CCM Now Accepting Applications For Three-Summer Master’s In Music Education Program

UC’s nationally ranked and internationally renowned College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is now accepting applications for its new Master of Music in Music Education. The degree program is specifically designed for music teachers who want to remain active in the classroom while continuing their education. The practical degree program can be completed in three summers and provides a high-quality, individualized curriculum for all music teachers.

Students have the opportunity to refresh their piano skills, study conducting, or advance their performance techniques through applied study.

The program also features enrichment opportunities unique to the summer curriculum, including Orff-Schulwerk or Kodály certifications for music teachers and study-abroad experiences.

Each summer course load consists of a five-week term with schedules that provide free time in the afternoon to study, practice and maintain personal or professional commitments.

Register now for CCM Prep Summer Arts Experiences for Youth, Teens and Adults

Arts enthusiasts of all ages and abilities are invited to register now for summer 2019 music, dance and theatre arts programs offered through CCM Preparatory and Community Engagement.

CCM Prep provides enjoyable and accessible arts opportunities within a highly creative environment that educate and inspire the whole student. Courses are taught by CCM Prep and collegiate faculty members and guest artists.

Summer programs include “Animal Crackers” or “Join the Circus” theatre arts and music workshops for young performers in preschool and elementary school. Middle and high school students can start summer on a high note by joining the “Summer Band Experience,” hone their skills in dance classes or become a “triple threat” musical theatre star at “Camp Bravo.”

Adults can also enjoy summer arts experiences in the New Horizons Orchestra or by participating in CCM Prep’s first intergenerational residential camp. “CCM Grand” is open to students and their grandparents who want to share and make new memories while experiencing dorm life at UC’s Marian Spencer Hall.

‘Soul-Fege’ Documentary Shares CCM Music Education Professor’s Journey from Soulful Genres to the Classics

The Organization of American Kodály Educators recently released a documentary showcasing a collaboration between CCM Music Education Professor Eva Floyd and the award-winning Voices of Unity Youth Choir (VOUYC). “Soul-Fege” A Journey from Soulful Genres to the Classics shares the gospel choir’s experience and Floyd’s teaching techniques as they prepared to travel to Budapest, Hungary, for the 2016 Laurea Mundi International Honor Choir Festival.

Floyd is a specialist in the Kodály approach to choral music education, which is based on the internationally acclaimed Hungarian teaching system for music literacy and ear training. She used Kodály-inspired teaching techniques to show the youth choir how to bridge the stylist gap between gospel and classical music.

The Voices of Unity Youth Choir, which is based in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and directed by Marshall White, trained with Floyd for more than four months to prepare for the international honor choir festival. The singers were accustomed to singing “soulful” genres with intense expression, so, at first, they struggled to find how their experience could relate to the classical genre, Floyd says.

They found a common foundation for music making hidden in the symbols and vocabulary of the music scores, which they used as cues from the composer to help bring the classical pieces to life with expression.

“They began to embrace singing a new genre with ownership and pride,” Floyd says. “Focusing on the expression markings in the music gave them confidence and helped foster a connection between reading music notation and singing with heart.”

The choir was very open to learning new techniques and new repertoire, Floyd says. They became leaders at the honor choir festival in Budapest. Floyd says that one of her favorite memories of the collaboration is from a rehearsal in Budapest. When the conductor asked the choir about the meaning of the Czech folk song they were singing, a singer raised her hand and explained the meaning with pride.

“The choir was very apt at digging into the core meaning and message of the songs,” Floyd remembers. “It was very important for them to sing with expression and emotion, and understanding the meaning of the text was the connecting point between singing soulful music and classical music.”

Floyd teaches choral methods, literature for school choir, history and philosophy of music education and Kodály musicianship classes for music education students at CCM. In 2015, she organized CCM’s first study abroad trip for the music education program, where students traveled to Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg and Paris on a 12-day adventure to deepen their appreciation and understanding of music. Floyd recently finished co-teaching a study abroad course “Vienna as a city of Music” with a mix of UC Honors students and CCM students, which she plans to offer again in two years.

The “Soul-Fege” A Journey from Soulful Genres to the Classics DVD-ROM includes preparation materials and lessons plans for the instructional unit Floyd created for the Voices of Unity Youth Choir. These materials can be utilized by any choral director who seeks to make classical music accessible to singers with a strong background in soulful music. The DVD is available for purchase through the Organization of American Kodály Educators website at https://www.oake.org/publications/.

“This experience has taught me that there are multiple pathways toward achieving artistry,” Floyd says. “I hope to help my CCM students learn that music education is most effective when it is multi-faceted, as we have opportunities to reveal the joy of learning about music in a variety of learning contexts.”

CCM Summer Hosts Orff Schulwerk Program for Music Educators

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music hosts the Orff Schulwerk summer program for music educators on July 17-28, 2017. This approach to learning, developed by Carl Orff and Gunild Keetman, builds musicianship through singing, playing instruments, speaking, moving and improvising.

Active music making is the core of this philosophy, supporting both conceptual learning and development. Program participants will learn the Orff Schulwerk approach to music education and will develop skills in singing, expressive speech, movement, Orff ensemble and percussion, improvisation, composition, recorders and pedagogy. The program offers three levels of course work:

  • Level I course is open to teachers who have earned at least a bachelor’s degree in music education as well as undergraduate seniors pursuing a degree in music education or music performance (previous Orff chapter workshop attendance is recommended).
  • Level II course is open to those who have completed an AOSA-approved Level I course.
  • Level III course is open to those who have completed an AOSA-approved Level II course.

This is an American Orff-Schulwerk Association-approved course. Through collaborative cooperation with the Cincinnati Children’s Choir Summer Festival, there will be opportunities to work with children in the choir.

Program faculty includes CCM Associate Professor of Music Education Amy Beegle and guest faculty members Rob Amchin, Judith Thomas, Danai Gagné, Donna Poppe and Lissa Ray.

CCM’s 2017 Orff Schulwerk program is now accepting applications. The application deadline is April 15, 2017; enrollment for CCM Summer Programs is limited.

Summer Memories: Music Education Students Study Abroad in Europe

As part of the first music education study abroad trip, a group of 20 adventurous CCM students traveled to Europe to study in the countries where Western art music was born last summer.

Associate Professor of Music Education Eva Floyd hopes to organize a second study abroad trip in spring 2018. The first trip led the students to Budapest, Vienna, Salzburg and Paris on the 12-day adventure to deepen their appreciation and understanding of music. Students participated in master classes, performed in historic venues, attended concerts and visited cities in which some of classical music’s greatest composers lived and worked.

“When you see the places where Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven were born, lived or worked, it makes the music seem more human,” Floyd said, adding that half of the students had previously never travelled internationally.

Supported by grants from UC International and the Tangeman Sacred Music Center, this was the first study abroad trip for a CCM music education class, according to Floyd.

Traveling to the cities in which these great composers created masterpieces gave new life to their art and added personal dimension to music beyond what can be taught in a classroom.

Similar to learning a foreign language, music literacy is strengthened through studies as well as experience. The act of engaging with a culture first hand is a crucial step towards fluency. Likewise, studying and experiencing music in the countries of its origin encourages a broader understanding of music and music education.

Program participant Taylor Limbert, a junior in vocal music education, reflected on his experience with the program:

“Actually talking with and learning from and performing for people from other cultures was so enriching and I’m so glad I had that opportunity. I had been to Europe before last summer’s trip but this trip was by far the most important in my personal journey as an educator and a person.”

Students observed music classes of a variety of grades and levels and participated in workshops at the Kodaly Institute in Hungary and the Orff Institute in Salzburg. They had previously studied the famous “Kodaly approach” to music education“seeing it in person made them realize the full potential of music education,” Floyd said.

As part of the program students were able to walk in the figurative footsteps of classical giants. They visited Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria — home to one of Haydn’s most important patrons. Students also toured Liszt’s and Kodaly’s residences in Budapest, Beethoven’s and Haydn’s residences in Vienna and Mozart’s birth home and family residence in Salzburg. Participants also heard concerts while traveling through these historic cities, including the famous Vienna Boys Choir.

Not only did the students visit cultural landmarks, they also had the opportunity to perform in some of the most historically significant and recognizable venues such as the Kodaly Institute in Hungary, St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Vienna, Mondsee Cathedral outside Salzburg and Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

“It is a privilege to see and walk through historic cathedrals,” Floyd said. “To make music in such a space allows you to take a piece of it home in your heart.”

Floyd prepared the group’s choral repertoire and organized a choral conducting master class with Peter Erdei, professor at the Liszt Academy and Kodaly Institute, for both CCM and Kodaly Institute students.

“The interchange between students from all corners of the globe was very exciting and proved to be a rich experience for all,” said Floyd, who studied in Hungary for two years before joining CCM faculty.

“The experience is so much more than just learning content and traveling. It helps you learn about yourself. It is very beneficial to get out of your comfort zone, and to be an outsider with language and culture. This helps you empathize with others and find confidence within yourself.”

CCM Alumnus Alex Gartner Appointed Artistic Director of Pensacola Children’s Chorus

CCM alumnus Alex Gartner (BM Music Education, 2012) has been named the new Artistic Director of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus (PCC) in Pensacola, Florida.

Gartner will take over for Allen and Susan Pote, who founded the organization in 1990 in conjunction with the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra.

Gartner’s new appointment ends a long and fruitful partnership with both CCM and the Cincinnati Children’s Choir (CCC), which began in 2000 when he joined CCC as a young choir member and performed with them in their international choral festival, “Worldsong.” Later, during his undergraduate studies, he rejoined the CCC; starting as an accompanist and student intern, he later rose to become the Richard Wesp Assistant Conductor, a position he held until his recent hiring by the PCC.

“Alex has special gifts that uniquely meet the needs of the Pensacola Children’s Chorus,” said CCC Founder, Managing Artistic Director and Conductor Robyn Lana. “He has grown tremendously throughout his years with CCC. It is with great pride, as his mentor, to see him become Artistic Director of his own program. A bright future is in store for Alex and for the Pensacola Children’s Chorus.”

In addition to his work with the CCC, Gartner has been very active in the local music scene. As a choral director, he has served as the director of traditional music and worship at Epiphany United Methodist Church in Loveland, Ohio. He has also served as music director for numerous local theatre productions and founded the Commonwealth Artists Summer Theatre, a summer theatre program based in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, that serves high school students in the Cincinnati metro area.

This theatre experience and his CCC experience will be merged in his new job in Pensacola. With over 300 students spread throughout seven different youth choirs, the PCC combines traditional children’s choir pedagogy and repertoire with the showmanship of musical theatre. The organization continues to collaborate regularly with the Pensacola Symphony and also works often with the Pensacola Opera and the University of West Florida.

CCM Dean Peter Landgren has announced the appointment of Scott D. Lipscomb to the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies. Lipscomb’s tenure at CCM will begin on May 31, 2016.

“I look forward to welcoming Dr. Lipscomb to Cincinnati this spring,” said Landgren. “He will be a strong advocate for student learning, an innovator when working with our curricula, a collaborative partner for our faculty members and a key member of our administrative team. Dr. Lipscomb’s interdisciplinary background lends itself perfectly to CCM’s approach to academics. His expertise will also allow CCM to maximize its research potential in collaboration with UC’s other colleges.”

Lipscomb comes to CCM from the University of Minnesota, where he most recently served as Associate Director of the School of Music, Director of Undergraduate Studies and Professor of Music. In these roles, he collaborated on the School of Music’s strategic planning process and served as primary author and facilitator for that institution’s 10-year NASM self-study, while also serving as a member of the school’s senior leadership team.

During his tenure at the University of Minnesota, Lipscomb also served as Interim Director of the School of Music from 2014-15. He headed the school’s Division of Music Education and Music Therapy from 2006-10 and 2011-13.

Prior to his appointment at the University of Minnesota, Lipscomb held faculty and administrative positions at Northwestern University, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Southern Methodist University and Webster University in Vienna, Austria.

Lipscomb’s primary areas of research include the integration of technology in the music classroom, the facilitation of music learning through technology and the incorporation of music across the K-12 curriculum, along with interactive instructional media development, sound for multimedia, website design and multimedia cognition.

A frequent presenter at regional, national and international conferences, Lipscomb has also had his research published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes. He is editor of the Journal of Technology in Music Learning.

Lipscomb is immediate past-President for the Association for Technology in Music Instruction, while serving on the boards of the Society for Music Perception & Cognition and the Technology Institute for Music Educators. He also chairs the Technology Institute for Music Educators’ research committee.

Lipscomb holds a PhD and an MA in Systematic Musicology from UCLA. He received his BM in Jazz Performance with an emphasis on electric and acoustic bass from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

Lipscomb will spend the month of June working side-by-side with CCM’s retiring Associate Dean of Academic Affairs and Director of Graduate Studies Terrell Finney.

“June will be a time to welcome Dr. Lipscomb to campus, as well as a time to thank Terrell Finney for his years of dedicated service to CCM,” Landgren added.

Lipscomb’s academic home at CCM will be the Division of Electronic Media and he will continue his research activities while fulfilling the duties of Associate Dean.

‘The Washington Post’ Spotlights the Innovative Teaching Methods of CCM Alumna Angela Ammerman

CCM alumna Angela Ammerman, née Hamester (BM Music Education, 2006), is gaining a great deal of attention thanks to her engaging approach to music education. In a recent Washington Post profile, reporter Moriah Balingit suggested, “If there was ever a music teacher prodigy, Angela Ammerman might be it.”

A teacher at Annandale High School in Fairfax County, Virginia, Ammerman was recently named the Virginia Orchestra Director of the Year by the American String Teachers Association. The Washington Post describes the honor as follows:

“It’s an award she earned for her one-of-a-kind method of teaching music, engaging students who range from the experienced elite to recent immigrants who are picking up an instrument for the first time.”

In describing her approach to the classroom to the Washington Post, Ammerman explained, “The kids don’t realize they’re learning. I just try to make the class environment really fun.”

A native of Cincinnati, Ammerman earned her Bachelor of Music Education degree from CCM and then pursued her masters degree at Boston University. She is currently working on her PhD in Music Education at George Mason University.

In the course of her studies, Ammerman has performed under the direction of distinguished conductors James Levine, Erich Kunzel, Xian Zhang, Steven Coker and Mark Gibson. She studied piano with Michael Chertock and Richard Morris. Additionally, Ammerman studied music education theory and practice with authorities Lizbeth Wing, and McGraw Hill’s Multi-Cultural Specialist Rene Boyer.

Upon graduation from CCM, Ammerman taught general music classes for Miamisburg City Schools in Miamisburg, Ohio. In 2007, she and her husband relocated to Jacksonville, North Carolina, where she was appointed Orchestra Director of Swansboro Middle and High School. While in North Carolina, Ammerman drastically increased orchestra membership, consistently received superior ratings at festival, and was selected Beginning Teacher of the Year.

In 2010, Ammerman was awarded the position of Orchestra Director at Robinson Middle School and Bonnie Brae Elementary School.  While living in Stafford, Ammerman also conducted the Rappahannock Youth Symphony’s Primo Orchestra from 2011-14

Ammerman currently maintains an orchestra program of nearly 150 students at Annandale High School in Fairfax County Public Schools.

Ammerman’s research has been featured in the American String Teacher Association’s 2014 Fall Issue and the National Association for Music Educators’ 2014 National Research Conference in St. Louis. Ammerman has presented research and practical sessions at International, National and State Music Education Conferences.

Ammerman’s studies and experiences have laid the groundwork for her philosophy of music education: that Critical Pedagogy provides students with a transformative and synergetic learning environment. Ammerman looks forward to helping students realize that music is a culturally valuable activity for everyone’s enjoyment; that music is historically relevant, provides a lab for students to apply the scientific method, and is a universal form of self and group expression.

Ammerman lives with her husband, Allen Ammerman, and three dogs in Alexandria, Virginia. She is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, American String Teachers Association and has been a guest conductor in All County and All City Orchestras. In her free time, she enjoys reading, writing, watching The Office, shoe shopping and practicing!

CCM Announces 2015 Schedule of Summer Programs, Educational Workshops and Special Events

CCM will offer a variety of educational workshops for both emerging artists and music educators in the summer of 2015, along with additional intensives and special events throughout the year.

CONDUCTING STRAVINSKY

Now in its eighth year, the CCM Orchestral Conducting Workshop offers an exciting and unique opportunity to explore two of the three pivotal ballets by Russian master IGOR STRAVINSKY.

Participants will have the opportunity to work with CCM’s top-flight orchestras, the Philharmonia and Concert Orchestra, on these iconic monuments of the 20th century.

Music directors Mark Gibson and Neil Varon will explore the rhythmic, sonic and metric complexities of these masterpieces with participants and apprentices from around the world.

A unique website is one of the most important marketing tools, public relations platforms and means of showcasing talent for artists looking for work. In this five day workshop, tailored especially for performing and visual artists with no or little experience in web design and production, you will receive instruction in industry-standard Adobe software tools as well as scripting languages like HTML, CSS and JavaScript. You will learn how to incorporate videos, audio clips and photographic slideshows of your work into a media-rich online presence. By the end of the course, you will have created and launched your very own website.

The Cincinnati World Piano Competition

59TH CINCINNATI WORLD PIANO COMPETITION

The reinvigorated Cincinnati World Piano Competition attracts applicants from every corner of the world. These talented artists proceed through a series of auditions over the course of a week to compete for over $45,000 in prize money.

The competition takes place in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium and culminates in a final round concert with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. Tickets for the competition will be on sale through the CSO box office in the spring.

ART OF THE PIANO

This two-week program gives up and coming pianists the opportunity to work with outstanding professional artists from across the globe. FILM SCORING INSTITUTE

Students of the Film Scoring Institute learn the ins and outs of composing music for the silver screen. Guest faculty members give students practical knowledge of the business and put it to use by using the latest composition technology to compose for a film clip.

The workshop ends with a live recording session so students leave with a fully realized and produced portfolio piece.

32ND ANNUAL CLASSICAL GUITAR WORKSHOP

Director: CCM Professor of Classical Guitar Clare Callahan
July 12 – 18

An intensive seven-day workshop for classical guitar enthusiasts of all levels. Participation in master classes and ensembles is organized according to individual skill levels (beginning, intermediate or advanced). A separate schedule of activities is available for young guitarists age 14 and under. There are special sessions on topics like recital preparation, performance, music theory, arranging for guitar, early music instruments, etc.

Each evening there is a concert, beginning with Sunday night’s Faculty Ensemble Recital. Established players and teachers from neighboring schools are a part of the coaching staff.

The workshop is a rich environment of players of all levels from all ages and geographical locations — junior high school through college and graduate school, young professionals in music and other fields, and retirees. The common denominator is love for the classical guitar.

Music education teachers will work with students from CCM’s Preparatory Division to develop and apply skills in singing, expressive speech, movement, recorder and more. This uniquely designed program gives real time practical experience and feedback in working with a classroom of children.

The program has expanded from previous years to include Level II as well as Level I and will feature one of the nation’s leading Orff specialists Danai Gagné as guest faculty.

A select group of talented young singers will be chosen to spend three weeks in residence at CCM under the guidance of a renowned faculty, with an emphasis on Italian repertoire.

CREATING CARMEN: AN OPERA BOOT CAMP

Working with an internationally renowned faculty led by Mark Gibson, director of Orchestral Studies at CCM, conductors and pianists will have daily Italian instruction, text and style sessions and conducting and coaching master classes. Students will also participate in staging rehearsals, work with singers and lead orchestra rehearsals.

Advanced opera singers will have the opportunity to learn a role in its entirety and work with renowned faculty and industry professionals, along with daily Italian classes and coachings. The course culminates in a semi-staged performance.
