Percussion Group Cincinnati presents concert at CCM this Friday

CCM ensemble-in-residence Percussion Group Cincinnati presents a musical tribute to composer Herbert Brün, a pioneer of electronic and computer music, to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of his birth. Featuring music by Brün, Eugene O’Brien and Frederic Rzewski, the free concert is at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, 2018, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater.

Recently inducted into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame, Percussion Group Cincinnati was founded in 1979 and consists of CCM faculty members Allen Otte (Emeritus, 2017), James Culley and Russell Burge.

The performance includes Brün’s More Dust with Percussion, which was originally composed as an electronic music piece, but the composer added percussion at Percussion Group Cincinnati’s request. The ensemble performed this piece during its first concert at CCM in 1979. The concert also includes Brün’s Touch and Go, which Otte will perform on a single tabletop with a large array of both traditional and unusual instruments. Ariel Quartet Performs Schumann, Bartók, Cage and Brahms on April 26

The Ariel Quartet gives its final performance in its 2017-18 CCM Concert Series at 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 26, 2018 in Corbett Auditorium. The performance includes string quartets by Robert Schumann, Béla Bartók and Johannes Brahms, along with John Cage’s Five, which features CCM emeritus faculty member Allen Otte, percussion.

Celebrating CCM’s 150th Anniversary season, the Ariel Quartet programed Five as a nod to John Cage’s time as CCM composer-in-residence from 1966-1967. The Quartet will be joined by Otte, who worked with and performed pieces by Cage with Percussion Group Cincinnati.

Composed in 1988, Five is one of Cage’s early so-called “number” pieces — fittingly scored for five instruments. The avant-garde composer “profoundly influenced 20th-centruy music,” says the Cincinnati Enquirer in a story about Cage’s time at CCM.

CCM’s Percussion Group Cincinnati Inducted into Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is proud to recognize ensemble-in-residence Percussion Group Cincinnati for its induction into the Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame. The ensemble, founded in 1979, consists of CCM faculty members Allen Otte (Emeritus, 2017), James Culley and Russell Burge.

Each year, the Percussive Arts Society chooses two to four individuals or groups to recognize as inductees into its hall of fame. This year, Percussion Group Cincinnati was selected alongside Andy Narell, Bobby Hutcherson and Zeferino Nandayapa. The Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be held Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Indiana Convention Center.

Percussion Group Cincinnati is especially well known for its relationship with and performances of music by John Cage, who had a residency at CCM in 1967.  The group also emphasizes the promotion of new music by fostering relationships with living composers, such as John Luther Adams and Qu Xiao-Song.

Their daily rehearsal schedule over the decades has been supplemented with teaching and coaching student musicians, many of whom have gone on to professional careers in creative music, in teaching and with major symphony orchestras. Percussion Group Cincinnati has appeared in performances in major cities, festivals, concert halls and schools of America, Europe and Asia. Recent performances include the Shanghai International Spring Music Festival, a tour of Japan, and the premiere of a new concerto in Singapore with the Singapore Chinese Instrument Orchestra.

In addition to performing around the world, Percussion Group Cincinnati has made many recordings on several record labels, including Mode Records and their own label, ars moderno. The group participated in Mode Records’ project to release all of Cage’s music by creating Works for Percussion 1, an album that features two versions of Credo in US and several of Cage’s Imaginary Landscapes.

Previous inductees into the PAS Hall of Fame include Ringo Starr, modern composer and percussionist Steve Reich, 20th century jazz drummer Warren “Baby” Dodds, a few timpanists of the greatest orchestras and many contributors to the industry of percussion equipment, including Vic Firth and several members of the Zildjian family.

The Percussive Arts Society Hall of Fame was established in 1972 and recognizes the contributions of the most highly regarded professional leaders in percussion performance, education, research, scholarship, administration, composition and the industry. Inductees demonstrate the highest ideals and professional integrity to their profession to bring about significant events, substantive improvements in the world of percussion and the betterment of the profession through exemplary services or acts.

The Percussive Arts Society, established in 1961, has approximately 5,000 members in over 68 chapters around the world. Its mission is to inspire, educate and support percussionists and drummers around the world. Learn more at www.pas.org.

CCM Announces 2017-18 Concert Schedule For The Ariel Quartet

The University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) proudly presents the award-winning Ariel String Quartet in a four-part concert series, which commences on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and continues on Nov. 14, March 20 and April 26. Dubbed “rock stars of the classical scene,” by the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Ariel Quartet’s energetic performances and soulful interpretations have impressed concert goers throughout the world.

The Ariel Quartet is comprised of Alexandra “Sasha” Kazovsky, violin; Amit Even-Tov, cello; Gershon Gerchikov, violin; and Jan Grüning, viola. The group was formed in Israel in 1998 and has served as CCM’s string quartet-in-residence since 2012.

The Ariel Quartet opens its 2017-18 concert series with a program dedicated to the memory of CCM Professor Emeritus Walter Levin at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the Robert J. Werner Recital Hall. A founding member and first violinist of the legendary LaSalle Quartet, Levin passed away in Chicago on Aug. 4, 2017, at the age of 92. During his 33-year tenure at CCM, Levin and his colleagues in the LaSalle Quartet greatly enhanced CCM’s international reputation while inspiring generations of future artists and scholars.

The members of the Ariel Quartet count themselves among the innumerable musicians influenced by Levin’s expertise. Prior to their residency at CCM, the members of the Ariel Quartet spent a formative year in Basel, Switzerland, studying with Levin. When the Ariel Quartet was named string quartet-in-residence at CCM in 2012, the appointment was seen as a natural extension of the LaSalle Quartet’s musical legacy. In the Chicago Sun-Times’ featured obituary, Gerchikov describes Levin as “incredibly influential, inspiring and demanding.” When Levin dispensed with a compliment, Gerchikov recalls, “You were in heaven.”

This season’s highlights also include collaborations with Donald Weilerstein, Vivian Hornik Weilerstein and CCM emeritus faculty member Allen Otte. The season also features the regional premiere of a new piece by John Harbison, co-commissioned by the Ariel Quartet with the generous support of Ann and Harry Santen. Retiring Faculty Members Share Memories:

This year marks my 48th year of continuous work — 21 years as a singer/actress, and another 20 years as a college professor and theatre producer. In 2009 my husband and I retired to Cincinnati, where I received an unexpected invitation to return to CCM — my alma mater — to teach musical theatre voice as an adjunct professor. These past seven years have been a total joy. I call it simply “the gift I gave myself.” As an older professional, it means so much to continue to contribute and feel appreciated. I’ve been truly honored to work with wonderful colleagues, and to have been given the opportunity to teach and mentor my talented and remarkable students. A number of my students surprised me in New York with a champagne brunch on April 2 to celebrate my retirement. I have no words to express what that meant to me, and the joy I feel, seeing them claim their places on Broadway and other stages, following their dreams. I would like to thank UC for recognizing and honoring the work of adjunct faculty. It is rare for a university to recognize adjunct contributions, and I salute UC for doing so. I’ll be forever grateful that I have been able to come full circle, and share the training I received at CCM with another generation of students. CCM is about to celebrate its 150th anniversary. I look forward to continuing to serve on the CCMPower board, raising money for scholarships, and helping to ensure that CCM will be here for another 150 years, training and graduating outstanding music professionals. – Kimberly Daniel de Acha

When I started fall 1975, DVAC was the Schmidlapp Gymnasium, Memorial was a women’s dorm, the main way to the garage was from Calhoun down to CCM garage — the connector tunnel didn’t exist. Werner Hall and Starbucks weren’t here and CCM had about half of the students it does now. It was an exciting time for me, as I was starting in LaSalle Quartet. We did four concerts a year in Corbett and two to four international tours a year. I worked with so many wonderful colleagues over all these years, some are sadly no longer with us. Almost my whole professional life has been at CCM, more than four decades worth of experiences. – Lee Fiser

There’s something a touch poetic for me about retiring along with Lee Fiser — the final retirement from the LaSalle String Quartet. I came to the CCM faculty as a quite young person. It was the Quartet who were instrumental in getting Percussion Group Cincinnati the appointment to CCM. Some of my strongest memories of that first decade here are the Quartet’s concerts on Corbett stage, and I endeavored to live up to the beautiful standards that they had set. I wanted a percussion group in the late 20th century to be able to function just as the greatest string quartets always had, and I am grateful to CCM for giving me and my colleagues that opportunity and support. – Allen Otte

CCM Percussion Ensembles Bring The Heat This Winter

CCM is proud to present a pair of diverse percussion concerts this semester featuring a musical trip to the Caribbean, original compositions by CCM students and much more.

A perennial fan favorite, CCM’s Spring Percussion Series kicks off at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30, with some Caribbean sunshine as the CCM Steel Drum Band presents its annual concert. A Trip to Trinidad and Back is an evening of traditional music from Trinidad, along with pop, folk and reggae compositions designed to warm up even the coldest of Cincinnati nights.

CityBeat Previews CCM’s Nov. 29 John Cage Centennial Celebration Concert

Steven Rosen previews CCM’s Nov. 29 Philharmonia and Percussion Group Cincinnati concert in this week’s issue of CityBeat. The concert concludes CCM’s month-long John Cage Centennial Celebration.

“CCM’s concert is special for Cage enthusiasts,” Rosen writes. “Percussion Group Cincinnati — a CCM ensemble-in-residence for 30-plus years — not only knew Cage (who died in 1992 at age 79), but he wrote the piece they will perform Thursday, ‘Music for Three,’ just for them back in 1984. The piece is written for three percussionists and 150 (!) instruments of their choice.”

CCM Celebrates Cage Centennial With November Events

CCM proudly presents performances and discussions throughout the month of November in honor of American composer John Cage’s 100th birthday.

The Cage Centennial Celebration commences with a week-long festival running Nov. 5-9, featuring unique collaborations between students and faculty from throughout CCM, along with a performance by Percussion Group Cincinnati. The celebration culminates on Thursday, Nov. 29, with the Philharmonia Orchestra’s annual “American Voices” concert.
