CCM’s Spring Piano Series Includes Acclaimed Guests, Renowned Faculty Artists and Gifted Student Musicians

World-class pianists perform at CCM throughout the semester as part of the Spring 2018 Piano Series. Featuring acclaimed guest and faculty artists as well as gifted student musicians, CCM’s Department of Keyboard Studies presents its piano series in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall at CCM.

The series begins on Thursday, January 11 with a free recital by guest artist Logan Skelton. An esteemed pianist, teacher and composer, Skelton has concertized widely in the United States, Europe and Asia. His CCM recital features Béla Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra, transcribed by Skelton himself. Currently a professor of piano at the University of Michigan, Skelton will hold a public master class featuring CCM piano students after the recital.

CCM Piano Professor Ran Dank holds a free recital on Monday, January 22, featuring Frederic Rzewski’s The People United Will Never Be Defeated!, which Dank recently performed at Chicago’s Mandel Hall. The Chicago Classical Review praised Dank’s performance and wrote that he “carried off this tortuously challenging work with dazzling bravura.”

On Sunday, February 4, CCM Faculty Artist Lydia Brown presents a free recital featuring works for piano by J.S. Bach, Schoenberg, Schubert and Haydn. In addition to serving as a music professor and opera/voice coach at CCM, Brown serves as an assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera. She has performed extensively as a soloist and collaborative pianist throughout the world.

Oberlin Conservatory of Music Piano Professors Angela Cheng and Alvin Chow visit CCM on Wednesday, February 21 for a free guest artist recital featuring Copland’s El Salón México, Debussy’s Petite Suite and Ravel’s La Valse. The duo will also hold a public master class featuring CCM piano students after the recital.

CCM’s Spring 2018 Piano Series concludes on Sunday, March 25 with the annual Pianopalooza concert. Featuring performances from some of CCM’s most gifted student pianists, the concert emphasizes romanticism and virtuosity. Tickets for Pianopalooza are on sale now through the CCM Box Office for $15 general, $10 non-UC students and free for UC students with a valid ID.

CCM’s World-Class Piano Faculty Welcomes ‘Fresh Sounds, Fresh Faces’ on Nov. 13

Two new piano professors add their individual flair to CCM’s annual Pianopalooza XII concert Fresh Sounds, Fresh Faces at 7 p.m. on November 13 in Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

In this annual display of stunning virtuosity, new faculty members Dror Biran and Ran Dank join the returning artists of CCM’s illustrious piano faculty on stage. Concert highlights include not one, but two Chopin Ballades — No. 3 in A-flat major and No. 4 in F minor —, an original work from CCM assistant professor of jazz students Stephen Allee and Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances for Piano Four-Hands.

Allee’s special appearance in this year’s program features his composition, Tippin’. In addition, Pianopalooza XII includes performances from piano faculty artists Michael Chertock, Soyeon Kate Lee, Awadagin Pratt and James Tocco as well as collaborative piano faculty member Sandra Rivers and visiting adjunct piano professor Andy Villemez.

About Dror Biran
Born in Israel, Biran is a graduate of the Givatayim Conservatory where he studied with Lily Dorfman, as well as the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel-Aviv University where he studied with Arie Vardi. Biran received his Doctoral degree from the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with Paul Schenly and Daniel Shapiro.

Biran has won top prizes at the M.K Ciurlionis International Piano Competition and the Cleveland International Piano Competition, where he also received a special prize for the best performance of works by Chopin. His honors include the first prize at the Pilar Bayona International Piano Competition (Zaragoza, Spain), first prize at the Israeli Rubin Academy Piano Competition and the Rafi Goralnik prize for pianists in the Aviv Competition. Biran has been a recipient of multiple scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation for distinguished musicians.

Biran has performed widely as a soloist with major orchestras including the Lithuanian Philharmonic Orchestra, RTVE Symphony Orchestra of Spain, Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra, Louisville Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. He has played under the batons of Etinger, Rodan, Gueller, Gacia Asensio, Mester, Lane and others. His concert tours have taken him to the United States, Israel and South America, along with Eastern and Western Europe.

About Ran Dank
A graduate of the Rubin Academy of Music at Tel Aviv University and the Juilliard School, Dank has worked extensively with Richard Goode, Emanuel Ax, Joseph Kalichstein, Ursula Oppens and Robert McDonald.

Dank performs in New York City’s most notable venues to frequent critical acclaim by the New York Times. In recent seasons, he has been heard in recitals in Town Hall and Symphony Space. As a soloist, he has performed Prokofiev’s Second Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall and Tobias Picker’s Keys to the City at Columbia University. In September of 2013 he and fellow CCM faculty member Soyeon Kate Lee performed the world premiere of Fredric Rzewski’s Four Hands at (le) Poisson Rouge to a glowing review by the New York Times.

A recipient of numerous honors, Dank won a coveted place on the Young Concert Artists’ roster in 2009 and subsequently made his New York recital debut. He is a laureate of the Cleveland International Piano Competition, where he also won the Bach Prize, the Naumburg and Sydney International Piano Competitions, and was the First Prize winner of the Hilton Head International Piano Competition.

CCM’s Bearcat Piano Festival Presents Guest Artists and Student Showcases March 29 – April 3, 2016

CCM showcases the world of classical piano this spring with the return of the annual Bearcat Piano Festival! The festivities begin on Tuesday, March 29, and conclude on Sunday, April 3 with the Piano-POW-Looza showcase featuring CCM’s own talented student performers. All events will take place in the intimate Robert J. Werner Recital Hall.

Launched in 2010 by CCM Professor of Piano and Artist-in-Residence Awadagin Pratt, this year’s festival invites several internationally acclaimed artists to the stage. Concert pianist Caroline Hong, hailed for her “expressive and powerful playing,” “formidable technique” and “keen sense of lyricism and the classical style” opens the series with a recital at 8 p.m. on Tuesday, March 29. Pulitzer Prize and Academy Award-winning composer John Corigliano referred to her as “one of the greatest pianists [he has] ever heard.”

Ann Schein performs a recital at 8 p.m. on April 1, followed by a master class at noon on April 2. “Thank heaven for Ann Schein,” the Washington Post observed of her talents, “what a relief it is to hear a pianist who, with no muss or fuss, simply reaches right into the heart of whatever she is playing—and creates music so powerful you cannot tear yourself away.” Stein served on the piano faculty of Peabody Conservatory from 1980-2001. In addition, she has been an artist-faculty member of the Aspen Music Festival and School since 1984, and served as a visiting faculty member at Indiana University from 2008-09.

This year’s Bearcat Piano Festival also sees the continuation of CCM’s collaboration with the University of Michigan’s doctoral piano program. This year, pianist and DMA student Azariah Tan performs at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 2. Tan is a highly acclaimed performer who has won top prizes at competitions including the American Prize in 2012, the WPTA International Piano Competition in 2013, the New York International Artists Association Piano Competition in 2014 and numerous others.

Finally, the 2016 Bearcat Piano Festival comes to a close with Piano-POW-looza at 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. Organized by Piano Department Chair Michael Chertock and curated by Andy Villemez and Sophie Wang the event spotlights the talents of a select few from CCM’s nearly 100 dazzling piano majors; these young artists will provide witty repartee and stunning performances in a triumphant conclusion to the series.

This series only happens once a year, so make sure to not miss out!

CCM’s Illustrious Piano Faculty Artists Celebrate Warm Music From Cold Countries on Nov. 15

Faculty performers receive the spotlight at CCM during the 11th annual Pianopalooza concert on Sunday, Nov. 15. This year’s program features CCM’s esteemed piano faculty artists performing a collection of fiery music from Russia and elsewhere.

In the spirit of the approaching winter season, this installment of Pianopalooza celebrates warm music from cold countries, including Chopin’s Winter Wind Étude, Edvarg Grieg’s In the Hall of the Mountain King and “Waltz of the Flowers” from the classic holiday favorite, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite.

The concert’s grand finale features a stunning 12-hand piano arrangement of “Mars” from Gustav Holst’s The Planets.

“During the chilliest winters, these composers have warmed our hearts and fired our imaginations,” explains CCM Piano Department Chair Michael Chertock. “This music celebrates the season, defies the cold, longs for spring and summer, and sometimes simply shivers.”

In addition to Chertock, who also serves as the concert’s master of ceremonies, Pianopalooza XI includes performances by faculty members Dror Biran, Caroline Hong, Hitomi Koyama, Kate Lee, Donna Loewy, Sandra Rivers, James Tocco and Andrew Villemez.

CCM’s world-class pianists also welcome special guest Daniel Weeks to the stage for this concert. A critically acclaimed tenor, Weeks joined CCM’s faculty as Associate Professor of Voice this fall.

Chertock promises that the concert will be an intimate and moving affair. “CCM’s Werner Recital Hall harbors two of the most beautiful pianos in the entire state of Ohio,” Chertock observes. “It’s the perfect acoustical space to experience this warm music.”

The Nov. 15 concert is the first of two Pianopaloozas scheduled for CCM’s 2015-16 performance season. Next semester, CCM’s extraordinary young artists will take the spotlight for the Pianopalooza: Student Showcase on Sunday, April 3.

An absurdist play amped to the max, The Hunchback of Seville delves into the lives of the monarchy and citizens of 15th-century Spain: the infamous Queen Isabella, the spoiled Infanta Juana (the future Queen of Spain), and the Muslim Talib who is desperately attempting to avoid persecution at the hands of the Spanish Inquisition. All of this revolves around Maxima, a mathematical genius and adopted royal family member who is locked away in a tower and pines for Talib’s love. Smith’s play uses this dark, comedic plot both for laughs and as a serious means to examine sanitized history and human rights injustices both in Spain and the new world that Columbus “discovered.” This exciting collaboration brings CCM drama students to Know Theatre’s stage for a history lesson you won’t get in college!

Funded by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, CCM Opera and Cincinnati Opera present a rare behind-the-scenes look at the creation of an original work. An opera based on the novel of the same name by Salman Rushdie, Shalimar the Clown revolves around a child named India who loses her father—a United States diplomat to India’s namesake country—to assassination at the hands of his former chauffeur Shalimar. The reasons that led the former clown to murder India’s father tell of the fragility of human life and love, detailing how complicated and non-simplistic our stories are, how large the consequences of our actions can loom, and how great joys can turn into unbearable sadness and senseless tragedy.

William Bolcom’s career is storied: famed pianist, Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, Ragtime revivalist and acclaimed professor at the University of Michigan. Arnold Weinstein, a self-proclaimed “theatre poet,” won acclaim as a lyricist for famed musicals such as Metamorphoses. Brought together by Darius Milhaud, the duo had a prolific partnership from 1964 until Weinstein’s death in 2005. Their collaborations included famed operas such as McTeague, A Wedding and others. Among these works were four sets of cabaret songs written between the 1970s and 1990s. CCM Opera is proud to present the first complete performance of all 24 of these cabaret songs.

Set in a Maine coastal village toward the end of the 19th century, Carousel is the story of carefree carnival barker Billy Bigelow and his reckless adventures with women, gambling and the wrong side of the law. Billy loses his job just as he learns that his wife is pregnant and, desperate to provide a decent life for his family, is coerced into being an accomplice to a robbery. Caught in the act and facing the certainty of prison, he takes his own life and is sent “up there.” Fifteen years later, Billy is allowed to return to earth for one day and encounters the daughter he never knew. How Billy instills in both the child and her mother a sense of hope and dignity is a dramatic testimony to the power of love. Declared “Best Musical of the Century” by Time Magazine in 1999, it’s easy to understand why Carousel became Rodgers and Hammerstein’s personal favorite.

CCM’s Summer Performance Series is heating up this week with the return of the Cincinnati World Piano Competition!

The First Round of the 2015 Cincinnati World Piano Competition continues through June 10, with the Semifinal Round scheduled for June 11. On Saturday, June 13, our finalists take the stage with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra for the summer’s can’t-miss concert!

World-Renowned Concert Pianist and Psychiatrist Richard Kogan Explores the Mind and Music of Chopin on Oct. 10

World-renowned concert pianist and psychiatrist Richard Kogan takes the stage at CCM at 7:30 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 10, for a celebration of the mind and music of Polish composer and virtuoso pianist Frédéric François Chopin.

Presented by the Friends of CCM and the Cincinnati Psychoanalytic Institute, this unique concert program combines the cherished works of Chopin with observations about the relationship between the composer’s mind, his creative motivations and his music. A frequent performer with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Kogan is a Juilliard-trained pianist and an alumnus of Harvard Medical School.

About Richard Kogan
Richard Kogan has a distinguished career both as a concert pianist and as a psychiatrist. He has been praised for his “eloquent, compelling, and exquisite playing” by the New York Times, and the Boston Globe wrote that “Kogan has somehow managed to excel at the world’s two most demanding professions.” He has gained renown for his lectures and recitals that explore the role of music in healing and the influence of psychological factors on the creative output of composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein.

He performed Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” and gave an address entitled “The Power of Music in Healing Mind and Body” at the 2009 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. He has recorded a DVD for Yamaha/Touchstar Productions entitled Music and the Mind. Yo Yo Ma wrote of this DVD, “I came away from this extraordinary lecture and performance deeply moved by a fascinating presentation that only Dr. Kogan, psychiatrist and concert pianist, can deliver.” Kogan has won the Concert Artists Guild Award and the Chopin Competition of the Kosciuszko Foundation and received the 2005 Artsgenesis Creative Achievement Award.

Dr. Kogan’s presentations are extraordinary, one-of-a-kind performances. He tells vivid stories about famous composers who suffered mental problems—frequent among highly creative people—while illustrating the composer’s work by exquisitely playing excerpts from their compositions. From composers such as Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, Schumann, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and Leonard Bernstein, Dr. Kogan shares an insight and journey into some of the most creative minds, while humanizing medicine and bringing more of the person into medical practice. Dr. Kogan will open your ears and eyes to the symphony that is humanity, music and medicine.

Kogan is a graduate of the Juilliard School of Music Pre-College, Harvard College and Harvard Medical School. He completed a psychiatry residency and an academic fellowship at NYU. He has a private practice of psychiatry in New York City and is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medical College as co-director of its Human Sexuality Program. He is also co-chairman of the recently established Weill Cornell Music/Medicine Initiative.

A Professor of Piano at Creighton University (and brother of UC President Santa J. Ono, PhD), Ono is scheduled to perform Brahms’ Caconne von J. S. Bach; Haydn’s Sonata in F Major, Hob. XVI:23; Schumann’s Kreisleriana, Op. 16; and Stravinsky’s Trois Mouvements de Pétrouchka.
