Pick up today’s edition of Cincinnati CityBeat for a first look at both this week’s regional premiere of Benjamin Britten’s opera Owen Wingrave and next Tuesday’s public reading of the Opera Fusion new work Fellow Travelers.

When asked about the scenic design of Owen Wingrave, stage director Kenneth Shaw tells CityBeat‘s Anne Arenstein, “We’re doing a lot with light and suggestions of scenery. Our student designers are incredible. We do this kind of transition all the time here.”

CCM’s acclaimed 2012-13 Mainstage Series comes to a close this week with a colorful new production of Mozart’s beloved comedic singspiel The Magic Flute. This production runs April 4–7 in UC’s Corbett Auditorium.

Janelle Gelfand Reviews CCM’s Latest Opera Fusion Workshop

The Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand shares her thoughts on our latest Opera Fusion workshop production, Morning Star, in today’s installment of the Arts in Focus blog. You can read her review here.

CCM and Cincinnati Opera presented public workshop performances of Ricky Ian Gordon and William M. Hoffman‘s Morning Star earlier this week. The workshop was filmed for a forthcoming documentary focusing on Opera Fusion: New Works, funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Opera Fusion: New Works is generously funded by a $300,000 grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Cincinnati Enquirer’s Jackie Demaline Reviews CCM’s ‘Street Scene’

Jackie Demaline reviews CCM’s first-ever production of Street Scene for the Cincinnati Enquirer, proclaiming: “It’s a glorious synthesis by composer Kurt Weill and the artistic team and their company of singers and musicians deliver a production that will stand as a high point of the Cincinnati stage season.” Running tonight through Nov. 18 in UC’s Patricia Corbett Theater, Street Scene is part of CCM’s year-long Kurt Weill Festival.

Janelle Gelfand’s ‘Arts in Focus’ Features CCM Alumna Xian Zhang

Earlier this week, the Cincinnati Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand profiled former CCM student and faculty member Xian Zhang.

Zhang made history as the first female music director of an Italian orchestra when she was named director of Milan’s Orchestra Verdi in 2009.

Students From CCM’s Starling Program Featured on NPR’s ‘From the Top’

This month, NPR‘s popular program From the Top will feature students from CCM’s Starling String Project, who were taped at the Great Wall International Music Academy in Beijing last summer.

From the Top host Christopher O’Riley travelled to China to tape two concerts led by CCM’s Kurt Sassmannshaus, which will air at 9 a.m. on Nov. 10 and Nov. 17 on Cincinnati’s WGUC (90.9 FM)!

Star-Studded Jazz Series Continues This Week At CCM

Earlier this week on her Arts in Focus blog, the Enquirer‘s Janelle Gelfand recapped Cincinnati native Fred Hersch’s intimate recital at CCM, performed before a packed house in Corbett Auditorium.

CCM Jazz’s spring concert series continues at 7 p.m. this Sunday, April 8, as Grammy Award-winner Bob Belden and Grammy-nominee Tim Hagans join CCM’s Jazz Ensemble and Philharmonia Orchestra to present Belden’s acclaimed masterpiece Black Dahlia.

CCM Singer Advances to Met Opera Nationals

Congratulations to mezzo-soprano Audrey Walstrom, one of two singers to win first prize in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Auditions held at the Music Institute of Chicago last weekend. Walstrom, who shared first place with baritone Ryan Milstead, will advance to the national semifinals in March. Janelle Gelfand provides more details here.
