Watch CCM piano majors perform in 3-part ‘COVID Etude Project’

CCM presents three concert streams featuring piano students performing in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall and in other performance spaces throughout the world!

Presented in conjunction with the CCMONSTAGE Online series of concert streams, the COVID Etude Project showcases three complete sets of etudes by composers Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy and William Bolcom, performed by CCM students and streamed online nightly from Friday, March 26 through Sunday, March 28. Each concert will stream simultaneously on CCM’s websiteYouTube channel and Facebook page.

“The COVID Etude Project is a joint-studio project of mine and Professor Ran Dank,” says CCM Associate Professor of Piano Soyeon Kate Lee. “It was conceived to keep our students motivated and create a sense of purpose and community during this unprecedented time.”

“Many of our students are overseas, some whom we have never met in-person, and we have tried to make the most of our time on Zoom together and build a studio community despite the circumstances.”

As explained by arts writer Janelle Gelfand in her preview of CCM’s COVID Etude Project for the Cincinnati Business Courier: “Etudes are difficult studies for mastering a technical challenge, such as runs, leaps, octaves or arpeggios. They are also engaging musical works. Composers such as Chopin, Debussy, Liszt and Rachmaninoff wrote etudes meant for the concert hall.”

The first concert stream at 7:30 p.m. EDT on March 26 features Liszt’s Transcendental Études, a 12-part piece published in 1852. The episode is roughly one hour long.

The second stream at 7:30 p.m. EDT on March 27 showcases Debussy’s Twelve Études, composed in 1915 and regarded as one of the more challenging works in the piano repertoire. The episode is approximately 50 minutes long.

The final stream at 7:30 p.m. EDT on March 28 shares Bolcom’s Twelve New Etudes written between 1977 and 1986. The episode is 45 minutes long.

After each premiere broadcast, all three installments of the COVID Etude Project will remain available for on-demand viewing on CCM’s websiteYouTube channel and Facebook page.

Students recorded one etude each wherever they were — some students performed in CCM’s Robert J. Werner Recital Hall, while others gave their performances at home or in piano showrooms near their residences.

“Seeing our students take up this challenge with so much energy, professionalism and positive spirit is so gratifying to see, and definitely has been one of the highlights for me at CCM,” said Lee.

CCM presents new series of free digital concerts and performing arts presentations

CCM’s “stars of tomorrow” are back on stage, and you get the best seats in the house!

The University of Cincinnati’s nationally ranked and internationally renowned College-Conservatory of Music invites arts lovers from around the world to join in the viewing party for the debut episode of CCMONSTAGE Online at 7:30 p.m. EST on Friday, Dec. 11, 2020. The premiere will stream simultaneously on CCM’s homepage and YouTube channel.

This dynamic new series of digital concerts and performing arts presentations will allow audiences near and far to experience the unparalleled artistry and expertise of CCM’s students, faculty and staff.

“The performing arts help to build and sustain a sense of community,” says CCM Dean Stanley E. Romanstein, PhD. “Now more than ever, we crave the sense of fellowship that comes through shared cultural experiences. While we may not yet be able to welcome audiences back to the CCM Village for live performances, we are excited to help you stay connected to the arts and to each other through our new CCMONSTAGE Online performance series.”

Recorded live at CCM while adhering to strict health and safety precautions, each installment of this new performance video series spotlights a different CCM program or ensemble.

The debut installment features the CCM Philharmonia student orchestra performing a program of Classical Virtuosity that includes works by Claude Debussy/Maurice Ravel, Ottorino Respighi, Julia Perry and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Each episode also features insight into the repertoire and commentary on the process of rehearsing and performing during the era of COVID-19.

Future episodes will showcase performances by the CCM Ballet Ensemble, the CCM Chamber Choir, and a collaborative concert with CCM string quartet-in-residence the Ariel Quartet and members of the CSO/CCM Diversity Fellowship program. The performances by the CCM Ballet Ensemble and CCM Chamber Choir are further augmented by the cutting-edge artistry of students and faculty from CCM’s Theatre Design and Production programs. CCM will announce the premiere dates for these subsequent episodes later this fall.

CCM turned to the considerable expertise of its E-Media faculty and alumni to help produce this new series. Video production services for CCMONSTAGE Online are provided by MasseyGreenAVP, LLC. “Our goal was to capture the world-renowned talent that CCM has to offer through multiple cameras, providing CCM with professionally-produced videos to share with their fans virtually,” says CCM alumnus John Massey (BFA E-Media, ‘03), who directs each installment in this new series.

Massey explains, “Our team is made up of videographers with decades of experience from the news, sports and entertainment industries. We were excited to be able to shoot in CCM’s beautiful facilities. We recruited E-Media grad John Tapogna (BFA Broadcasting, 1988), who has over 25 years’ experience as a sports videographer, to tackle providing tight shots. We sought to capture the energy and emotion of the performance up close while showing off the performers’ technical skill.”

All episodes of CCMONSTAGE Online will be digitally streamed for free. After the premiere broadcast, each installment in this ongoing series will remain available for on-demand viewing on CCM’s website and YouTube channel.

CCM’s Ariel Quartet Welcomes Famed Clarinetist David Krakauer for Jan. 26 Concert

The internationally acclaimed Ariel Quartet helps CCM kick-off its spring semester concert series with a program of Debussy, Webern and Golijov at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26. For this concert, the Ariel Quartet will be joined by distinguished guest artist David Krakauer.

Widely considered one of the greatest clarinetists on the planet, Krakauer has been praised internationally as a key innovator in modern klezmer as well as a major voice in classical music. For this program, Krakauer will join the Ariel Quartet for a performance of Osbaldo Golijov’s The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind.

“The movements of this work sound to me as if written in three of the different languages spoken by the Jewish people throughout our history,” Golijov explains. “This somehow reflects the composition’s epic nature. I hear the prelude and the first movement, the most ancient, in Arameic; the second movement is in Yissih, the rich and fragile language of a long exile; the third movement and postlude are in sacred Hebrew.”

The Ariel Quartet’s program for Jan. 26 also includes performances of Claude Debussy’s String Quartet in G Minor, Op. 10, and Anton Webern’s Six Bagatelles, Op. 9.

About David Krakauer
Internationally acclaimed clarinetist David Krakauer redefines the notion of a concert artist. Known for his mastery of myriad styles, he occupies the unique position of being one of the world’s leading exponents of Eastern European Jewish klezmer music, and at the same time is a major voice in classical music. He has appeared with the Tokyo, Kronos and Emerson quartets, plus as soloist with the Dresden, Seattle and Detroit symphony orchestras, among many others.

With his band Ancestral Groove, he has redefined the klezmer genre with major appearances at Carnegie Hall and internationally. His discography contains some of the most important klezmer recordings of the past decade, notably The Dreams and Prayers of Isaac the Blind (Golijov/Kronos/Krakauer on Nonesuch).

Consistently defying categorization, Krakauer has enjoyed major ongoing artistic collaborations with a tremendously diverse group of performers and composers including Dawn Upshaw, Itzhak Perlman, John Zorn, Fred Wesley, Music from Marlboro, Abraham Inc, Osvaldo Golijov, the Klezmatics, John Cage, Danny Elfman and Socalled. In his newest project, The Big Picture, he explores the universal search for identity through a re-imagination of familiar themes by renowned film music composers brought together in a cinematic concert accompanied by original visuals.

An avid educator, Krakauer has enjoyed a long relationship with Mannes (New School University), the Manhattan School of Music, NYU, and the Bard Conservatory.

Tickets are $25 for general admission, $15 for non-UC students and FREE for UC students with valid ID.

Parking and Directions
Parking is available in the CCM Garage (located at the base of Corry Boulevard off Jefferson Avenue) and additional garages throughout the campus of the University of Cincinnati. Please visit uc.edu/parking for more information on parking rates.

For detailed maps and directions, please visit uc.edu/visitors. Additional parking is available off-campus at the new U Square complex on Calhoun Street and other neighboring lots.
