CCM Showcases Dazzling Student Choreography This Weekend

CCM continues its 2018-19 Studio Series with the Dance Student Choreographers Showcase, which will be onstage in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater from Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9.

This year’s featured student choreographers are Alison Bartels, Erin Donnelly, Hope Friedman, Lydia Hubacher and Madeline Kallay. They will be joined by guest artist and CCM alumna Renae Bla’szé (BFA Dance, 2013). Each choreographer has created an original work for an ensemble of 10 to 15 dancers that will be presented by CCM students.

The choreographers have been selected through an application, proposal and adjudication process. Some began their creative processes as early as last summer. The music and movement choices are a confluence of styles and technique, including technically challenging contemporary ballet works as well as “slouchy sock-wearing friends pacing the space,” says CCM Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Dance Judith Mikita, who directs the production. “All of the pieces have been thoughtfully-crafted and built with integrity and intent.”

The choreographers have collaborated with students in other areas of CCM, including lighting design, sound design and composition. Alison Bartels’ music was specially composed for her work by piano and composition student, Maksym Malaya.

Audiences can enjoy this choreographic kaleidoscope from Thursday, March 7 through Saturday, March 9, 2019, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, March 4, 2019. Visit the CCM Box Office or call 513-556-4183 to reserve. Limit two tickets per order.

Dance Students Debut New Moves in CCM’s Choreographer Showcase

Student Choreographers Showcase

CCM Dance students present original choreography in the annual Student Choreographer Showcase on March 1-3, 2018 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free but reservations are required; tickets become available at noon on Monday, Feb. 26 through the CCM Box Office.

The Choreographer Showcase is directed by Assistant Professor of Dance André Megerdichian and presents an exciting mixed bill of choreography from classical ballet to contemporary dance. The featured student choreographers are Molly-Grace Lewis, Brenna Sweeny, Hope Friedman, Amelia Harris, Alexandria Wright, Hannah Holtsclaw and Erin Donnelly.

Students are reimagining what can be done on point shoes and are commissioning original music for their choreography, Megerdichian says. They have collaborated with CCM set and lighting designers and are “pushing the boundaries of expected norms.”

“The works are bold, imaginative and incredibly moving,” Megerdichian adds. “The sheer variety of work combined and their emotional resonance will keep audiences at the edge of their seats. It’s a beautiful show.”
