Scott Belck, Director of Jazz Studies at CCM

The fall 2010 Jazz Series celebrates everything from the Big Band standards of Duke Ellington and Count Basie to the fresh and hot compositions of CCM students and faculty. As the College-Conservatory of Music Jazz Studies program ushers in the 2010-11 season, it also warmly welcomes a new Director of Jazz Studies, Scott Belck.

Belck is a seasoned performer, conductor, jazz composer and proud CCM alumnus. Belck is a founding member of the critically acclaimed Tromba Mundi contemporary trumpet ensemble, the UpBeat Brass and Lead Trumpet for the Detroit Jazz Festival Orchestra. Belck has performed as a leader, musical director or sideman with many of today’s top jazz players, including Fred Hersch, Adam Nussbaum, Lew Soloff, Randy Brecker, Slide Hampton, Jim McNeely, Claudio Roditi, John Riley, Rick Margitza, Bob Belden, Jimmy Heath, Bobby Watson, Tom Harrell, Tim Hagans, Regina Carter, Wes Anderson, John Hollenbeck, Steve Turre, Conrad Herwig, Gordon Brisker, Hank Marr, Marvin Stamm, Gerry Mulligan, Kenny Garrett, John Fedchock, Phil Woods, Ed Soph, John LaBarbera and Diane Schuur. He has taught on the music faculties of Capital University, University of Minnesota Duluth, Miami University, University of Dayton, Marshall University, Sinclair Community College and St. Francis Xavier University in Canada. Belck replaces veteran Jazz Studies program head Rick VanMatre. VanMatre led CCM Jazz for 27 years and retired spring 2010.

CCM’s jazz performances continue to increase in popularity and tickets for this season’s performances are now on sale by calling the CCM Box Office at 513-556-4183 or online at ccm.uc.edu.
