thomas Zinninger (MM Jazz Studies, 2009; DMA Saxophone, 2013) is an Assistant Professor of Saxophone and Jazz at Texas A&M University–Kingsville.

For the past four years, Schults has been an Assistant Professor of Saxophone at the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire. During his time as a graduate student at CCM, he taught improvisation and coached jazz combos and bands. He studied with James Bunte, Rick VanMatre, Phil DeGreg and Kim Pensyl.

Shults was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. He has performed by invitation as a featured soloist at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference, the Jazz Education Network conference, the Wisconsin Music Educator’s Association conference and the Minnesota Music Educator’s Association conference.  He is a founding faculty member of the Kansas City Saxophone Workshop, along with Zach Shemon, alto saxophonist of the PRISM Quartet. Shults has also served on the faculty of the Eugene Rousseau Saxophone Workshop at Shell Lake Arts Center. He is currently the alto saxophone chair in the Coalescent Quartet.

Zinninger moves to Texas A&M-Kingsville from Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, where he taught saxophone and led the jazz ensemble. He was both a graduate student and a faculty member while he was at CCM, where he taught courses in jazz improvisation and jazz appreciation.

His performance credits include the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Frank Simon Band, Chamber Winds of Louisville, Cincinnati Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, RL Big Band and the Don Krekel Orchestra. As a soloist, he premiered new arrangements for saxophone at the 16th World Saxophone Congress in St. Andrews, Scotland as well as the 2012, 2014 and 2017 North American Saxophone Alliance Conferences.

CCM Spring 2015 Calendar of Major Events – April Updates

Please note the following updates to CCM’s schedule of major events for the spring:

• The Pangea Chamber Players guest artist concert originally scheduled for April 2 has been cancelled.
• The April 12 performance of Chuck Owen’s River Runs features the CCM Concert Orchestra, not the CCM Philharmonia.
• The venue has changed for CCM’s April 19 performance of Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice. The concert will now take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208
• The faculty artist concert entitled “The Original Phil DeGreg and Friends” has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. This celebration of the career of retiring faculty member Phil DeGreg will take place in Patricia Corbett Theater. The performance is free and open to the general public. You can listen to Professor DeGreg preview his concert, which was originally scheduled for Feb. 17, courtesy of WVXU 91.7 FM.
• CCM welcomes composer Mark Applebaum for a guest artist performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 in Watson the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. This performance is free and open to the general public.
• CCM’s Division of Electronic Media will host its Senior Showcase at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 in Watson Hall. Admission to the event is free and open to the general public.

CCM’s Jazz Ensembles Present the Music of Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Chuck Owen and More This Spring

CCM’s Jazz Ensembles will celebrate the greats of both classic and contemporary jazz in a remarkable series of concerts this spring.

Under the musical direction of Professors Scott Belck and Craig Bailey, CCM’s big bands will also welcome a wide variety of guest artists to the stage. Tickets for all performances are on sale now.

The Spring Jazz Series opens on Sunday, Jan. 25, with a concert highlighting the works of contemporary jazz composers including nine-time GRAMMY Award-nominee Jim McNeely and three-time GRAMMY Award-winner Maria Schneider. The concert will also showcase new compositions by students in CCM’s Department of Jazz Studies.

On Sunday, Feb. 15, CCM Jazz will celebrate the music of Ray Charles with “Jazz + Genius = Soul.” The tribute concert takes its name from a legendary 1961 album by Charles, which features big band arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Guest vocalist Billy Osborne and new CCM Jazz Professor Craig Bailey, who spent nearly 20 years as lead alto saxophonist in Ray Charles’ band, will help take audiences back to the days of the great Ray Charles Orchestra.

Other highlights include a concert dedicated to frequent collaborators Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on Sunday, March 8, featuring guest artist and lecturer Todd Stoll. A CCM alumnus, Stoll (MM Trumpet, 1991) currently serves as Vice President of Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

On Sunday, April 12, CCM’s Jazz Ensembles and Philharmonia Orchestra join forces for a special performance of Chuck Owen’s River Runs, a concerto for jazz guitar, saxophone and orchestra. Faculty emeritus and saxophonist Rick VanMatre makes his return to the CCM stage for this performance, which acclaimed jazz bassist Rufus Reid has called “a tour de force.” Mark Gibson and Scott Belck conduct.

In addition, CCM’s illustrious jazz faculty will present a pair of free concerts this spring. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, CCM’s Faculty Jazztet will perform in the stunning Robert J. Werner Recital Hall, with a lineup including Craig Bailey, James Bunte, Rick VanMatre, Scott Belck, Marc Fields, Rusty Burge, James. E Smith, Phil DeGreg, Aaron Jacobs, Art Gore and John Von Ohlen.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, CCM celebrates the career of Jazz Studies professor Phil DeGreg with a concert of music composed by DeGreg! He will be joined by other faculty artists, including Rick VanMatre, Rusty Burge, Kim Pensyl, Scott Belck, Marc Fields, Craig Bailey and more for this very special event.

CCM’s acclaimed faculty artists receive the spotlight in a series of free public performances this semester.

CCM’s Spring Faculty Artist Series begins with Pat Linhart and Julie Spangler’s annual cabaret concert on Sunday, Jan. 18, and concludes with a performance by Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology Tsun-Hui Hung, showcasing the erhu (Chinese fiddle) on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Each concert in this series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by world-class artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM Announces Spring 2015 Calendar of Major Events

This spring, CCM proudly presents over 125 major public performances from Jan. 18 through May 17, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported drama, musical theatre and opera productions!

Highlights of CCM’s spring concert series include the return of Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 23; a CCM Jazz tribute to the music of Ray Charles on Feb. 15; a double-bill performance of Berlioz’s Te Deum and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring by the CCM Philharmonia, Chamber Choir, Chorale and Cincinnati Children’s Choir on March 13; a star-studded Bearcat Piano Festival running March 23 – April 4; and a Spring Dance Concert featuring accompaniment by the CCM Chamber Choir, student percussionists, faculty artist James Tocco and student pianists running April 23 – 25.

The internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet will also continue its 2014-15 concert series at CCM with performances on Jan. 27 and March 31. Recently hailed by The Strad for its “vitality, clarity of line, depth of sound and… impeccable sense of direction,” CCM’s string quartet-in-residence will perform works by Brahms, Bartók, Schubert, Stravinsky and more this spring.

CCM’s Mainstage Series will also resume in early 2015 with a production of Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama The Heidi Chronicles, running Feb. 11 – 15; a highflying trip to Neverland with Peter Pan: The Musical running March 5 – 8; and a production of Mozart’s magnificent opera Così Fan Tutte, running April 9 – 12.

Groundbreaking Mexican composer Daniel Catán, creator of the operas Il Postino and Florencia en el Amazonas, began an adaptation of the 1941 Frank Capra film Meet John Doe, but it remained unfinished at his untimely death in 2011. Opera Fusion: New Works welcomes a creative team tasked with the completion of the work: Eduardo Diazmuñoz, Michaela Eremiášová, Jairo Duarte-López, and the composer’s widow, Andrea Puente Catán. Following a 10-day residency, the workshop will culminate in a public performance of excerpts of the new opera. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story in 1942, Meet John Doe tells the story of Ann Mitchell, a newspaper columnist who unwittingly sparks a grassroots populist movement with a fictional letter to the editor from “John Doe” protesting society’s ills, and John Willoughby, a homeless former baseball player whom she hires to pose as the public face of John Doe.

In Goethe’s Triumph der Empfindsamkeit (1777), sensibility, feeling and sympathy are brutally exposed as trivial obsessions with postures and props. Excess, bad taste and poor behaviour are the focus of Goethe’s hilarious critique of the craze unleashed by his own Sorrows of Young Werther. Embodied in this strange and funny text is satire aimed not only at the cult of Empfindsamkeit and at the works of the artist himself, but also at the conspicuous blurring of public and private spheres, the untoward exposure of personal proclivities and private feeling. Given the ubiquitous text-book designation of C. P. E. Bach as the architect of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ in music, Dr. Annette Richards takes another look at what ‘Empfindsamkeit’ might mean, especially for the composer’s late keyboard works. By examining this music (along with then-contemporary views on humor, satire and other cultural elements), the audience may have to reconsider Bach’s own claims about the competing aesthetics of public and private music.

A student of such legendary musicians as Gornostayeva, Naumov, Pletnev and Vlasenko at the Moscow Conservatory, Babayan won consecutive first prizes in several major international competitions, including the Casadesus and Hammamatsu. Since that time, he has appeared in recital internationally in the most important venues, and with the world’s best orchestras. Additionally Babayan is a frequent two piano collaborator with Martha Argerich.

CCM Alumnus Michael Shults Joins the Faculty of University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire

CCM alumnus Michael Shults.

We are happy to report that CCM alumnus Michael Shults (MM Jazz Studies, 2012) recently accepted a tenure track position as assistant professor of saxophone at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He teaches applied jazz and classical saxophone, coaches saxophone quartets and jazz combos, and teaches jazz improvisation.

Shults served as a graduate assistant in the Department of Jazz Studies during his time at CCM, teaching improvisation and coaching combos and big bands. He studied saxophone with James Bunte and Rick VanMatre, improvisation with Phil DeGreg and composition with Kim Pensyl.

Shults has been praised for his “strong, imaginative” improvisations (Downbeat Magazine) and “fresh and intelligent musical ideas” (The Pitch). As a jazz saxophonist, he was a finalist in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance Jazz Artist Competition, and was the winner of the Graduate College Soloist category in the 2012 Downbeat Magazine Student Music Awards Issue. He was a featured soloist on Bobby Watson’s 2010 release The Gates BBQ Suite which reached as high as #4 on the Jazzweek National Radio Airplay Charts. Also adept as a concert saxophonist, Shults has been praised for his “jaw-dropping” and “authoritative” technique (Bill Brownlee of the Kansas City Star) and has performed by invitation at the North American Saxophone Alliance biennial conference and the University of Iowa Festival for New Music.

He is currently a DMA candidate at the the University of Missouri-Kansas City under the tutelage of Zach Shemon of the PRISM Quartet. Before coming to CCM for his graduate studies, Shults earned dual BM degrees in Saxophone Performance and Jazz and Studio Music from the UMKC where he studied with noted saxophonists Bobby Watson, Tim Timmons and Dan Thomas.

CCM’s Fall Jazz Series Honors Legendary Musicians Buddy Rich, Charles Mingus and Stan Kenton

CCM’s Department of Jazz Studies highlights a collection of the genre’s most famed royalty this fall.

CCM Jazz Ensembles kick off the season with a tribute to legendary drummer Buddy Rich on Sunday, Sept. 28. “Burning for Buddy” will highlight the talents of CCM senior drummer David Albanese. CCM Professor and Director of Jazz Studies Scott Belck explains, “This is a high energy, traditional jazz piece that has never been featured at CCM.”

On Sunday, Oct. 12, the Jazz Ensembles pay tribute to the life and style of virtuoso bass player, pianist, bandleader and composer Charles Mingus. Belck and first-year faculty member Craig Bailey lead CCM’s big bands in a musical journey back to the 1960s when protest, freedom and risk-taking reverberated through Mingus’ music.

Cincinnati’s very own John Von Ohlen joins the Jazz Ensemble in a highly anticipated tribute to the Stan Kenton Orchestra on Sunday, Nov. 2. Von Ohlen was Kenton’s drummer in the early 70s before joining the Blue Wisp Big Band. Tickets will not last long for this audience favorite, so contact the CCM Box Office today!

This spectacular season of iconic jazz artists also features several free events, including the CCM Faculty Jazztet’s celebration of the legendary “Birth of the Cool” recording sessions with Miles Davis and Gil Evans; a guest artist concert exploring “The Art of the Jazz Duo” with saxophonist Andrew Bishop and pianist Ellen Rowe; and the Annual Holiday Concert, which promises to swing everyone into the season with a special appearance by the Grinch!
