Dance students at UC’s College-Conservatory of Music will present original choreography on Thursday, March 2 through Saturday, March 4 in the annual Student Choreographers Showcase in CCM’s Cohen Family Studio Theater. Admission is free but reservations are required; tickets become available at noon on Monday, Feb. 27 through the CCM Box Office.
The Choreographers Showcase is directed by Assistant Professor of Dance André Megerdichian. The featured student choreographers are Kiahna Saneshige, Dominique Neff, Sam Jones, Emma Webb, Molly-Grace Lewis, Erin Donnelly and Hope Friedman.
A panel of five faculty members from CCM’s Division of Theatre Arts, Production and Arts Administration chose the students from 11 applicants. Usually the showcase only features six works, but the choreography projects from the seven students was so convincing that the panel decided to present an extra work this year.
“Each applicant showed us three to six minutes of their proposed project, so, while the pieces were not complete, we were looking for a clarity of vision and potential based on what was presented,” Megerdichian said.
Junior Emma Webb’s dance is a barefoot contemporary ballet piece titled Ephemeral. Webb was inspired to create movement based on famous sculptures and paintings; the work incorporates pedestals to further display the dancers themselves as works of art.
Moonlight, another student work in the showcase, was choreographed by sophomore Erin Donnelly. This narrative piece, set to music by The Piano Guys, follows a soloist lost in a forest and depicts her conflicting emotions of fear, intrigue and fascination.
“The Choreographers Showcase is a very exciting program,” Megerdichian said. “It really represents the future of dance by presenting the next generation of choreographers. The students have the unique perspective of speaking in the context of their time, and this batch of choreographers is really going to give us a great show.”
