CCM’s Department of Choral Studies presents contemporary works, a staged performance of J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and concerts with CCM’s Philharmonia and Concert Orchestra during its Spring Choral Series.

Under the direction of Professor of Music and Director of Choral Studies Earl Rivers and Associate Professor of Ensembles and Conducting Brett Scott, CCM’s and UC’s choral ensembles will present eight concerts from Feb. 12 through May 7. Tickets are on sale now for all performances.

The series begins at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12 with the Winter Choral Showcase, featuring performances from the CCM Chamber Choir and Chorale, Cincinnati Children’s Choir Bel Canto, and the UC Men’s and Women’s Choruses. The concert includes selections from William Byrd’s The Great Service, Dominick DiOrio’s A Dome of Many Colored Glass and We Dance, Stephen Paulus’ The Road Home and Craig Hella Johnson’s Light of a Clear Blue Morning.

UC’s Men’s and Women’s Choruses return with the Cabaret Singers on March 4 in a presentation of classical, pop, folk and jazz arrangements, featuring works by Copland, Handel, Holst and more. A week later on March 12, the Cincinnati Children’s Choir will celebrate its 24th anniversary with special guest, the Xavier University Women’s Chorus.

The largest undertaking of the season is a staged presentation of J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion on April 9, featuring the CCM Chamber Choir, Cincinnati Children’s Choir and the CCM Philharmonia alongside faculty artists Daniel Weeks and Kenneth Shaw, as well as student soloists. This work tells the compelling story of the events leading up to the trial, crucifixion and burial of Jesus. This performance will be held at Cincinnati’s Christ Church Cathedral.

The Choral Series continues with White Night, a joint performance between the CCM Concert Orchestra and Chorale on April 21. This concert includes Borodin’s “Polovtsian Dances” (from Prince Igor), Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 in C Minor, Little Russian.
