CCM presents a special treat for fans of film music this Sunday, as the acclaimed Philharmonia Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble go to the movies for the evening, celebrating the sounds of the cinema in UC’s Corbett Auditorium!

The Jan. 27 program will open with selections from classic film scores such as A Streetcar Named Desire before moving on to the work of singer/songwriter, arranger, film scorer and distinguished UC alumnus Randy Edelman (CCM ’69, HonDoc ’04)!

The Jan. 27 concert will also include Edelman’s symphonic piece Transcontinental: A Mad Musical Dash Across the USA, which was premiered by the Cincinnati Pops several years ago and which will be dedicated to the loving memory of Maestro Erich Kunzel.

Arriving just in time for movie awards season, both the Cincinnati Enquirer and CityBeat recommend the concert, with CityBeat’s Anne Arenstein observing, “The Oscars are a month away, but you can get in the mood at CCM when distinguished alum Randy Edelman takes the podium to conduct his best-known film scores featuring CCM’s Philharmonia Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble. An award-winning singer, songwriter, arranger and composer, Edelman started out working for James Brown at King Records and moved on to a solo career, touring with everyone from Frank Zappa to Barry Manilow.”

“Even if he had only written the theme for Gettysburg,” writes MusicWorld‘s Jon Burlingame, “Randy Edelman would have earned a permanent place in the pantheon of film and television scorers. But that stirring piece of Americana — penned in 1993 for the Civil War epic, since gone on to numerous incarnations including perennial performances at July 4th celebrations around the country — is just one part of this composer’s story.”

Experience the full story at 7 p.m. this Sunday, Jan. 27!
