CCM Announces Initial 2019-20 Performance Lineup, New Subscription Offerings

Area arts lovers have a new destination for world-class performances in 2019-20. The largest single-source of performing and media arts events in the state of Ohio, the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music has assembled all of its public performances under the new banner of CCMONSTAGE and the new online portal ccmonstage.universitytickets.com, making it easier than ever for audiences to experience the immense talent of the college’s student and faculty artists.

“Before they appear on the world stage, tomorrow’s arts leaders and luminaries get their start on the CCM stage,” says CCM Dean Stanley E. Romanstein, PhD. “CCM is already synonymous with excellence in performing arts education. Beginning this fall, CCMONSTAGE will become synonymous with opportunities for the general public to experience this excellence for themselves.”

This new name and online home for CCM’s wide array of public events is being accompanied by all-new subscription packages, digital sales options and much more. “From our patrons’ first point of contact with the CCM Box Office to the program booklets that they receive when they arrive at each major performance, we are enhancing every aspect of the audience experience with CCMONSTAGE,” says Romanstein.

New Subscription Packages

For the first time ever, subscribers get priority access to the spectacular theatre arts productions presented on all of CCM’s stages. In place of CCM’s conventional Mainstage subscriptions, each genre-specific CCMONSTAGE subscription package is designed to let audiences experience more of what they love most.

CCMONSTAGE’s 2019-20 theatre arts subscription series includes three operas (The Bartered Bride, Partenope and The Magic Flute), four musicals (42^nd Street, The Rocky Horror Show, The Secret Garden and Bright Star), four plays (Lady Windermere’s Fan, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Clybourne Park and Punk Rock) and three dance programs (The Art of Motion, Student Choreographers’ Showcase and Serenade + The Rite of Spring).

These offerings take the place of CCM’s previous “Mainstage Series” and “Studio Series” designations. The CCMONSTAGE operas, musicals, plays and dance productions staged in the Cohen Family Studio Theater will require paid admission and are now included in CCMONSTAGE subscription packages, allowing patrons to secure their seats in advance for these intimate and adventurous productions.

CCMONSTAGE’s concert subscription offerings include a five-part orchestra series featuring the CCM Philharmonia collaborating with special guests like Louis Langrée and Leslie Dunner, a five-part big band series with the incomparable CCM Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Lab Band and a four-part chamber music series featuring CCM resident artists the Ariel Quartet performing with visiting artists including Alexander Fiterstein and Anton Nel. Patrons can now reserve their seats for all CCMONSTAGE concert subscription offerings.

CCM’s full 2019-20 concert schedule will be announced later this summer and flex concert packages will again be available for purchase.

Patrons now have the option of subscribing to each genre-specific series of events, guaranteeing the best seats in the house at the season’s lowest prices.

Subscriptions and single tickets go on sale to the general public at noon on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019.

Patrons who purchased CCM Mainstage or Ariel Quartet subscriptions in 2018-19 will receive a Pre-Sale Code, which grants them exclusive access to CCM’s new subscriptions before the general on sale date. Pre-Sale Codes are being mailed and emailed to all 2018-19 subscribers.

Subscription packages can be purchased online at ccmonstage.universitytickets.com, over the phone at 513-556-4183 or in person at the CCM Box Office in the Atrium of UC’s Corbett Center for the Performing Arts.

Serenade + The Rite of Spring

CCM Dance and the CCM Philharmonia present two ballets set to music by two master composers. The first original ballet created by George Balanchine in America, Serenade is set to romantic music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who also composed Swan Lake, The Nutcracker and Sleeping Beauty. Set to music by Igor Stravinsky, The Rite of Spring was one of the first examples of modern music and dance when the ballet first premiered in Paris in 1913. Although a riot broke out at the premiere, the legendary work is now regarded as one of the most important ballets of the 20^thcentury. CCM’s production of The Rite of Spring features new choreography by Jiang Qi.

CCM Announces Fall 2016 schedule of Major Events

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is delighted to announce its fall schedule of major events. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM proudly presents more than 100 major public performances from Aug. 29 through Dec. 11, 2016.

This fall’s lineup of major events includes faculty and guest artist concerts, fully supported theatrical productions, film screenings, guest lectures and much more!

Runaways is a collage of songs, monologues and dances that captures the energy, courage and honesty of a group of teenagers who are running away “from home… from a boyfriend… from a predator… from themselves.” Created in 1977 by groundbreaking theatre artist Elizabeth Swados, Runaways was born from interviews and workshops that she held with children and young adults who were escaping from their deteriorating family lives. It is a challenging piece of theatre that ultimately celebrates the power of the imagination and the resilience of the human spirit.

Funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work! Adapted by Lynn Nottage from her prize-winning 2003 play of the same name, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a 35-year-old seamstress in 1905 New York City. Esther sews lingerie for a living, interacting with a wealthy Fifth Avenue wife, a Tenderloin prostitute and a Jewish fabric merchant on the Lower East Side, with whom she shares a closeness that cannot be pursued further because of his religion. Esther embarks on a letter-writing relationship with a Panama Canal laborer, leading to marriage and ultimately heartbreak, but she maintains her strength of character and determination to make a better life for herself.

When the clock strikes 12, though, she vanishes… leaving only a single shoe behind. Jules Massenet’s elegant score brings wit and charm to this timeless romance based on Charles Perrault’s telling of the Cinderella fairy tale. This production is sung in French with English supertitles.

• Percussion Group Cincinnati’s Faculty Artist Series concert on Friday, Feb. 19, has been canceled.
• CCM welcomes the U.S. Army Ground Forces Band’s “Forscom Four” Clarinet Quartet for a free performance in Mary Emery Hall room 3250 (the “master class room”) at 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 6.
• Guest speaker Brian Kane’s Thinking About Music Lecture on Friday, March 11, has been canceled.
• CCM welcomes the U.S. Army Band’s “Pershing’s Own” Woodwind Quintet for a free performance in Watson Hall at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 16.
• Guest artist Caroline Hong will open CCM’s 2016 Bearcat Piano Festival with a concert in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29.
• The Bearcat Piano Festival continues with a student performance of J. S. Bach’s The Complete Well-Tempered Clavier Book II in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

CCM Winds’ Concert Series Resumes Jan. 31 With Performance By Chamber Players And Torrential Saxophone Quartet

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies celebrates a diverse collection of repertoire this semester, ranging from Bach to brand new works by CCM’s own talented student composers!

Under the direction of Professor Glenn D. Price, the CCM Chamber Players kick off the performance series at 4 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 31, with a collaborative concert featuring the Torrential Saxophone Quartet, an award-winning CCM student ensemble. The concert’s program includes Philip Glass’ monumental Glassworks, along with original works by CCM student composers. Later on in the semester, the Chamber Players present Saint-Saëns’ cherished Carnival of the Animals (March 6) and Stravinsky’s beloved L’histoire du soldat (April 17).

The CCM Wind Orchestra and Wind Ensemble join forces in the Masterworks concert on Thursday, February 4, with a program of J.S. Bach’s infamous Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and Ives’ patriotic Variations on “America,” featuring guest artist Craig Kirchhoff at the podium.

CCM Doctoral student George Carpten makes his Wind Orchestra debut performing Marco Pütz’s Trumpet Concerto on Tuesday, March 15.

CCM’s Faculty Artist Series Resumes on Jan. 12 With Free Performances By World-Class Musicians

CCM’s esteemed faculty artists take center stage during eight diverse performances this spring! Running from January 12 through February 19, these programs highlight music from multiple genres, including classical, jazz, musical theatre and more!

The Spring 2016 Faculty Artist Series commences on Tuesday, Jan. 12, with a performance of Johannes Brahms’ works for cello and piano by Alan Rafferty and Sandra Rivers, coinciding with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra’s two-year Brahms Fest. The series concludes on Friday, Feb. 19, with a performance by the famed Percussion Group Cincinnati, which is comprised of CCM faculty members Allen Otte, Russell Burge and James Culley.

Each concert in CCM’s Faculty Artist Series series is free and open to the general public, offering audiences the chance to hear recitals by world-class artists in CCM’s stunning performance halls.

CCM Celebrates the Sounds of the Season With Feast of Carols and Cincinnati Children’s Choir Holiday Concerts This Month

Hundreds of voices will fill the stage of Corbett Auditorium this month as CCM celebrates the season with two separate holiday-themed concert programs.

The annual Feast of Carols returns with 2 and 5 p.m. performances on both Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6.

The following Saturday, Dec. 12, CCM ensemble-in-residence the Cincinnati Children’s Choir presents its Holiday Concert with performances at 2 and 5 p.m.

The annual Feast of Carols – a tradition that dates back decades – will embrace a variety of holiday songs ranging from the classic and traditional to the contemporary. CCM’s Chamber Choir, Chorale and Concert Orchestra will be joined by the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses, Cincinnati Children’s Choir and guest choirs from Elder, Sycamore and Walnut Hills High Schools for four performances of holiday favorites.

Conductors Earl Rivers, Brett Scott, Robyn Lana, Christopher Albanese, Alexander Sutton, David F. Allen, Kenneth Holdt and Anthony Nims invite audiences to sing along to cherished holiday carols during the spectacular “Fa-La-La” finale with audience, combined choirs and CCM’s Concert Orchestra.

The Cincinnati Children’s Choir’s Holiday Concert will feature all 450 members of the Choir, including CCM resident choirs and satellite choirs from across the tri-state area, performing holiday songs from around the globe. Robyn Lana conducts.

CCM Spring 2015 Calendar of Major Events – April Updates

Please note the following updates to CCM’s schedule of major events for the spring:

• The Pangea Chamber Players guest artist concert originally scheduled for April 2 has been cancelled.
• The April 12 performance of Chuck Owen’s River Runs features the CCM Concert Orchestra, not the CCM Philharmonia.
• The venue has changed for CCM’s April 19 performance of Dave Brubeck’s The Gates of Justice. The concert will now take place at Knox Presbyterian Church, 3400 Michigan Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45208
• The faculty artist concert entitled “The Original Phil DeGreg and Friends” has been rescheduled for 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 22. This celebration of the career of retiring faculty member Phil DeGreg will take place in Patricia Corbett Theater. The performance is free and open to the general public. You can listen to Professor DeGreg preview his concert, which was originally scheduled for Feb. 17, courtesy of WVXU 91.7 FM.
• CCM welcomes composer Mark Applebaum for a guest artist performance at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 25 in Watson the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. This performance is free and open to the general public.
• CCM’s Division of Electronic Media will host its Senior Showcase at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 30 in Watson Hall. Admission to the event is free and open to the general public.

CCM’s Orchestras Present World-Premieres, 20th Century Masterpieces and More During Spring 2015 Concert Series

The CCM Philharmonia, led by Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson.

CCM’s Department of Orchestral Studies will celebrate the works of contemporary composers and all-time greats alike in concert this spring.

Under the direction of Professor of Music and Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson and Visiting Assistant Professor of Music Aik Khai Pung, CCM’s acclaimed orchestral ensembles will present a series of eight concerts from Jan. 30 through April 16, several of which are free and open to the general public. Tickets are on sale now for all performances requiring paid admission.

The Spring Orchestra Series opens with a performance by the CCM Philharmonia on Friday, Jan. 30, featuring the world-premiere of Ulrich Kreppein’s Flucht (Flight). Kreppein earned first prize in CCM’s 2013 Alexander Zemlinsky Composition Competition for his original work Spiel der Schatten (The Play of the Shadows). For this achievement, Kreppein received a cash award of $30,000 and the opportunity to write a new work for the Philharmonia.

The Philharmonia turns the spotlight to CCM’s own up-and-coming composers on Friday, Feb. 20, with a free concert featuring new works by the gifted students from CCM’s Department of Composition, which has one of the top 10 music composition graduate programs in the country according to current rankings.

The world-premieres continue on Friday, March 6, as CCM’s Concert Orchestra performs Ruins Upon Ruins, a new work by Zemlinsky Composition Competition second prize-winner Aaron Travers. The orchestral work is based on the continual cycle of the creation, destruction and recreation of cities.

The Philharmonia then looks back to the monumental works of French Romantic composer Hector Berlioz and 20th century Russian composer Igor Stravinsky in a unique double-bill of Te Deum and The Rite of Spring on Friday, March 13. CCM’s Chamber Choir and Chorale and ensemble-in-residence the Cincinnati Children’s Choir join the Philharmonia for this concert, which also features faculty artist Michael Unger, organ; and student artist Christopher Bozeka, tenor.

Highlights also include CCM’s always-popular Philharmonic Jazz concert, which returns on Sunday, April 12, as the Philharmonia and Jazz Ensembles join forces to present Chuck Owen’s concerto for jazz guitar, saxophone and orchestra, River Runs. Faculty emeritus and saxophonist Rick VanMatre makes his return to the CCM stage for this performance, which acclaimed jazz bassist Rufus Reid has called “a tour de force.” Mark Gibson and Scott Belck conduct.

CCM’s nationally ranked orchestral program provides an unparalleled educational and performance experience for hundreds of instrumentalists each year. The breadth of each season’s concert series rivals many of the world’s great performing organizations, and students become versed in a body of repertoire that encompasses more than most conservatories venture to program. CCM’s Jazz Ensembles Present the Music of Ray Charles, Duke Ellington, Chuck Owen and More This Spring

CCM’s Jazz Ensembles will celebrate the greats of both classic and contemporary jazz in a remarkable series of concerts this spring.

Under the musical direction of Professors Scott Belck and Craig Bailey, CCM’s big bands will also welcome a wide variety of guest artists to the stage. Tickets for all performances are on sale now.

The Spring Jazz Series opens on Sunday, Jan. 25, with a concert highlighting the works of contemporary jazz composers including nine-time GRAMMY Award-nominee Jim McNeely and three-time GRAMMY Award-winner Maria Schneider. The concert will also showcase new compositions by students in CCM’s Department of Jazz Studies.

On Sunday, Feb. 15, CCM Jazz will celebrate the music of Ray Charles with “Jazz + Genius = Soul.” The tribute concert takes its name from a legendary 1961 album by Charles, which features big band arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Guest vocalist Billy Osborne and new CCM Jazz Professor Craig Bailey, who spent nearly 20 years as lead alto saxophonist in Ray Charles’ band, will help take audiences back to the days of the great Ray Charles Orchestra.

Other highlights include a concert dedicated to frequent collaborators Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn on Sunday, March 8, featuring guest artist and lecturer Todd Stoll. A CCM alumnus, Stoll (MM Trumpet, 1991) currently serves as Vice President of Education at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

On Sunday, April 12, CCM’s Jazz Ensembles and Philharmonia Orchestra join forces for a special performance of Chuck Owen’s River Runs, a concerto for jazz guitar, saxophone and orchestra. Faculty emeritus and saxophonist Rick VanMatre makes his return to the CCM stage for this performance, which acclaimed jazz bassist Rufus Reid has called “a tour de force.” Mark Gibson and Scott Belck conduct.

In addition, CCM’s illustrious jazz faculty will present a pair of free concerts this spring. On Tuesday, Feb. 10, CCM’s Faculty Jazztet will perform in the stunning Robert J. Werner Recital Hall, with a lineup including Craig Bailey, James Bunte, Rick VanMatre, Scott Belck, Marc Fields, Rusty Burge, James. E Smith, Phil DeGreg, Aaron Jacobs, Art Gore and John Von Ohlen.

On Tuesday, Feb. 17, CCM celebrates the career of Jazz Studies professor Phil DeGreg with a concert of music composed by DeGreg! He will be joined by other faculty artists, including Rick VanMatre, Rusty Burge, Kim Pensyl, Scott Belck, Marc Fields, Craig Bailey and more for this very special event.
