CCM Announces Joe Miller as New Director of Choral Studies

UC College-Conservatory of Music Dean Stanley E. Romanstein has announced the addition of choral conductor Joe Miller, DMA, to the college’s roster of distinguished faculty members. A leading authority in the field of choral conducting, Miller is also a two-time graduate of CCM (MM, ‘92; DMA, ‘97). His appointment as professor and director of CCM’s lauded Choral Studies program begins on Aug. 15, 2020, pending approval of the University’s Board of Trustees.

Since 2006, Miller has served as conductor of two of the most renowned choral ensembles in the US: the Westminster Choir and the Westminster Symphonic Choir. He has also served as director of choral activities at Westminster Choir College of Rider University. In addition to his responsibilities at Westminster, Miller has been artistic director of choral activities for the renowned Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, South Carolina, since 2007. He has also served as conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra Symphonic Choir since 2016.

“CCM has a distinguished history of choral performance and conductor training, and our alumni occupy leadership positions throughout the world,” said Romanstein. “Joe Miller has worked with the world’s leading ensembles, conductors and artists and I am proud to welcome him back to CCM as a colleague. Joe has a firm grasp of the immense opportunities available to 21st century artists and he will serve as a worthy successor to our illustrious colleague Professor Earl Rivers, who retires this spring after a nearly 50-year tenure at CCM.”

Miller’s appointment concludes a national search that began when Earl Rivers, CCM’s long-time director of choral studies, announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2019-20 academic year. “I am grateful to our search committee chair Mark Gibson and committee members L. Brett Scott, Gwendolyn Coleman, Robyn Lana, Marie-France Lefebvreand Daniel Weeks for their work finding CCM’s next great ensembles and conducting professor,” said Romanstein.

Miller’s recent seasons leading the Westminster Choir have included concert tours in Beijing, China and in Spain, as well as participation in the World Symposium on Choral Music in Barcelona and groundbreaking performances of Julia Wolfe’s Pulitzer Prize winning Anthracite Fields at the historic Roebling WireWorks as part of Westminster’s Transforming Space project.

After viewing a staged performance of Joby Talbot’s demanding Path of Miracles at the 2019 Spoleto Festival USA, D.C. Theatre Scene wrote, “Joe Miller is a fearless artist. His bold leadership and trust in these young singers enabled his choristers to forego the ‘stand and deliver,’ score-bound habits of their genre and ‘walk with him’ on this special journey. Not only did the singers need to memorize their parts, no mean feat, but follow his baton’s bid from any part of the auditorium and sing in any body position. Miller constantly challenged them in the process and inspired them to work confidently, well outside their comfort zone.”

The New York Times described the Westminster Choir’s 2014 Festival performance of John Adams’ El Niño as “superb” and wrote, “Meticulously prepared … the chorus was remarkable for its precision, unanimity and power.” The Wall Street Journal praised the same performance, crediting “the fine Westminster Choir and the Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, under the direction of Joe Miller.” The Post and Courier wrote about their performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion, “This was an evening of near-flawless execution and many moments of ravishing beauty and power. It will go down as a highlight (maybe even THE highlight) of this year’s festival, and, I think, as the work with which Joe Miller established his credentials to lead an extended choral/orchestral masterwork, not just recreating Bach’s music but also putting his own interpretive stamp on the whole.”

Miller has made four recordings with the Westminster Choir. American Record Guide wrote about the choir’s newest CD, Frank Martin: Mass for Double Choir, “This is gorgeous singing … with perfect blend, intonation, diction, ensemble and musicality.” The Heart’s Reflection: Music of Daniel Elder was hailed by Minnesota Public Radio’s Classical Notes as “simply astounding.”  Miller’s debut recording with the ensemble, Flower of Beauty, received four stars from Choir & Organ magazine and earned critical praise from American Record Guide, which described the Westminster Choir as “the gold standard for academic choirs in America.”

As conductor of the Westminster Symphonic Choir, Miller has collaborated with some of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, earning him critical praise. The New York Timeswrote about Symphonic Choir’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with the Cleveland Orchestra, “Joe Miller’s Westminster Symphonic Choir was subtle when asked and powerful when turned loose.” Recent seasons have included performances with the Philharmoniker Berliner and Sir Simon Rattle; The Philadelphia Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin; and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela and Gustavo Dudamel.

Prior to his time at Westminster Choir College, Miller served on the faculty of Western Michigan University, California State University and Whitman College. He is the 2016 recipient of the Maynard Klein Award for Distinguished Service to Choral Music, which is presented by ACDA-Michigan in recognition of artistic excellence and a lifetime of leadership in the field of choral music.

Miller received his DMA in Choral Conducting with a cognate in Voice from CCM in 1997. He received his MM in Choral Conducting from CCM in 1992. In 1987, he graduated cum laude from the University of Tennessee with a BS in Music Education and Voice.

These members of the CCM family have dedicated themselves to continuing the college’s legacy as a leading training center for the performing and media arts:

Earl Rivers arrived at CCM as a DMA student in September 1970. During his first month at the college, he remembers joining other student conductors and the May Festival Chorus to welcome incoming Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Music Director Thomas Schippers with a performance of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem at Music Hall. He has since presented numerous choral masterworks with students at CCM and throughout Greater Cincinnati.

“My favorite memories at CCM include the staged productions we accomplished of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion, and of Honegger’s Joan of Arc at the Stake — all staged by talented student directors in CCM’s Opera Stage Directing Artist Diploma Program,” Rivers says. “These productions prepared CCM’s student singers, instrumentalists, conductors, and technical theatre majors to become leaders in the next generation of performers in staged productions of concert works and oratorios.”

After 31 years at CCM with nearly 150 costume design graduates and more than 300 supervised staged productions, Dean Mogle has too many memories to single out only a few. “The richness of student talent over the years has elevated all of us to new heights in training,” he says.

“I am most proud as our students take their rightful places in this country’s most prestigious theatre, opera and dance organizations, as well as Broadway, motion pictures and television productions,” Mogle adds. “Over the years, the incredibly dedicated professional staff and faculty have mentored each student toward their full potential and guided them into their chosen areas of this profession. Whether designing, assisting, managing, making or dressing, our students are admired by the profession for their talents, skills and dedication — hallmarks of CCM.”

Alan Siebert’s favorite memories of are watching students succeed, whether at a recital, conference or on stage. Over the years, he has celebrated students’ accomplishments near and far — in performances in Cincinnati as well as all over the world including Bangkok, Thailand.  He remembers trying to livestream a broadcast of students performing at the National Trumpet Competition in Texas when he and his wife were driving home from one of his own concerts. They pulled into the parking lot of a shopping center, sat in their car and watched the performance on his phone so they could cheer them on from afar.

“I also love performing with my former students,” adds Siebert, who recently reunited with former student Bryan Crisp (MM, ’05) to talk about his career on Crisp’s Music On Purpose podcast. “Whether it’s in a recital, orchestra or chamber music setting. It is always gratifying to see them years later and marvel at how well they have done, knowing that you had a small part in that development. I have had great colleagues and students at CCM and also many wonderful opportunities because of CCM.”

Mark Williams is the instructor and coordinator behind CCM’s annual BOOM! lighting showcase, a dazzling stage lighting and technical production display by students in his Moving Light Programming course. The event inspired the “Light Their Way” theme at CCM’s 2020 Moveable Feast fundraiser.

Former student Oliver Littleton (BFA, ’19) remembers taking Williams’ Moving Light Programming course and how it challenged him to examine his design process and use lighting technology in new ways. “The training from Mark’s course is something I use all the time in my work now,” said Littleton, who began working as a lighting design intern at Walt Disney World during his final year at CCM.

A pianist, composer and arranger, Stephen Allee has spent more than 35 years working primarily as a jazz instructor as well as writing and performing for syndicated radio programs, network TV and motion pictures. Over the summer, he traveled with the CCM Jazz Orchestra to São Paulo, Brazil for an international residency with Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. CCM’s Department of Jazz Studies was named Jazz at Lincoln Center‘s inaugural College Affiliate, a distinction reserved for the country’s top-ranked jazz programs.

More recently, Allee worked with fellow CCM faculty member Rusty Burge and musicians Steve Houghton, Rob Dixon and Jeremy Allen to release BAHAD in January 2020. Allee wrote the title track of the record, which is available to stream online.

“My experience in the Jazz Studies Department at CCM has been nothing short of amazing,” Allee says. “Our students have grown by leaps and bounds, nurtured by the encouraging atmosphere in our department.”

Celebrate the Holidays with CCM’s Annual Feast of Carols

CCM ushers in the holidays on Saturday, Dec. 7 and Sunday, Dec. 8, 2019, with Feast of Carols, an annual concert featuring festive choral favorites performed by the CCM Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra; UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses, Cincinnati Youth Choir and outstanding guest choirs from local high schools.

A tradition that dates back more than 100 years, Feast of Carols showcases an eclectic mix of holiday songs including classics like Carol of the Bells, Angels We Have Heard on High, Joy to the World, Silent Night, and many more.

Conductors Earl Rivers, Brett Scott, Robyn Lana, Molly Getsinger, Matthew Coffey, Sarah J. Baker, Tracy Carpenter, Anthony Nims and Jeffrey Stern lead the choirs on stage and invite audience members to join in for “carol sings” throughout the performance.

The featured guest choir during the 2 p.m. concert on Saturday, Dec. 7 is the Walnut High School Senior Ensemble, Anthony Nims, director. Little Miami Select Choirs, led by Sarah J. Baker, are featured in the 5 p.m. concert on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The performance at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8 features St. Xavier High School’s Ensemble X, led by Jeffrey Stern. Milford School Choirs, led by Tracy Carpenter, are featured in the 5 p.m. performance on Sunday, Dec. 8.

CCM Presents Staged Version of J. S. Bach’s ‘St. John Passion’

CCM presents J. S. Bach’s St. John Passion, a work for chamber orchestra, choir and vocal soloists that premiered in 1724. The staged performances of this timeless piece will take place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, at Cincinnati’s Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Ave.

This production features CCM’s Chamber Choir and Concert Orchestra, led by Earl Rivers, CCM director of choral studies. Artist diploma candidate Audrey Chait directs the St. John Passion and will also direct CCM’s Studio Opera production of Dinner at Eight in February. Faculty artist Daniel Weeks, tenor, sings the role of the Evangelist, with student soloists playing the other roles.

“The Passion story is told here through the eyes of the Apostle John,” Chait says. “Through reliving his memories of the final days of Jesus, he explores both the interior and exterior of the narrative, as well as his own role in creating the canonical version of the text. We utilize a simple, timeless visual language to emphasize the beauty and transcendence of Bach’s landmark work.”

“In recent seasons throughout the world, staged productions of Bach’s St. John Passion and St. Matthew Passion have sprung up and blossomed, as music directors and stage directors explore new means of expressing these timeless settings of the Passion story,” Rivers adds. “By staging the St. John Passion, CCM is preparing CCM students for real-world professional performances they will experience over their careers.”

Student soloists will sing the roles of Jesus (Daren Small, baritone), Pontius Pilate (John Siarris, baritone) in this production, with the parts for the Disciples sung by Claire Lopatka and Victoria Okafor, sopranos; Michelle La Jeunesse and Brenda Iglesias Zarco, mezzo-sopranos; Victor Cardamone, tenor; Joshua Cook and Antonia Cruz, baritones; and Michael Hyatt, bass.

CCM Choral Studies Presents Monteverdi Festival on April 8

CCM showcases the works of Claudio Monteverdi with a 90-minute performance at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 8, 2018, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. The CCM Chamber Choir, student soloists and early music guest artists unite under the direction of Earl Rivers for this feast of chamber and large-scale choral works.

The concert features Monteverdi’s madrigals from Book 7 (1619) and Book 8 (1638), as well as concertato motets from the Selva Morale e Spirituale of 1641. These pieces will be contrasted with four works from contemporary composers Dominick Argento, Claude Baker, William Hawley and Ildebrando Pizzetti, who were each influenced by Monteverdi’s compositions.

With support from the Cambridge Charitable Foundation, CCM has invited seven professional early music guest artists to perform on period violins, lute, baroque guitar, theorbo, baroque harp, baroque cello and contrabass at the concert. The guest artists will also coach CCM harpsichord and organ students who perform at the concert.

CCM’s Monteverdi Festival enhances student experiences in historical performance practice and provides CCM voice students with chamber music experiences within a large choral ensemble — all while presenting a feast of works by Monteverdi and his followers that audiences will relish.

The following week, the CCM Chorale and CCM piano professor Kenneth Griffiths perform Franz Liszt’s Via Crucis under the direction of Brett Scott. This masterwork was composed between 1866 and 1878 and portrays Jesus’ journey carrying the cross in 14 meditations. The program, which takes place at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 14 in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater, will also include art songs by Liszt performed by eight student soloists.

CCM Choral Ensembles Present World Premiere by Dale Warland on Feb. 11

The Spring 2018 Choral Series opens with the world premiere of Dale Warland’s I Hear America Singing, commissioned to celebrate CCM’s 150^th Anniversary.

The Department of Choral Studies at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music presents nine free and ticketed performances during its Spring 2018 Concert Series, beginning with a special program honoring CCM’s Sesquicentennial at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11 in Corbett Auditorium.

The CCM Chamber Choir, led by Earl Rivers, opens the concert series on Sunday, Feb. 11 with the world premiere of Dale Warland’s I Hear America Singing, commissioned to celebrate the 150th anniversary of CCM’s founding.

Founder of the Grammy Award-nominated Dale Warland Singers and an inductee in the American Classical Music Hall of Fame, Warland’s (HonDoc, 2008) distinguished career as a choral composer and conductor spans more than six decades. CCM is home to the Dale Warland Singers Archive, which is among the largest collection of contemporary choral works in the country.

Warland chose to set the commissioned choral work to text from Walt Whitman’s I Hear America Singing, which was revised for the fourth edition of Leaves of Grass in 1867 — the same year Clara Baur founded the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

“Whitman, in this poem, creates an image of an America unified by song and hard work,” Warland says. “I cannot help but believe that the founders and early participants associated with CCM must have been fully aware of Whitman’s passion for music and the high regard that he had for singing.”

In celebration of CCM’s Sesquicentennial, acclaimed countertenor and alumnus Michael Maniaci (BM, 1999) returns to CCM as the featured soloist in the Feb. 11 concert with the Chamber Choir in Leonard Bernstein’s Missa Brevis. Praised for his rare, thrilling voice and sensational stage presence, Maniaci will also return to CCM to solo in Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms for a second concert on March 8.

The Feb. 11 concert also features performances from the Cincinnati Children’s Choir Bel Canto, directed by Robyn Lana; the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses, conducted by Kevin Coker and Molly Getsinger; and the CCM Chorale, conducted by Brett Scott, in Brahms’ Neue Liebeslieder (New Love Songs).

Celebrate the Season at CCM with Annual Holiday Concerts

Bring family and friends to CCM to celebrate the season with annual Jazz, Feast of Carols and Cincinnati Children’s Choir holiday-themed concerts.

Swing into the season to the big band sounds of CCM’s hottest bands and coolest voices at the Jazz Holiday Extravaganza at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 29. The concert features the CCM Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Lab Band with Musical Theatre students, led by music directors Scott Belck and Craig Bailey.

Later that week, the annual favorite Feast of Carols returns with performances at 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on both Saturday, Dec. 2 and Sunday, Dec. 3.

A tradition that dates back decades, the Feast of Carols concert embraces a variety of holiday songs ranging from the classic and traditional to the contemporary. CCM’s Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra will be joined by the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses, Cincinnati Children’s Choir and guest choirs from Walnut Hills High School, Bridgetown Middle School and the Southern Gateway Chorus for four performances of holiday favorites.

Conductors Earl Rivers, Brett Scott, Robyn Lana, Kevin Coker, Molly Getsinger, Jeff Ledgers, Anthony Nims and Chelsey Sweatman lead the choirs on stage and invite the audience members to join in for the spectacular “Fa-La-La” finale.

On Saturday, Dec. 9, the Cincinnati Children’s Choir’s Holiday Concert will feature all 450 members of the Choir, including CCM resident choirs and satellite choirs from across the Tristate area, performing holiday songs from around the globe. Robyn Lana conducts.

CCM Chamber Choir and Philharmonia Perform J.S. Bach’s Monumental ‘Mass in B Minor’

The beloved choral work will be presented in two concerts on Nov. 4 and 5 at two Cincinnati churches. Tickets available through the CCM Box Office.

CCM’s Chamber Choir and Philharmonia Orchestra combine forces for two monumental performances of J.S. Bach’s grand choral-orchestral achievement, Mass in B Minor. Under the direction of Earl Rivers, the work will be performed in concert at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4,  at Christ Church Cathedral and at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5, at Knox Church.

The Mass in B Minor is the Mount Everest of the Late Baroque period. It represents Bach’s supreme achievement of universality, assembling a monumental setting of the Ordinary of the Mass that presents a breadth of musical style greater than any other choral-orchestral work in the Western canon. “The Mass in B Minor is a synthesis of every stylistic and technical contribution Bach made to music,” Rivers says.

“Audience members unfamiliar with Bach’s Mass in B Minor may be surprised by the range and variety of musical styles within the 27 movements,” Rivers says. “Full-throttled chorus and orchestra movements with high Baroque trumpets, flutes, oboes, bassoons, timpani, organ, harpsichord and strings are contrasted with solo and duet movements that reflect the virtuoso operatic arias that were beloved in the Late Baroque.”

The two performances of the masterwork will showcase different student soloists from CCM’s opera and voice programs. Baroque specialists Adriana Contino, cellist, and Garry Clarke, violinist, have coached the CCM Philharmonia and vocal soloists in preparation for the concerts.

The Nov. 4 performance will feature BM Voice student Page Michels, soprano; second-year MM Voice student Abigail Hoyt, mezzo-soprano; second-year DMA Voice student Jill Phillips, mezzo-soprano; second-year MM Voice student Dongwhi Baek, tenor; and second-year MM Voice student Samson McCrady, baritone.

The Nov. 5 performance will feature first-year AD Opera student Murrella Parton, soprano; first-year AD Opera student Kayleigh Decker, mezzo-soprano; second-year AD Opera student Amber Fasquelle, mezzo-soprano; first-year AD Opera student Benjamin Lee, tenor; and second-year DMA Voice student Matthew Worth, baritone.

“Enabling CCM students to study, rehearse and perform Bach’s Mass in B Minor is an essential component of CCM’s commitment to providing our students a comprehensive immersion in Baroque performance practices,” Rivers says. “As Mass in B Minor represents the highest musical achievement of the Late Baroque, it is a filing work to perform in CCM’s 150th Anniversary Season.”

The history of CCM’s success involves three institutions separate in their origins but united by a common cause: the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, the College of Music of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati. Sometimes partners and sometimes rivals, these three institutions would eventually join forces to establish one of the world’s premier schools for the performing and media arts.
