CCM Slideshows: ‘Cinderella’

CCM’s 2018-19 Mainstage Series comes to a stunning conclusion tonight through Sunday (April 26-28) with the fairytale ballet Cinderella. Choreographed by Artistic Director of the Dayton Ballet Karen Russo Burke, the production’s ensemble director is Michael Tevlin.

CCM Dance Presents ‘Cinderella’ Fairytale Ballet

A timeless fairytale romance, Cinderella “is among the most rewardingly rewatchable and relistenable ballets ever made” (New York Times).

CCM’s Mainstage Series presents Sergei Prokofiev’s romantic Cinderella ballet on Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Patricia Corbett Theater. Choreographed by Artistic Director of the Dayton Ballet Karen Russo Burke, the production’s ensemble director is Michael Tevlin.

Cinderella is known for its jubilant melodies, lush scenery and graceful retelling of the timeless fairytale romance by Charles Perrault. A poor girl wishes to escape her evil stepmother and stepsisters, so her fairy godmother gives her a ticket to the ball! The girl meets prince charming and they fall in love, but she vanishes when the clock strikes midnight. CCM’s production of the beloved ballet features the college’s talented dance students as well as Dayton Ballet guest artist Ivan Braatz as the prince.

Burke has cast male dancers as the ugly stepsisters in CCM’s production of Cinderella, a convention that originates from Sir Frederick Ashton’s popular staging of the ballet for The Royal Ballet. Burke watched Ashton’s Cinderella choreography on TV as a young girl and was mesmerized by the performance. “Audiences were shocked to see such physical comedy in a ballet,” she remembers.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy and a “golden oldie” from the Broadway season of 1950. Nathan Detroit is a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

THE TURN OF THE SCREW

Based on Henry James’ classic ghost-story novella, Britten’s compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle’s country estate, where the ghosts of a former valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. CCM Dance showcases an array of classic and contemporary works restaged and choreographed by CCM Dance faculty members. The thrilling highlight of the evening is Birthday Variations, set to music by Giuseppe Verdi and staged by guest artist Nicole Duffy Robertson, a répétiteur for the Gerald Arpino Foundation. The performance of Birthday Variations, an Arpino ballet, is presented with the permission of the Gerald Arpino Foundation and has been produced in accordance with the Foundation service standards established and provided by the Foundation.

A marine lieutenant decides to put on a play to celebrate the king’s birthday. He casts the play with convicts who populate an Australian prison camp. Few of them can read, let alone act, and the play is produced against a background of food shortages and barbaric prison punishments. Our Country’s Good is as an inspiring tribute to the transforming power of drama. For mature audiences.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame begins as bells sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools, but he is held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. He escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though — the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. The musical premiered as Der Glöckner von Notre Dame in 1999 in Berlin.

Mozart’s last opera seria displays some of his most memorable and marvelous arias! The story centers on Roman emperor Titus (Tito) who must choose a wife, but is unable to find a suitable match. In his search for an empress, Tito narrowly avoids an assassination plot instigated by his protégé Sesto and the former emperor’s daughter, Vitellia, who wants the throne for herself. Caught between his duty and his heart, the emperor must choose whether to rule with mercy or with an iron fist.

When the locals in a small Russian hamlet learn that an undercover government inspector is coming for a surprise visit, a case of mistaken identity sends the whole village spiraling into a world of panic and greed. Part farce, part slapstick and wholly entertaining, this timely and spirited adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s classic play exposes the corruption of a provincial town with biting hilarity.

Set in Damon Runyon’s mythical New York City, Guys and Dolls is the perfect musical comedy. Nathan Detroit is a gambler trying to find the cash to set up the biggest craps game in town while the authorities breathe down his neck. Meanwhile, his girlfriend and nightclub performer, Adelaide, laments that they’ve been engaged for 14 years. Nathan turns to fellow gambler Sky Masterson for the dough, and Sky ends up chasing straight-laced missionary Sarah Brown as a result. Guys and Dolls takes us from the heart of Times Square to the cafés of Havana, Cuba and even into the sewers of New York City, but eventually everyone ends up right where they belong.

Based on Henry James’ classic ghost-story novella, Britten’s compelling chamber opera presents the story of a governess charged with the care of two orphaned children at their absentee uncle’s country estate, where the ghosts of a former valet and his lover haunt the grounds. With a blend of 12-tone techniques, arresting motifs and stirring lyricism, the action moves with incredible fluidity, creating a chilling tale of sexual repression and the corruption of innocence. For mature audiences.

Set in Botany Bay in 1789, Our Country’s Good is a darkly comedic tale based on the true story of Australia’s first theatrical performance. A marine lieutenant decides to put on a play to celebrate the king’s birthday. He casts the play with convicts who populate an Australian prison camp. Few of them can read, let alone act, and the play is produced against a background of food shortages and barbaric prison punishments. Our Country’s Good is as an inspiring tribute to the transforming power of drama. For mature audiences.

Based on the Victor Hugo novel and songs from the Disney animated feature, The Hunchback of Notre Dame begins as bells sound through the famed cathedral in fifteenth-century Paris. Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, observes all of Paris reveling in the Feast of Fools, but he is held captive by his devious caretaker, the archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo. He escapes for the day and joins the boisterous crowd, only to be treated cruelly by all but the beautiful gypsy, Esmeralda. Quasimodo isn’t the only one captivated by her free spirit, though — the handsome Captain Phoebus and Frollo are equally enthralled. As the three vie for her attention, Frollo embarks on a mission to destroy the gypsies and it’s up to Quasimodo to save them all. Parental discretion is advised. Victor Hugo’s novel contains mature themes and situations, which may be distressing for young viewers.

Mozart’s last opera seria displays some of his most memorable and marvelous arias! The story centers on Roman emperor Titus (Tito) who must choose a wife, but is unable to find a suitable match. In his search for an empress, Tito narrowly avoids an assassination plot instigated by his best friend Sesto and the former emperor’s daughter, Vitellia, who wants the throne for herself. Caught between his duty and his heart, the emperor must choose whether to rule with mercy or with an iron fist.

Celebrate spring’s arrival with a fully staged fairytale ballet. A poor girl wishes to escape the authoritarian rule of her evil stepmother and stepsisters, so her fairy godmother gives her a ticket to the ball! The girl meets Prince Charming and they fall in love, but she vanishes when the clock strikes midnight. Set to music by Sergei Prokofiev, Cinderella is known for its jubilant melodies, lush scenery and graceful retelling of the timeless romance by Charles Perrault.

A bit of movie magic comes to CCM’s Mainstage in Jules Massenet’s fairytale opera Cendrillon, which continues at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 in Corbett Auditorium.

Inspired by Francois Truffaut’s 1973 French film Day for Night, director Robin Guarino stages Cendrillon on the set of a movie. The opera is based on  Charles Perrault’s original Cinderella story and features all of your favorite characters including the fairy godmother, in the guise of a costume designer, and the ugly stepsisters as diva actresses.

Exploring Magic and Mystery in the Music of ‘Cendrillon’ with Mark Gibson

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music continues its Mainstage Series with Jules Massenet’s classic fairytale opera, Cendrillon (Cinderella) at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 in Corbett Auditorium.

Directed by Robin Guarino, the J. Ralph Corbett Distinguished Chair in Opera, this charming story takes place on the set of a movie where more than just Hollywood magic is in play. In addition to the familiar love story and characters of the original fairytale, CCM’s production includes an added dream sequence, which blurs the lines between dreams and reality.

Jules Massenet’s enchanting musical score shines under the direction of Mark Gibson, Director of Orchestral Studies at CCM. Graduate student Charlotte Kies had the pleasure of speaking with Professor Gibson about the spellbinding music that brings this opera to life.

Have you conducted Massenet’s Cendrillon before? How is it different from the classic fairytale?
No, this is my first Cendrillon. I’m so excited! The basic shape of the Cinderella story remains the same in Massenet’s opera, but what sets it apart is the exquisitely beautiful music shared by Cendrillon and Prince Charming, as well as the duets between Cendrillon and Pandolfe, her father.

Have you made any changes to Massenet’s original music that the audience might like to know about?
In order to accommodate the concept of the production as envisioned by the director, Robin Guarino, we have made appropriate cuts to move the action forward, but the music is all Massenet and all quite lovely.

This opera features a handful of offstage musicians. How is their role different from that of the pit orchestra?
Massenet wrote some magical effects for instrumental ensembles performed outside the pit at several moments in the opera. In Act Two, there is a delightful trio of flute, viola and harp that represents an onstage divertissement during the ball. In Act Three, harp, celesta and organ join an offstage chorus to create a splendid effect in support of the fairy godmother’s supernatural presence. Trumpets and drums introduce the final scene of Act Four with a brilliant D-major fanfare when Cendrillon and the Prince are reunited.

Robin Guarino named Cendrillon as one of your personal favorite operas. What are some of the reasons that you love this particular opera?
The music is so wonderful! Stylistically, it moves between neoclassical and rococo forms and lush romantic duets. The story is charming and vocally gratifying. I just find it irresistible.

What are some of the challenges that the orchestra students face in learning and performing this opera?
As in most romantic operas, the orchestra must be flexible in terms of tempo and rubato in order to accommodate the singers. There is also the matter of French style that demands beauty of sound and delicacy of timbre.

One of your students, Yael Front, will conduct a matinee performance of Cendrillon. What kind of challenges do conducting students face when working on a piece of this magnitude, and what are a few of the things you expect them to learn or take away from this production?
First, as always, there is knowing and understanding the text, the design of the story and its dramatic arc. Second, there is mastering the style and sound of Massenet’s orchestration. Finally, there is the pliancy of gesture needed to shape phrases and accommodate the singer’s vocalism. All in all, quite a series of challenges, and Yael Front, a brilliant young conductor from Israel, has proven more than up to them.

Do you have anything else you’d like our readers to know about the music in this production?

Fairytale Opera ‘Cendrillon’ Arrives on CCM’s Mainstage Nov. 17

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music presents a fairytale opera for the ages, Cendrillon (Cinderella), Nov. 17-20 in Corbett Auditorium as part of this year’s Mainstage Series. Director of Orchestral Studies, Mark Gibson, conducts with stage direction by Robin Guarino, the J. Ralph Corbett Distinguished Chair in Opera.

With original music by Jules Massenet and Libretto by Henri Caïn, Cendrillon is based on Charles Perrault’s original Cinderella story. However, Guarino weaves a bit more magic into CCM’s version of the classic fairytale — movie magic.

Inspired by Francois Truffaut’s 1973 French film Day for Night, CCM’s Cendrillon takes place on the set of a movie. Lucette, a script girl, is the opera’s “Cinderella” who falls asleep on set and dreams of becoming an actress. Her fairy godmother, in the guise of a costume designer, transforms Lucette into the star of the film and transports her to the ball where she falls in love with the Prince, an actor in the film. When Lucette awakes, she is surprised to find the film’s cast arguing about a mysterious woman who attracted the Prince at the ball.

CCM’s Cendrillon, including the added dream sequence, explores themes of transformation and surrealism. Under Guarino’s direction, the opera invites audiences to ask: if it was a dream, does that mean it wasn’t real?

Guarino particularly enjoys working on fairytale operas because of the potential she finds in their accessible storylines. “I love clear, simple, direct story-telling that connects to not only young people, but people of all ages,” she says.

A show for the whole family to enjoy, Cendrillon is ripe with all of the magic and romance of the original fairytale, complete with familiar characters such as the “ugly stepsisters” who appear as diva actresses in this retelling.

The opera is performed in four acts with a brief pause after Act I and an intermission between Acts II and III. It will be sung in French with English supertitles.

CCM Alumna Stephanie Jae Park Performs in National Tour of ‘Cinderella’

CCM alumna Stephanie Jae Park.

We are thrilled to report that CCM alumna Stephanie Jae Park (BFA Musical Theatre, 2014) has been cast in the national tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, which is due at Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center early next year!

The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical from the creators of Oklahoma! and The King and I will delight local audiences Jan. 6 – 18, 2015.

Park’s previous credits include Tuptim in The King and I at the St. Louis Muny. At CCM, she played the role of Cosette in the acclaimed Mainstage Series production of Les Misérables. She also played Marcy Park in the Showboat Majestic’s production of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee.
