The Ariel Quartet Welcomes Guest Artist Yura Lee for March 26 Concert at CCM

The Ariel Quartet concludes its 2018-19 concert series at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) by showcasing the works of three masters of chamber music at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 26, in the acoustically stunning Corbett Auditorium. Tickets to the performance are on sale now and available for purchase online.

The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s joyous String Quartet No. 5 in A Major, Op. 18, which was modeled after Mozart’s String Quartet No. 18 in A Major, K. 464.

Next on the program is Robert Schumann’s intensely expressive String Quartet No. 1 in A Minor, Op. 41, No. 1.

Finally, the Ariel Quartet will be joined by guest artist Yura Lee, viola, for a performance of Johannes Brahms’ magisterial String Quintet No. 2 in G Major, Op. 111.

A performer of international renown, Lee has won top prizes for both violin and viola in numerous competitions. At the age of 12, she became the youngest artist ever to receive the Debut Artist of the Year prize at the “Performance Today” awards given by National Public Radio. She is also the recipient of the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant given by Lincoln Center in New York City. Her CD with Reinhard Goebel and the Bayerische Kammerphilharmonie, titled Mozart in Paris (Oehms Classics), received the prestigious Diapason d’Or Award in France. Described by the American Record Guide as “a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power,” the Ariel Quartet has earned a glowing international reputation. The ensemble is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The Ariel Quartet’s Concert Series Continues at CCM on Jan. 29

The Ariel Quartet resumes its 2018-19 concert series at CCM at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the acoustically stunning Corbett Auditorium. Tickets to the performance are on sale now. Click here to purchase tickets online.

The concert opens with Ludwig van Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 16, Op. 135. Beethoven’s last major work, the quartet premiered in March 1828, one year after the composer’s death.

Next on the program is Alexander Zemlinsky’s turbulent String Quartet No. 2, Op. 15, which was first performed in 1918.

The concert closes with Johannes Brahms’ lighthearted and cheerful String Quartet No. 3, Op. 67. Brahms’ last string quartet, the work received its premiere performance on Oct. 30, 1876.

Join us for a concert of orchestral piano repertoire celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Cincinnati World Piano Competition this Saturday, July 30! Performances include past CWPC medalists Angela Cheng and Daria Rabotkina, along with CCM Professor and CWPC Artistic Director Awadagin Pratt. All performances accompanied by the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra led by Keitaro Harada.

The Ariel Quartet’s 2015-16 CCM Concert Series Comes to a Conclusion on March 1

CCM’s internationally-acclaimed string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet concludes its 2015–16 concert series at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, in Corbett Auditorium.

The program will include Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in F Major, Op. 77, No. 2; Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 7; and Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet Op. 51, No. 2. Tickets for this performance are on sale now.

The Ariel Quartet is comprised of Alexandra Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The Quartet was formed in Israel 17 years ago when its members were young students, and they have been playing together ever since. Recently awarded the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Quartet serves as the string quartet-in-residence at CCM where they direct the chamber music program and perform their own annual series of concerts.

The Ariel Quartet’s March 1 performance is dedicated to the loving memory of CCM emeritus faculty member Peter Kamnitzer, who served as violist for the legendary LaSalle Quartet from 1949 until the ensemble’s retirement in 1988. Kamnitzer passed away in Israel on Feb. 23, 2016, at the age of 93. As a member of the LaSalle Quartet, Kamnitzer helped to cement CCM’s reputation on the international stage. CCM’s Faculty Artist Series Resumes on Jan. 12 With Free Performances By World-Class Musicians

CCM’s esteemed faculty artists take center stage during eight diverse performances this spring! Running from January 12 through February 19, these programs highlight music from multiple genres, including classical, jazz, musical theatre and more!

The Spring 2016 Faculty Artist Series commences on Tuesday, Jan. 12, with a performance of Johannes Brahms’ works for cello and piano by Alan Rafferty and Sandra Rivers, coinciding with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s two-year Brahms Fest. The series concludes on Friday, Feb. 19, with a performance by the famed Percussion Group Cincinnati, which is comprised of CCM faculty members Allen Otte, Russell Burge and James Culley.

Each concert in CCM’s Faculty Artist Series series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by world-class artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM’s internationally-acclaimed string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet concludes its 2014–15 concert series at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31, in Corbett Auditorium.

The program will include Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 76, No. 4, Béla Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5, Sz. 102 and Johannes Brahms’ String Quartet No. 3 in B-flat Major. Tickets for this performance are on sale now.

Last season, the Quartet performed its first complete Beethoven Cycle in Corbett Auditorium, a feat that the Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand characterized as “a challenge like climbing Mount Everest, and you could only marvel at their musicianship each step of the way.” You can watch excerpts from last season’s concert series by visiting www.arielquartet.com/video.

“The Cycle” proved so popular that the Ariel Quartet was invited to perform another complete cycle of Beethoven’s string quartets for New York City audiences at the SubCulture music venue on Bleeker Street.

The Quartet was formed in Israel 16 years ago when its members were young students, and they have been playing together ever since. CCM’s Fall Choral Series Includes Collaborations with Local High School Choirs, Early Music Guest Artists, CCM’s Department of Dance and More

Creative collaborations and varied programming are the defining traits of CCM’s Choral Series of concerts this fall!

CCM’s acclaimed choirs present a strikingly diverse series of productions, ranging from a concert of Shakespearean choral settings on Sunday, Sept. 21, to a concert of songs of peace and freedom on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

Highlights include a collaborative concert with CCM’s Café MoMus Ensemble and Ballet Ensemble on Oct. 18 and 19, featuring Aaron Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Unicorn, the Gorgon and the Manticore.

CCM’s Choral Series also includes a newly composed chamber orchestra version of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem performed at Calvary Episcopal Church on Nov. 9 and a large-scale concert production of Claudio Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 performed at Christ Church Cathedral on Nov. 16.

CCM closes out this fall’s Choral Series with the fan-favorite Feast of Carols on Dec. 6 and 7. A holiday tradition at the University of Cincinnati, this year’s Feast of Carols features CCM’s choirs and Concert Orchestra performing alongside guest choirs from Conner Middle School, Lakota East High School and Mason High School.

CCM’s Orchestras Celebrate the Works of Brahms and Tchaikovsky This Fall

The acclaimed CCM Philharmonia opens its fall concert series with a celebration of the works of Johannes Brahms and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on Friday, Sept. 12.

Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Timothy Lees and principal cellist Ilya Finkelshteyn join the CCM Philharmonia for a performance of Brahms’ Concerto for Violin and Cello during this concert.

Music director and conductor Mark Gibson recently explained to the Cincinnati Enquirer: “I’ve been fascinated by this relationship between Brahms and Tchaikovsky for a long time. They were drinking buddies and hated each other.”

The CCM Philharmonia’s concert on Sept. 12 and the CCM Concert Orchestra’s concert on Sept. 19 both promise to explore the relationship between these “strange bedfellows.”

The Ariel Quartet Opens CCM’s 2014-15 Concert Series With Distinguished Guest Artist Menahem Presser

The legendary Menahem Pressler joins the Ariel Quartet for Brahms’ Piano Quintet on Sept. 9.

CCM’s internationally acclaimed string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet will be joined by legendary pianist Menahem Pressler for a program of Haydn, Berg and Brahms on Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Grand Prize winners at the 2006 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and 2014 recipients of the prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the Ariel Quartet thrilled audiences with its first complete cycle of Beethoven’s String Quartets at CCM last season.

During the CINCYinNYC showcase week this May, the New York Times proclaimed that the Quartet has “a gift for filling the pristine structures of Classicism with fire.”

The Ariel Quartet opens CCM’s 2014-15 Concert Series with a performance featuring legendary pianist Menahem Pressler. Founding member and pianist of the Beaux Arts Trio, Pressler will join the Quartet for a performance of Brahms’ majestic Piano Quintet in F Minor, Op. 34. See full concert program details below.
