CCM Student Marie Bucoy-Calavan Named As Inaugural May Festival Choral Conducting Fellow

Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been named the inaugural recipient of the May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship. She will enter her third year of studies in CCM's DMA in Choral Conducting program this fall.

Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been named the inaugural recipient of the May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship. She will enter her third year of studies in CCM’s DMA in Choral Conducting program this fall.

We are delighted to report that DMA candidate Marie Bucoy-Calavan has been named the inaugural recipient of the May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship. This new position was established thanks to the incredible foresight and generosity of Ginger Warner and was created as part of an ongoing collaboration between the May Festival and CCM’s Department of Choral Studies. Each year, a May Festival Fellow will be selected from CCM’s pool of Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Conducting students and will serve as the Assistant Conductor of the May Festival Chorus.

“The new May Festival Choral Conducting Fellowship provides unique professional training for CCM’s doctoral choral conducting students,” explains Director of Choral Studies Earl Rivers, “providing them opportunities to conduct rehearsals, as well as to attend May Festival Board and Artistic Planning meetings to learn how a world-renowned Choral Festival is successfully produced.”

Bucoy-Calavan will begin her duties with the May Festival Chorus next fall. As Assistant Director she will be responsible for running select rehearsals and smaller sectional rehearsals. In addition Bucoy-Calavan will conduct some concerts within the community. Commenting on her appointment, Bucoy-Calavan says, “I am very excited and honored at the chance to have a mentorship with [May Festival Director of Choruses] Robert Porco. I attended the Conducting Masterclass that the May Festival held a year ago, and was inspired by his musical insights and skill for teaching conducting. I look forward to the fall and to the prospect of working with the May Festival Chorus.”

In Memoriam: Arts Patron Louise Dieterle Nippert

Our condolences go out to the entire Nippert family as we learn of the passing of Louise Dieterle Nippert, loyal arts patron and proud UC alumna. The Cincinnati Enquirer reports on her passing and her legacy here.

“Acts of kindness are marked by selfless gestures that transform the lives of others. Louise Nippert’s selflessness was exhibited time after time at her alma mater, the University of Cincinnati.

For the College-Conservatory of Music, her support provided scores of vocal students with scholarships. She also contributed to the creation of CCM Village through her naming support of the Dieterle Vocal Arts Center.

The Nipperts also provided three endowed chairs to the university: The Nippert Chair of Law, The Dieterle Chair of Music named for Mrs. Nippert’s parents and the Thomas James Kelly Chair held by me as the Dean of CCM. Adjacent to the College-Conservatory of Music is another legacy left by the family, Nippert Stadium.

These selfless gestures will forever transform the lives of all of us who knew Mrs. Nippert and have been touched by her kindness and generosity.

We will miss her presence at performances and other events on our campus.” – Peter Landgren, Dean and Thomas James Kelly Professor of Music at CCM.

Professor Emeritus Elmer Thomas

The Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand has penned a moving remembrance of Elmer Robert Thomas, professor emeritus and founder of the department of Choral Studies at CCM. You can view her story here.

Professor Thomas died of respiratory failure on June 13 at University Hospital. He was 81.

“He often spoke of the joy of living his life surrounded by the great music of great composers, and he frequently reminded his students that in their careers they would always find joy, and solace, as needed, in great musical works,” said Earl Rivers, CCM director of choral studies. “Elmer remained my mentor throughout our relationship. He was the first person whose insight and opinions I sought when studying, preparing, and executing masterworks for chorus and chorus and orchestra.”

We would like to express our sincerest condolences to all of the members of the Thomas family.
