CCM Presents Staged Version of J. S. Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’

CCM presents J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion, a work for chamber orchestra, choir and vocal soloists that premiered in 1724. The staged performances of this timeless piece will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at Cincinnati’s Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Ave.

This production features CCM’s Chamber Choir and Concert Orchestra, led by Earl Rivers, CCM director of choral studies. Artist diploma candidate Audrey Chait directs the St. John Passion and will also direct CCM’s Studio Opera production of Dinner at Eight in February. Faculty artist Daniel Weeks, tenor, sings the role of the Evangelist, with student soloists playing the other roles.

“The Passion story is told here through the eyes of the Apostle John,” Chait says. “Through reliving his memories of the final days of Jesus, he explores both the interior and exterior of the narrative, as well as his own role in creating the canonical version of the text. We utilize a simple, timeless visual language to emphasize the beauty and transcendence of Bach’s landmark work.”

“In recent seasons throughout the world, staged productions of Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion have sprung up and blossomed, as music directors and stage directors explore new means of expressing these timeless settings of the Passion story,” Rivers adds. “By staging the St. John Passion, CCM is preparing CCM students for real-world professional performances they will experience over their careers.”

Student soloists will sing the roles of Jesus (Daren Small, baritone), Pontius Pilate (John Siarris, baritone) in this production, with the parts for the Disciples sung by Claire Lopatka and Victoria Okafor, sopranos; Michelle La Jeunesse and Brenda Iglesias Zarco, mezzo-sopranos; Victor Cardamone, tenor; Joshua Cook and Antonia Cruz, baritones; and Michael Hyatt, bass.

Admission for this production is free, but subscribers receive access to a preferred section of the best seats. Subscribers can call the CCM Box Office on Monday, October 22 to reserve seats.

CCM’s production of Bach’s St. John Passion will be sung in German with English surtitles.

CCM Chamber Choir and Philharmonia Perform J.S. Bach’s Monumental ‘Mass in B Minor’

The beloved choral work will be presented in two concerts on Nov. 4 and 5 at two Cincinnati churches. Tickets available through the CCM Box Office.

CCM’s Chamber Choir and Philharmonia Orchestra combine forces for two monumental performances of J.S. Bach’s grand choral-orchestral achievement, Mass in B Minor. Under the direction of Earl Rivers, the work will be performed in concert at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4,  at Christ Church Cathedral and at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, at Knox Church.

The Mass in B Minor is the Mount Everest of the Late Baroque period. It represents Bach’s supreme achievement of universality, assembling a monumental setting of the Ordinary of the Mass that presents a breadth of musical style greater than any other choral-orchestral work in the Western canon. “The Mass in B Minor is a synthesis of every stylistic and technical contribution Bach made to music,” Rivers says.

“Audience members unfamiliar with Bach’s Mass in B Minor may be surprised by the range and variety of musical styles within the 27 movements,” Rivers says. “Full-throttled chorus and orchestra movements with high Baroque trumpets, flutes, oboes, bassoons, timpani, organ, harpsichord and strings are contrasted with solo and duet movements that reflect the virtuoso operatic arias that were beloved in the Late Baroque.”

The two performances of the masterwork will showcase different student soloists from CCM’s opera and voice programs. Baroque specialists Adriana Contino, cellist, and Garry Clarke, violinist, have coached the CCM Philharmonia and vocal soloists in preparation for the concerts.

The Nov. 4 performance will feature BM Voice student Page Michels, soprano; second-year MM Voice student Abigail Hoyt, mezzo-soprano; second-year DMA Voice student Jill Phillips, mezzo-soprano; second-year MM Voice student Dongwhi Baek, tenor; and second-year MM Voice student Samson McCrady, baritone.

The Nov. 5 performance will feature first-year AD Opera student Murrella Parton, soprano; first-year AD Opera student Kayleigh Decker, mezzo-soprano; second-year AD Opera student Amber Fasquelle, mezzo-soprano; first-year AD Opera student Benjamin Lee, tenor; and second-year DMA Voice student Matthew Worth, baritone.

“Enabling CCM students to study, rehearse and perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor is an essential component of CCM’s commitment to providing our students a comprehensive immersion in Baroque performance practices,” Rivers says. “As Mass in B Minor represents the highest musical achievement of the Late Baroque, it is a filing work to perform in CCM’s 150th Anniversary Season.”

CCM Presents Staged Version of Bach’s ‘St. Matthew Passion’

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music will showcase J.S. Bach’s monumental St. Matthew Passion at Cincinnati’s Christ Church Cathedral at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. Conducted by CCM Director of Choral Studies Earl Rivers with stage direction from artist diploma candidate Andreas Hager, the performance features faculty artist Daniel Weeks and student aria soloists.

Known for its stunning choruses, interplay between recitative and aria and sublime storytelling, St. Matthew Passion has made an enduring mark in music history as a sublime example of a musical setting of the passion story. Thanks in part to a grant from the Cambridge Charitable Foundation, CCM’s staged performance illuminates the dramatic intensity of this Baroque masterwork, which retells the compelling story of the events leading up to the trial of Jesus, his crucifixion and burial.

“Bach was interested in the spiritual drama of the crucifixion, not only of Jesus but of society,” said Hager, a first-year artist diploma candidate in opera stage direction. “Our production explores the moral culpability we all face living in a complex world. From Judas to Peter to Pilate — no one can escape from the consequences of their choices.”

“Our production is spare and minimalist, allowing the full force of Bach’s music to take the forefront.”

The CCM Chamber Choir, Cincinnati Children’s Choir and CCM Philharmonia will combine forces to perform this massive work. To make this work come to life on stage, the CCM production emphasizes the piece’s storylines by designating arias to specific characters.

The story is presented by a narrator called the Evangelist, played by faculty artist Daniel Weeks, tenor, with student soloists as Jesus (Samson McCrady, bass-baritone), Pilate (Christian Pursell, baritone) and aria singers (Ashley Fabian and Jackie Stevens, sopranos; Reilly Nelson and Paulina Villarreal, mezzo-sopranos; Thomas J. Capobianco, tenor and Eric Shane Heatley and Joseph Mazzara, baritones).

CCM has a long history with St. Matthew Passion, which dates back to a February 1970 performance that featured alumna Kathleen Battle (MM Voice, 1971) singing the aria, “Aus liebe.” The college most recently performed the work in November, 2011. This staged performance, held at Cincinnati’s St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, was the first of its kind in the Midwest.

CCM’s Thinking About Music Lecture Series Resumes On Friday, Jan. 27

Each semester, CCM welcomes distinguished experts for a series of free Friday afternoon musical discussions. This spring, the Thinking About Music lecture series will present four free public talks, beginning with a presentation on Arnold Schoenberg and the 1913 Scandal Concert by Vanderbilt University Professor of Musicology Joy H. Calico on Friday, Jan. 27.

Sponsored by the Joseph and Frances Jones Poetker Fund of the Cambridge Charitable Foundation, these music theory and history discussions feature diverse topics presented by distinguished experts from all over the United States and are designed to engage participants’ imaginations and to consider music in new ways.

This semester’s guest lecturers also include University of Kentucky Professor Donna Kwon (Feb. 10), Case Western Reserve University Professor Francesca Brittan (March 3) and Bowling Green State University Professor Per Broman (April 7). Since its inception in 1997, the Thinking About Music Series has presented over 130 lectures and one symposium by guests from a number of different colleges, universities, schools of music, foundations, institutes, museums and publications.

The subjects of the lectures have covered historical musicology, music theory and ethnomusicology, along with the ancillary fields of organology, dance, music business and law, cognitive psychology, and the philosophy, theology and sociology of music.

On March 31 of 1913, Arnold Schoenberg conducted a concert in the Great Hall of Vienna’s Musikverein, which became known as the city’s most notorious scandal concert. The event was broken up by a melee, charges were filed and the subsequent court proceedings were reported in the press. This lecture analyzes the ways in which both the scandal and Schoenberg’s response to it sit at the nexus of fin-de-siècle anxieties about Central European concert life, the anti-noise movement and emerging copyright law.

In Korean folk expressive culture, the outdoor village courtyard or madang is often conceived in opposition to the concert stage or mudae. In this presentation, Donna Kwon will discuss how the madang became central to the promotion of site-specific Korean drumming and dance. She will first discuss how this contributes to the expressive ecology of a place-based tradition in shamanist ritual forms of Korean drumming or p’ungmul. Then she will explore how the madang and site-specific performance concepts are applied by contemporary ch’angjak yeonhui groups. These groups consist of performers who are trained in Korean drumming and other traditional performing arts but who combine them into new works.

Hector Berlioz, among the first of the modern conductors, was a larger-than-life figure, at once magisterial, quasi-magical and military. Among the formative moments of his conducting career was a concert given at the height of the Exposition universelle (Paris, 1855), which established him as a musical leader of formidable power. Here he relied on a new wedding of music and technology — an “electric baton” — to wield the massive forces under his command. This talk examines the nature of his device and, more broadly, the ways in which telegraphy and electricity (both artificial and nervous) emerged as central to romantic notions of conducting.

Ingmar Bergman’s love of classical music, especially that of J.S. Bach, is well known and is exhibited frequently in his films. Many films also feature musicians. In this presentation, Broman will analyze the role of these characters — who they are, what they do, how they behave and what they talk about — and argue that they are essential for understanding Bergman’s aesthetics.

CCM Singer Awarded in Kentucky Bach Choir’s Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition

We are thrilled to share that CCM Master of Music student Rebecca Castillo won the Encouragement Award after participating in Kentucky Bach Coir’s Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition on Saturday, April 9.

Nine student singers from six different states and nine universities competed in the live vocal competition, held at the First Presbyterian Church in Lexington. The singers competed for a Grand Prize of $1,500, an Audience Choice Award of $750, and two Encouragement Awards. As a recipient of the Encouragement Award, Castillo was given $500 and the opportunity to return as a paid guest soloist in future Kentucky Bach choir concerts.

The Grand Prize winner was Emily Yocum Black, who is pursuing a Master’s in Vocal Performance at the University of Louisville. The Audience Choice Award went to Zackery Morris, who is in pursuit of a Doctor of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at the University of Kentucky. Julius Cruse Miller III, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance at Indiana University, won the other Encouragement Award.

Castillo is a soprano studying under the tutelage of Amy Johnson, assistant professor of voice, as part of the Master of Music program at CCM. She recently performed in the ensemble of CCM’s production of Leos Janacek’s The Cunning Little Vixen. Last fall, Castillo performed J. S. Bach’s B Minor Mass with Cincinnati’s Vocal Arts Ensemble under the direction of Craig Hella Johnson.

She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a Bachelor of Music Education and previously taught choir at South Houston High School. While there, she performed with Houston’s Bach Society Choir including works B Minor Mass, St. Matthew’s Passion and Magnificat.

About the Audrey Rooney Vocal Competition
In its sixth year, the vocal competition was created to encourage exceptional student singers in the study of the solo repertoire of J. S. Bach, Franz Joseph Haydn, and W. A. Mozart. Singers are selected for the live competition in Lexington by submitting recordings to Kentucky Bach Choir Artistic Director, Marlon Hurst. The competition was adjudicated by Hurst, Associate Professor of Voice and Director of Opera at the University of Alamaba Dr. Krintine Hurst-Wajszczuk, and Zach Klobnak, director of music at The Presbyterian Church in Danville, Centre College organist and instructor of organ, harpsichord, and piano. Klobnak also serves as the accompanist for the Kentucky Bach Choir. All singers in the competition were accompanied by Nan McSwain, vocal coach and lecturer in opera with the University of Kentucky Opera Theater.

Ms. Audrey Heyman Rooney became the sponsor of the competition in 2013. A member of the Kentucky Bach Choir Board of Directors, Ms. Rooney has been a longtime advocate for the arts and for the encouragement of young artists, making significant contributions towards these ends in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland and Kentucky.

  • CCM welcomes the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band’s “Forscom Four” Clarinet Quartet for a free performance in Mary Emery Hall room 3250 (the “master class room”) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
  • Guest speaker Brian Kane’s Thinking About Music Lecture on Friday, March 11, has been canceled.
  • CCM welcomes the U.S. Army Band’s “Pershing’s Own” Woodwind Quintet for a free performance in Watson Hall at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16.

CCM Performances Make Critics’ “Best of 2014” Lists

In case you missed it, Music for All Seasons Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Enquirer and Music in Cincinnati have each published “year in review” stories, looking back on the great performances of 2014.

Rafael de Acha selected 10 special performances from 2014 for Music for All Seasons Cincinnati, including:

  • Professor Emeritus Frank Weinstock‘s return to the CCM stage as part of the 2014 Bearcat Piano Festival;
  • Guest artist Andreas Scholl‘s all-Lieder recital at CCM;
  • CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Les Misérables, which “won them a fine judgment from judicious lovers of the musical,” according to de Acha;
  • CCM’s Studio Series production of Chabrier’s L’ étoile;

CCM Performances and Collaborations Highlighted on Several “Best of 2013” Lists


As we ring in a new year, several local arts writers have released their “year in review” lists for 2013. Rafael de Acha, Mary Ellyn Hutton, Kirk Sheppard, Rick Pender and Janelle Gelfand help us take a look back at the year that was:

In his “best of” roundup for Music for All Seasons, Rafael de Acha commented, “(CCM) consistently achieves professional level in its numerous productions of operas, musicals and concerts which approached the four-digit mark this past year.” Last spring’s original production of Into a Lamplit Room: The Songs of Kurt Weill and the recent concert production of Verdi’s Don Carlos, along with CCM’s Mainstage Series productions of Singin’ in the Rain and Owen Wingrave, all received special mention in de Acha’s review.

Mary Ellyn Hutton presented her top 16 performances for Music in Cincinnati, which included three CCM productions: Verdi’s Don Carlos, Bach’s St. John Passion and Britten’s Owen Wingrave. Of Verdi’s Don Carlos, Hutton commented, “This gets my vote as perhaps the single finest concert of 2013 in Cincinnati.”

Compiled for The Snappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard‘s list of favorite theatre productions of 2013 included last spring’s Mainstage production of The Threepenny Opera and the Studio production of Parade produced in collaboration with the Carnegie in Covington. This past fall’s CCM productions of Carrie and Singin’ in the Rain also made Sheppard’s list.

Rick Pender included two CCM productions in his 2013 round up of theatre in Cincinnati for CityBeat. Last spring’s co-production of Parade with the Carnegie and the recent Mainstage production of Singin’ in the Rain received special attention.

Janelle Gelfand also included CCM’s massive concert production of Don Carlos in her list of “Top 13 Classical Music Shows in 2013” for the Cincinnati Enquirer. In addition to her performance-specific list, she published a summary of “arts highlights” for the year, which included the work of the MYCincinnati after-school program in East Price Hill (learn more about CCM’s connection to the organization here) and the new partnership between Cincinnati’s World Piano Competition, the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and CCM.

CCM and Constella Festival Present Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’ This Sunday


The Cincinnati Enquirer has named CCM’s Sunday, Nov. 3, staging of J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion as its “top pick for the weekend!”

According to the preview, “it should be one of the most moving events of the entire fall season.” Tickets are still available for this unique staged performance at Cincinnati’s Christ Church Cathedral.
