Here is your sneak peek at CCM’s Mainstage Series production of Candide, presented in conjunction with the world-wide Leonard Bernstein at 100 centennial celebration. CCM’s 150th Anniversary Mainstage Series Presents Leonard Bernstein’s ‘Candide’

CCM’s innovative staging of this classic opera highlights the artistry of the college’s “stars of tomorrow” and Bernstein’s extraordinary score.

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) continues its Sesquicentennial Mainstage Series with Candide, presented in conjunction with the world-wide Leonard Bernstein at 100 centennial celebration. Conducted by Mark Gibson with stage direction by Emma Griffin, the opera runs Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017, through Sunday, Nov. 19, 2017, in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

Based on Voltaire’s biting satirical novella of the same name, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide follows a naïve young man as he searches for the meaning of life in a cruel and chaotic world. First performed on Broadway in 1956 and then revised in 1973, the comic operetta won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award and multiple Drama Desk and Tony Awards. The opera’s energetic overture and the aria “Glitter and Be Gay” quickly became classics in their own time.

CCM’s innovative new production of Candide uses a mysterious, one-room set design that inspires the theatricality of the show. The performance will guide audiences’ imaginations as they journey through Voltaire’s “best of all possible worlds” with verve and humor.

“CCM’s highly imaginative staging of this classic opera-musical is part of a long performance tradition of presenting Candide as a theatrically inventive show,” Griffin says. “In our production, we’ve given the performers a blank canvas with which to create a world of heightened theatricality and magical realism.”

The production’s cast includes students from CCM’s opera, voice, musical theatre and acting programs, who use various items that are at hand to transform themselves and their surroundings in order to tell the story.

“Candide is a dark, funny satirical tale about the dangers of an unexamined world view,” Griffin says. “Pushing through the humor and the showbiz pizazz of the piece is the vital question: What do people do in times of cultural uncertainty?”

“Our answer is: We make joyful art, raucous and rich and strange, full of life and beauty.”

Alumna Katie Johannigman Returns to CCM as Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre

CCM Interim Dean bruce d. mcclung welcomes alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012) to the college’s illustrious faculty. As Visiting Adjunct Assistant Professor of Musical Theatre, Johannigman will choreograph three of CCM’s 2017-18 productions, and teach tap and jazz dance to students.

Johannigman’s connection to CCM spans three generations of her family. Her grandmother and father took piano lessons at the college, and her sister was enrolled in ballet classes through CCM Preparatory for her entire childhood. Johannigman says she started watching her sister’s dance classes at CCM when she was 9 months old and didn’t leave the college until she graduated with her BFA.

“I am extremely honored and excited to return home to the school where I learned to walk, and eventually sing, dance and act,” Johannigman says. “I am thrilled to pass on my experiences as a professional to the next generation of artists in whatever way I can. In my 20 years of training at CCM, an array of wonderful and patient teachers generously shared their time, energy and knowledge. I am so grateful for this opportunity to join their ranks.”

Johannigman began her performing career when she was in the eighth grade by joining the National Tour of Oliver!. As a CCM student, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and studied at the Second City Training Center in Chicago. After graduating, Johannigman served as Artistic Director at the Broadway Method Academy in Connecticut.

Her professional credits include Thoroughly Modern Millie and Pirates! at the Muny, The Light in the Piazza and Anything Goes at Lincolnshire Marriott, Mary Poppins at Kansas City Straight Theatre, Company at the Gallery Players, and Cats and Chicago at the West Virginia Public Theatre.

As a choreographer, Johannigman’s work has appeared at the Connecticut Repertory Theater, The Human Race Theater and the Broadway Method Academy. At CCM she choreographed the Musical Theatre Studio Series productions of They Were You in 2016 and Out of This World in 2011.

This fall, Johannigman will choreograph the Studio Series production of Sondheim on Sondheim (October 5-7) and the Mainstage production of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide (November 16-19). In the spring, she will direct and choreograph the Studio Series production of The Theory of Relativity (March 29-31).

CCM Celebrates 150th Anniversary With Must-See Mainstage Series

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) marks the 150th anniversary of its founding with a year-long Sesquicentennial Celebration beginning in the fall of 2017. Commemorating a tradition of innovation and excellence dating back to the founding of the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1867, CCM’s Sesquicentennial programming includes eight must-see masterworks presented as part of the 2017-18 Mainstage Series.

Between Sept. 27, 2017, and April 14, 2018, CCM’s stars of tomorrow and world-class faculty and staff members will stage eight diverse productions. This year’s Mainstage Series includes cherished classics like William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Leonard Bernstein’s Candide and Andrew Lloyd Weber and Tim Rice’s Jesus Christ Superstar.

CCM’s Sesquicentennial lineup also includes an opera double-bill featuring Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Suor Angelica, two mixed-repertoire ballet productions and the Mainstage Series debuts of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens’ Seussical and Caryl Churchill’s Love and Information.

The Mainstage Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which will also include world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. The Tony Award-winning team of Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Anastasia, Once on This Island, Ragtime) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, Lazy Mayzie and a little boy with a big imagination – Jojo. CCM’s Department of Dance opens this anniversary season with a concert of mixed repertoire featuring the enchanting The Little Mermaid choreographed by guest artist and Missouri Ballet Theatre director Adam Sage with music by Léo Delibes and Antonín Dvoràk. The concert also showcases Paquita (Act II) with music by Ludwig Minkus, restaged by Deirdre Carberry. Additional highlights include the world premiere of Shaker Loops, choreographed by André Megerdichian and featuring music by John Adams performed by CCM’s Café MoMus ensemble. This premiere will also include an illuminated collaboration with DAAP faculty member Henry Hildebrandt.

In this fast-moving kaleidoscope, more than 100 characters try to make sense of what they know. The play explores the prevalence of technology in today’s culture, the thirst for knowledge and the importance of human connection.

What’s the buzz? The first musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice to be produced for the professional stage, Jesus Christ Superstar has wowed audiences for over 40 years. A timeless work, the rock opera is based on the last week of Jesus’ life. Set against the backdrop of an extraordinary and universally-known series of events, the story is told through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. A true global phenomenon, the iconic 1970s rock score contains such well-known numbers as “Superstar,” “I Don’t Know How to Love Him” and “Gethsemane.”

LEGENDS OF DANCE

Celebrate spring’s arrival with the CCM Ballet Ensemble as they present an exciting mixed bill accompanied by the CCM Concert Orchestra. The program includes one of the most celebrated excerpts in all classical ballets, “The Kingdom of the Shades” from La Bayadére, staged by CCM faculty member Deirdre Carberry with music by Ludwig Minkus. In addition, guest artist Pablo Francisco Ruvalcaba will restage José Limón’s masterful A Choreographic Offering set to music by J. S. Bach. The program’s rousing finale features The Sleeping Beauty (Act III), after Marius Petipa’s classical ballet with music by Tchaikovsky.

CCM Sesquicentennial Performances and Concert Series Options
CCM will present additional special events and public performances celebrating its Sesquicentennial throughout the 2017-18 concert season. As the largest single source of performing arts events in Ohio, CCM will also present its typical lineup of chamber music, choral, jazz, orchestra, percussion, piano and wind ensemble concerts each season.

Beginning in January of 2018, the CCM Sesquicentennial will celebrate Leonard Bernstein’s centennial with a collection of performances by students and faculty artists from throughout the college. Subscribers get first access to the Leonard Bernstein Experience, which includes concerts and special events held in the spring and fall of 2018 as part of a world-wide celebration of Bernstein’s 100th birthday.

CCM’s Wind Series Honors American Icon Leonard Bernstein, the Art of the American Symphony and More This Fall

Composer, conductor, author and pianist Leonard Bernstein.

CCM’s Department of Wind Studies turns its spotlight on the American composer this fall. From Sept. 21 through Dec. 3, CCM’s Wind Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Chamber Players present a variety of exciting concerts, including several free performances.

Under the direction of Professor Glenn D. Price, the CCM Wind Orchestra opens its season at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, with a celebration of American icon Leonard Bernstein, featuring music from West Side Story, Candide and more.

“It’s hard to believe that it was almost exactly 24 years ago that he passed away,” Price observes. “I was studying at Tanglewood at the time, in no small part because he was going to be there. He conducted what turned out to be his final two concerts for us, in the Shed with the Tanglewood Orchestra, and two days later with the BSO.”

Price honors this American legend with a program of some of Bernstein’s most popular compositions, including Slava, “Suite” from Candide, “Profanation” from Symphony No. 1, ”A Simple Song” from Mass and “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story.

“I am using this opportunity to enlighten our students who were born into a post-Bernstein world about the richness that he provided to many of us. Visiting his music in depth is a great luxury, and one that I hope is meaningful for them,” explains Price.

Following this touching tribute, Price constructs his very own “American Symphony” at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, in Corbett Auditorium, taking pieces from four symphonies by four American composers – Vittorio Giannini, John Barnes Chance, Ingolf Dahl and James Barnes – and creating a new musical mosaic from their works.

The Winds Orchestra Series closes with “War and Peace,” a bombastic evening of Barber’s Commando March, Rautaavara’s A Soldier’s Mass, Gilmore’s Five Folksongs for Soprano, Husa’s Music for Prague 1968 and Reed’s Rejoicing in the Beauty of Peace at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Corbett Auditorium.
