The Preparatory Department of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM Prep) proudly presents Disney’s Little Mermaid Jr. at 8 p.m. on both Friday, April 26, and Saturday, April 27, in UC’s Patricia Corbett Theater. Karie-Lee Sutherland directs, with musical direction by Rebecca Childs and choreography by Elaine Eckstein.
First published in 1837, The Little Mermaid was written by Danish author Hans Christian Andersen. Since its publication, the well-known fairy tale has had many literary, stage and film adaptations. American audiences are perhaps most familiar with the 1989 animated film released by Walt Disney Pictures. In 2008, a stage adaptation of the Disney film began performances on Broadway. Adapted from this production, Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Jr. features the hit songs “Part of Your World,” She’s in Love” and the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea.” The score for both the original animated film and the Broadway production is by Howard Ashman with lyrics by Alan Menken and additional lyrics by Glenn Slater.
In a magical kingdom fathoms below, the beautiful young mermaid Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. In order to achieve her dream, she’ll have to defy her father King Triton, make a deal with the evil sea witch Ursula and convince Prince Eric that she’s the girl with the enchanting voice.
Margot Grom, a seventh grader at Wyoming Middle School, plays Ariel. Brody McKinnon, an eighth grade homeschooler, plays Prince Eric and Sebastian is played by Jonah Sorcher, a fifth grader at Indian Hill Elementary School.
The cast of 44 talented students range in age from 8 to 14 years old. All of them are CCM Prep students studying music, theatre and/or dancing. The students have been rehearsing weekly since January for this fun-filled production. The Little Mermaid, Jr. is fully staged and costumed.
In addition to the two public performances at CCM, there will be community performances for patients, families and staff at Children’s Hospital at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, and a performance at Ronald McDonald House at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1.
