Classic Broadway Hit ’42nd Street’ Opens CCM’s 2019-20 Musical Series This Thursday

The CCMONSTAGE Musical Series presents the ultimate show-biz musical “42nd Street” on Oct. 24-27, 2019. Tickets available online.

Declared by Playbill Magazine as one of the most represented schools on Broadway, CCM presents 42nd Street on Oct. 24-27, 2019 at Corbett Auditorium. Featuring tap dancing and classic show tunes, CCM’s musical theatre student stars of tomorrow bring this beloved story to life on stage with all of the glitz and glamour of the Great White Way.

The ultimate show-biz musical, 42nd Street celebrates Broadway, Times Square and the people who make the magic of musical theatre. Aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer comes to the big city from Allentown, Pennsylvania, and soon lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadway show. But just before opening night, the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star?

Featuring music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin and a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, the score is chock-full of Broadway standards, including “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me,” “Dames,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Forty-Second Street.”

A special guest and distinguished alumnus returns to CCM during the run of 42nd Street to work with musical theatre students. Lee Roy Reams (’64, ‘82; HonDoc ’98) originated the role of Billy Lawlor in 42nd Street when it opened on Broadway in 1980. He was nominated for Tony and Drama Desk awards for his performance. Reams’ master class at CCM will focus on auditioning, the importance and impact on 42nd Street in the realm of American musical theatre, tap dancing and the “business of the business.”

The Ariel Quartet Continues CCM Concert Series on Oct. 22

CCM’s String Quartet-in-Residence presents a concert of fugues on Tuesday, Oct. 22, featuring works by W.A. Mozart, Bartók and Beethoven.

The Ariel Quartet continues its CCMONSTAGE concert series at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019, at CCM’s intimate Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. The concert, titled “The Fugue” displays the artistry of the internationally renowned ensemble through three dynamic pieces for string quartet.

Featuring W.A. Mozart’s Adagio and Fugue in C minor, K. 546; Bartok’s String Quartet No. 1, Op. 7; and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 13 in B-flat Major, Op. 130 and 133 — this performance concludes the first half of the Ariel Quartet’s four-part concert series at CCM. The talented string musicians will present two more concerts at CCM on January 21 and March 10, 2020.

The concert on October 22 features Beethoven’s Große Fuge (or “Great Fugue”), which the Ariel Quartet performed in its debut Beethoven cycle at CCM in the 2013-14 performance season. Arts reporter Janelle Gelfand praised the ensemble’s performance: “From start to finish, the musicians wonderfully captured Beethoven’s emotional grit and fire, coupled with some of the most sublime music ever written.”

Described by the American Record Guide as “a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power,” the Ariel Quartet has earned a glowing international reputation. The ensemble is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The group was formed in Israel in 1998 and has served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence since 2012.

CCM Stages Award-Winning Mystery ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’

The CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents this moving coming-of-age tale about the challenges and wonders of life on Oct. 17-20, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

CCM continues its new CCMONSTAGE Play Series with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, playing Oct. 17-20 in Cohen Family Studio Theater. Winner of the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play, the production is based on the novel by Mark Haddon and adapted for the stage by Simon Stephens.

The story focuses on 15-year-old Christopher and how he uses his extraordinary brain to navigate everyday life. He is exceptional at mathematics, but has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road. He detests being touched and he distrusts strangers, overwhelmed by sensory overload.

When Christopher finds his neighbor’s dead dog, he becomes determined to solve the mystery and find the murderer. His detective work takes him on a thrilling journey through London that overturns his entire world.

“Christopher is a hero on a hero’s journey,” says CCM Acting Professor Richard E. Hess, director of the play. “He teaches us about courage, about resilience, about curiosity and about hope. This play is a revelation, a magical journey to the heart.”

CCM Jazz Honors Legacy of John Von Ohlen in ‘Swinging with Woody Herman’ Concert

The CCMONSTAGE Jazz Series opens with the inaugural John Von Ohlen Memorial Scholarship Concert on Sunday, Sept 22, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

CCM begins its new, five-part big band Jazz Subscription Series with the CCM Jazz Orchestra this Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, in Corbett Auditorium.

The concert celebrates the life and legacy of Cincinnati jazz legend John Von Ohlen, who drummed with Stan Kenton and Woody Herman. Featuring Woody Herman Band alumnus John Fedchock, the concert showcases the hard-swinging music of Herman’s Thundering Herd! This memorial concert raises scholarship funds in Von Ohlen’s honor.

The performance on September 22 marks the beginning of a new, five-part big band jazz subscription series featuring the CCM Jazz Orchestra and Jazz Lab Band. Future concerts showcase the music of Stevie Wonder with guest artist Tyshawn Colquitt, Duke Ellington’s Nutcracker Suite with CCM Musical Theatre student dancers, the annual Essentially Ellington Gala Concert and a Frank Sinatra concert with guest artist Steve Lippia. Oscar Wilde’s Classic Comedy ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan’ Opens CCM’s 2019-20 Play Series

The CCMONSTAGE Play Series presents Wilde’s 19th-century satire about marriage, sex and gender politics on Oct. 2 (preview)-6, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

CCM opens its new CCMONSTAGE Play Series with Oscar Wilde’s Lady Windermere’s Fan, playing Oct. 3-6 with a preview performance on Wednesday, Oct. 2. Dubbed “smart, funny” by the San Francisco Chronicle, this 19th-century satire connects with modern audiences with its biting criticism of a hypocritical society.

“The play examines a time when reputation, gossip and social status were made and lost in the ballrooms and drawing rooms of the Victorian home,” says CCM Acting Professor Susan Felder, director of the production. “Social media moved slower, but it was still as rampant, reactive and harsh as a Twitter account.”

The play opens with plans for Lady Windermere’s coming of age party at 21 years old, but a rumor that her husband is having an affair with a mysterious woman taints the celebration. As she navigates through the Victorian double standards for men and women, Lady Windermere develops an altered understanding of what it means to be “respectable” and “good.”

Ariel Quartet Begins 2019-20 Concert Series with ‘Darkness and Light’

The internationally acclaimed ensemble opens its CCMONSTAGE concert series with an evening of works by Joseph Haydn, Tan Dun and Franz Schubert on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019. Tickets are on sale now.

Praised by the New York Times for its “full-blooded, dynamic playing,” the Ariel Quartet opens its new CCMONSTAGE concert series on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2019, at CCM’s intimate Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. The concert, titled “Darkness and Light,” explores the concept of contrast and colors by taking audiences on a musical journey.

Featuring Haydn’s String Quartet in D Minor, Op. 76, No. 2, “Fifths;” Dun’s Eight Colors for String Quartet; and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14 in D Minor, D. 810, “Death and the Maiden” — this performance is just the beginning of the Ariel Quartet’s four-part concert series at CCM. The talented string musicians will present three other concerts at CCM during the 2019-20 season on October 22, January 21 and March 10.

Described by the American Record Guide as “a consummate ensemble gifted with utter musicality and remarkable interpretive power,” the Ariel Quartet has earned a glowing international reputation. The ensemble is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The group was formed in Israel in 1998 and has served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence since 2012.

Soprano Amy Johnson joins forces with Kathleen Kelly, marking Kelly’s first faculty recital since joining CCM in 2018. This recital features the world premiere of Judith Shatin’s mono-drama, Patterns, written for Johnson and based on Amy Lowell’s eponymous poem. Other selections include George Crumb’s Three Early Songs, three works by Richard Hundley and a pastiche grouping of Elinor Remick Warren, Madeleine Dring, Katherine Hoover and Ricky Ian Gordan. Each segment offers settings of poetry by early 20th-century luminaries Sara Teasdale, Edna St. Vincent Millay and Anna Wickham as well as Lowell.

Mitchell has been described by The Times as “one of the UK’s liveliest musical forces and foremost violinists” and has performed in 50 countries. CCM’s Box Office is open Mon-Fri from 12:30-6 p.m., Sat. from 12-4 p.m. and one hour prior to curtain for ticketed performances. Hours subject to change based on the University of Cincinnati calendar.

CCM Student Ticket Options

Advance Sales

Want to guarantee your seat? Current CCM students can purchase up to two tickets for each 2019-20 CCMONSTAGE concert and production at the discounted rate of just $5 per ticket. Tickets must be purchased in person at the CCM Box Office. A valid student ID is required. 

Rush Tickets

Current CCM students also have the opportunity to attend most CCMONSTAGE events at no charge through student rush. CCM student rush tickets become available two days before each concert performance and one hour prior to the start of each theatre arts (dance, plays, musicals, opera) performance. CCM student rush tickets subject to availability. Tickets must be requested in person at the CCM Box Office. A valid student ID is required.

Parking and Directions

Parking is available in the CCM Garage (located at the base of Corry Boulevard off Jefferson Avenue) and additional garages throughout the UC campus. CCMONSTAGE patrons can order prepaid parking at $8 for each fall performance selected. Prepaid parking is date/performance specific. CCM Garage parking rates for fall performances or special events is usually available for $8-$15.
