CCM’s Mainstage Series brings Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s beloved musical to life in Corbett Auditorium tonight through Sunday, Nov. 21. Setting the Stage for CCM’s “Evita”

In theatre, timing is everything. That couldn’t be more true for the cast and crew of CCM’s Evita, as they finalize all the details that go into a Mainstage musical production. Later this weekend, a crew of about 60 will load in the large sets, including the installment of a black floor comprised of about 96 four-by-eight-foot wood planks. Then there is the large movie screen that flies in that must be timed perfectly to align with the projection, along with sound effects, lighting, and other special effects that must seamlessly fit into the production.

CCM’s Musical Theatre department kicks off its Mainstage Season with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera Evita. This vivacious show runs from November 17 (preview) through November 21 in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium on the University of Cincinnati campus.

Winner of seven Tony Awards, Evita brings to life the dynamic, larger-than-life persona of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator, Juan Perón. Her huge political influence and widespread charity catapulted her into the hearts of the working class, but enraged the wealthy and the military of Argentina. This exuberant production creates a gripping theatrical experience and features the memorable songs “High Flying, Adored” and the legendary “Don’t Cry For Me, Argentina,” putting into music the unfortunately short life of the unofficial heroine of Argentina.

CCM celebrates the 40th anniversary of its musical theatre program with the American Tribal Love/Rock Musical, Hair! Amid the counter-culture revolution of the Age of Aquarius, a tribe of hippies and flower children stage a pacifist rebellion against the Vietnam War and the constraints of the Establishment. They are forced to examine their own beliefs and dreams in this provocative, groundbreaking and profoundly moving musical celebration. Premiered in 1968—the same year the CCM musical theater program was established—Hair is currently enjoying a wildly successful Broadway revival.
