CCM’s famed Faculty Jazztet.

CCM’s esteemed faculty artists take center stage during seven diverse performances this spring! Running from Jan. 8 through Feb. 13, 2018, these programs highlight music from multiple genres, from classical styles and musical theatre to jazz and beyond.

Each concert in CCM’s Faculty Artist Series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by internationally renowned artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM Musical Theatre Presents Annual Senior Showcase March 17 and 19

CCM Musical Theatre’s class of 2016.

Cincinnati audiences will get a sneak peek of an original showcase created by the 2016 graduating class from CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre during the annual “Not Famous Yet” Showcase, which runs on March 17 (CCMpower benefit performance) and March 19 in UC’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

The March 17 benefit performance starts at 7 p.m. and features dinner-by-the-bite and a post-performance celebration. Tickets for this benefit event are on sale now. For tickets and additional information, visit ccm.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/NotFamousYetShowcase2016.

The March 19 performances take place at 4 and 8 p.m. and are free, but reservations are required. Tickets for these free performances become available at the CCM Box Office at noon on Monday, March 14, 2016.

Each year, seniors from CCM’s musical theatre program travel to New York to present a showcase for the leading agents, casting directors and managers in the business. The show takes the format of a Broadway audition, with the actors showing off their solo and ensemble skills through song and dance numbers. This year’s work is created by the students themselves under the supervision of program chair Aubrey Berg, with musical direction by Julie Spangler and musical staging by Samantha Pollino.

This year’s performance is the 24th edition of the CCM “Not Famous Yet” showcase. The annual showcase began with the establishment of the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre in 1991. At the time of its inception, it was the only academic chair of its kind in the United States. Learn more about the Musical Theatre Class of 2016 here.

CCMpower Benefit Performance
The opening performance of the Musical Theatre Showcase on March 17 is part of a benefit for CCMpower. The event begins at 7 p.m. and includes dinner by the bite.

CCM alumna Lisa Howard.

This event also includes the presentation of the Musical Theatre Young Alumni Award, which recognizes outstanding professional achievement by graduates of CCM’s musical theatre program from the past two decades. This year’s recipient is Lisa Howard (BFA Musical Theatre, 1997).

A native of Akron, Ohio, Howard began her performing career with the ETC All American Youth Show Choir and Firestone High School’s performing arts department before heading to CCM.

She has worked at prominent regional theaters across the country including the St. Louis MUNY, Kansas City Starlight, the Olney Center, Goodspeed Opera House, Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera and Barrington Stage Company. She has performed in the national touring company of Les Misérables.

On Broadway, Howard has been seen as Diva 1 in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Missy Hart in 9 to 5, Head Nurse in Lincoln Center’s TONY award winning revival of South Pacific and – most notably – as Rona Lisa Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, for which she won a Drama Desk Award for Best Ensemble Performance.

In the concert scene, Howard has performed in “Broadway Today” produced by the Spot-On Entertainment Co. and in the Kaufman Center’s Broadway Close-up Series in “Stephen Schwartz: Magic To Do” and William Finn’s “More Infinite Joy” and “Even More Infinite Joy” at Merkin Hall. She has sung with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops. At Town Hall in NYC, Howard has performed in “Broadway Unplugged,” “A Night At The Operetta” and the popular “Broadway By The Year” series.

Howard’s debut solo CD, Songs of Innocence and Experience: the Music of William Finn was released in the Spring of 2011. Her TV and film credits include Ugly Betty and the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part II.

• CCMpower Member Tickets: $50 each; includes general performance seating, dinner-by-the-bite, wine and garage parking.
• Young Professional (40 and under) and CCM Alumni Tickets: $35 each; includes general performance seating, dinner-by-the-bite and garage parking.

Dinner-by-the-bite will follow the performance at 8 p.m. in the CCM Atrium. Proceeds benefit student career development grants and scholarships. Seating is limited. ORCHESTRATIONAL SCENARIOS IN THE MUSIC OF SIBELIUS
Blair Johnston, Indiana University
Orchestration—and, with it, the roles that timbre plays in musical rhetoric, expressive trajectories, and the choices made by performers—deserves more attention from scholars than it has received. In an ongoing project, Blair Johnston is examining the rich ways that orchestrational choices in post-Romantic symphonic works interact with the “structures” described by more conventional music analysis, an area that features music-theoretic vocabularies that do not always allow for easy discussion of certain dimensions of sound—in broad terms, its shapes, its colors, its densities—that are especially essential in music from this era. This talk will explore this through the use of late symphonic works by Sibelius (excerpts from the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Symphonies and Tapiola), music in which complex approaches to musical form and material are fused to a highly individual orchestrational language—indeed, music in which there may be almost no line between form, material and timbre.

The capstone of CCM’s festival celebrating “The Great Decade,” Richard Strauss’ 1905 masterpiece Salome represents the epitome of pre-World War I decadence, opulence and extravagance. An adaptation of Oscar Wilde’s controversial stage work of the same name, this staging is an hour and a half of irresistible drama and ecstatic hyper-romanticism. It is a must see for opera fans, theatre enthusiasts and lovers of massive orchestral sound.

TRANSMIGRATION, so named for “the movement from one place to another” or “the transition from one state of being to another,” is a festival of new works created by the acting students in CCM Drama. Six teams of actors craft and perform five original 30-minute shows. Philosophers have often considered the ontology of music, worrying over the relation between works, scores and performances. Yet, surprisingly, jazz has not received the same consideration, even though jazz—where performances of works such as “standards” vary widely in their properties—represents an even more challenging ontological problem than found in classical music. In this talk, Brian Kane will argue for a non-essentialist, network-based ontology of jazz standards. This argument will depend on two basic operations—chains of replication and chains of nomination—that together provide a robust basis for judgments concerning a performance’s identity and individuation. Also, just as jazz is an exemplification of a network-based ontology of music, Kane will try to draw out some wider implications for the ontology of music more generally.

In Goethe’s Triumph der Empfindsamkeit (1777), sensibility, feeling and sympathy are brutally exposed as trivial obsessions with postures and props. Excess, bad taste and poor behavior are the focus of Goethe’s hilarious critique of the craze unleashed by his own Sorrows of Young Werther. Embodied in this strange and funny text is satire aimed not only at the cult of Empfindsamkeit and at the works of the artist himself, but also at the conspicuous blurring of public and private spheres, the untoward exposure of personal proclivities and private feeling. Given the ubiquitous textbook designation of C. P. E. Bach as the architect of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ in music, Dr. Annette Richards takes another look at what ‘Empfindsamkeit’ might mean, especially for the composer’s late keyboard works. By examining this music (along with then-contemporary views on humor, satire and other cultural elements), the audience may have to reconsider Bach’s own claims about the competing aesthetics of public and private music.

CCM Musical Theatre Presents Annual Senior Showcase March 26 and 28

Cincinnati audiences will get a sneak peek of an original showcase created by the 2015 graduating class from CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre during the annual “Not Famous Yet” Showcase, which runs on March 26 (Friends of CCM benefit performance) and March 28 in UC’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

The March 26 benefit performance starts at 7 p.m. and features dinner by the bite and a post-performance celebration. Tickets for this benefit event are on sale now. For tickets and additional information, visit ccm.weshareonline.org/ws/opportunities/NotFamousYetShowcase2015.

The March 28 performances take place at 4 and 8 p.m. and are free, but reservations are required. Tickets for these free performances become available at noon on Monday, March 23.

Each year, seniors from CCM’s musical theatre program travel to New York to present a showcase for the leading agents, casting directors and managers in the business. The show takes the format of a Broadway audition, with the actors showing off their solo and ensemble skills through song and dance numbers. The work is created by the students themselves under the supervision of program chair Aubrey Berg and with the assistance of musical director Julie Spangler.

This year’s performance is the 23rd edition of the CCM “Not Famous Yet” showcase. The annual showcase began with the establishment of the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre in 1991. At the time of its inception, it was the only academic chair of its kind in the United States. Learn more about the Musical Theatre Class of 2015 here.

Friends of CCM Benefit Performance
The opening performance of the Musical Theatre Showcase on March 26 is part of a benefit for the Friends of CCM. The event begins at 7 p.m. and includes dinner by the bite.

CCM alumnus Mickey Fisher.

This event also includes the presentation of the Musical Theatre Young Alumni Award, which recognizes outstanding professional achievement by graduates of CCM’s musical theatre program from the past two decades. This year’s recipient is Mickey Fisher, who graduated from UC in 1995.

A writer, director and actor, Fisher created and serves as executive producer for Extant, a science fiction television program developed by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television and CBS Television studios. The thriller stars Academy Award-winner Halle Berry and is currently shooting its second season. Fisher’s credits also include the films King of Iron Town and Summer Nuts, as well as the musical Something in the Water.

CCM’s Spring Faculty Artist Series begins with Pat Linhart and Julie Spangler’s annual cabaret concert on Sunday, Jan. 18, and concludes with a performance by Adjunct Professor of Ethnomusicology Tsun-Hui Hung, showcasing the erhu (Chinese fiddle) on Sunday, Feb. 22.

Each concert in this series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by world-class artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM Performances Make Critics’ “Best of 2014” Lists

In case you missed it, Music for All Seasons Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Enquirer and Music in Cincinnati have each published “year in review” stories, looking back on the great performances of 2014.

Rafael de Acha selected 10 special performances from 2014 for Music for All Seasons Cincinnati, including:

• Professor Emeritus Frank Weinstock‘s return to the CCM stage as part of the 2014 Bearcat Piano Festival;
• Guest artist Andreas Scholl‘s all-Lieder recital at CCM;
• CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Les Misérables, which “won them a fine judgment from judicious lovers of the musical,” according to de Acha;
• CCM’s Studio Series production of Chabrier’s L’ étoile;
• CCM’s Opera d’arte Series production of Ravel’s L’ enfant et les sortilèges;
• and CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Don Pasquale, directed by the-graudate student Omer Ben-Seadia, who was in “full command of the style that infuses the spirit of Donizetti’s masterpiece,” by de Acha’s estimation.

Janelle Gelfand picked her 14 highlights of 2014 for the Enquirer, including:

• the Ariel Quartet’s groundbreaking Beethoven Cycle at CCM, which Gelfand dubbed the year’s “most impressive survey;”
• CCM’s Choral and Orchestral regional premiere of John Adams’ El Niño, which she described as the year’s “biggest spectacle;”
• and CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera Hansel and Gretel, which she called the year’s “most magical” performance.

Mary Ellyn Hutton widened her selection to 21 highlights for 2014 for Music In Cincinnati, including:

• CCM’s production of John Adams’ El Niño, which “alternately intrigued, touched and pinned one’s ears to the wall,” according to Hutton;
• CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale;
• The Academy of Ancient Music’s regional debut at CCM, performing the complete orchestral suites of J.S. Bach;
• CCM’s performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 at Christ Church Cathedral, which Hutton described as a “treat for both eyes and ears;”
• and CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Hansel and Gretel.

The magic continues in 2015, as CCM presents over 125 major public performances during UC’s Spring Semester, beginning with a faculty artist recital by Pat Linhart and Julie Spangler on Sunday, Jan. 18, and concluding with the CCM Prep Jazz Extravaganza concert on Sunday, May 17!

CCM Announces Spring 2015 Calendar of Major Events

This spring, CCM proudly presents over 125 major public performances from Jan. 18 through May 17, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported drama, musical theatre and opera productions!

Highlights of CCM’s spring concert series include the return of Cincinnati’s premier fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 23; a CCM Jazz tribute to the music of Ray Charles on Feb. 15; a double-bill performance of Berlioz’s Te Deum and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring by the CCM Philharmonia, Chamber Choir, Chorale and Cincinnati Children’s Choir on March 13; a star-studded Bearcat Piano Festival running March 23 – April 4; and a Spring Dance Concert featuring accompaniment by the CCM Chamber Choir, student percussionists, faculty artist James Tocco and student pianists running April 23 – 25.

The internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet will also continue its 2014-15 concert series at CCM with performances on Jan. 27 and March 31. Recently hailed by The Strad for its “vitality, clarity of line, depth of sound and… impeccable sense of direction,” CCM’s string quartet-in-residence will perform works by Brahms, Bartók, Schubert, Stravinsky and more this spring.

CCM’s Mainstage Series will also resume in early 2015 with a production of Wendy Wasserstein’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning drama The Heidi Chronicles, running Feb. 11 – 15; a highflying trip to Neverland with Peter Pan: The Musical running March 5 – 8; and a production of Mozart’s magnificent opera Così Fan Tutte, running April 9 – 12.

Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work! Groundbreaking Mexican composer Daniel Catán, creator of the operas Il Postino and Florencia en el Amazonas, began an adaptation of the 1941 Frank Capra film Meet John Doe, but it remained unfinished at his untimely death in 2011. Opera Fusion: New Works welcomes a creative team tasked with the completion of the work: Eduardo Diazmuñoz, Michaela Eremiášová, Jairo Duarte-López, and the composer’s widow, Andrea Puente Catán. Following a 10-day residency, the workshop will culminate in a public performance of excerpts of the new opera. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story in 1942, Meet John Doe tells the story of Ann Mitchell, a newspaper columnist who unwittingly sparks a grassroots populist movement with a fictional letter to the editor from “John Doe” protesting society’s ills, and John Willoughby, a homeless former baseball player whom she hires to pose as the public face of John Doe.

The Romantic fragment, in poetry and music, points toward something that is ineffable – the sounds listeners hear point toward those that cannot be realized. Whether it is beyond or still within Romanticism, it is this aesthetic that Professor Michael Cherlin associates with Schoenberg and Webern, most particularly. Nono’s string quartet, a meditation on Diotima, continues that tradition. The lecture will explore the implications of this composition for a poetics of musical interpretation (whose falsifying “scientific” name is analysis).

Love, power, morality, corruption… Monteverdi’s final masterpiece, The Coronation of Poppea, is often described as his greatest achievement, combining mythic and very human themes and featuring some of his most glorious music. In Goethe’s Triumph der Empfindsamkeit (1777), sensibility, feeling and sympathy are brutally exposed as trivial obsessions with postures and props. Excess, bad taste and poor behaviour are the focus of Goethe’s hilarious critique of the craze unleashed by his own Sorrows of Young Werther. Embodied in this strange and funny text is satire aimed not only at the cult of Empfindsamkeit and at the works of the artist himself, but also at the conspicuous blurring of public and private spheres, the untoward exposure of personal proclivities and private feeling. Given the ubiquitous text-book designation of C. P. E. Bach as the architect of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ in music, Dr. Annette Richards takes another look at what ‘Empfindsamkeit’ might mean, especially for the composer’s late keyboard works. By examining this music (along with then-contemporary views on humor, satire and other cultural elements), the audience may have to reconsider Bach’s own claims about the competing aesthetics of public and private music.

Originally premiered in 1969 for the dedication of Cincinnati’s Rockdale Temple, Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice was a co-commission by CCM and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, with a premiere conducted by Erich Kunzel. The text is drawn from the Hebrew Bible, speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Negro Spirituals, the writings of Hillel and lyrics by the composer’s wife, Iola Brubeck.

CCM Musical Theatre Presents Annual Senior Showcase on March 13 and 15

Cincinnati audiences will get a sneak peek of an original showcase created by the 2014 graduating class from CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre during the annual “Not Famous Yet” Showcase, which runs on March 13 (Friends of CCM benefit performance) and March 15 in UC’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

The March 13 benefit performance starts at 7 p.m. and features dinner by the bite and a post-performance celebration. Tickets for this benefit event are on sale now. For tickets and additional information, click here.

The March 15 performances take place at 5 and 8 p.m. and are free, but reservations are required. Tickets for these free performances become available at noon on Monday, March 10.

CCM Announces Spring 2014 Calendar of Major Events

UPDATED March 7, 2014: CCM is delighted to announce its spring 2014 schedule of major events. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM presents nearly 150 major public performances from Jan. 12 through May 18, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported opera, musical theatre, drama and dance productions.

Highlights of CCM’s spring concert series include the return of Cincinnati’s premiere fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 17, the Ariel Quartet’s Beethoven Cycle running Jan. 23 – March 29, a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle by guest artists Gerald Finley and Julius Drake on Feb. 5, the fifth annual Bearcat Piano Festival running Feb. 6 – 11, the 17th annual PRISM concert on Feb. 23, a performance of John Adams’ El Niño on March 2 and a celebration of the music of jazz legend Thelonius Monk on March 9.

CCM’s Mainstage Series also continues in early 2014 with a production of Mary Zimmerman’s Metamorphoses, directed by guest artist D. Lynn Meyers, running Feb. 5 – 9; the CCM debut of the iconic musical Les Misérables, running Feb. 27 – March 9;  Donizett’s comedic opera Don Pasquale, running April 3–6; and the quintessential romantic ballet Giselle, running April 17–19.
