For the first time in nearly two decades, CCM will host the Midwest Chapter Meeting of the Society for Ethnomusicology (MIDSEM). The conference comes to CCM Village on Friday, April 12, and Saturday, April 13, with events held in the Baur Room of the Corbett Center for the Performing Arts and in room 3250 of Mary Emery Hall.
More than 100 scholars and students will be traveling from throughout the Midwestern United States to participate in the conference. In addition, students and faculty from a variety of programs at UC (including Musicology, Music Education, Anthropology, Sociology and International Programs and Services), as well as local community members, will be participating in the conference as presenters, volunteers and attendees.
The conference will begin with a keynote lecture delivered by Dr. Louise Meintjes, Associate Professor of Music at Duke University, at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, April 12, in Mary Emery Hall room 3250. The topic of this lecture will be “The Digital Homestead: Recording Men’s Sociality and Zulu Music.”
Over the course of a day and a half, there will be a variety of workshops, lecture-demonstrations, performances and research panels on a range of musical and cultural themes. The conference will feature performances showcasing the world music labs affiliated with CCM’s ethnomusicology program, including the North Indian tabla ensemble, directed by Jim Feist, and the Zimbabwean mbira ensemble (MbiraCats), directed by Stefan Fiol.
CCM also welcomes Euphor, one of the most acclaimed string bands in the Midwest, for a performance of old-time music for a contra dance from 8 – 11 p.m. on Friday, April 12, in room 1630 of UC’s Corbett Center for the Performing Arts.
