Congratulations to Thomas Kernan, a musicology doctoral candidate at CCM. Earlier this year, Kernan received three awards: the Cincinnati Branch of the English-Speaking Union‘s Research and Travel Grant, UC’s University Research Council Summer Fellowship and the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs‘ Doctoral Scholarship.
Originally from Long Island, New York, Kernan is investigating almost 150 years’ worth of music related to Abraham Lincoln. His travel grant and fellowship have been used to support a two-week research trip to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, Illinois, and a ten-day research trip to the Performing Arts Division of the New York Public Library.
This research is part of Kernan’s PhD dissertation, “Sounding the Mystic Chords of Memory: Musical Memorials for Abraham Lincoln, 1865-2009.” You can learn more about Kernan’s research here.
