Enjoy a digital performance by the CCM Ballet Ensemble on March 20

CCM Dance provides a “travelogue” of classical and contemporary works during this installment of CCM’s virtual performance series!

The fourth episode of CCMONSTAGE Online debuts at 7:30 p.m. EDT on Saturday, March 20, 2021. The premiere will stream simultaneously on CCM’s websiteYouTube channel and Facebook page.

Travelogue is a 90-minute long virtual performance featuring the CCM Ballet Ensemble. “Travelogue is a mixed repertory performance featuring a vivid array of classical and contemporary ballet, modern and jazz works,” explains CCM Dance Department Chair Shauna Steele, who directs the performance. “As we sat and planned our potential fall season during the unprecedented coronavirus shutdown in spring 2020, we kept returning to the idea that dance is community, it is catharsis, and it is vitally essential, thus Travelogue … where we as the artists could share through a visual medium places and experiences encountered by a ‘traveler.’ It can let us visit people, communities, myths, legends and monumental moments in our shared history allowing the audience to travel without moving.”

The program opens with Les Sylphides, with choreography by Mikhail Fokine restaged by CCM faculty member Deirdre Carberry. This popular one-act Romantic ballet is set to the music of Frédéric Chopin.

The concert features three premieres choreographed by CCM faculty members: Handel Concerto choreographed by Thomas BellThe Space Between choreographed by Shauna Steele and Death and the Maiden choreographed by Jiang Qi.

The performance concludes with August Bournonville’s iconic Napoli restaged by CCM faculty member Tricia Sundbeck. Subtitled “The Fisherman and His Bride,” this ballet depicts a love story in a small Italian fishing village and is celebrated for its solos. Steele explains: “In Napoli, we see through the eyes of August Bournonville, who visited a small Italian village in 1841, and was so enchanted that he created a composition that would forever capture that joyous, bright day and coincidentally created an enduring and touching ballet.”

A collaboration with CCM’s Department of Theatre Design and ProductionTravelogue also features scenic designs by CCM student Karissa Hodge and lighting and projection designs by CCM student Ian MacIntosh.

Like other episodes in CCM’s new virtual performance series, Travelogue features commentary from CCM students and faculty. All episodes of CCMONSTAGE Online can be digitally streamed for free. After the premiere broadcast, each installment in this ongoing series will remain available for on-demand viewing on CCM’s websiteYouTube channel and Facebook page.

Choreographers

August Bournonville (1805-1879)

Born in Copenhagen, August Bournonville was a dancer and choreographer who directed the Royal Danish Ballet for nearly 50 years and established the Danish style based on bravura dancing and expressive mime. He studied under his father, Antoine Bournonville, one of the major dancers of his day, before going to Paris for further training under Auguste Vestris and Pierre Gardel. After appearances at the Paris Opera and in London, Bournonville returned to Copenhagen as soloist and choreographer for the Royal Danish Ballet. A strong dancer with excellent elevation and an accomplished mime, he emphasized these qualities in his ballets. His choreographic style also reflected the pre-Romantic approach of his teacher Vestris. Many of his ballets have remained in the repertoire of the Royal Danish Ballet for more than a century. Bournonville also directed the Swedish Royal Opera at Stockholm (1861-64) and staged several of his works in Vienna (1855-56). In 1877, after his return to Denmark, he retired and was knighted. He died on November 30, 1879 in Copenhagen.


Mikhail Fokine (1880-1942)

Born in St Petersburg, Russian choreographer Mikhail Fokine trained at the Imperial Ballet Academy before joining the Mariinsky Theatre. In 1904 he became a premier danseur and the following year he created his first choreographic work, Acis and Galatea, for a pupils’ performance, and The Dying Swan, which would become Anna Pavlova’s most famous role. Fokine was engaged by Diaghilev for his 1909 Paris season and created Le Pavillon d’ArmidePolovtsian DancesLes Sylphides, and Cleopâtre. He worked for some time for both the Imperial Theatre and for Diaghilev; he did not return to Russia after 1918. For Diaghilev his works include Le CarnavalSheherazadeFirebirdLe Spectre de la roseNarcissePetrushkaPapillons, and The Golden Cockerel. When he left Diaghilev’s company he worked as a freelance choreographer, creating new works and reviving his successes. He settled in the USA, where he worked with several dance companies, and in musical theatre and film. The Fokine American Ballet Company made its debut in 1924. Fokine, however, spent much of his time in Europe, and in 1936 was engaged as choreographer-in-chief by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, where he created three successful ballets – L’Épreuve d’amourDon Juan (both 1936) and Les Éléments (1937). He died in 1942, having created more than sixty works.

Shauna Steele Is Named Associate Professor of Dance and Chair of Dance Department at CCM

CCM Dean Stanley E. Romanstein has announced the appointment of arts administrator, educator, performer and choreographer Shauna Steele to the college’s dance faculty. Steele’s appointment as Associate Professor of Dance and Chair of the Dance Department begins on Aug. 15, 2019.

An administrator and educator with nearly two decades of experience, Steele most recently taught at Michigan’s Hope College where she taught dance history and criticism, jazz, modern, improvisation, assisted the historic and social dance sections, and mentored Student Dance Showcase choreographers. From 2011-18 Steele served as the Dance Program Director and Associate Professor of Dance at Anderson University in Indiana.

“I am excited by ongoing education, both that which I teach and that which I learn from my students,” Steele says. “I find challenge and reward in teaching and am inspired by my students and the movement that grows from class sessions, both academic and technique.”

She is the founder and artistic director of Mocha Dance Project – which pursues projects engaging the fusion of photography, video, dance and collaboration – and was the Associate Director for RusticGroove Dance.

Her research interests include dance in world culture and context, Africanized movement in the Diaspora of Western culture (specifically Afro-Cuban and Afro-Caribbean), the influences of Celtic traditions on art and movement, the function of art in restricted or repressed environments, and body movement logic. She was the artistic director of Parallel Differences youth dance and the Associate Instructor for the Indiana University African American Arts Institute’s dance company. Her choreography has appeared in Robert Hay-Smith’s Pollen: The Musical, RADfest, The Tank NYC, Midwest RADfest, the Arizona Positivity Project and the Ypsilanti Fringe Festival. She has taught master classes in Roots of Jazz Dance and served as dance faculty at Grand Valley State University, Eastern Michigan University, Anderson University and the University of Michigan’s MPulse summer dance institute. She has lead master classes and workshops in improvisational movement, African dance, modern dance, jazz, Afro-jazz and hip hop. Her professional credits include Windfall Dancers, African American Dance Company, Dancers Studio Inc., Sancocho: Musica and Dance Collage and Ann Arbor Dance Works. She has performed in Robin Wilson’s Slave Moth, in Alexandra Beller’s Reasons for Moving and in Gay Delanghe’s Motor Tango/Tangle.

Her past projects include Millstones in August 2010 and The Positivity Project in Tempe, Arizona in October 2010. Her current choreography projects include Disobedient Objects/Caged Bird Legacy (a site-specific work), Sacred Ground (an evening length concert in three parts), /ˈākər/ (which delves into compulsive behavior and the need to sort, measure and catalogue), Leyenda in Winter (a dance for camera work), Still Frame (a video dance project) and Passengers (a contemporary modern work).

A published dance scholar, Steele’s co-authored textbook Experiencing Dance: A Creative Approach to Dance Appreciation (2011) examines the ever-changing culture of dance and provides a basic historical context and appreciation of dance as an art form. Her research articles include Exploring Choreographic Responsibility through the ‘Cultural Lens’ (2013); Drawing Parallel Lines: Dance, Architecture, and Society (2009); and Drawing Parallel Lines in Dance, Architecture, and Society: African American Modern Dance, and Jewish Deconstructivist Architecture (2006), among others.

Steele received her MFA in Dance Choreography and Performance with a focus area in History and Technology from the University of Michigan in 2006, and a BGS in Arts and Humanities with a focus area in Cultural Anthropology and Dance from Indiana University in 2002. She is a member of the American College Dance Association, World Dance Alliance and the National Dance Education Organization.

CCM Dance Presents ‘Cinderella’ Fairytale Ballet

A timeless fairytale romance, Cinderella “is among the most rewardingly rewatchable and relistenable ballets ever made” (New York Times).

CCM’s Mainstage Series presents Sergei Prokofiev’s romantic Cinderella ballet on Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28, 2019 at Patricia Corbett Theater. Choreographed by Artistic Director of the Dayton Ballet Karen Russo Burke, the production’s ensemble director is Michael Tevlin.

Cinderella is known for its jubilant melodies, lush scenery and graceful retelling of the timeless fairytale romance by Charles Perrault. A poor girl wishes to escape her evil stepmother and stepsisters, so her fairy godmother gives her a ticket to the ball! The girl meets prince charming and they fall in love, but she vanishes when the clock strikes midnight. CCM’s production of the beloved ballet features the college’s talented dance students as well as Dayton Ballet guest artist Ivan Braatz as the prince.

Burke has cast male dancers as the ugly stepsisters in CCM’s production of Cinderella, a convention that originates from Sir Frederick Ashton’s popular staging of the ballet for The Royal Ballet. Burke watched Ashton’s Cinderella choreography on TV as a young girl and was mesmerized by the performance. “Audiences were shocked to see such physical comedy in a ballet,” she remembers.

CCM Mainstage Dance Presents Arpino’s ‘Birthday Variations’

CCM Dance celebrates the art of motion with a mixed-repertoire dance concert on Dec. 6-9, 2018. Tickets on sale now.

CCM presents a mixed-repertoire dance production culminating with Birthday Variations, choreographed by Gerald Arpino, co-founder of the Joffrey Ballet, and restaged by Nicole Duffy Robertson of the New York Dance Project. Directed by CCM Dance Professor Deirdre Carberry, the performance runs Dec. 6-9, 2018 in Patricia Corbett Theater.

Arpino’s Birthday Variations features music by Giuseppe Verdi and was restaged for CCM by Duffy, a répétiteur for the Gerald Arpino Foundation. This ballet premiered in 1986, just two years before Arpino took over the Joffrey Ballet as artistic director upon Robert Joffrey’s death. Anna Kisselgoff of the New York Times describes the work as “a sparkling showpiece of classical dancing” that is “set to some of Verdi’s infectious opera-ballet music.”

The mixed-repertoire performance also showcases “Kitri’s Wedding” from Act III of Ludwig Minkus’ Don Quixote, which premiered at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theatre in 1869, with choreography by Marius Petipa and restaged by Carberry.

“This work is one of the most famous, enduring and exciting ballet adaptations in the classical repertoire,” says Jiang Qi, chair of CCM’s Dance Department, in his program notes for the production.

Three short pieces originally choreographed by CCM Dance will also take place during this program. The first is Bridges, a work by CCM Dance Professor Michael Tevlin, with music by Benjamin Britten. This piece describes seven types of bridge, from truss to arch to suspension, through dance.

After Bridges is senior CCM Dance student Hope Friedman’s Volume IV, which features original choreography to contemporary music like Marian Hill’s Down and Wax Tailor’s Que Sera. It is an “exploration of what it means to be ‘normal’ and our connections with those around us,” Qi says.

Then CCM Dance presents Apertures and Vistas, choreographed by Judith Mikita, visiting assistant professor of dance. Mikita has worked with CCM Percussion Professor and Percussion Group Cincinnati member James Culley to develop a landscape of inventive movement with improvised accompaniment by four CCM percussion students.

This scintillating production is on stage Dec. 6-9, 2018 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Tickets are on sale now through the CCM Box Office; student discounts are available. Birthday Variations will last one hour and 45 minutes, including a 15-minute intermission.

CCM Welcomes Judith Mikita As Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance

Judith Mikita

CCM Interim Dean bruce mcclung has announced the appointment of Judith Mikita to the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Dance, with a focus in modern choreography. Mikita has served as an adjunct dance instructor at CCM for more than 20 years. Her new appointment will officially begin on Aug. 15, 2018.

Mikita is a choreographer and performer with more than 30 years of professional experience. Her choreography has been presented by the American Dance Festival, the New York International Independent Film Festival, Cincinnati’s Aronoff Center and the Biagiotti Art Gallery in Florence, Italy, among others. She has also choreographed for Cincinnati’s Contemporary Dance Theatre, Ensemble Theatre, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cleveland Fringe Festival, Covington’s Carnegie Art Center and New York’s White Mountain Dance Festival.

As an artist and educator, Mikita has served on the faculties of the University of Chicago, Columbia College and Antioch College and as artist-in-residence at Wright State University and the University of Utah. She has also choreographed at Miami University, Northern Kentucky University and Interlochen Center for the Arts.

As a performer, Mikita has toured nationally with the Chicago-based dance companies of Shirley Mordine, Jan Erkert and Bob Eisen. She has worked with Martha Clarke of Pilobolus Dance Theatre, Lucas Hoving of the José Limón Dance Company, Marnie Thomas of the Martha Graham Dance Company and Gus Solomons, Jr. of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company.

Mikita is a founding member of the Greater Cincinnati Dance Alliance and has served on the board of directors for OhioDance and Cincinnati’s Contemporary Dance Theater. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Dance from Indiana University and a Master of Fine Arts in Dance from University of Michigan.

On the announcement of Mikita’s appointment, mcclung commented:

“Judith Mikita’s extensive experience in modern dance and professional work with arts institutions, festivals and dance companies throughout the country will benefit CCM’s BFA students in refining their contemporary dance technique.”

Senior Ballet Student Gives Final CCM Performance in Legends of Dance

Senior ballet student Emma Webb is finishing up her time at CCM with a role that many dancers only dream of performing: the principal role of Nikiya in “The Kingdom of the Shades,” an excerpt from La Bayadère. She will dance the role alongside Cincinnati Ballet guest artist Derek Brockington during CCM’s upcoming Mainstage Dance production, Legends of Dance, which runs from April 12 through April 14 in Corbett Auditorium.

“Dancing and training for this principal role was one of the most difficult and inspiring experiences that shaped me at CCM,” Webb says. “It helped transform my dancing and it allowed me to gain maturity and understanding of what kind of dancer I want to be onstage.”

“This physically and artistically difficult pas de deux feels like a culmination of everything that I have been training for, and I cannot wait to share all that I have become and to share what I love to do in my last performance at CCM.”

The program also includes a restaging of José Limón’s A Choreographic Offering by guest choreographer Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba. Although this work is set to music by J. S. Bach, the dance itself uses much more modern language. Webb is also in the company for this piece.

“It has many challenging choreographic motifs and is filled with entirely different movements compared to classical ballet,” Webb says. “As a ballet dancer, taking off the pointe shoes to be barefoot and to move with a grounded quality was such an exciting experiment and transformation.”

Legends of Dance also includes the finale of The Sleeping Beauty, with music by Tchaikovsky and choreography by Marius Petipa. Each of these works holds a place in today’s dance repertoire and has something unique to offer potential audience members.

“The production as a whole includes wonderful mixed repertoire suitable for everyone and demonstrates what we as dancers practice and work hard for every day of our lives as artists,” Webb says.

While she’s very excited about the Legends of Dance production, Webb’s favorite ballet during her time at CCM was Swan Lake during the 2015-16 Mainstage season.

“My roles in Swan Lake included lead Czardas, swan corps, four tall swans and lead waltz girl,” she remembers. “Dancing all of those roles in one of my favorite ballets with live music and custom-made tutus was so rewarding after all of the hard work in the studio.  The entire production created extremely memorable moments dancing alongside so many talented students.”

One of Webb’s favorite parts of the dance program at CCM has been the daily ballet technique class she takes with other dance majors, especially because of the guidance and encouragement she received from CCM dance faculty.

“There was emphasis on attending every single day of class ready to work, and it really pushed me to be better,” Webb adds. “There were so many great and inspiring perspectives and talented teachers that profoundly impacted my professional development.”

After her graduation at the end of this semester, Webb plans to continue to pursue a career in dance performance; she has taken several professional auditions already, although she is unsure which dance company she will be a part of in the fall.  In addition to her BFA in Ballet, Webb has earned a minor in Business Management.

CCM Mainstage Presents Legends of Dance on April 12-14

CCM Mainstage Dance presents Legends of Dance.

CCM Dance makes its return to the newly renovated Corbett Auditorium with a mixed repertoire concert, featuring the CCM Concert Orchestra and guest artists from the Cincinnati Ballet.

The Dance Department at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music brings the Sesquicentennial Mainstage Series to a stunning conclusion with its mixed repertoire concert Legends of Dance. The production runs Thursday, April 12, 2018, through Saturday, April 14, 2018, and celebrates the Mainstage Series’ return to CCM’s newly renovated Corbett Auditorium.

Directed by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi with music direction by Aik Khai Pung, Legends of Dance features the CCM Ballet Ensemble with accompaniment from the CCM Concert Orchestra. The performance features two guest artists from the Cincinnati Ballet — soloist David Morse and Derek E. Brockington of the Cincinnati Ballet’s Second Company.

“The high caliber of these two professional dancers not only elevates the performances, but also provides an excellent experience and learning opportunity for CCM’s student dancers,” Jiang says.

Beginning with one of the most celebrated pieces in all of classical ballet, the production opens with “The Kingdom of the Shades” from Act II of Marius Petipa’s La Bayadère, with music by Ludwig Minkus.

“From its first performance, the ballet was hailed by critics as one of Petipa’s supreme masterpieces,” Jiang says. “’The Kingdom of the Shades’ scene was regularly extracted from the full-length work as an independent showpiece for the ballet stages around the world, and it has remained so to the present day.”

The second piece is A Choreographic Offering by American modern dance pioneer José Limón, set to music by Johann Sebastian Bach. The piece was restaged for CCM’s performance by guest artist Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba, a former dancer and teacher for the José Limón Dance Foundation.

The performance concludes with “Aurora’s Wedding” from Act III of Petipa’s The Sleeping Beauty, set to music by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Sleeping Beauty is considered one of the most popular classical ballets in the world, Jiang says.

“Aurora’s Wedding is frequently presented by the world’s leading ballet companies because of its colorful fairytale characters and the exquisite showcase of Aurora and the Prince’s grand pas de deux.”

Dance Students Debut New Moves in CCM’s Choreographer Showcase

Student Choreographers Showcase

CCM Dance students present original choreography in the annual Student Choreographer Showcase on March 1-3, 2018 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free but reservations are required; tickets become available at noon on Monday, Feb. 26 through the CCM Box Office.

The Choreographer Showcase is directed by Assistant Professor of Dance André Megerdichian and presents an exciting mixed bill of choreography from classical ballet to contemporary dance. The featured student choreographers are Molly-Grace Lewis, Brenna Sweeny, Hope Friedman, Amelia Harris, Alexandria Wright, Hannah Holtsclaw and Erin Donnelly.

Students are reimagining what can be done on point shoes and are commissioning original music for their choreography, Megerdichian says. They have collaborated with CCM set and lighting designers and are “pushing the boundaries of expected norms.”

“The works are bold, imaginative and incredibly moving,” Megerdichian adds. “The sheer variety of work combined and their emotional resonance will keep audiences at the edge of their seats. It’s a beautiful show.”

CCM Celebrates 150th Anniversary With Must-See Mainstage Series

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) marks the 150th anniversary of its founding with a year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration beginning in the fall of 2017. Commemorating a tradition of innovation and excellence dating back to the founding of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1867, CCM’s Sesquicentennial programming includes eight must-see masterworks presented as part of the 2017-18 Mainstage Series.

Between Sept. 27, 2017, and April 14, 2018, CCM’s stars of tomorrow and world-class faculty and staff members will stage eight diverse productions. This year’s Mainstage Series includes cherished classics like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide and Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

Now lauded as one of Bernstein’s most characteristic theatrical creations, CCM’s stars of tomorrow proudly present Candide as part of a world-wide celebration leading up to Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday. CCM’s highly innovative staging of the opera utilizes a stark, one-room set design that leans into the theatricality of the show. The artistry of CCM students and Leonard Bernstein’s extraordinary score will guide audiences’ imagination as they journey through Voltaire’s “best of all possible worlds” with verve and satirical humor. Presented in conjunction with the official Leonard Bernstein at 100 centennial celebration.

CCM’s Department of Dance opens this anniversary season with a concert of mixed repertoire featuring the enchanting The Little Mermaid choreographed by guest artist and Missouri Ballet Theatre director Adam Sage with music by Léo Delibes and Antonín Dvoràk. The concert also showcases Paquita (Act II) with music by Ludwig Minkus, restaged by Deirdre Carberry. Additional highlights include the world premiere of Shaker Loops, choreographed by André Megerdichian and featuring music by John Adams performed by CCM’s Café MoMus ensemble. This premiere will also include an illuminated collaboration with DAAP faculty member Henry Hildebrandt.

In this fast-moving kaleidoscope, more than 100 characters try to make sense of what they know. The play explores the prevalence of technology in today’s culture, the thirst for knowledge and the importance of human connection.

What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is based on the last week of Jesus’ life. Set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events, the story is told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. A true global phenomenon, the iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.”

LEGENDS OF DANCE

Celebrate spring’s arrival with the CCM Ballet Ensemble as they present an exciting mixed bill accompanied by the CCM Concert Orchestra. The program includes one of the most celebrated excerpts in all classical ballets, “The Kingdom of the Shades” from La Bayadére, staged by CCM faculty member Deirdre Carberry with music by Ludwig Minkus. In addition, guest artist Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba will restage José Limón’s masterful A Choreographic Offering set to music by J. S. Bach. The program’s rousing finale features The Sleeping Beauty (Act III), after Marius Petipa’s classical ballet with music by Tchaikovsky.

The 2017-18 CCM Mainstage Series of acting, musical theatre, opera and dance productions includes subscription packages for combinations of six-or-more shows, four-shows or three-shows.

Renewal subscription packages are on sale now. CCM’s fully customizable subscription packages range in price from $69 – $188. Subscribers to CCM’s 2016-17 Mainstage Series can receive priority access to seating by renewing their subscriptions by July 7, 2017.

Subscription packages for new subscribers go on sale July 10, 2017. Single tickets go on sale beginning Sept. 5, 2017.

CCM Sesquicentennial Performances and Concert Series Options

CCM will present additional special events and public performances celebrating its Sesquicentennial throughout the 2017-18 concert season. As the largest single source of performing arts events in Ohio, CCM will also present its typical lineup of chamber music, choral, jazz, orchestra, percussion, piano and wind ensemble concerts each season.

Beginning in January of 2018, the CCM Sesquicentennial will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial with a collection of performances by students and faculty artists from throughout the college. Subscribers get first access to the Leonard Bernstein Experience, which includes concerts and special events held in the spring and fall of 2018 as part of a world-wide celebration of Bernstein’s 100th birthday.

CCM’s Mainstage subscribers receive priority access to the Bernstein Experience, Ariel Quartet subscription packages, CCM Concert Series flex ticket packages, prepaid parking and other exclusive perks.
