CCM’s famed Faculty Jazztet.

CCM’s esteemed faculty artists take center stage during seven diverse performances this spring! Running from Jan. 8 through Feb. 13, 2018, these programs highlight music from multiple genres, from classical styles and musical theatre to jazz and beyond.

Each concert in CCM’s Faculty Artist Series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by internationally renowned artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM Announces Spring 2018 Calendar of Major Events

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music proudly presents more than 100 major public performances, lectures and showcases this spring as part of its Sesquicentennial Celebration. Presented from Jan. 8 through May, 5, 2018, CCM’s lineup of major events includes faculty and guest artist recitals, fully supported theatrical productions, choral and orchestra concerts and more in CCM’s newly-renovated performance venues!

CCM’s 150^th Anniversary Season reaches its peak this spring with three celebrations. Sample an array of artistic offerings from musical theatre to jazz and electronic media at the college’s annual Moveable Feast benefit event on Jan. 19, 2018. This year’s event features CCM alumnus Brian Newman, who will headline Moveable Feast’s Blue-Note After Party. On Feb. 18, 2018, CCM celebrates alumni couples that met at UC with Con Amore: From CCM with Love. The celebration concludes with the Sesquicentennial Alumni Showcase on April 21, 2018, which features famed CCM alumni performing alongside our “stars of tomorrow.”

In January, CCM kicks off a yearlong celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s music and career. Leonard Bernstein at 100 is a worldwide celebration of his monumental career as a composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador and humanitarian. CCM’s Bernstein Festival includes such classics as the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story, the Symphonic Suite from On the Waterfront, the masterful Second Symphony, Stan Kenton’s West Side Story and more. Audiences interested in the complete festival experience can purchase CCM’s “Bernstein Experience” package, giving them access to every ticketed concert in CCM’s Bernstein Festival at a savings of over 20% off single ticket prices. What’s the buzz? CCM presents the first hit by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice! A timeless work, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. The rock opera is based on the last week of Jesus’ life. Set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally known series of events, the story is told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. A true global phenomenon, the iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.”

TRANSMIGRATION, so named for “the movement from one place to another” or “the transition from one state of being to another,” is a festival of new works created by the students in CCM Acting. Six teams of actors craft and perform six original 30-minute plays. Performed simultaneously in different locations throughout CCM Village, this 10th Anniversary Edition of TRANSMIGRATION will allow the audience to sample four different new works of their choosing in one spectacular evening.

Funded by a grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a public reading of a new, original work! Hadrian is an opera by American-Canadian singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright, scheduled to premiere in 2018 by Toronto’s Canadian Opera Company. It is based on the life of Hadrian (76-138 AD), who was Roman emperor from 117 to 138. The performance is followed by a talk-back with the composer and co-artistic directors.

Celebrate spring’s arrival with the CCM Ballet Ensemble as it presents an exciting mixed bill accompanied by CCM’s Concert Orchestra. The program includes one of the most celebrated excerpts in all classical ballets, “The Kingdom of the Shades” from La Bayadére with music by Ludwig Minkus. In addition, guest artist Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba will restage José Limón’s masterwork A Choreographic Offering set to music by J.S. Bach. The program’s rousing finale features The Sleeping Beauty (Act III), after Marius Petipa’s classical ballet with music by Tchaikovsky. CCM Mainstage Dance Presents ‘The Art of Motion’

The mixed-repertoire dance concert features The Little Mermaid, Paquita and John Adams’ Shaker Loops.

CCM’s fall Mainstage Series comes to a stunning conclusion with “The Art of Motion,” a concert of mixed repertoire presented by the Dance Department. Co-directed by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi and Associate Professor of Dance Deirdre Carberry, the production runs from Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017, through Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017, in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

The program begins with featured work The Little Mermaid, which is choreographed by guest artist Adam Sage with music by Léo Delibes and Antonín Dvorák. This classic fairytale, written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen, is about the lengths in which a young mermaid will go for love.

The concert also showcases Paquita with music by Ludwig Minkus, restaged by Deirdre Carberry to choreography by Marius Petipa. Set in Spain during the occupation by Napoleon’s army, the ballet follows the story of a young gypsy girl who saves the life of a French officer and falls in love with him.

The performance concludes with Shaker Loops by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Adams, featuring original choreography by CCM Dance Professor André Megerdichian. CCM’s Café MoMus Ensemble performs the work under the direction of CCM student Alexandria Black. Shaker Loops includes an illuminated collaboration with UC DAAP faculty member Henry Hildebrandt, the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs in the School of Architecture and Interior Design.

CCM Celebrates 150th Anniversary With Must-See Mainstage Series

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) marks the 150th anniversary of its founding with a year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration beginning in the fall of 2017. Commemorating a tradition of innovation and excellence dating back to the founding of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1867, CCM’s Sesquicentennial programming includes eight must-see masterworks presented as part of the 2017-18 Mainstage Series.

Between Sept. 27, 2017, and April 14, 2018, CCM’s stars of tomorrow and world-class faculty and staff members will stage eight diverse productions. This year’s Mainstage Series includes cherished classics like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide and Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

CCM’s Sesquicentennial lineup also includes an opera double-bill featuring Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica, two mixed-repertoire ballet productions and the Mainstage Series debuts of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens’ Seussical and Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information.

The Mainstage Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which will also include world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. Set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events, the story is told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. A true global phenomenon, the iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.”

Celebrate spring’s arrival with the CCM Ballet Ensemble as they present an exciting mixed bill accompanied by the CCM Concert Orchestra. The program includes one of the most celebrated excerpts in all classical ballets, “The Kingdom of the Shades” from La Bayadére, staged by CCM faculty member Deirdre Carberry with music by Ludwig Minkus. In addition, guest artist Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba will restage José Limón’s masterful A Choreographic Offering set to music by J. S. Bach. The program’s rousing finale features The Sleeping Beauty (Act III), after Marius Petipa’s classical ballet with music by Tchaikovsky.

CCM Sesquicentennial Performances and Concert Series Options
CCM will present additional special events and public performances celebrating its Sesquicentennial throughout the 2017-18 concert season. As the largest single source of performing arts events in Ohio, CCM will also present its typical lineup of chamber music, choral, jazz, orchestra, percussion, piano and wind ensemble concerts each season.

Beginning in January of 2018, the CCM Sesquicentennial will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial with a collection of performances by students and faculty artists from throughout the college. Subscribers get first access to the Leonard Bernstein Experience, which includes concerts and special events held in the spring and fall of 2018 as part of a world-wide celebration of Bernstein’s 100th birthday.

Rebecca Lenkiewicz’s Her Naked Skin explores a crucial moment in the Suffragette Movement when thousands of women were sent to Holloway Prison after demanding equal rights. Political battles collide with personal struggles when Celia Cain, trapped by the policies of the day and a frustrating marriage, begins an affair with seamstress Eve Douglass while they are imprisoned.

This production contains adult themes and situations, including brief nudity, and is intended for mature audiences.

CCM’s Winds Series Presents Masterworks, A World Premiere And More This Semester

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies kicks off a diverse series of spring semester performances on Thursday, Feb. 16. Under the direction of Terence Milligan and Angela Holt, the CCM Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble perform a concert of masterworks, featuring iconic pieces by Ralph Vaughn Williams, Leonard Bernstein, Aaron Copland and William Schuman.

The series continues on March 1 with the world premiere of the Concerto for Percussion and Wind Orchestra by award-winning Colombian composer Federico Garcia-de Castro. Featuring the CCM Wind Orchestra with guest percussionist Carlos Camacho, the program includes works by Richard Strauss, Gioachino Rossini, Felix Mendelssohn and Florent Scmitt.

On April 6, audiences can listen to CCM’s Wind Ensemble play the sounds of spring in a free concert at the Covenant-First Presbyterian Church, located Downtown. CCM Musical Theatre students join the Wind Orchestra for its final concert on April 12, featuring music for dancing, marching and singing. Feel free to tap your feet and hum along!

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music presents a packed performance schedule this weekend with the Mainstage production of A Chorus Line, the Studio Acting performances of Middletown and a guest artist concert from the United States Air Force Band. Parade Route Street Closings

• Calhoun Street, between Vine Street and Clifton Avenue, will close at 2 p.m.
• Clifton Avenue, between McMillan Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, will close at 2:30 p.m.
• Eastbound traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, between Clifton Avenue and Woodside Drive, will be restricted prior to the start of the parade. The eastbound right-hand lane (the lane closest to campus) will be closed; the middle and left-hand lanes will remain open. Westbound traffic will remain unaffected.

Entry into the Clifton Court, Woodside and Calhoun parking garages will be prohibited starting at 2 p.m. on Saturday. All parking and regular driving routes will be reinstated near the Homecoming parade’s anticipated end by approximately 4:30 p.m.

CCM Preparatory Hosts Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Recital Oct. 30

Music students in the Preparatory and Community Engagement Department at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music will perform in a benefit recital for the Gino James DiMario Memorial Scholarship at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

The scholarship fund is in honor of Gino DiMario, a second-grade student in the CCM Preparatory program who tragically and unexpectedly passed away in 2005. He was involved at CCM Preparatory and the Junior Music Experience for several years, and he had already performed in several recitals and competitions.

His memorial scholarship gives other preparatory students the opportunity to experience one of Gino’s favorite things — music.

To apply for the scholarship, students must complete a rigorous application process called the DiMario Scholars Program, which includes community service, three public performances, a concert review, an essay and two evaluations by a CCM Preparatory faculty member. Scholarship winners are chosen by the music advisory cabinet, CCM Preparatory staff and Gino’s parents, Michael and Sharron DiMario, on the basis of teacher evaluations, enthusiasm for and commitment to musical studies and participation in wider experiences, such as community service.

Recipients of the scholarship for the current year are encouraged to perform in the annual scholarship recital. Students are not eligible to receive the scholarship more than once, so they will be raising funds for future recipients through this recital. The performance will feature CCM Preparatory guitarists, oboe players, pianists, violinists and singers.

Including the current recipients, 51 young musicians have received the Gino James DiMario Memorial Scholarship, which amounts to a total of approximately $15,000 over the program’s 11 years.

CCM Prep offers private music lessons and music theory classes to children and adults seeking to receive foundational training in music. The preparatory department also offers lessons and classes in dance and theatre arts.

World Premiere of CCM’s “They Were You” Gets Rave Reviews

Critics praised CCM’s world premiere of They Were You, a musical revue of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt songs, which ran Oct. 5-9 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg, the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM, They Were You featured musical arrangements by CCM faculty member Stephen Goers and choreography by alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012).

In his review for The Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard called CCM’s They Were You “a magical night of theater.” He praised Berg’s direction, the “excellent” cast, Johannigman’s “fun, logical” choreography and Goers’ “beyond beautiful” musical arrangements. 

“There’s no need to single out any one of the six outrageously gifted young artists in the cast,” said Rafael de Acha in his review of the production on Rafael’s Music Notes. “Let me merely give you their names and entreat you to make mental note of them, with the assurance that, sooner than you think, you will be hearing these names: Gabe Wrobel, Emily Fink, Stavros Koumbaros, Aria Brasswell, Karl Amundsen and Michelle Coben.”

Teddy Gumbleton of the League of Cincinnati Theatres wrote that each of the six student performers sang “like a dream, navigating the lush harmonies and infusing each song with the necessary depth and wit. Together they work flawlessly as an ensemble, infusing the rich music with tremendous character.”

In a review for Talkin’ Broadway, Scott Cain said CCM’s Jones and Schmidt revue “revealed a thoughtful, varied and pleasant journey through pair’s exemplary work, and showcased some fine performances and design.” Cain praised the production’s “beautiful, night-sky mural” backdrop designed by CCM faculty member Thomas Umfrid. He also proposed that They Were You “will hopefully be licensed and made available for other theater companies to perform.”

CCM Presents Broadway Hit ‘A Chorus Line’ Oct. 20-30

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music’s Mainstage Series continues with nine-time Tony award-winning musical, A Chorus Line. Directed and choreographed by Diane Lala with musical direction from Roger Grodsky, A Chorus Line runs Oct. 20–30 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

Centered around Broadway dancers as they audition for roles in the next smash hit, A Chorus Line offers a candid look at the backstage world of musical theatre.  Director and choreographer Diane Lala and musical director Roger Grodsky stay true to the show’s origins by setting it in the 1970s, when A Chorus Line was written.

“This show is very special to performers, theatre dancers especially,” says Lala, CCM professor of Musical Theatre. “Everyone wants to know what it feels like to get to that moment in the finale that everyone has been waiting for and sing ‘One’ as the lights pulse and the audience goes crazy. There is nothing better.”

The original director and choreographer of A Chorus Line, Michael Bennett, wanted to create a show about so-called Broadway “gypsies” who constantly move from show to show to audition for new productions. Bennett brought some of these migrant performers together to discuss their experiences, both in and out of show business, and recorded the sessions. This dialogue became A Chorus Line, with part of the script pulled directly from the recordings. Some of the interviewed performers joined the musical’s original cast to play themselves on Broadway.

“By the end of the show, the audience feels as though they have really gotten to know the dancers and roots for them to succeed,” says Grodsky, CCM professor of Musical Theatre. “The illusion that the audience was watching an actual audition taking place was reinforced in the original production by the orchestra being invisible. This was one of the first shows that completely covered the orchestra pit.”

A Chorus Line focuses on the experiences and perspectives of musical theatre performers, but Lala says the show has universal appeal for non-performers as well.

“It is really a universal quest, right?” she suggests. “People in ‘regular’ jobs also are just looking for work, and some are hoping for that next promotion or to be stars in their own profession. This show puts that desire, struggle, hope, success and disappointment out there for the audience to see. I think that is why this is such a powerful show. People feel and can instantly associate with the characters onstage.

“If you are someone with a love for it,” she continues, “everything you go through is worth it to get to stand up there and do what you have trained your whole life for.”

James Kirkwood, Jr. and Nicholas Dante wrote the book for A Chorus Line. The music is by Marvin Hamlisch, with lyrics by Edward Kleban. The show opens on Thursday, Oct. 20 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 30 at the College-Conservatory of Music’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now.
