CCM Studio Acting Presents World Premiere of ‘Very Dumb Kids’

Written by rising New York playwright Gracie Gardner, Very Dumb Kids was workshopped by acting students last spring at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music. The CCM Studio Series presents the staged world premiere of the play on April 20-22 in Cohen Family Studio Theater. The play is directed by CCM Acting Professor Brant Russell.

The drama tells the tale of foreign correspondent Sarah Nehal, who is tragically murdered in New Delhi. While Sarah was busy confronting the world, her college friends sat calmly at home in the U.S., streaming T.V. shows on the internet and peddling their esoteric skill sets. One year after her funeral, Sarah’s friends meet for their annual Fourth of July reunion.

Very Dumb Kids explores entitlement and its effects on the disenfranchised as well as the privileged in the millennial era. The play also focuses on empowerment and how to live responsibly in an irresponsible universe.

This is the inaugural production of CCM Acting’s new play-commissioning initiative, which focuses on plays that speak to the unique experience of being young in America. The plays, written for and about students, will enrapture a new generation of artists and audiences. They will go on to be produced by educational institutions and professional theatre companies all over the country to expand CCM’s reach and reputation as a preeminent institution for the performing arts.

Very Dumb Kids runs from Thursday, April 20 through Saturday, April 22 in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. CCM Slideshows: “Cendrillon”

A bit of movie magic comes to CCM’s Mainstage in Jules Massenet’s fairytale opera Cendrillon, which continues at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 19 in Corbett Auditorium.

Inspired by Francois Truffaut’s 1973 French film Day for Night, director Robin Guarino stages Cendrillon on the set of a movie. The opera is based on  Charles Perrault’s original Cinderella story and features all of your favorite characters including the fairy godmother, in the guise of a costume designer, and the ugly stepsisters as diva actresses.

Cendrillon plays in CCM’s Corbett Auditorium Nov. 19-20; tickets are available through the CCM Box Office. The opera is performed in four acts with a brief pause after Act I and an intermission between Acts II and III. It will be sung in French with English supertitles.

World Premiere of CCM’s “They Were You” Gets Rave Reviews

Critics praised CCM’s world premiere of They Were You, a musical revue of Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt songs, which ran Oct. 5-9 in the Cohen Family Studio Theater. Devised and directed by Aubrey Berg, the Patricia A. Corbett Distinguished Chair of Musical Theatre at CCM, They Were You featured musical arrangements by CCM faculty member Stephen Goers and choreography by alumna Katie Johannigman (BFA Musical Theatre, 2012).

In his review for The Sappy Critic, Kirk Sheppard called CCM’s They Were You “a magical night of theater.” He praised Berg’s direction, the “excellent” cast, Johannigman’s “fun, logical” choreography and Goers’ “beyond beautiful” musical arrangements. 

“There’s no need to single out any one of the six outrageously gifted young artists in the cast,” said Rafael de Acha in his review of the production on Rafael’s Music Notes. “Let me merely give you their names and entreat you to make mental note of them, with the assurance that, sooner than you think, you will be hearing these names: Gabe Wrobel, Emily Fink, Stavros Koumbaros, Aria Brasswell, Karl Amundsen and Michelle Coben.”

Teddy Gumbleton of the League of Cincinnati Theatres wrote that each of the six student performers sang “like a dream, navigating the lush harmonies and infusing each song with the necessary depth and wit. Together they work flawlessly as an ensemble, infusing the rich music with tremendous character.”

In a review for Talkin’ Broadway, Scott Cain said CCM’s Jones and Schmidt revue “revealed a thoughtful, varied and pleasant journey through pair’s exemplary work, and showcased some fine performances and design.” Cain praised the production’s “beautiful, night-sky mural” backdrop designed by CCM faculty member Thomas Umfrid. He also proposed that They Were You “will hopefully be licensed and made available for other theater companies to perform.”

CCM Presents Rossini’s One-Act Operatic Farce ‘Il signor Bruschino,’ Feb. 19 – 21

CCM’s acclaimed Studio Series resumes Feb. 19 – 21 with Il signor Bruschino, the last – and arguably best – in a series of one-act operatic farces composed by Gioachino Rossini between 1810 and 1813. CCM graduate student Avishai Shalom conducts, with stage direction by fellow graduate student Frances Rabalais.

Admission to Il signor Bruschino is free, but reservations are required. Tickets become available at the CCM Box Office at noon on Monday, Feb. 15.

Il signor Bruschino features all of the traditional hallmarks of opera buffa: mistaken identities, star-crossed lovers, betrothed confusion and an ending that somehow ties up all of the loose ends!

Artist Diploma candidate Rabalais explains, “The comedy of Il signor Bruschino will be familiar to today’s audience. There are the young lovers who can’t get together, the older grumpy gentlemen who are more interested in being right than being nice and a few local eccentrics thrown in for good measure. The plot tosses them all together, we add some physical comedy and you end up with an evening full of laughter.”

According to Shalom, the playfulness of the plot is reinforced by Il signor Bruschino‘s music, which is remarkably cheery. “The score is almost entirely in the major mode and there is wonderful comedy in Rossini’s frequent use of vocal patter,” he explains.

Rabalais adds, “Rossini’s music for Bruschino is beautiful, but not always easy to sing. The performers have been working diligently for months on the music.”

Shalom was already familiar with the overture from Il signor Bruschino, in which Rossini famously asks the violins to tap their bows on their instruments. Now, after five full months of preparing for this production, Shalom has become intimately familiar with every other detail of this early masterpiece, as well!

Not only will Shalom be conducting the orchestra for this production, but he has also taken on the ambitious task of performing all of the continuo parts on a fortepiano, a close relative of the harpsichord and a precursor to the modern pianoforte. Although Shalom admits there was a learning curve involved, he is thrilled with the results.

Rabalais is similarly enthused about her involvement in Il signor Bruschino. “I have always enjoyed working on Rossini comedies, but have never had the opportunity to direct one,” she says. “I am excited to put my ideas on stage with this fantastic cast. The intimate size of the Cohen Family Studio Theater allows the performers to share this opera in a very immediate way.”

When asked what else audiences can expect from the production, Rabalais adds, “The entire design is beautiful, but I think the costumes are particularly excellent! We’ve set the opera in the 1780s, which is a fascinating time in history for clothing. We get a taste of a few different styles in this opera, which is quite a feast for the eyes.”

CCM’s 2015-16 Studio Series Opens with Award-Winning Musical ‘Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,’ Oct. 8 – 10

CCM opens its 2015-16 Studio Series with a new production of Roger Miller and William Hauptman’s Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, playing Oct. 8 – 10, 2015, in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Directed by Vince DeGeorge with musical direction by Steve Goers and choreography by Patti James, Big River will keep audiences’ toes tapping for four performances.

Winner of three Tony awards, including Best Musical, Big River is an irrepressible adaptation of Mark Twain’s timeless tale. The show brings to life all of the characters from the original novel: Widow Douglas, the King and Duke, Pap Finn, Tom Sawyer and – of course – Huck and Jim.

Vince DeGeorge, newly appointed Assistant Professor and Joseph Weinberger Chair of Acting for the Lyric Stage at CCM, returns to the Cohen Family Studio Theater to direct Big River. Formerly a Visiting Professor at CCM, his Studio Series productions of Blood Brothers and 110 in the Shade last season proved a smash with critics and audiences alike, so anticipation is high for his latest production in the Studio Theater. “I love to take things that are very large and distill them down to what is most elemental about them,” DeGeorge says of directing in CCM’s intimate black box performance space.

Last seen at CCM in an “expansive” 1994 Mainstage production, Big River will be very different this time around. “It’s an exciting challenge for me and it’s exciting for the students as well, because when you really distill things down, it allows the actors and the story to shine,” says DeGeorge of adapting a large musical for a small space. This applies to the music as well; the orchestrations are new for this production and will utilize a bluegrass quartet.

In addition to the cast and music, the technical elements will play a vital role in telling the story, “The show is very organic, very ‘of nature,’ and most of it takes place on the river. Lighting and sound are extremely important to place the audience in that world. Also, what’s brilliant about the set is that the designer kept stripping it down until we found a simple, clear language that supports the whole story,” DeGeorge explains.

A crucial piece of the story is the river itself. Over the last century, commentators have described the river in Twain’s novel as a powerful symbol of freedom and possibility for Huck and Jim. Accordingly, it is on the river where much of the musical’s action takes place. How will this iconic symbol be portrayed in such an intimate space? “Oh, I can’t give that away!” laughs DeGeorge.

DeGeorge’s production of Big River will enthrall audiences with its clarity and simplicity, and allow CCM’s “stars of tomorrow” to shine.

CCM’s Mainstage Series opens this week with a powerful production of David Edgar’s Pentecost.

Declared an “important opportunity to be ‘taken in’ by theater” by Rick Pender in his CityBeat preview story, Pentecost details the discovery of a painting stunningly similar to Giotto di Bondone’s The Lamentation in an abandoned church in Eastern Europe. If proven to pre-date the master’s work, the fresco will revolutionize Western Art.

A dramatic power struggle ensues, as representatives from the worlds of art history, religion and politics stake their claims for the ultimate prize. The unexpected arrival of 12 asylum seekers sets events spiraling toward an explosive climax. Richard E. Hess directs.

Described by the Daily Telegraph as “funny, frightening and deeply moving,” this powerful play by the Tony Award-winning adapter of Nicholas Nickleby and author of numerous plays won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play of 1995. This production contains mature subject matter.
