Dance Students Debut New Moves in CCM’s Choreographer Showcase

CCM Dance students present original choreography in the annual Student Choreographer Showcase on March 1-3, 2018 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free but reservations are required; tickets become available at noon on Monday, Feb. 26 through the CCM Box Office.

The Choreographer Showcase is directed by Assistant Professor of Dance André Megerdichian and presents an exciting mixed bill of choreography from classical ballet to contemporary dance. The featured student choreographers are Molly-Grace Lewis, Brenna Sweeny, Hope Friedman, Amelia Harris, Alexandria Wright, Hannah Holtsclaw and Erin Donnelly.

Students are reimagining what can be done on point shoes and are commissioning original music for their choreography, Megerdichian says. They have collaborated with CCM set and lighting designers and are “pushing the boundaries of expected norms.”

“The works are bold, imaginative and incredibly moving,” Megerdichian adds. “The sheer variety of work combined and their emotional resonance will keep audiences at the edge of their seats. It’s a beautiful show.”

CCM Announces Sesquicentennial Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera

CCM presents nine eclectic and electrifying productions as part of its 150th Anniversary Studio Series of Acting, Dance, Musical Theatre and Opera. This annual series of performing and media arts events features CCM’s acclaimed “stars of tomorrow” in a collection of scaled-down stagings set in the Cohen Family Studio Theater and other intimate performance spaces.

Composer, lyricist, playwright and CCM alumnus Todd Almond.

The 2017-18 series opens in October with the musical revue Sondheim on Sondheim, which showcases the songs of legendary musical theatre composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim. In November, CCM proudly presents The Earth is Flat, a touching coming-of-age story written by CCM alumnus Todd Almond (BM, 1999) and set in UC’s Calhoun Hall. November also sees the return of the 48-Hour Film Festival, which showcases 10 student-created short films produced over the course of a single weekend.

The series continues in early 2018 with productions of the operas Trouble in Tahiti, The Telephone, Tale for a Deaf Ear and Ariodante. CCM’s popular Dance Student Choreographers’ Showcase and TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student-Created New Works both return in March. The 150th Anniversary Studio Series concludes in Spring 2018 with the unconventional and moving musical drama The Theory of Relativity (directed and choreographed by CCM alumna Katie Johannigman) and the debut of an original 60-minute play created by CCM Acting for the 71st Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Studio Series is just one part of the yearlong CCM Sesquicentennial Celebration, which includes world premieres, guest artist performances, a series of off-campus concerts and a one-of-a-kind alumni showcase event. The CCM Sesquicentennial celebrates the work of accomplished alumnus Todd Almond! A love letter to the University of Cincinnati written by Almond, The Earth is Flat explores the universal awkwardness of the American college experience. The search for identity by those least prepared with answers resonates with unexpected comedy in this new play commissioned by CCM Acting as part of the Cincinnati Playwrights Conference in 2016. A coming-of-age story set in Calhoun Hall, The Earth is Flat follows purple-haired Ethan as he takes his first tentative steps toward self-knowledge.

Written between Bernstein’s biggest Broadway successes, Trouble in Tahiti draws upon popular song styles to deliver an uncompromising critique of Mid-century American marriage. TRANSMIGRATION, so named for “the movement from one place to another” or “the transition from one state of being to another,” is a festival of new works created by the students in CCM Acting. CCM Behind-the-Scenes: Dancing in Masterworks and Beyond

Shae Combs, a photojournalism student from UC’s McMicken College, films behind-the-scenes as CCM Dance faculty and students prepare for the Mainstage production of Masterworks and Beyond. Co-directed by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi and Professor Deirdre Carberry, performances run Thursday, April 13-Saturday, April 15, in CCM’s Patricia Corbett Theater.

Masterworks and Beyond is a collection of diverse works, which showcase the versatility of the students and faculty in CCM’s Department of Dance. Combs focuses her lens on the creation of Day of Wakening Over the Sea of Night, which premieres during Masterworks and Beyond. The new ballet is choreographed by CCM Professor André Megerdichian and set to music by CCM composition alumnus and accompanist Bradley Harris. CCM Dance student Dominique Neff is featured in Combs’ work.

“Working with everyone in CCM has been a dream,” said Combs, who interns at the Cincinnati Enquirer this summer. “From the stage manager Chelsea Taylor, to André, Dominique and the rest of the dancers, I’ve received nothing but warm welcomes and excitement. I’ve loved getting to watch and document everything come together in the last couple of weeks. You can truly see the hard work and dedication that went into the piece.”

CCM’s 2016-17 Mainstage Series Concludes with Dance Masterworks and Beyond

UC’s College-Conservatory of Music concludes its 2016-17 Mainstage Series with Masterworks and Beyond, performed by the Department of Dance on Thursday, April 13-Saturday, April 15 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Co-directed by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi and Associate Professor Deirdre Carberry, the performance features a mixed bill of contemporary and classical ballet.

Alongside a selection of traditional and new works, Masterworks and Beyond includes the world premiere of day of wakening over the sea of night, with choreography by CCM Assistant Professor André Megerdichian and music by CCM composition alumnus and accompanist Bradley Harris.

The program begins with George Balanchine’s masterwork Valse-Fantaisie, a classic ballet set to music by Mikhail Glinka. CCM’s performance is restaged by guest artist Viki Psihoyos, who works with the George Balanchine Trust to offer Balanchine Technique Workshops. Up next in Masterworks and Beyond is Flower Festival, with music composed by Edvard Helsted and choreography by August Bournonville. This one-act ballet is restaged by Qi and Carberry.

The program continues with two works that feature brand new choreography. CCM Associate Professor Michael Tevlin choreographs Revelries, a new traditional ballet performed with music by Gaetano Donizetti. Guest artist Roger Van Fleteren, who is the Associate Artistic Director and Resident Choreographer of the Alabama Ballet Company, choreographs “unRAVELed” a new contemporary ballet with music by Maurice Ravel.

The grand finale of the program is the world premiere of day of wakening over the sea of night. Inspired by Joseph Campbell’s mythological writings, this new work is a viscerally engaging, athletically mesmerizing landscape of contemporary dance. The piece features a reimagined stage space, which creates a shifted perspective, heightened by live musicians with a mystic world groove.

Masterworks and Beyond is a collection of diverse works, which showcase the versatility of the students and faculty in CCM’s Department of Dance. Tickets are available for purchase through the CCM Box Office.

CCM Announces 2016-17 Studio Series of Opera, Musical Theatre, Dance and Acting Productions

All-time favorites and daring new works receive equal billing during CCM’s 2016-17 Studio Series. This year’s 13-part series of performing and media arts events features an eclectic mix of opera, musical theatre, dance and acting productions, all featuring CCM’s acclaimed “stars-of-tomorrow.”

CCM’s Studio Series opens with Elizabeth Swados’ RUNAWAYS, co-produced with Know Theatre of Cincinnati.

Season highlights include Elizabeth Swados’ powerful and rarely-seen musical Runaways co-produced with Know Theatre of Cincinnati and two world-premieres produced by the Opera Fusion: New Works Lab in partnership with Cincinnati Opera.

CCM’s Department of Musical Theatre also presents the world-premiere of a musical revue showcasing the work of legendary Broadway collaborators Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt. Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg, the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM, They Were You: The Songs of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt features songs from throughout the celebrated duo’s oeuvre.

This year’s lineup also includes the return of two popular festivals, the 48-Hour Film Festival and the TRANSMIGRATION Festival of Student-Created Plays.

Funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work! Adapted by Lynn Nottage from her prize-winning 2003 play of the same name, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a 35-year-old seamstress in 1905 New York City. Esther sews lingerie for a living, interacting with a wealthy Fifth Avenue wife, a Tenderloin prostitute and a Jewish fabric merchant on the Lower East Side, with whom she shares a closeness that cannot be pursued further because of his religion. Esther embarks on a letter-writing relationship with a Panama Canal laborer, leading to marriage and ultimately heartbreak, but she maintains her strength of character and determination to make a better life for herself.

One year after her funeral, her friends meet for their annual Fourth of July reunion. Very Dumb Kids explores entitlement and how its effects are visited upon the disenfranchised as well as the privileged. But it’s also about empowerment, exploring how to live responsibly in an irresponsible universe. Join CCM Acting as we embark on our new play commissioning initiative: plays that speak to the unique experience that is being young in America; plays that are written for and about our students; plays that will go on to be produced by educational institutions and professional theater companies all over the country; plays that will involve a new generation of artists and audiences. Funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work! Adapted by Lynn Nottage from her prize-winning 2003 play of the same name, Intimate Apparel tells the story of Esther, a 35-year-old seamstress in 1905 New York City. Esther sews lingerie for a living, interacting with a wealthy Fifth Avenue wife, a Tenderloin prostitute and a Jewish fabric merchant on the Lower East Side, with whom she shares a closeness that cannot be pursued further because of his religion. Esther embarks on a letter-writing relationship with a Panama Canal laborer, leading to marriage and ultimately heartbreak, but she maintains her strength of character and determination to make a better life for herself.

When the clock strikes 12, though, she vanishes… leaving only a single shoe behind. Jules Massenet’s elegant score brings wit and charm to this timeless romance based on Charles Perrault’s telling of the Cinderella fairy tale. CCM’s Department of Dance opens its performance season with a concert of mixed repertoire featuring alumnus James Cunningham of the Cincinnati Ballet, who will choreograph a new work La Nymph with music by Youngwon French. Highlights also include a performance of Schubert’s Winterreise with choreography by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi and accompaniment by CCM students Yijia Fang, cello and Xinyuan Li, piano. In addition, the graceful performers from CCM Dance will mount a staging of Glazunov’s Scènes de Ballet with choreography by Associate Professor Michael Tevlin, and Assistant Professor André Megerdichian will choreograph a collage of dance scenes spanning diverse genres.

CCM Dance Presents Lavish New Production of Enduring Classic Ballet ‘Swan Lake’ April 22-24, 2016

CCM’s Department of Dance presents Tchaikovsky’s timeless ballet, Swan Lake, April 22-24 in Corbett Auditorium. Co-directed by Dance Department Chair Jiang Qi and Associate Professor of Dance Deirdre Carberry, the Mainstage Series production features students from CCM’s BFA Ballet program, which Dance Magazine has hailed as one of the country’s “top programs to consider.” The lavishly staged spectacle features accompaniment by CCM’s lauded Concert Orchestra under the direction of Assistant Professor of Music Aik Khai Pung.

A tale of unending love and haunting mystery, Swan Lake is one of the most well-known fables of our time. The classic Russian ballet is performed in four acts and tells the story of Odette, a maiden turned into a swan by the evil sorcerer, Von Rothbart.

Disinterested in potential love matches arranged by his mother, Prince Siegfried is in search of a wife when he stumbles upon Odette during a night hunt. The two fall madly in love but their romance is hindered by Odette’s curse – which forces her and her fellow maidens to become swans by day and human by night.

Swan Lake marks only the second time in CCM’s nearly 150-year history that a full-length story ballet has been included in the Mainstage Series. As a result, this production features brand new costumes designed and built in-house, which is actually a CCM first.

Costume Design and Technology Program Head Dean Mogle spent 18 months on the creation of Swan Lake’s intricate costumes. For the past 40 years, Mogle has designed for numerous drama, musical theatre, opera and dance productions, including the Cincinnati Ballet’s The Nutcracker.

“The ballet world is a totally different beast,” Mogle said of the challenging costume designs. “In dance, it’s all about the body and movement.”

In addition to the famous white swan costumes traditionally associated with the ballet, the story will come to life with vibrant colors and rich fabrics adorning the talented performers of CCM Dance. In particular, keep an eye out for the intricately designed costumes worn by Prince Siegfried’s potential wives on display during the opulent ball in Act III.

For this production, the iconic role of Odette will be performed by dance majors Yu-Ting Huang (on Friday and Sunday) and Madison Holschuh (on Saturday).

Guest artist Patric Palkens, appearing by permission of the Cincinnati Ballet, will perform as Prince Siegfried in the Friday and Sunday performances of Swan Lake. Palkens joined the Cincinnati Ballet in 2011 and was promoted to Principal Dancer in 2015. He returns to Cincinnati after spending a year in Europe with Salzburg State Theater Austria Dance.

The ballet will also feature Assistant Professor of Dance André Megerdichian, who will dance the role of evil sorcerer Von Rothbart. Megerdichian has performed professionally over two decades with such companies and choreographers as the Jose Limón Dance company, Janis Brenner and Dancers, The Mary Anthony Dance Theatre, Soundance Repertory Company, Reidel Dance Theatre, Daniel Charon and Sean Curran.

CCM Dance Presents Student Choreographers’ Showcase March 3 – 5, 2016

CCM’s Department of Dance proudly presents the annual Dance Student Choreographers’ Showcase in the intimate Cohen Family Studio Theater from March 3 – 5, 2016. Dance Department faculty members Andre Megerdichian and Michael Tevlin will direct the diverse collection of student-produced pieces. Admission is free, but reservations are required.

This year’s showcase features the new works of six talented undergraduate choreographers. To be selected for this highly competitive program, students submitted proposals and performed brief selections from their pieces several months ago.

“We were looking for maturity and thoughtfulness. Essentially we were investing in potential,” says Megerdichian. This year’s talented crop includes Jake Elwell, Brooke Fabian, Sterling Faust, Brianna Levy, Kiahna Saneshige and Emma Webb.

Outgoing senior Brianna Levy is one of the talented student-choreographers who will be featured. Her contemporary ballet piece for eight dancers is titled Within Dreams.

Levy explains, “I’ve had the idea to choreograph a dance revolving around dreams for a long time, and the fact that I am nearing the conclusion of my education at CCM makes this the perfect time to bring this piece to life.”

She continues, “We are the most uninhibited in our dreams, they grant us the ability to explore any and all worlds, allow us to express our deepest fears, present a means to revisit the past and give voice to our most secret desires and aspirations. Dreams provide the driving force behind our daily lives – if not for our dreams, what would we be living for?”

The dance is divided into three sections, all featuring music by The Album Leaf (a solo music project inspired by classical, jazz and post-rock electronica). “The first section presents an entrance into the dream world, introducing the more exploratory and wondrous side of dreams. The second section, featuring a pas de deux, revolves around dreams of longing, love and loss. The third and final section takes a look at the more celebratory aspect of dreams – dreams that inspire us to strive and achieve, that transcend the world of sleep to our waking reality,” explains Levy.

Another young choreographer whose work will be showcased is sophomore Emma Webb. Webb, a Cincinnati native, is choreographing a contemporary ballet on pointe with 12 dancers titled Embracing the Battle. “The push and pull, ups and downs and turn of events in life were the inspiration for this piece,” remarks Webb. She says her choreographic style is designed to showcase the many talents of her fellow classmates. “I want to show off the dancers’ technique, but also allow them to put their artistic and expressive flair on each movement,” she says. “I am enjoying this process of working with such talented students!”

The rest of the concert features diverse works ranging from hip-hop dance to classical ballet; each piece is conceived and created by the students themselves.

Megerdichian remarks, “Our students are extremely talented and self-motivated, so we just make sure to have the resources in place to help them achieve their vision.”

ORCHESTRATIONAL SCENARIOS IN THE MUSIC OF SIBELIUS
Blair Johnston, Indiana University
Orchestration—and, with it, the roles that timbre plays in musical rhetoric, expressive trajectories, and the choices made by performers—deserves more attention from scholars than it has received. In an ongoing project, Blair Johnston is examining the rich ways that orchestrational choices in post-Romantic symphonic works interact with the “structures” described by more conventional music analysis, an area that features music-theoretic vocabularies that do not always allow for easy discussion of certain dimensions of sound—in broad terms, its shapes, its colors, its densities—that are especially essential in music from this era. This talk will explore this through the use of late symphonic works by Sibelius (excerpts from the Fifth, Sixth, and Seventh Symphonies and Tapiola), music in which complex approaches to musical form and material are fused to a highly individual orchestrational language—indeed, music in which there may be almost no line between form, material and timbre.

When the three disgruntled men flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, their paths diverge when Tunny enters the armed forces, Michael is called back home to attend familial responsibilities, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot features minimal dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line. This production contains mature subject matter, including references to drug use, sexual content and profanity.

TRANSMIGRATION, so named for “the movement from one place to another” or “the transition from one state of being to another,” is a festival of new works created by the acting students in CCM Drama. Six teams of actors craft and perform five original 30-minute shows. Performed simultaneously in different locations throughout CCM Village, TRANSMIGRATION will allow the audience to sample four different new works of their choosing in one spectacular evening. “Thanks to the drama program at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music,” observed CityBeat’s Rick Pender, “theater fans were offered a jolt of onstage vitality.”

HEARING DOUBLE: JAZZ AND ONTOLOGY
Brian Kane, Yale University
Philosophers have often considered the ontology of music, worrying over the relation between works, scores and performances. Yet, surprisingly, jazz has not received the same consideration, even though jazz—where performances of works such as “standards” vary widely in their properties—represents an even more challenging ontological problem than found in classical music. In this talk, Brian Kane will argue for a non-essentialist, network-based ontology of jazz standards. This argument will depend on two basic operations—chains of replication and chains of nomination—that together provide a robust basis for judgments concerning a performance’s identity and individuation. Also, just as jazz is an exemplification of a network-based ontology of music, Kane will try to draw out some wider implications for the ontology of music more generally.

In Goethe’s Triumph der Empfindsamkeit (1777), sensibility, feeling and sympathy are brutally exposed as trivial obsessions with postures and props. Excess, bad taste and poor behavior are the focus of Goethe’s hilarious critique of the craze unleashed by his own Sorrows of Young Werther. Embodied in this strange and funny text is satire aimed not only at the cult of Empfindsamkeit and at the works of the artist himself, but also at the conspicuous blurring of public and private spheres, the untoward exposure of personal proclivities and private feeling. Given the ubiquitous textbook designation of C. P. E. Bach as the architect of the ‘Empfindsamer Stil’ in music, Dr. Annette Richards takes another look at what ‘Empfindsamkeit’ might mean, especially for the composer’s late keyboard works. By examining this music (along with then-contemporary views on humor, satire and other cultural elements), the audience may have to reconsider Bach’s own claims about the competing aesthetics of public and private music.
