Leonard Bernstein

CCM’s Bernstein at 100 Festival Concludes with ‘Lenny Week’

CCM brings its yearlong Leonard Bernstein at 100 Festival to a grand finale with a series of events running Oct. 26-Nov. 4, 2018, culminating with a rare concert performance of Stan Kenton’s Grammy Award-winning instrumental version of Bernstein’s West Side Story score.

Leonard Bernstein at 100 logo.Leonard Bernstein at 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Bernstein and his monumental career as a composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador and humanitarian. Visit ccm.uc.edu/bernstein for the full event schedule and ticket pricing, or refer to the event details below.

CCM’s “Lenny Week” begins with a Thinking About Music lecture on Mahler, Bernstein and Jewish Identity by guest scholar Matthew Mugmon on Friday, Oct. 26, in UC’s Albino Gorno Memorial CCM Library. It continues with a free screening of Gene Kelly’s On the Town on Monday, Oct. 29, at MainStreet Cinema in UC’s Tangeman University Center.

On Wednesday, Oct. 31, the CCM Wind Symphony presents “Bernstein and Friends,” featuring faculty artist and CSO clarinetist Ronald Aufmann in Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. The concert also showcases works by the composers most associated with the cultural icon, including Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by CCM Dean Stanley Romanstein.

Pianopalooza celebrates Lenny on Thursday, Nov. 1, with a concert by CCM’s Piano Department. The program features Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story played by faculty artists Michael Chertock and James Tocco, who will also play Bernstein’s arrangement of Aaron Copland’s El Salón México.

The CCM Philharmonia presents Bernstein’s Fancy Free and excerpts from Songfest on Friday, Nov. 2. CCM Director of Orchestra Studies Mark Gibson, who studied with Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center as the Bernstein Conducting Fellow in 1986, conducts the concert.

Guest conductor Vaughn Wiester leads the CCM Jazz Orchestra in Stan Kenton’s West Side Story on Sunday, Nov. 4. This Prestige concert is presented in loving memory of Stan Kenton Orchestra member, Cincinnati jazz drummer and CCM faculty member John Von Ohlen, who passed away on Oct. 3, 2018. Co-founder of the Blue Wisp Big Band, Ohlen was also a featured soloist with the Woody Herman, Ralph Marterie and Billy Maxted orchestras. He taught at CCM for more than 30 years, most recently as a leader of Jazz Combo and a drum instructor in fall 2017. During his career as a jazz musician, Ohlen played extended tours with Urbie Green, Holiday on Ice, Broadway pit orchestras, Tony Bennet, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney and many others.

CCM Opera d’Arte Presents Triple Bill of ‘Trouble in Tahiti,’ ‘The Telephone’ and ‘Tale for a Deaf Ear’

The three operas offer contrasting insights into the extremes of human relationships. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018.

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music presents the annual showcase of its young operatic stars-of-tomorrow with CCM’s Undergraduate Opera d’arte performances on Friday, Feb. 2 through Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018 in Cohen Family Studio Theater. This year features a triple bill of Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Telephone and a rarely-performed production of Marc Bucci’s Tale for a Deaf Ear.

Each short opera is connected by themes of romantic love, but the works address different stages of a relationship; Trouble in Tahiti shows the decline of a marriage, The Telephone depicts the beginning of courtship, and Tale for a Deaf Ear illustrates the devastating finale of more than just a marriage. The shows are tied together not only by subject matter but also by an Ed Sullivan-style emcee who will address the audience between operas.

This production of Trouble in Tahiti is part of CCM’s yearlong celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s centenary — one of the most comprehensive Leonard Bernstein at 100 festivals in the world. Bernstein wrote the work, which he considered a musical theatre piece, during his honeymoon in 1951. He had just finished composing On the Town, and he would finish Candide and West Side Story later in the 1950s.

“The music is evocative of the radio commercials of the time, especially in the jazz trio,” says Kenneth Shaw, CCM professor of voice and co-producer of this triple bill. “It serves as sort of a modern day Greek chorus by commenting on the sad story with upbeat ‘perfect picture’ music, which describes the ideal suburban life so many Americans were pursuing at that time.”

As Shaw and the triple bill’s director Amy Johnson searched for other short operas to present with Trouble in Tahiti, they found an article about a 1957 double bill by the New York City Opera that featured Bernstein’s work and Bucci’s Tale for a Deaf Ear. They were captivated by the story and the music. It took months of digging, with the help of the head of CCM’s Library, Jenny Doctor, to locate Bucci’s son and, with him, the orchestral score for Tale for a Deaf Ear.

According to the research of Shaw, Johnson and Doctor, this will only be the fourth presentation of the opera. The previous presentations were its premiere in 1954 at Tanglewood, a 1957 production by New York City Opera and a 1999 production at New York’s Center for Contemporary Opera.

“We sincerely hope our production of this work will bring it into its rightful place in the lexicon of American opera,” Shaw says. “We are giving it a much larger audience by placing this triple bill into the National Opera Association’s Opera Production Competition. This is the same competition in which several of our previous productions have won honors, including last year’s second place win for Albert Herring.”

Admission to CCM’s Undergraduate Opera d’arte triple bill is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at noon on Monday, January 29 and can be reserved in person at the CCM Box Office or by calling 513-556-4183. Reservations are limited to two tickets apiece.

CCM Celebrates Bernstein Centennial with Yearlong Festival

During its 150th anniversary season, CCM commemorates the 100th birthday of cultural icon Leonard Bernstein with an unprecedented series of events.

Celebration is in the air at CCM as the 150-year-old performing and media arts institution prepares to commemorate the 100th birthday of an American icon. In 2018, CCM will stage a year-long festival memorializing the legacy of composer, conductor, educator and activist/humanitarian Leonard Bernstein. Beginning on January 26, 2018, this wide-ranging festival will span two concert seasons and include over a dozen major performances, making it one of the world’s most comprehensive Bernstein Centennial Celebrations!

Leonard Bernstein at 100 logo.CCM’s Bernstein Festival features the talents of students and faculty members from throughout the college, united in a celebration of the life and career of one monumental artist. Bernstein, who would have turned 100 years old on Aug. 25, 2018, was a towering figure of 20th-century music and culture. He achieved international acclaim as the composer of West Side Story, Candide, On the Town and other stage and orchestral works. The celebrated conductor of the New York Philharmonic and other leading orchestras, Bernstein was equally esteemed as an educator whose televised Young People’s Concerts with the New York Philharmonic created generations of music lovers.

CCM’s festival showcases many of Bernstein’s signature works, including the iconic “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story, the monumental Age of Anxiety symphony for piano and orchestra, Songfest, the Symphonic Suite from Academy Award-winning film On the Waterfront, poignantly satirical one-act opera Trouble in Tahiti and much more.

In addition to Bernstein’s compositions, CCM’s festival also showcases music by Aaron Copland, Roy Harris, David Diamond and other composers who were championed by Bernstein through his work as a conductor and musical ambassador. According to Interim Dean bruce mcclung, “These works by Bernstein’s colleagues and the younger American composers who he promoted will help provide a cultural and musical context for CCM’s festival.”

For CCM Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson, programming this festival has been fulfilling both artistically and personally. “Lenny is the reason I am on the podium today and have been in the halls of CCM every year for the past 20 years,” says Gibson, who studied with Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center as the Bernstein Conducting Fellow in 1986.

A college-wide celebration of Bernstein’s artistic output and ongoing influence seemed like a natural fit for CCM’s ongoing Sesquicentennial Celebration, too. “During this same year that CCM celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding, Lenny would have celebrated his 100th birthday. Let’s do it for him, let’s throw him a party all year long.”

The festivities begin on Friday, Jan. 26, 2018, as Gibson leads the CCM Philharmonia in a concert featuring Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story along with Lenny’s “anthem,” the beloved Overture to Candide. The concert also features CCM Eminent Scholar of Chamber Music and Piano James Tocco in Bernstein’s highly dramatic second symphony, The Age of Anxiety. Like Gibson, Tocco was mentored by Bernstein earlier in his career, working closely with him on the world-premiere recording of Bernstein’s complete works for solo piano in 1983. Tocco has performed The Age of Anxiety with orchestras around the world and recorded it with Leonard Slatkin and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

CCM’s Bernstein Festival continues through March with performances by the Opera d’Arte undergraduate opera series, Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Orchestra, Chorale and much more. The festival then resumes in September with another series of events leading up to the CCM Jazz Orchestra’s performance of Stan Kenton’s West Side Story on Sunday, Nov. 4, 2018.

Tune In! Enjoy a preview of the festival courtesy of WVXU’s Around Cincinnati by visiting wvxu.org/post/celebrating-together-150-years-ccm-100th-birthday-bernstein.

Some of CCM’s Bernstein Festival performances are free and open to the general public, while others require paid admission. Audiences can also purchase the “Bernstein Experience” package, which provides access to every ticketed festival event and comes with additional perks. View complete schedule and ticketing information for CCM’s Bernstein Festival below.

CCM presents 'Candide' Nov. 16-19, 2017, in Patricia Corbett Theater. Photo by Mark Lyons.

CCM Slideshows: ‘Candide’

Here is your sneak peek at CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Candide, presented in conjunction with the world-wide Leonard Bernstein at 100 centennial celebration. Conducted by Mark Gibson with stage direction by Emma Griffin, the opera opens at 8 p.m. this Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

Based on Voltaire’s biting satirical novella of the same name, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide follows a naïve young man as he searches for the meaning of life in a cruel and chaotic world. CCM’s innovative new production of Candide uses a mysterious, one-room set design that inspires the theatricality of the show.

“CCM’s highly imaginative staging of this classic opera-musical is part of a long performance tradition of presenting Candide as a theatrically inventive show,” Griffin says. “In our production, we’ve given the performers a blank canvas with which to create a world of heightened theatricality and magical realism.”

Journey through Voltaire’s “best of all possible worlds” in CCM’s production of Candide, presented Nov. 16-19 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCM Box Office, over the telephone 513-556-4183 or online at ccm.uc.edu/boxoffice/mainstage/candide.

CCM’s 150th Anniversary Mainstage Series Presents Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide’

CCM presents "Candide" Nov. 16-19 in Patricia Corbett Theater.

CCM’s innovative staging of this classic opera highlights the artistry of the college’s “stars of tomorrow” and Bernstein’s extraordinary score.

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) continues its Sesquicentennial Mainstage Series with Candide, presented in conjunction with the world-wide Leonard Bernstein at 100 centennial celebration. Conducted by Mark Gibson with stage direction by Emma Griffin, the opera runs Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, through Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

Based on Voltaire’s biting satirical novella of the same name, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide follows a naïve young man as he searches for the meaning of life in a cruel and chaotic world. First performed on Broadway in 1956 and then revised in 1973, the comic operetta won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and multiple Drama Desk and Tony Awards. The opera’s energetic overture and the aria “Glitter and Be Gay” quickly became classics in their own time.

CCM’s innovative new production of Candide uses a mysterious, one-room set design that inspires the theatricality of the show. The performance will guide audiences’ imaginations as they journey through Voltaire’s “best of all possible worlds” with verve and humor.

“CCM’s highly imaginative staging of this classic opera-musical is part of a long performance tradition of presenting Candide as a theatrically inventive show,” Griffin says. “In our production, we’ve given the performers a blank canvas with which to create a world of heightened theatricality and magical realism.”

The production’s cast includes students from CCM’s opera, voice, musical theatre and acting programs, who use various items that are at hand to transform themselves and their surroundings in order to tell the story.

Candide is a dark, funny satirical tale about the dangers of an unexamined world view,” Griffin says. “Pushing through the humor and the showbiz pizazz of the piece is the vital question: What do people do in times of cultural uncertainty?”

“Our answer is: We make joyful art, raucous and rich and strange, full of life and beauty.”

Explore the “best of all possible worlds” in CCM’s production of Candide, presented Nov. 16-19 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets can be purchased in person at the CCM Box Office, over the telephone 513-556-4183 or online at ccm.uc.edu/boxoffice/mainstage/candide.

CCM Announces Sesquicentennial Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera

CCM presents nine eclectic and electrifying productions as part of its 150th Anniversary Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera. This annual series of performing and media arts events features CCM’s acclaimed “stars of tomorrow” in a collection of scaled-down stagings set in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and other intimate performance spaces.

Composer, lyricist, playwright and CCM alumnus Todd Almond.

Composer, lyricist, playwright and CCM alumnus Todd Almond.

The 2017-18 series opens in October with the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim, which showcases the songs of legendary musical theatre composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In November, CCM proudly presents The Earth is Flat, a touching coming-of-age story written by CCM alumnus Todd Almond (BM, 1999) and set in UC’s Calhoun Hall. November also sees the return of the 48-Hour Film Festival, which showcases 10 student-created short films produced over the course of a single weekend.

The series continues in early 2018 with productions of the operas Trouble in Tahiti, The Telephone, Tale for a Deaf Ear and Ariodante. CCM’s popular Dance Student Choreographers’ Showcase and TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student-Created New Works both return in March. The 150th Anniversary Studio Series concludes in Spring 2018 with the unconventional and moving musical drama The Theory of Relativity (directed and choreographed by CCM alumna Katie Johannigman) and the debut of an original 60-minute play created by CCM Acting for the 71st Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Studio Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which includes world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. For an initial overview of CCM’s 150th anniversary programming, please visit ccm.uc.edu/about/villagenews/notations-ovations/sesquicentennial-celebration.

The complete 2017-18 Studio Series lineup is listed below. Titles and dates are subject to change.

The search for identity by those least prepared with answers resonates with unexpected comedy in this new play commissioned by CCM Acting as part of the Cincinnati Playwrights Conference in 2016. A coming-of-age story set in Calhoun Hall, The Earth is Flat follows purple-haired Ethan as he takes his first tentative steps toward self-knowledge.

The CCM Opera d’arte Series of undergraduate productions proudly presents a triple bill of one-act American operas! Featured works include Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti, a one-act opera that candidly portrays the troubled marriage of a young suburban couple. Written between Bernstein’s biggest Broadway successes, Trouble in Tahiti draws upon popular song styles to deliver an uncompromising critique of Mid-century American marriage. The triple bill also includes Gian Carlo Menotti’s bit of froth, The Telephone, and Mark Bucci’s rarely produced, but haunting Tale for a Deaf Ear. Taken together, Opera d’arte’s triple bill offers three vastly contrasting views into the extremes of human relationships.

CCM’s 2017-18 Season Brochure Now Available In Print and Online

Welcome to CCM’s Sesquicentennial Performance Season!

The cover to CCM's 2017-18 Season Brochure. This season, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) celebrates the 150th anniversary of its founding with an unparalleled series of performances and special events designed to highlight a tradition of innovation and excellence dating back to 1867.

The history of CCM’s success involves three institutions separate in their origins but united by a common cause: the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the College of Music of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati. Sometimes partners and sometimes rivals, these three institutions would eventually join forces to establish one of the world’s premier schools for the performing and media arts.

In the year ahead, we will look back on CCM’s illustrious history, celebrate the careers of our impressive alumni and showcase the talents of our incredible students and faculty members. We look forward to welcoming you to the CCM Village to experience our ongoing history, the artistry of our alumni and a chance to experience the stars of tomorrow.
