CCM Philharmonia Presents Powerful Works by Beethoven and Mahler on Jan. 31

“The Long Goodbye” features Beethoven’s Piano Sonata “Les Adieux” & Mahler’s Symphony No. 9. Tickets available online

The CCM Philharmonia opens its 2020 CCMONSTAGE Orchestra Series with “The Long Goodbye” at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 31 in Corbett Auditorium. The performance features Beethoven’s emotionally powerful Piano Sonata E-flat Major, Op. 81a, “Les Adieux” and Mahler’s ninth — and final — Symphony in D Major.

Led by CCM Director of Orchestral Studies Mark Gibson, the CCM Philharmonia’s concert features passionate masterworks performed by the college’s student stars. Beethoven’s “Les Adieux” sonata, completed in 1810, was inspired by the composer’s sadness as his friend Archduke Rudolph fled the country during Napoleon’s siege of Vienna. The work is praised for its “extraordinary power and imagination” in “dealing with the emotions of separation and, ultimately, reunion — music meant to be heard with the eyes and heart as well as the ears” (NPR Music).

Mahler’s Symphony No. 9, completed in 1910, is the composer’s final completed symphony and is often considered as foreshadowing his death, which occurred before the work was premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. It is described in the Guardian’s “50 Greatest Symphonies” series as both a “hymn to the end of all things” and as an “ultimately affirmative love song to life and to mortality.”

Tickets to “The Long Goodbye” are on sale now through the CCM Box Office. The performance on Jan. 31 marks the continuation of the 2019-20 CCMONSTAGE Orchestra Series. The series concludes on Feb. 15 with a special concert by the CCM Philharmonia featuring guest conductor Louis Langrée, Music Director of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.

GIVING VOICE TO A FOXTROT FROM AUSCHWITZ-BIRKENAU
Patricia Hall, University of Michigan School of Music
The Collections Department of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum preserves a number of manuscripts of popular songs arranged by members of the Auschwitz I men’s orchestra. These songs, written with great care in black ink on Beethoven Papier brand music paper, often bear highly ironic, but also tragically relevant titles: “Letters That Never Arrived,” “Hours That One Can Never Forget,” “Sing a Song When You’re Sad.” Hall describes the complex process of realizing one of these songs, “Die schönste Zeit des Lebens” (The Most Beautiful Time of Life) from a manuscript deposited in the Collections Department in 1975, to a concert performance and recording in 2018. Originally a 1941 popular song composed by the German film composer Franz Grothe with a text by Willi Dehmel, it has been arranged for four first violins, five second violins, a viola, two clarinets, a trombone and a tuba. During Hall’s presentation, she will play a recording of the foxtrot performed by SMTD’s Contemporary Directions Ensemble, conducted by Oriol Sans.

First Look: CCMONSTAGE ‘The Bartered Bride’

CCMONSTAGE Opera’s production of The Bartered Bride continues tonight, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 24, at Patricia Corbett Theater. This romantic comedy composed by Bedřich Smetana features a new English translation by CCM faculty member Kathleen Kelly. Get your first look at the opera in the slideshow below.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Part bubbly operetta and part Bohemian folk pageant, CCM sets The Bartered Bride in a Czech community in Texas in 1948. Mařenka is arranged to marry the son of a rich landowner, but she is in love with someone else. Defiantly, Mařenka vows before her parents that she will only accept her love, Jeník, as her husband. As her parents and the matchmaker fight for the arranged marriage, the young lovers fight against tradition in order to be together.

“This story lends itself wonderfully to being shaped from a modern point of view,” says CCM Artist Diploma student Audrey Chait, director of the opera. “This production explores what it means to be a young American immigrant, preserving the traditions of the old country while embracing a new way of life.”

CCM’s production is conducted by guest artist and CCM alumnus Levi Hammer and features a new English singing libretto by CCM Opera faculty member Kathleen Kelly. The opera’s original libretto is by Karel Sabina. The process of translation and adaptation started between Kelly and Chait in the summer. In order to make the translation more authentic to the immigrant experience, some text is left in the original Czech.

“In the spirit of realism, the folk songs are sung as-is, as are moments when characters do not want to filter their most urgent thoughts through a second language,” Chait adds.

Movers and Makers magazine named CCM’s production of The Bartered Bride a “must see” event of Cincinnati’s music and opera of the fall season. Read more about this season’s Opera Series in The News Record.

The 2019-20 CCMONSTAGE Opera Series presents The Bartered Bride on Nov. 22-24, 2019, at Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office; student discounts are available.

The demand is high for CCMONSTAGE‘s 2019-20 musical theatre productions. After experiencing the college’s production of 42nd Street last week, ArtsWave dubbed CCM as “the jewel in the Queen City’s crown.” The League of Cincinnati Theatres beckoned audiences to “come see the future of Broadway at CCM and get a first look at the next generation headed to the Great White Way.”

After The Rocky Horror Show closes, you only have one more chance to see CCM’s musical theatre stars in action during the 2019-20 performance season. The next big musical presented by CCM is The Secret Garden, which runs March 5-8, 2020 in Corbett Auditorium. Tickets for CCM’s spring production of Bright Star (April 2-5, 2020) are currently booked up!

The Secret Garden is a “turn-of-the-century fairy tale” (Los Angeles Times) that won three Tony Awards and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical. Centered on an orphaned girl and her ailing cousin, the musical offers a magical tale of forgiveness and renewal. Learn more about the musical and purchase tickets while you still can!

Guest Conductor and Alum Leslie B. Dunner Joins CCM Orchestras in Halloween Concert

The CCM Philharmonia and Chamber Orchestra present “CSI Halloween: Post Mortem” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1. Tickets available through the CCM Box Office.

The CCM Philharmonia and Chamber Orchestra continue the CCMONSTAGE Orchestra Series with a Halloween-inspired performance at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 1 in Corbett Auditorium. Featuring guest conductor and distinguished alumnus Leslie B. Dunner as the “chief medical examiner,” CSI Halloween Post-Mortem resurrects well-known works by Franz Liszt, Benjamin Britten and Camille Saint-Saëns.

The ghostly performance features Liszt’s Totentanz (Dance of Death), which was inspired by the composer’s fascination with death and by his visits to the Paris gallows. The concert also includes Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the “Dead” Animals, featuring 14 ravenous movements such as “Death March of the Lion” and “Torture-oises.” For the grand finale, Britten’s “Dead” Person’s Guide to the Orchestra “dissects” the different sections of the orchestra.

CCM welcomes back alumnus Leslie B. Dunner (DMA, ’82) for the November 1 concert. An award-winning conductor with a glowing international reputation, Dunner is the Music Director of the South Shore Opera Company in Chicago and serves as the conductor of the Interlochen Arts Academy Orchestra, the World Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Interlochen Arts Camp. Read more about Dunner’s accomplishments below.
