In an official proclamation, Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley has declared Oct. 20, 2018, as “CCM Musical Theatre Day” in honor of the program’s 50th anniversary.

The City of Cincinnati has officially declared Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018, as “CCM Musical Theatre Day” in honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s legendary BFA program in musical theatre!

CCM commemorates this milestone with a special gala performance of Guys and Dolls on the evening of Oct. 20. Arts lovers are invited to get “all dolled up” for a 7-9:30 p.m. performance of the Broadway classic in CCM’s newly-renovated Corbett Auditorium and then enjoy the Guys and Dolls-themed “Saints and Sinners Bash” afterparty in the Great Hall of UC’s Tangeman University Center!

CCM celebrates the 50th anniversary of its legendary BFA program in Musical Theatre with a special gala event on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2018. Arts lovers are invited to show their saintly support and have a sinfully good time during an evening that includes a lavish production of the classic Broadway musical Guys and Dolls followed by CCM’s Saints and Sinners Bash after party. Ticket proceeds support scholarships, student travel funds and master class opportunities.

The Musical Theatre program at CCM is the oldest in the country and was the first of its kind. A four-year bachelor of fine arts (BFA) program, it was used by the National Association of Schools of Theatre in formulating the guidelines for the accreditation of Musical Theatre programs nationwide. CCM Musical Theatre is widely recognized for its “ triple-threat” approach to training and many of its graduates are following careers as performers and creative artists in every facet of the entertainment industry.

After the performance of Guys and Dolls, attendees will be escorted to the Great Hall of UC’s Tangeman University Center for the Guys and Dolls-themed Saints and Sinners Bash. Guests can unwind in the Sinners Lounge, dance to music provided by the CCM Jazz Band and enjoy specialty drinks. Jeff Thomas Catering will provide themed food stations at the event, which also features a Graeter’s Ice Cream “Saints and Sinners” sundae bar.

The Saints and Sinners Bash will also celebrate the incredible history of CCM’s Musical Theatre program. CCM conferred the United States’ first BFA in Musical Theatre to Pamela Myers in 1969. Shortly after graduating, Myers received a Tony nomination in the category of Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her breakout role as Marta in Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway musical Company. Fifty years later, CCM Musical Theatre graduates continue to work on Broadway and throughout the nation in such productions as Anastasia, Hamilton, Waitress, The Book of Mormon, Pippin, Wicked, Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Kinky Boots, Big Fish, Newsies and The Lion King. During the 2017-18 season, CCM again took the #2 spot in Playbill Magazine’s list of “10 Most Represented Colleges on Broadway,” coming behind only New York University. Graduates also represent CCM in national and international touring productions, in dinner theatres and theme parks, on cruise ships, on television, in talent agencies, as producers and in many of the related entertainment fields.

Attendees are invited to get “all dolled up” in 1940s attire for a fun-filled night out benefiting CCM’s student “stars of tomorrow.” The entire evening is hosted by CCMpower, a dedicated volunteer group comprised of fans, advocates and alumni. The funds raised by this event enable CCMpower to “fuel the future of the arts” by awarding student scholarships and grants. CCMpower is presenting Guys and Dolls and the Saints and Sinners Bash in lieu of CCM’s popular Moveable Feast gala fundraiser. Moveable Feast will return to CCM in January 2020.

The Saints and Sinners Bash is chaired by Heather Vecellio, with Dianne Dunkelman serving as honorary chair. The fundraiser will be the first event held during the tenure of new CCMpower President Arlene Katz. The gala fundraiser also celebrates the arrival of new CCM Dean Stanley Romanstein, whose tenure officially began on July 1, 2018.

Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. The thrilling highlight of the evening is Birthday Variations, set to music by Giuseppe Verdi and staged by guest artist Nicole Duffy Robertson, a répétiteur for the Gerald Arpino Foundation. The performance of Birthday Variations, an Arpino ballet, is presented with the permission of the Gerald Arpino Foundation and has been produced in accordance with the Foundation service standards established and provided by the Foundation.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame begins as bells sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools, but he is held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. He escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though — the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. The musical premiered as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame in 1999 in Berlin.

Mozart’s last opera seria displays some of his most memorable and marvelous arias! The story centers on Roman emperor Titus (Tito) who must choose a wife, but is unable to find a suitable match. In his search for an empress, Tito narrowly avoids an assassination plot instigated by his protégé Sesto and the former emperor’s daughter, Vitellia, who wants the throne for herself. Caught between his duty and his heart, the emperor must choose whether to rule with mercy or with an iron fist.

Celebrate spring’s arrival with a fully staged fairytale ballet choreographed by guest artist Karen Russo Burke, Artistic Director of the Dayton Ballet. A poor girl wishes to escape the authoritarian rule of her evil stepmother and stepsisters, so her fairy godmother gives her a ticket to the ball! The girl meets Prince Charming and they fall in love, but she vanishes when the clock strikes midnight. Set to music by Sergei Prokofiev, Cinderella is known for its jubilant melodies, lush scenery and graceful retelling of the timeless romance by Charles Perrault.

CCM Alumna Faith Prince Opens Memorial Hall’s Signature Event Series on Nov. 14

Distinguished CCM alumna Faith Prince.

Cincinnati Memorial Hall‘s Signature Series of events will kick off on Friday, Nov. 14, with an evening of Broadway hits performed by Tony Award-winner and distinguished CCM alumna Faith Prince (BM Musical Theatre, 1979; HonDoc, 2009).

Prince, whose career includes Adelaid in Guys and Dolls with Nathan Lane, Ursula in Broadway’s The Little Mermaid and Miss Hannigan in the recent revival of Annie will perform at 8 p.m., following a 6:30 p.m. reception.

The pre-performance reception will including a sampling of Heidelberg wines from the Bordeaux region of France and lire-bites courtesy of A Catered Affair and Elegant Fare, with desserts by Eatwell.

About Faith Prince
After Faith Prince graduated as “Most Talented” with her bachelor’s degree from CCM’s Musical Theatre program in 1979, she began a career on stage that continues to see her star rise. Perhaps best known for her award-winning performance as Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, which earned her a Tony Award, Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award in 1992, Prince was nominated for the same awards for her performance in A Catered Affair on Broadway in 2008. Other award-nominated performances on Broadway include Bells are Ringing (2001), Jerome Robbins’ B’way (1989) and Nick and Nora (1991).

Besides her stage performances, the Lynchburg, Va., native has had a number of film and television roles, including appearances on primetime hits Grey’s Anatomy and Spin City. Musical accomplishments include concert performances, Tony awards and a CD.

In June 2009, Prince received an honorary doctor of performing arts and addressed UC’s graduating students as commencement speaker. She offered career advice, touching on the temporary nature ofher field and of life in general, reminding graduates that just like them, come Monday, she’d be looking for her next job, too.

CCM Alumnus Josh Prince Nominated for Astaire Award

CCM alumnus Josh Prince (BFA, 1996).

We are happy to report that CCM alumnus Josh Prince (BFA, 1996) has been nominated for a Fred and Adele Astaire Award in the category of Outstanding Choreographer for a Broadway Show for his work on the new musical Beautiful: The Carol King Musical. This prestigious award honors excellence in dance and choreography on Broadway and in film.

Prince is the latest in a long line of CCM alumni who have been both nominees and winners of this award:

• In 2002, Justin Bohon (Class of 2000) won the award as Outstanding Male Dancer for his performance as Will Parker in Oklahoma!
• In 2008, Karen Olivo (Class of 1997) received the award for In the Heights followed by a nomination for her performance as Anita in West Side Story in 2009.
• Also in 2009, Kearran Giovanni (Class of 2003) received a nomination for her performance in the revival of Guys and Dolls.
• In 2010, Savannah Wise (Class of 2006) received a nomination for her work in Ragtime.
• In 2012, Ryan Breslin (Class of 2011) was nominated as Outstanding Male Dancer in a Broadway Show for his work in Newsies.

The 32nd annual Astaire Awards will be presented on June 2 at New York University’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts.
