Congratulations to our own Eric Huffman and Katie Johannigman for earning Acclaim Award nominations for their work on Out of This World, the 2011 offering of CCM’s Musicals Redux series, which resurrects forgotten theatre gems. The show also earned an overall recommendation from Acclaim Award panelists.
An adaptation of Plautus’ Amphitryon with music by Cole Porter, Out of This World pits Roman gods and goddesses against each other with amusing results as they interact with contemporary mortals. The show premiered on Broadway in 1950 and ran for just 157 performances.
Huffman, a junior from Lenexa, KS, nominated in the category of non-Equity performance by a supporting actor, was singled out for his portrayal of Mercury. Huffman has appeared in previous CCM productions including Evita, The Human Comedy, Anything Goes and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Johannigman, a junior from Cincinnati, earned a nomination for her choreography of this dance-filled production, which features a wide range of styles; she has appeared in CCM productions including Hair, Anything Goes, A Little Night Music and the dance showcase, Under Construction2.
Panelists recommended Out of This World based partly on the joyous and high-energy commitment from its unusually large cast of more than 40 students. “Uniformly, the cast threw themselves whole-heartedly into the absurd characters and plot,” said one panelist. “The singing was of remarkably high quality, both from the soloists and from the chorus. Thoroughly professional.”
Out of This World, which was scheduled for a limited run of one weekend, closed May 14. More information about upcoming CCM productions can be found at ccm.uc.edu.
