CCM brings its yearlong Leonard Bernstein at 100 Festival to a grand finale with a series of events running Oct. 26-Nov. 4, 2018, culminating with a rare concert performance of Stan Kenton’s Grammy Award-winning instrumental version of Bernstein’s West Side Story score.
Leonard Bernstein at 100 is the world-wide celebration of the 100th birthday of Bernstein and his monumental career as a composer, conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador and humanitarian. CCM’s “Lenny Week” begins with a Thinking About Music lecture on Mahler, Bernstein and Jewish Identity by guest scholar Matthew Mugmon on Friday, Oct. 26, in UC’s Albino Gorno Memorial CCM Library. It continues with a free screening of Gene Kelly’s On the Town on Monday, Oct. 29, at MainStreet Cinema in UC’s Tangeman University Center.
On Wednesday, Oct. 31, the CCM Wind Symphony presents “Bernstein and Friends,” featuring faculty artist and CSO clarinetist Ronald Aufmann in Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs. The concert also showcases works by the composers most associated with the cultural icon, including Copland’s Lincoln Portrait, narrated by CCM Dean Stanley Romanstein.
Pianopalooza celebrates Lenny on Thursday, Nov. 1, with a concert by CCM’s Piano Department. The program features Bernstein’s Symphonic Dances from West Side Story played by faculty artists Michael Chertock and James Tocco, who will also play Bernstein’s arrangement of Aaron Copland’s El Salón México.
The CCM Philharmonia presents Bernstein’s Fancy Free and excerpts from Songfest on Friday, Nov. 2. CCM Director of Orchestra Studies Mark Gibson, who studied with Bernstein at the Tanglewood Music Center as the Bernstein Conducting Fellow in 1986, conducts the concert.
Guest conductor Vaughn Wiester leads the CCM Jazz Orchestra in Stan Kenton’s West Side Story on Sunday, Nov. 4. This Prestige concert is presented in loving memory of Stan Kenton Orchestra member, Cincinnati jazz drummer and CCM faculty member John Von Ohlen, who passed away on Oct. 3, 2018. Co-founder of the Blue Wisp Big Band, Ohlen was also a featured soloist with the Woody Herman, Ralph Marterie and Billy Maxted orchestras. He taught at CCM for more than 30 years, most recently as a leader of Jazz Combo and a drum instructor in fall 2017. During his career as a jazz musician, Ohlen played extended tours with Urbie Green, Holiday on Ice, Broadway pit orchestras, Tony Bennet, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney and many others.

MINI-FILM FESTIVAL: ON THE TOWN
Directed and choreographed by Gene Kelly, On the Town is a 1949 musical film with music by Leonard Bernstein and Roger Edens. It was adapted from the Broadway stage musical of the same name and stars Kelly, Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin as fun-loving sailors who are on a 24-hour leave in New York City.

The performance also showcases excerpts from Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 and Symphony No. 4, including Das himmlische Leben, which the Philharmonia dedicates in memory of CCM alumna and former voice faculty member Barbara Clark (Paver).

CCM’s Bernstein Celebration continues with this rare performance of Stan Kenton’s West Side Story. This is the record that gave Kenton his first Grammy Award and introduced the band to a whole new generation of listeners. Guest conductor and Stan Kenton scholar Vaughn Wiester will also present a pre-concert talk at 6:15 p.m. in Corbett Auditorium. This performance is presented in loving memory of Stan Kenton Orchestra member, Cincinnati jazz legend and longtime CCM faculty member John Von Ohlen.
