CCM Welcomes Alumnus Jordan Dodson in Performance of New Work for Guitar and Winds

CCM continues its sesquicentennial Winds Series with a special guest appearance by Jordan Dodson (BM Guitar, 2009), who will appear alongside the CCM Chamber Players in a performance of Stephen Goss’ A Concerto of Colours, which debuted earlier this year. The free concert will take place at 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 4, 2018 in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

This new work for guitar and wind ensemble was co-commissioned by CCM and eleven other schools, which are Arizona State University, Columbus State University, Illinois State University, University of Kentucky, University of Louisville, University of Miami (Florida), University of Missouri at Kansas City, the University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music, University of Southern California, University of Texas at Austin and University of Washington at Seattle. The idea for commissioning the work came from Andrew Zohn and Jamie Nix at Columbus State University, whose school premiered the work in September.

Goss chose the colors for his Concerto of Colours after being inspired by the vivid landscapes and cultures of the American Southwest. The movements are short, dramatically contrasting, and, of course, are each named for a color: “Albuquerque Turquoise,” “Still Black,” “Green Movement,” “Nocturne in Blue and Gold” and “Red Rocks.”

This free performance will also include Arthur Bird’s Serenade for Wind Instruments, Ravel’s Introduction et Allegro and Steven Stucky’s Partita-Pastorale after J.S. Bach.

About Jordan Dodson
Jordan Dodson is an active soloist and chamber musician based in New York and Philadelphia. In 2013, he was the winner of Astral’s National Auditions, as well as a Young Artist-in-Residence on American Public Media’s Performance Today. He has performed at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts and the Museo Nacional de Colombia, as well as with the Kingston Chamber Music Festival, Aspen Music Festival and the Festival Daniou in France. He performs in several New York City chamber ensembles, including Ensemble Moto Perpetuo, Marcel and Ensemble sans maître. He recently collaborated with such acclaimed artists as the International Contemporary Ensemble, Anne-Marie McDermott, Ransom Wilson and Contemporaneous. He can be heard on the album Subject on Tzadik Records.

About Stephen Goss
Welsh composer and guitarist Stephen Goss has won the praise of many artists, most notably John Williams, and his catalog is already substantial. Goss studied guitar at the Royal Academy of Music and won its Julian Bream Prize in 1986, and he has collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber, the Orpheus Sinfonia, Peter Maxwell Davies, Toru Takemitsu, the Tetra Guitar Quartet, Paco Peña, the Bournemouth Sinfonietta and the English Sinfonia, among others. His Albéniz “Concerto” for guitar and orchestra was released on EMI Classics in 2010.

Guitarist Oscar Ghiglia Returns to CCM on Oct. 8

Legendary classical guitarist Oscar Ghiglia celebrates his 43rd annual residency as a CCM Guest Artist with a solo recital of his concert favorites this Sunday, Oct. 8. The concert begins at 4 p.m. in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the general public.

Guitarists at CCM have been the enthusiastic beneficiaries of Ghiglia’s concerts and master classes since 1974. He is a major and, perhaps, most persuasive champion of Andrés Segovia-inspired European guitar playing.

About Oscar Ghiglia

Oscar Ghiglia was born in Livorno, Italy, to a pianist mother and a painter father. While attending Rome’s Santa Cecilia Conservatory, he participated in guitarist Andrés Segovia’s summer master classes in Siena and Santiago de Compostela. Following his graduation in 1962, he performed in several internationally recognized competitions, earning the following awards: first prize in the Orense Guitar Competition, first prize in the Santiago de Compostela Guitar Competition and first prize in the Radio France International Guitar Competition.

In 1964, Andrés Segovia invited Ghiglia to be his assistant in master classes in California. Since then, Ghiglia has given concerts and master classes throughout the world. In addition to appearing extensively in all parts of North and South America and Europe, he is a frequent performer in East Asia, Israel, Argentina, New Zealand and the South Pacific, and has recorded for Angel, Nonesuch and Stradivarius Records. While enjoying an active performing career, Ghiglia has always favored teaching as a sister-profession. Through masterclasses and private lessons, Ghiglia has taught almost every well-known guitarist today.

Ghiglia is currently professor emeritus of guitar at the Basel Music-Akademie and gives summer courses in Europe, America and the Middle East. He established the classical guitar summer program at Aspen, Colorado, and taught there for twenty years. He now regularly gives summer classes at the Festival d’Arc in southern France, at the Chigi Academy in Siena, Italy and at the Festival Gargnano, Italy. The Hartt School of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2004 for his outstanding contributions to classical guitar teaching and performance. In 2009, the Guitar Foundation of America presented him with their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.

Student Compositions Showcased in CCM’s “A View from the Edge” Recital

The University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music offers a few recitals each semester called “A View from the Edge.” These free concerts showcase original works of student composers and give audiences a look over the precipice of current compositional techniques.

The first of this season’s student composition recitals is at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. The concert program includes a set of three songs for soprano and piano inspired by the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead, a freshman composer’s first piano sonata and How I Lost My Voice, a piece for flute and guitar that a student wrote in response to the Nov. 13, 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris.

Daniel Harrison, a third-year doctoral candidate studying music composition, is one of the student coordinators for this installment of “A View from the Edge.” CCM graduate student Alexandra Doyle got in touch with Harrison to get a preview of the upcoming recital.

Can you tell me a bit about “A View from the Edge” and the goals of these recitals?
The “View From The Edge” series was created as a way to showcase the newest compositions from the students in the CCM composition studio. At these concerts, you will hear premieres of chamber music, which range from solos to small ensembles and occasionally works that incorporate electronics. One of the outstanding characteristics of our composition studio is how diverse all of our compositional voices are; everyone has something different to say and their own way of saying it.

What’s it like to work with student performers to hone your pieces? Have you found that you make a significant amount of changes after rehearsals have begun?
Working with other students is great! I love it when there is a sense that we, as a team, are collaborating together to create an experience for a concert-goer. As a composer, I view my role in this as only a third of the equation; the audience and performer make up the other two thirds. I have gotten advice from performers that has led to some significant revisions, both in terms of idiomatic treatment of the instruments and notional choices.

Which three pieces on the program stand out to you, and why?
One of the three pieces on the concert that I’m really looking forward to hearing is Phillip Robert‘s Her em Iteru, which is a set of three songs for soprano and piano based on texts found in the ancient Egyptian Book of the Dead. Another is our incoming freshman composer Maksym Mahlay‘s first piano sonata, which looks like a fiery and virtuosic piece for solo piano. It’s also worth noting that the composer himself will be performing the piece. Lastly, my piece for flute and guitar, How I Lost My Voice, will be premiered at the recital. This piece attempts to capture the feeling of not being able to express oneself vocally and contains extended techniques in the flute and guitar that give the illusion of a voice becoming hoarse and transparent.

Did a personal experience inspire your work, How I Lost My Voice?
While I was composing this piece, the Nov. 13, 2015 Paris attacks occurred. After the initial shock, I vividly recall feeling this wave of absolute hopelessness. What could I do? As someone whose profession is to write music, in a country thousands of miles away and separated from France by an ocean, ‘not much’ is as a gross understatement. This event radically refocused my perspective and reframed the project I was working on for a reading session, which was a simple, short piece for flute and guitar.

I began asking what purpose music served in response to tragedy. I imagined that even if I screamed until I lost my voice, there was nothing that I could do to undo what happened. My only recourse was to respond through music well after the fact.

What should people who haven’t experienced much new music expect if they come to “A View from the Edge”?
I would come in to these concerts with an open mind. Our composition studio is filled with students who have different aesthetics. No two recitals will offer the same sounds. One bit of advice that I would offer to someone who is looking to experience a new music concert for the first time is to listen to the music in the same way one would taste a new dish­ – just be open to the experience!

The first “A View from the Edge” recital is at 8 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 26 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Composition students will have another opportunity to showcase their new works in the second concert at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 31 in Patricia Corbett Theater.

CCM Alumnus Brad Myers Releases New Album To 4-Star Review From Famed Jazz Magazine

We are thrilled to report that the new album from guitarist and CCM alumnus Brad Myers (MM Jazz Studies, 2015) has been recognized by the famed jazz magazine DownBeat as one of the best albums of the year!

Myers’ album Prime Numbers will be among the new releases honored in the magazine’s January 2016 edition. This is the first album on which Meyers serves as lead member. The album also features the talents of fellow CCM Jazz Studies alums Tom Buckley, Peter Gemus, Ben Walkenhauer, Dominic Marino, Michael Mavridoglou and Brian Schwab!

Myers and Prime Numbers receive this honor after writer Bill Milkowski gave the album four out of five stars in a DownBeat review earlier this year. Milowski lauds Myers for his “old-school soulfulness, a highly syncopated sense of comping and a relaxed sense of swing on his long-overdue debut as a leader;” he furthermore compliments Myers and his group for “[marrying] modernist ideas with a straightahead [sic] sound.”

The adulation afforded Myers is appropriate considering his lengthy career. A musician since he was six years old, the guitarist spent the previous 20 years working as a sideman and co-director with various jazz groups and ensembles around his hometown of Washington, D.C. and Cincinnati. He made a name for himself performing with local acts such as Ray’s Music Exchange, Aja (a Steely Dan tribute ensemble), Jeremy Pinnell & the 55s, and Savoy Truffle among others. He has also had the fortune to share the stage with many internationally known performers including Bela Fleck, John Scofield, Stanley Jordan, Victor Wooten and Matt Wilson.

CCM’s Jazz Ensembles present their last jazz concert of the season, “In Search of Garaj Mahal, with Scott Belck and Dominic Marino as music directors and conductors at 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, in Corbett Auditorium.

Jazz lovers don’t want to miss this unique concert as CCM Jazz students, faculty and alumni perform new big band arrangements of guest artist and guitar virtuoso Fareed Haque’s original music, with Haque himself joining CCM Jazz Ensembles on stage.

Haque’s unique style has led to collaborations with Arturo Sandoval, Sting, Keller Williams and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, just to name a few!
