CCM’s Ballet Ensemble presents its 2012 Choreographers’ Showcase on March 10 and 11 in Patricia Corbett Theater. Jiang Qi and Michael Tevlin co-direct this annual event, which consists entirely of student-created works. Admission is free and open to the general public. The concert is dedicated to the memory of CCM dance major Corrine Patterson (1991-2010).

This year’s installment of the Choreographers’ Showcase will feature eleven new pieces choreographed by CCM dance majors and supported by student lighting designers, stage managers and crew. The showcase offers students a unique opportunity to create their own work, conduct rehearsals and see the fruits of their labor on stage.

For third-year student and first-year choreographer Aaron Hanekamp, the showcase has allowed the chance to keep practicing and developing his art, despite currently suffering an injury. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and my movement choices,” says Hanekamp, who is choreographing to music by contemporary German composer Max Richter. Hanekamp has found that the creative process has been therapeutic during difficult times. “Dancing is a great way for us to express ourselves, and I wanted to find a piece of music that reflects that. I want it to be honest.”

This year’s showcase is of particular importance because it honors the memory of Corrine Patterson, a CCM Dance student who passed away during the 2010-2011 school year. Senior Lydia Parks has choreographed a work to “We Insist” by Zoe Keating, a piece of music to which Patterson had begun to choreograph before her death. “We felt that it would really honor her as a choreographer to finish what she started,” says Parks. “I’ve imagined what her concepts about this piece of music were, and I’ve played with this idea of what I am calling ‘footprints’ because she had such an impact on our lives, so they are representative of her footprints on us.”

Dance students greatly value the opportunity they are given to collaborate in new ways and learn from the creative processes of their peers, and audiences can experience the artistic product firsthand at the Choreographers’ Showcase. “Artistry as a dancer is very different from artistry as a choreographer because, as a choreographer, you get to create something out of nothing,” Parks explains. “I’ve loved the opportunity to choreograph every year, and it’s always interesting to see the products of really creative people.”

Contributions to the Corrine Patterson Scholarship Fund will be accepted during intermission.
