CCM Alumnus Receives 2018 Morton Gould Young Composer Award

CCM alumnus Charles Peck (MM Composition, 2012) is one of 17 young composers to receive a 2018 Morton Gould Young Composer Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP).

This year, the ASCAP Foundation received 520 submissions of for the Morton Gould Young Composer Award, which honors the late Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and the foundation’s former president Morton Gould’s lifelong commitment to encouraging young creators. Open to composers of original, classical concert music, the award encourages developing music creators during the earliest stages of their careers.

Peck won the award for Vinyl, a work for chamber orchestra that imitates the flaws of the sound produced by vinyl records, including skips and pitch warping. The piece was written for New York-based chamber orchestra Alarm Will Sound and has been performed at the Mizzou International Composers Festival, Beijing Modern Music Festival and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music.

Peck currently teaches at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is a doctoral candidate at Cornell University, where he earned the Otto R. Stahl Memorial Award in composition. He received his bachelor’s degree in music industry from Drexel University. During his time at CCM, Peck was named the winner of the Composition Competition and was awarded the Scott Huston Award for composition.

Later this week, CCM’s Composition Department hosts the 2018 Midwest Composers Symposium, which opens with a concert by the CCM Wind Symphony, Chorale and Chamber Orchestra at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19, 2018. There will also be participant concerts featuring the compositions by students from CCM, Indiana University, University of Iowa and University of Michigan throughout the day on Saturday, Oct. 20. ‘Music in Cincinnati’ Hails CCM Students Debut Album As ‘Phenomenal’

Mary Ellyn Hutton reviews CCM student Carmine Miranda‘s debut solo album (Bach: 6 Cello Suites) for Music in Cincinnati, calling the recording “phenomenal.”

CCM Student’s Solo Debut To Be Released By Centaur Records

Centaur Records releases CCM student Carmine Miranda’s solo debut recording.

Already an accomplished cellist, CCM doctoral candidate Carmine Miranda (BA, 2010; MM, 2012) is now making his professional solo recording debut!

Two years ago, Miranda recorded Bach’s six solo suites for cello at age 22. Now, his recording is being released under Centaur Records, and is already available digitally on iTunes, Amazon and elsewhere.

CCM Announces Spring 2013 Calendar of Major Events

CCM is delighted to announce its spring schedule of performances. The largest single source of performing arts events in the state of Ohio, CCM presents more than 100 major public performances from Jan. 12 through May 19, ranging from faculty and guest artist concerts to fully supported opera, drama and musical theatre productions.

CCM’s spring semester performance schedule includes the return of Cincinnati’s premiere fundraiser “A Moveable Feast” on Jan. 18, an evening of motion-picture music featuring acclaimed film composer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman on Jan. 27, a celebration of Giuseppe Verdi’s sacred masterwork Requiem on Feb. 1 and 2, a monumental “Mahler Marathon” on March 2, the Ariel String Quartet’s inaugural season finale on April 9, a guest artist recital by acclaimed tenor Lawrence Brownlee on April 13 and the eighth installment of CCM’s popular Pianopalooza concert on April 21.

Also this spring, CCM’s Division of Electronic Media presents the 10-part Global Lens Film Series (Jan. 14 – April 15), Cincinnati Children’s Choir celebrates its 20th anniversary (March 9), the Classical Guitar Department celebrates its 40th anniversary (April 6) and CCM’s year-long Kurt Weill Festival continues with a variety of unique concerts and productions (Feb. 28 – March 12).
