CCM’s 2018-19 Concert Series Ticket Packages On Sale Now

Ticket packages are now on sale for the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s (CCM) 2018-19 Concert Series. From Sept. 11, 2018 through May 11, 2019, CCM’s students, faculty members and guest artists collaborate on an unprecedented lineup of Choral, Jazz, Orchestra, Percussion, Piano, Preparatory, String Quartet and Winds performances.

CCM’s Ariel Quartet Series Subscriptions and Concert Flex Packages are the best way to own every moment of the season ahead. For our most in-demand Prestige Events and Feast of Carols performances, subscribers can also pre-order tickets now to guarantee their seats! Concert single tickets go on sale Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018.

CCM Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence in Musical Theatre with Lavish Production of ‘Guys and Dolls’ and Gala Afterparty

CCM celebrates the 50th anniversary of its legendary BFA program in Musical Theatre with a special gala event on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018. Arts lovers are invited to show their saintly support and have a sinfully good time during an evening that includes a lavish production of the classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls followed by CCM’s Saints and Sinners Bash after party. Ticket proceeds support scholarships, student travel funds and master class opportunities.

The Musical Theatre program at CCM is the oldest in the country and was the first of its kind. A four-year bachelor of fine arts (BFA) program, it was used by the National Association of Schools of Theatre in formulating the guidelines for the accreditation of Musical Theatre programs nationwide. CCM Musical Theatre is widely recognized for its “ triple-threat” approach to training and many of its graduates are following careers as performers and creative artists in every facet of the entertainment industry.

CCM is celebrating the golden anniversary of its Musical Theatre program with a cherished musical comedy from Broadway’s golden age. Guys and Dolls tells the story of Nathan Detroit, a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while eluding the authorities. Detroit turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, who ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sister Sarah Brown as a result. Featuring iconic musical numbers like “Luck Be a Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat” and more, this Tony Award-winning show takes audiences from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana in a tale of saints and sinners and the lengths they will go for love.

Directed and choreographed by Professor Diane Lala, with musical direction by Professor Roger Grodsky, Guys and Dolls features the unbelievable on-stage talent of CCM’s musical theatre majors with live accompaniment by CCM’s world-class student orchestra. The performance takes place in CCM’s newly-renovated Corbett Auditorium.

After the performance of Guys and Dolls, attendees will be escorted to the Great Hall of UC’s Tangeman University Center for the Guys and Dolls-themed Saints and Sinners Bash. Guests can unwind in the Sinners Lounge, dance to music provided by the CCM Jazz Band and enjoy specialty drinks. Jeff Thomas Catering will provide themed food stations at the event, which also features a Graeter’s Ice Cream “Saints and Sinners” sundae bar.

The Saints and Sinners Bash will also celebrate the incredible history of CCM’s Musical Theatre program. CCM conferred the United States’ first BFA in Musical Theatre to Pamela Myers in 1969. Shortly after graduating, Myers received a Tony nomination in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her breakout role as Marta in Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical Company. Fifty years later, CCM Musical Theatre graduates continue to work on Broadway and throughout the nation in such productions as Anastasia, Hamilton, Waitress, The Book of Mormon, Pippin, Wicked, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Kinky Boots, Big Fish, Newsies and The Lion King. During the 2017-18 season, CCM again took the #2 spot in Playbill Magazine’s list of “10 Most Represented Colleges on Broadway,” coming behind only New York University. Graduates also represent CCM in national and international touring productions, in dinner theatres and theme parks, on cruise ships, on television, in talent agencies, as producers and in many of the related entertainment fields.

Attendees are invited to get “all dolled up” in 1940s attire for a fun-filled night out benefiting CCM’s student “stars of tomorrow.” The entire evening is hosted by CCMpower, a dedicated volunteer group comprised of fans, advocates and alumni. The funds raised by this event enable CCMpower to “fuel the future of the arts” by awarding student scholarships and grants. CCMpower is presenting Guys and Dolls and the Saints and Sinners Bash in lieu of CCM’s popular Moveable Feast gala fundraiser. Moveable Feast will return to CCM in January 2020.

The Saints and Sinners Bash is chaired by Heather Vecellio, with Dianne Dunkelman serving as honorary chair. The fundraiser will be the first event held during the tenure of new CCMpower President Arlene Katz. The gala fundraiser also celebrates the arrival of new CCM Dean Stanley Romanstein, whose tenure officially began on July 1, 2018.

When the locals in a small Russian hamlet learn that an undercover government inspector is coming for a surprise visit, a case of mistaken identity sends the whole village spiraling into a world of panic and greed. Part farce, part slapstick and wholly entertaining, this timely and spirited adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s classic play exposes the corruption of a provincial town with biting hilarity.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

Based on Henry James’ classic ghost-story novella, Britten’s compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle’s country estate, where the ghosts of a former valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. For mature audiences.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame begins as bells sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools, but he is held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. He escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though — the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. Parental discretion is advised. Victor Hugo’s novel contains mature themes and situations, which may be distressing for young viewers.

Mozart’s last opera seria displays some of his most memorable and marvelous arias! The story centers on Roman emperor Titus (Tito) who must choose a wife, but is unable to find a suitable match. In his search for an empress, Tito narrowly avoids an assassination plot instigated by his best friend Sesto and the former emperor’s daughter, Vitellia, who wants the throne for herself. Caught between his duty and his heart, the emperor must choose whether to rule with mercy or with an iron fist.

CCM’s 150th Anniversary Celebration Continues with Moveable Feast Showcase and Blue-Note After Party on Friday, Jan. 19

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music commemorates 150 years of excellence in the performing and media arts when its Moveable Feast fundraising event returns on Friday, Jan. 19, 2018. Featuring a special guest appearance by alumnus Brian Newman (Jazz Studies, att. 1999-2003), this year’s anniversary-themed Feast also celebrates the contributions of two CCM supporters with unique ties to the college’s history: Tom Baur and Peter Landgren.

Hosted by CCMpower — a dedicated volunteer group comprised of fans, advocates and alumni — Moveable Feast gives guests a chance to sample artistic and culinary delights throughout CCM’s newly renovated facilities. The funds raised by the event enable CCMpower to “fuel the future of the arts” by awarding student scholarships and grants.

Attendees roam through the expansive CCM Village at their leisure, socializing and enjoying dinner-by-the-bite and cocktails provided by Jeff Thomas Catering while creating their own menu of artistic experiences. Guests plan their own schedule of 20-minute samplings of student and faculty entertainment, including Jazz, Choral, Musical Theatre, Piano, Opera, Acting, Dance and Orchestra performances, along with tours of CCM’s Electronic Media facilities, Lighting Design labs and other backstage areas.

New for 2018! In honor of CCM’s 150-year legacy of inspiring the stars of tomorrow, this year’s program also features a performance by alumnus Brian Newman, who will solo with the Jazz Orchestra as the “opening course” on Moveable Feast’s artistic menu. As an accomplished trumpeter and vocalist, Newman’s brand of jazz resurrects the magic of Old New York, refreshing the glamorous era with nuances of his own rock-‘n’-roll edge. Bandleader for Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, Newman will also cap off the evening at the new Blue-Note After Party. Featuring performances by Newman and a rotating cast of CCM alumni and students, this exclusive after party lasts from 10:30 p.m. until midnight, allowing attendees to dance the night away after the conclusion of Moveable Feast. In celebration of CCM’s Sesquicentennial, this year’s Moveable Feast honors CCM alumnus and former dean Peter Landgren, who now serves as President of the UC Foundation and Vice President for Advancement at UC, and Tom Baur, descendant of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music founder Clara Baur.

Examine current popular music and its trending styles and genres. Students will critique selected songs from the weekly Billboard charts and various other media resources, considering both the hottest artists as well as promising up-and-comers. This one semester, repeatable course for non-dance majors introduces the techniques and movement vocabulary for contemporary and modern dance. Students will explore fundamental movement principles while developing improvisational and performance skills. They will also develop the perspectives necessary to critically analyze and further appreciate dance as an art form and educational tool with cultural values. Through interactive online instruction, students use recording devices (smartphones, laptops, camcorders, etc.) to develop their dance technique and build a dance community.

An overview of traditional music from many cultures and regions throughout the world, with emphasis on non-Western traditions. Explore the potentials of laptop computers for music making! Various technical topics (including analog versus digital sound, audio software, effects, gear, MIDI and audio programming languages) will be surveyed. In addition, a survey of the history of computer music will be conducted through seminal readings and recordings. These will provide participants with the technical and analytical skills to utilize their laptops to creative ends in both individual and group projects.

EXPERIMENTAL ROCK – ON CAMPUS (MWF 1:30–4:10pm)

This course will provide a detailed overview of the tools, techniques and musical styles which impacted Rock Music in the 1960s and 70s, as well as many mainstream and non-mainstream musical trends of the last 30 years. It will focus on innovations such as multi-tracking tape machines (which allowed for sound on sound, tape-delay and flange) and provide a technical overview of electronic instruments such as the synthesizer. Musical trends including the 1950s avant-garde and Minimalism will serve as a bridge to examinations of seminal acts such as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Can, Neu!, Brian Eno and Talking Heads among others.

This course provides a chronological survey that examines the relationship between the music, its most successful and colorful artists, the associated recording technology and the impact of the genre on American culture. Through critical listening and reading, students will be able to make historically informed and thoughtful decisions about the music they select and enjoy. Finally, the course will encourage students to seek and appreciate new styles (and perhaps inspire those who seek a career as a pop music artist). No prerequisite necessary.

The typical American spends about 11 hours a day consuming media. Could it be, based upon time usage alone, that media consumption is the most important activity in our lives? CCM’s ‘Moveable Feast’ benefit event returns on Friday, Jan. 22, 2016!

Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser returns in early 2016 when CCM presents its Moveable Feast! Help fuel the future of the arts by joining the Friends of CCM for this unique benefit event!

Moveable Feast showcases students and faculty members from all corners of CCM in an evening of live entertainment and by-the-bite cuisine. The festivities begin at 6:15 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 22!

A star-powered showcase of CCM’s world-class performing and media arts programs and state-of-the-art facilities, the fundraiser features samplings of artistic and culinary delights throughout CCM Village. In the spirit of ONECCM, Dean Peter Landgren will also announce exciting news about the future of the Friends of CCM and the Alumni Governing Boards during this year’s event!

Guests can explore the remarkable CCM Village and plan their own schedule of 20-minute samplings of student and faculty entertainment, including the Ariel Quartet, Costume & Make-Up Studios, Dance, Jazz, Electronic Media, Musical Theatre, Opera, Orchestra, Chamber Choir, Piano and more all while dining by the bite.
